Abstract

A retrosynthetic approach toward the phenantree nucleus was described. The key compound was a 6,6'-biphenyl-1,1'-dicarboxaldehyde intermediate formed through an ambient temperature Ullmann coupling. The solution to the final step led to the use of the McMurry low valent titanium intramolecular condensation which resulted in 45-57% yields in phenanthrene. In addition, the grouping of Ullmann and McMurry reactions is perceived to be amenable to many different substituted phenanthrenes.

Abstract

Dienes, bearing an electron-withdrawing substituent at C-1, are cyclopropanated regio- and stereo selectively at the C-C double bond proximal to this electron-withdrawing group. The highest selectivity is observed in the case of dienylboronates. The cyclopropanation of these substrates affords almost exclusively the synthetically useful 1-boronato-2-vinyl-cyclopropanes.
