3. Analysis of Large Geomagnetically Induced Currents During the 7-8 September 2017 Storm: Geoelectric Field Mapping

Abstract

High temporal and high spatial resolution geoelectric field models of two M\"ants\"al\"a, Finnish pipeline GIC intervals that occurred within the 7-8 September, 2017 geomagnetic storm have been made. The geomagnetic measurements with 10 s sampling rate of 28 IMAGE ground magnetometers distributed over the north Europe (from $52.07^\circ$ to $69.76^\circ$ latitude) are the bases for the study. A GeoElectric Dynamic Mapping (GEDMap) code was developed for this task. GEDMap considers 4 different methods of interpolation and allows a grid of $0.05^\circ$ (lat.)$\times 0.2^\circ$ (lon.) spatial scale resolution. The geoelectric field dynamic mapping output gives both spatial and temporal variations of the magnitude and direction of fields. The GEDMap results show very rapid and strong variability of geoelectric field and the extremely localized peak enhancements. The magnitude of geoelectric fields over M\"ants\"al\"a at the time of the two GIC peaks were 279.7 mV/km and 336.9 mV/km. The comparison of the GIC measurements in M\"ants\"al\"a and our modeling results show very good agreement with a correlation coefficient higher than 0.8. It is found that the auroral electrojet geoelectric field has very rapid changes in both magnitude and orientation causing the GICs. It is also shown that the electrojet is not simply oriented in the east-west direction. It is possible that even higher time resolution base magnetometer data of 1 s will yield even more structure, so this will be our next effort., Comment: (28 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Space Weather)

Abstract

A growing number of optogenetic tools have been developed to reversibly control binding between two engineered protein domains. In contrast, relatively few tools confer light-switchable binding to a generic target protein of interest. Such a capability would offer substantial advantages, enabling photoswitchable binding to endogenous target proteins in cells or light-based protein purification in vitro. Here, we report the development of opto-nanobodies (OptoNBs), a versatile class of chimeric photoswitchable proteins whose binding to proteins of interest can be enhanced or inhibited upon blue light illumination. We find that OptoNBs are suitable for a range of applications including reversibly binding to endogenous intracellular targets, modulating signaling pathway activity, and controlling binding to purified protein targets in vitro. This work represents a step towards programmable photoswitchable regulation of a wide variety of target proteins.

Abstract

A new reconstruction of the heliospheric modulation potential for galactic cosmic rays is presented for the neutron monitor era, since 1951. The new reconstruction is based on an updated methodology in comparison to previous reconstructions: (1) the use of the new-generation neutron monitor yield function, (2) the use of the new model of the local interstellar spectrum, employing in particular direct data from the distant missions, and (3) the calibration of the neutron monitor responses to direct measurements of the cosmic ray spectrum performed by the PAMELA space-borne spectrometer over 47 time intervals during 2006{2010. The reconstruction is based on data from six standard NM64-type neutron monitors (Apatity, Inuvik, Kergulen, Moscow, Newark and Oulu) since 1965, and two IGY-type ground-based detectors (Climax and Mt.Washington) for 1951-1964. The new reconstruction, along with the estimated uncertainties is tabulated in the paper. The presented series forms a benchmark record of the cosmic ray variability (in the energy range between 1-30 GeV) for the last 60 years, and can be used in long-term studies in the fields of solar, heliospheric and solar-terrestrial physics., Comment: Published in JGR

Abstract

Biocatalytic oxidations are an emerging technology for selective C−H bond activation. While promising for a range of selective oxidations, practical use of enzymes catalyzing aerobic hydroxylation is presently limited by their substrate scope and stability under industrially relevant conditions. Here, we report the engineering and practical application of a non‐heme iron and α‐ketoglutarate‐dependent dioxygenase for the direct stereo‐ and regio‐selective hydroxylation of a non‐native fluoroindanone en route to the oncology treatment belzutifan, replacing a five‐step chemical synthesis with a direct enantioselective hydroxylation. Mechanistic studies indicated that formation of the desired product was limited by enzyme stability and product overoxidation, with these properties subsequently improved by directed evolution, yielding a biocatalyst capable of >15,000 total turnovers. Highlighting the industrial utility of this biocatalyst, the high‐yielding, green, and efficient oxidation was demonstrated at kilogram scale for the synthesis of belzutifan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Quebec blackout on 13 March 1989, has made geomagnetically induced current (GIC) research a socially important field of study. It is widely recognized that the effects of space weather, which may affect the power infrastructure, threaten countries located at high latitudes. However, in recent years, various studies have shown that countries at lower latitudes may also be at risk. One of the best proxies of GIC variability is the local geoelectric field, as measured in Eskdalemuir, Lerwick, and Hartland, by the British Geological Survey or modeled using, e.g., a 1D layered Earth conductivity model. In our article, we present a review of the issues related to the impact of the GIC on transformers and transmission lines in Central and Southern European countries, from Greece, Spain, and Italy to Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Poland. The review underlines the importance of the systematic collection of information about power grid failures and the need for further systematic studies of the GIC's impact on the operation of power grids in mid-latitude countries.
