Search

A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig (version 7.3) has been launched. This iteration encompasses several enhancements over its predecessor, version 7.2. Noteworthy upgrades include: the implementation of a process-independent electroweak angular-ordered parton shower integrated with QCD and QED radiation; a new recoil scheme for initial-state radiation improving the behaviour of the angular-ordered parton shower; the incorporation of the heavy quark effective theory to refine the hadronization and decay of excited heavy mesons and heavy baryons; a dynamic strategy to regulate the kinematic threshold of cluster splittings within the cluster hadronization model; several improvements to the structure of the cluster hadronization model allowing for refined models; the possibility to extract event-by-event hadronization corrections in a well-defined way; the possibility of using the string model, with a dedicated tune. Herwig 7 is a general-purpose Monte Carlo generator of particle collisions comprising both hard perturbative as well as soft phenomenological physics. Herwig is therefore capable to describe the entire final state of hadronized particles in a collision event. A spacetime topology of a parton system entering hadronization is fully described and tested for the first time. A combination of information from particles momenta and spacetime positions is utilized to minimize a boost-invariant distance measure of the parton system. We present a reasonable agreement of the model with a selection of experimental data and conclude that spacetime event topology can be meaningfully used in the further development., Comment: Contribution to: ICHEP 2020

The modelling of multiple parton interactions in Monte Carlo event generators is a crucial part not only for the dressing of signal processes but also to describe data with a minimum bias on the event selection. Much work has and will be put into the theoretical framework and the numerical implementation of these models. In this contribution, we summarize various changes to the machinery of multiparton interactions and related physics in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig 7., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We present a model for generating spacetime coordinates in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig 7, and perform colour reconnection by minimizing a boost-invariant distance measure of the system. We compare the model to a series of soft physics observables. Monte Carlo event generators (MCEGs) are the indispensable workhorses of particle physics, bridging the gap between theoretical ideas and first-principles calculations on the one hand, and the complex detector signatures and data of the experimental community on the other hand. All collider physics experiments are dependent on simulated events by MCEG codes such as Herwig, Pythia, Sherpa, POWHEG, and MG5_aMC@NLO to design and tune their detectors and analysis strategies. The development of MCEGs is overwhelmingly driven by a vibrant community of academics at European Universities, who also train the next generations of particle phenomenologists. The new challenges posed by possible future collider-based experiments and the fact that the first analyses at Run II of the LHC are now frequently limited by theory uncertainties urge the community to invest into further theoretical and technical improvements of these essential tools. We consider soft gluon evolution at the amplitude level to expose the structure of colour reconnection from a perturbative point of view. Considering the cluster hadronization model and an universal Ansatz for the soft anomalous dimension we find strong support for geometric models considered earlier. We also show how reconnection into baryonic systems arises, and how larger cluster systems evolve. We present an algorithm to combine multiple matrix elements at LO and NLO with a parton shower. We build on the unitarized merging paradigm. The inclusion of higher orders and multiplicities reduce the scale uncertainties for observables sensitive to hard emissions, while preserving the features of inclusive quantities. The combination allows further soft and collinear emissions to be predicted by the all-order parton shower approximation. We inspect the impact of terms that are formally but not parametrically negligible. We present results for a number of collider observables where multiple jets are observed, either on their own or in the presence of additional uncoloured particles. We calculate the process $pp\to W^+W^-\to e^+ \nu_e \mu^-\bar{\nu}_\mu$ at NLO QCD, including also effective field theory (EFT) operators mediating the $ggW^+W^-$ interaction, which first occur at dimension eight. We further combine the NLO and EFT matrix elements produced by GoSam with the HERWIG7/MATCHBOX framework, which offers the possibility to study the impact of a parton shower. We propose changes to the colour reconnection model in the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig in order to remove the quasi diffractive events from the soft multiple parton interactions. With the advent and recent extension of the BLHA standard to interface Monte Carlo event generators and one-loop matrix element providers, the Herwig++ event generator has expanded its range of applicability to a multitude of underlying hard processes at NLO QCD. The new NLO development is centered around the Matchbox framework, which turns fixed NLO QCD calculations into parton shower matched calculations - to be matched to the two parton shower variants of Herwig++. Matchbox provides thereby for the automated setup of the underlying fixed NLO QCD calculations and the interface to the one-loop matrix element providers, as well as for an efficient and automated multi-channel phase space sampling, and forms the basis for the NLO capabilities of the new release of Herwig++. A major new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ (version 3.0) is now available. This release marks the end of distinguishing Herwig++ and HERWIG development and therefore constitutes the first major release of version 7 of the Herwig event generator family. The new version features a number of significant improvements to the event simulation, including: built-in NLO hard process calculation for all Standard Model processes, with matching to both angular-ordered and dipole shower modules via both subtractive (MC@NLO-type) and multiplicative (Powheg-type) algorithms; QED radiation and spin correlations in the angular ordered shower; a consistent treatment of perturbative uncertainties within the hard process and parton showering. Several of the new features will be covered in detail in accompanying publications, and an update of the manual will follow in due course., Comment: 8 pages. A study of QCD coherence is presented based on a sample of about 397000 $e^+e^-$ hadronic annihilation events collected at $\sqrt{s}=91$ GeV with the OPAL detector at LEP. The study is based on four recently proposed observables that are sensitive to coherence effects in the perturbative regime. The measurement of these observables is presented, along with a comparison with the predictions of different parton shower models. The models include both conventional parton shower models and dipole antenna models. Different ordering variables are used to investigate their influence on the predictions.

We propose four simple event-shape variables for semi-inclusive $e^+e^- \to 4$-jet events. The observables and cuts are designed to be especially sensitive to subleading aspects of the event structure, and allow to test the reliability of phenomenological QCD models in greater detail. Three of them, $\theta_{14}$, $\theta^*$, and $C_2^{(1/5)}$, focus on soft emissions off three-jet topologies with a small opening angle, for which coherence effects beyond the leading QCD dipole pattern are expected to be enhanced. A complementary variable, $M_L^2/M_H^2$, measures the ratio of the hemisphere masses in 4-jet events with a compressed scale hierarchy (Durham $y_{23}\sim y_{34}$), for which subleading $1\to 3$ splitting effects are expected to be enhanced. We consider several different parton-shower models, spanning both conventional and dipole/antenna ones, all tuned to the same $e^+e^-$ reference data, and show that a measurement of the proposed observables would allow for additional significant discriminating power between the models., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures

The detailed study of vector-boson pair production processes at the LHC will lead to a better understanding of electroweak physics. As pointed out before, a consistent inclusion of higher-order electroweak effects in the analysis of corresponding experimental data may be crucial to properly predict the relevant phenomenological features of these important reactions. Those contributions lead to dramatic distortions of invariant-mass and angular distributions at high energies, but may also significantly affect the cross section near threshold, as is the case e.g. for Z-pairs. For this reason, we present an analysis of the next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to WW, WZ and ZZ production at the LHC, taking into account mass effects as well as leptonic decays. Hence, our predictions are valid in the whole kinematic reach of the LHC and, moreover, respect the spin correlations of the leptonic decay products at NLO accuracy. Starting from these fixed-order results, a simple and straight-forward method is motivated to combine the electroweak corrections with state-of-the-art Monte Carlo predictions, focusing on a meaningful combination of higher-order electroweak and QCD effects. To illustrate our approach, the electroweak corrections are implemented in the HERWIG++ generator, and their phenomenological effects within a QCD environment are studied explicitly., Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures

Vector-boson pair production is of great phenomenological importance at the LHC. These processes will help to validate the Standard Model at highest energies, and they may also open the door for the discovery of new physics potentially showing up in subtle modifications of the non-abelian structure of weak interactions. In this letter, we review the status of the corresponding theory predictions, focusing on the higher-order electroweak corrections. We present a NLO analysis of electroweak corrections to W-pair, W$^+$Z and Z-pair production at the LHC, including all mass effects as well as leptonic decays. Contributions of photon-induced processes and massive-boson radiation are also discussed. The electroweak corrections are implemented in the HERWIG++ Monte Carlo generator, where they are combined with QCD corrections. We also propose a simple and straight-forward method allowing for an \emph{a posteriori} implementation of electroweak corrections to vector-boson pair production in any Monte Carlo event sample., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures; to appear in the proceedings of the EPS HEP 2013

We describe the implementation details of the colour reconnection model in the event generator Herwig++. We report on the implementation of a coherent dipole shower algorithm along with an automated implementation for dipole subtraction and for performing POWHEG- and MC@NLO-type matching to next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations. Both programs are implemented as add-on modules to the event generator Herwig++. A preliminary tune of parameters to data acquired at LEP, HERA and Drell-Yan pair production at the Tevatron has been performed, and we find an overall very good description which is slightly improved by the NLO matching., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

We review the physics basis, main features and use of general-purpose Monte Carlo event generators for the simulation of proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Topics included are: the generation of hard-scattering matrix elements for processes of interest, at both leading and next-to-leading QCD perturbative order; their matching to approximate treatments of higher orders based on the showering approximation; the parton and dipole shower formulations; parton distribution functions for event generators; non-perturbative aspects such as soft QCD collisions, the underlying event and diffractive processes; the string and cluster models for hadron formation; the treatment of hadron and tau decays; the inclusion of QED radiation and beyond-Standard-Model processes. We describe the principal features of the ARIADNE, Herwig++, PYTHIA 8 and SHERPA generators, together with the Rivet and Professor validation and tuning tools, and discuss the physics philosophy behind the proper use of these generators and tools. We outline a new formalism for dipole-type parton showers which maintain exact energy-momentum conservation at each step of the evolution. Particular emphasis is put on the coherence properties, the level at which recoil effects do enter and the role of transverse momentum generation from initial state radiation. The formulated algorithm is shown to correctly incorporate coherence for soft gluon radiation. We describe the recent developments to extend the multi-parton interaction model of underlying events in Herwig++ into the soft, non-perturbative, regime. This allows the program to describe also minimum bias collisions in which there is no hard interaction, for the first time. It is publicly available from versions 2.3 onwards and describes the Tevatron underlying event and minimum bias data. The transverse momentum of electroweak bosons in a Drell-Yan process is an important quantity for the experimental program at the LHC. The new model of non-perturbative gluon emission in an initial state parton shower presented in this note gives a good description of this quantity for the data taken in previous experiments over a wide range of CM energy. We consider a model of transverse momentum production in which non-perturbative smearing takes place throughout the perturbative evolution, by a simple modification to an initial state parton shower algorithm. Using this as the important non-perturbative ingredient, we get a good fit to data over a wide range of energy. Combining it with the non-perturbative masses and cutoffs that are a feature of conventional parton showers also leads to a reasonable fit. We apply the positive-weight Monte Carlo method of Nason for simulating QCD processes accurate to Next-To-Leading Order to the case of e+e- annihilation to hadrons. The method entails the generation of the hardest gluon emission first and then subsequently adding a `truncated' shower before the emission. Results from the new Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ are presented. This first version simulates Hadron Emission Reactions With Interfering Gluons in electron-positron annihilation. The parton shower evolution is carried out using new evolution variables suited to describing radiation from heavy quarks as well as light partons. We present a new formalism for parton shower simulation of QCD jets, which incorporates the following features: invariance under boosts along jet axes, improved treatment of heavy quark fragmentation, angular-ordered evolution with soft gluon coherence, more accurate soft gluon angular distributions, and better coverage of phase space. After an introduction to event generators we give an overview of developments in the field of joining matrix elements with parton showers. Starting with matrix element corrections, we also discuss implementations that match LO and NLO matrix elements with parton shower results correctly. We review the program of the calculation of next-to-leading order corrections to the virtual photon impact factor.
