- Abstract
Fusion energy research has in the past 40 years focused primarily on the tokamak concept, but recent advances in plasma theory and computational power have led to renewed interest in stellarators. The largest and most sophisticated stellarator in the world, Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), has just started operation, with the aim to show that the earlier weaknesses of this concept have been addressed successfully, and that the intrinsic advantages of the concept persist, also at plasma parameters approaching those of a future fusion power plant. Here we show the first physics results, obtained before plasma operation: that the carefully tailored topology of nested magnetic surfaces needed for good confinement is realized, and that the measured deviations are smaller than one part in 100,000. This is a significant step forward in stellarator research, since it shows that the complicated and delicate magnetic topology can be created and verified with the required accuracy.

The two leading concepts for confining high-temperature fusion plasmas are the tokamak and the stellarator. Tokamaks are rotationally symmetric and use a large plasma current to achieve confinement, whereas stellarators are non-axisymmetric and employ three-dimensionally shaped magnetic field coils to twist the field and confine the plasma. As a result, the magnetic field of a stellarator needs to be carefully designed to minimize the collisional transport arising from poorly confined particle orbits, which would otherwise cause excessive power losses at high plasma temperatures. In addition, this type of transport leads to the appearance of a net toroidal plasma current, the so-called bootstrap current. Here, we analyse results from the first experimental campaign of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, showing that its magnetic-field design allows good control of bootstrap currents and collisional transport. The energy confinement time is among the best ever achieved in stellarators, both in absolute figures (τE > 100 ms) and relative to the stellarator confinement scaling. The bootstrap current responds as predicted to changes in the magnetic mirror ratio. These initial experiments confirm several theoretically predicted properties of Wendelstein 7-X plasmas, and already indicate consistency with optimization measures. Results from the first experimental campaign of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator demonstrate that its magnetic-field design grants good control of parasitic plasma currents, leading to long energy confinement times.

This is a significant step forward in stellarator research, since it shows that the complicated and delicate magnetic topology can be created and verified with the required accuracy., Early stellarator designs suffered from high particle losses, an issue that can be addressed by optimization of the coils. Here the authors measure the magnetic field lines in the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, confirming that the complicated design of the superconducting coils has been realized successfully.

- Abstract
After completing the main construction phase of Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) and successfully commissioning the device, first plasma operation started at the end of 2015. Integral commissioning of plasma start-up and operation using electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) and an extensive set of plasma diagnostics have been completed, allowing initial physics studies during the first operational campaign. Both in helium and hydrogen, plasma breakdown was easily achieved. Gaining experience with plasma vessel conditioning, discharge lengths could be extended gradually. Eventually, discharges lasted up to 6 s, reaching an injected energy of 4 MJ, which is twice the limit originally agreed for the limiter configuration employed during the first operational campaign. At power levels of 4 MW central electron densities reached 3 × 1019 m−3, central electron temperatures reached values of 7 keV and ion temperatures reached just above 2 keV. Important physics studies during this first operational phase include a first assessment of power balance and energy confinement, ECRH power deposition experiments, 2nd harmonic O-mode ECRH using multi-pass absorption, and current drive experiments using electron cyclotron current drive. As in many plasma discharges the electron temperature exceeds the ion temperature significantly, these plasmas are governed by core electron root confinement showing a strong positive electric field in the plasma centre.

- Abstract
Analysis and understanding of wall erosion, material transport and fuel retention are among the most important tasks for ITER and future devices, since these questions determine largely the lifetime and availability of the fusion reactor. These data are also of extreme value to improve the understanding and validate the models of the in vessel build-up of the T inventory in ITER and future D-T devices. So far, research in these areas is largely supported by post-mortem analysis of wall tiles. However, access to samples will be very much restricted in the next-generation devices (such as ITER, JT-60SA, W7-X, etc) with actively cooled plasma-facing components (PFC) and increasing duty cycle. This has motivated the development of methods to measure the deposition of material and retention of plasma fuel on the walls of fusion devices in situ, without removal of PFC samples. For this purpose, laser-based methods are the most promising candidates. Their feasibility has been assessed in a cooperative undertaking in various European associations under EFDA coordination. Different laser techniques have been explored both under laboratory and tokamak conditions with the emphasis to develop a conceptual design for a laser-based wall diagnostic which is integrated into an ITER port plug, aiming to characterize in situ relevant parts of the inner wall, the upper region of the inner divertor, part of the dome and the upper X-point region., QC 20131011

- Abstract
Laser-based methods are investigated for the development of an in situ diagnostic for spatially and temporally resolved characterization of the first wall in fusion devices. Here we report on the first systematic laser-induced ablation spectroscopy (LIAS) measurements carried out on various surface layers in the TEXTOR tokamak. These materials include a-C: D, mixed W/C/Al/D-2, Oerlikon Balzers 'Balinit' diamond-like carbon layers and EK98 fine-grain graphite. In LIAS, the bulk or deposited material is evaporated during the plasma discharge by intense laser radiation. The light emitted by particles entering the edge of the ionizing tokamak plasma is then observed by optical spectroscopy. In the measurements taken, it was found that the studied layers can be identified by their characteristic line emission. A good correlation between the observed line intensity and layer thickness is found. The observed plumes show target material dependence. To analyze layers formed during tokamak operation, further investigation of the ablation process and reference materials for cross calibration is required.

- Abstract
In situ methods to measure the fuel retention and to characterize the material deposition on the wall are highly important for ITER and future fusion devices. Laser-based methods are the most promising candidates (for non-invasive applications) and their feasibility is assessed in a cooperative undertaking in various European associations under EFDA coordination. The work concentrates on three different laser techniques in which the laser light is guided from outside the biological shield by a mirror system through a window onto special wall areas: i) laser induced desorption spectroscopy (LIDS) in which ms laser pulses thermally desorbs the retained fuel from a wall area of about 1cm2 and this fuel is spectroscopically detected in the edge of a running plasma, ii) laser induced ablation spectroscopy (LIAS) in which ns laser pulses ablates material from a small wall spot and the ablated material together with the incorporated fuel is detected in a similar way as in LIDS and iii) laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in which ns (or even ps ) laser pulses produce in front of the irradiated wall spot a plasma plume which (in proper conditions) emits line radiation being a fingerprint of the chemical composition of the ablated materials. The aims are to compare the pros and cons of the methods and propose an optimized solution for ITER. LIDS and LIAS have been developed in the TEXTOR tokamak to a prototype-like status for application in ITER. LIBS has been investigated in several EU laboratories in dedicated lab experiments with a focus on the particular conditions in ITER, including pilot experiments in the TEXTOR tokamak. To enable a clear and fair quantification of the methods, standard deposits of diamond like carbon (DLC) and mixed W/Al/C (with Al mimicing Be) with thicknesses of 2-3 μm deposited on rough and polished W substrates with a known D inventory were prepared using magnetron sputtering and vacuum arc deposition. They were used as reference samples in studies
