Abstract

This book offers innovative perspectives on the intersections between history and memory in Central and Eastern European borderlands. It focuses on the case of Latgale, the multicultural region of eastern Latvia which borders Russia, Belarus and Lithuania, and explores the multiple layers of memories and historical narratives about this borderland in Latvian public history. Based on a detailed analysis of national and regional museums, as well as material from interviews and an expert survey, the study examines how different actors and projects negotiate the borderland’s complex history and attempt to shape it into meaningful narratives in the present. Moving beyond binary ethnolinguistic approaches of “Latvian” versus “Russian” interpretations of the past, a more nuanced analytical framework is developed that compares state-level constructions of national master-narratives, the uses of history for local region-building, the persistence of Soviet official narratives, and transnational initiatives aimed at transcending the conceptual borders of the nation-state. The reader will find this to be a fascinating study into the little-known case of Latgale and a valuable contribution to the broader research fields of memory politics and borderlands in the post-Soviet space.

25. Eddie Modules Are Effective Learning Tools for Developing Quantitative Literacy and Seismological Understanding

Abstract

Environmental Data-Driven Inquiry and Exploration (EDDIE) modules engage students in analysis of data collected by networks of environmental sensors, which are used to study various natural phenomena, such as nutrient loading, climate change, and stream discharge. We compared two approaches to EDDIE module implementation in an undergraduate time-series analysis course. Course goals were to use high-frequency and long-term environmental datasets to improve quantitative literacy, develop data manipulation and analysis skills, construct scientific knowledge about natural phenomena, highlight the inherent variability in real data, and develop informed views about the nature of science (NOS). In both instructional treatments, students explored data and developed skills through a scaffolded in-class analysis and then solved more complex problems in homework assignments. In Treatment 1, engage and explore lesson phases involved discussion of instructor-prepared plots using the think--pair--share method. Conversely, in Treatment 2's engage and explore lesson phases, students prepared graphs and completed activities in a computer lab, which required more guidance in data manipulation and thus contained less structured discussion of data analysis and interpretation. We administered a pre/postquestionnaire to compare learning gains between the two treatments in quantitative literacy, statistical reasoning, nature-of-science (NOS) understanding, and understanding of seismological concepts. Results indicate that EDDIE modules are sufficiently flexible to be effective in both learning environments. Our results indicate that students reacted similarly to both instructional treatments, suggesting that EDDIE modules are flexible enough platforms to achieve measurable learning gains in a variety of pedagogical environments.

28. Attuning to Emotions in the History of Border-Making: The Estonian-Latvian Boundary Commission in 1920.

Abstract

Borders are key sites for the amplification of emotions, yet historians have rarely made emotions into a focal point for studies of boundary-making processes. This article sets out fragmentary evidence for how to read across a fuller array of sources that move us beyond technocratic understandings of boundary commissions to highlight the range of emotional interactions which occurred between boundary commissioners and local populations. It draws on evidence from the Estonian-Latvian Boundary Commission, established in the summer of 1919 to demarcate the international border between the newly independent states of Estonia and Latvia. Petitions sent to the Boundary Commission by the border region inhabitants expressed fear, trepidation or anger about the border proposal and professed feelings of patriotic loyalty to the Estonian or Latvian state. The press derided the Boundary Commission, using humour to convey frustration and shock at the absurdity of the border proposal and tarnish the reputation of the commissioners by portraying them as hot-headed. The accumulating emotional toll of these public sentiments left the boundary commissioners feeling weary and disheartened. Abstract

Gypsum has been used almost exclusively as the mould material for casting sanitary-ware due to its high versatility, strength and homogenous pore distribution. However gypsum moulds have a number of disadvantages including deterioration on contact with water, deformation, long set times and short mould lives such that a large number of moulds are required for a commercial manufacturing processes. These drawbacks have led to attempts to find a new synthetic material to create moulds with similar properties to gypsum with respect to fine homogeneous pores, but with increased durability. Porous PMMA was developed in 1971 for the purpose of moulding ceramics. The basic approach to making the materials has remained unchanged since its commercial introduction with few academic studies undertaken on the formulations. This thesis describes an investigation into porous PMMA from an academic perspective studying the mechanism of formation of the materials and the role of the components in polymerisation. In particular: the surfactant type and level, monomer type, water to monomer ratio and bead size have been probed to assess their effect on the porosity and mechanical strength. A particular importance has been placed on the commercial viability of formulations because gypsum is a relatively inexpensive material and, due to its versatility and ease of manufacture, is still used throughout the ceramics industry. To increase cost competitiveness through spreading the higher cost of the raw materials and capital investment, the mechanical strength of porous PMMA materials has to be significantly greater to increase the number of casting cycles from each mould. In addition, to achieve competitive advantage in the marketplace, a deep understanding of the formulation was undertaken. This should allow for tailoring of the mould properties allowing for specialised moulds for different applications. In addition, this focused approach facilitates cost-savings allowing for the minimum input of raw materials. The thesis is a comprehensive body of work which looks individually at the components assessing their effect on the properties of the final material. In addition, the formation mechanism of the materials has been explored by breaking down the polymerisation into key stages. Highlighted is the excessive use of surfactant in a commercial formulation and the influence of plasticisation of the ligaments by the surfactant and excess monomer. The theory behind the polymerisation process, which generates the ligaments and traps the polymer beads in an immobile matrix, is developed; forming a comprehensive understanding of the formation of porous PMMA materials and factors influencing their development and final properties.

Abstract

Purpose: To assess and compare youth satisfaction with two delivery approaches to a HIV/STD risk reduction intervention targeting adolescents: an on-site, face-to-face (FTF) approach versus a long distance interactive televised (DIT) approach. Methods: A convenience sample of 571 rural adolescents ages 12-16 years who participated in an HIV/STD risk reduction program were assessed by an anonymous, written, process evaluation questionnaire. Factor analysis and reliability testing evaluated psychometric properties. Student's t tests evaluated differences between the two intervention approaches for individual items and the four factors. Results: Factor analysis identified four underlying factors: (1) Interventionist Leadership Characteristics, (2) Interventionist Warmth, (3) Connection, and (4) Programmatic Assessment/Clarity: Student's t tests demonstrated that all four factors consistently favored the FTF over the DIT approach (p less than 0.05). Conclusions: These findings indicate that participants randomized to the FTF conditions were significantly more satisfied than the DIT-based group. These findings highlight the need for research regarding program implementation that may alter acceptability of the adolescent HIV risk reduction intervention approach. (Contains 3 tables.)

Abstract

Objective To assess wrist function, quality of life, and complications in adult patients with a dorsally displaced fracture of the distal radius, treated with either a moulded cast or surgical fixation with K-wires. Design Multicentre randomised clinical superiority trial, Setting 36 hospitals in the UK National Health Service (NHS). Participants 500 adults aged 16 or over with a dorsally displaced fracture of the distal radius, randomised after manipulation of their fracture (255 to moulded cast; 245 to surgical fixation). Interventions Manipulation and moulded cast was compared with manipulation and surgical fixation with K-wires plus cast. Details of the application of the cast and the insertion of the K-wires were at the discretion of the treating surgeon, according to their normal clinical practice. Main outcome measures The primary outcome measure was the Patient Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) score at 12 months (five questions about pain and 10 about function and disability; overall score out of 100 (best score=0 and worst score=100)). Secondary outcomes were PRWE score at three and six months, quality of life, and complications, including the need for surgery due to loss of fracture position in the first six weeks. Results The mean age of participants was 60 years and 417 (83%) were women; 395 (79%) completed follow-up. No statistically significant difference in the PRWE score was seen at 12 months (cast group (n=200), mean 21.2 (SD 23.1); K-wire group (n=195), mean 20.7 (22.3); adjusted mean difference −0.34 (95% confidence interval −4.33 to 3.66), P=0.87). No difference was seen at earlier time points. In the cast group, 33 (13%) of participants needed surgical fixation for loss of fracture position in the first six weeks compared with one revision surgery in the K-wire group (odds ratio 0.02, 95% confidence interval 0.001 to 0.10). Conclusions Among patients with a dorsally displaced distal radius fracture that needed manipulation, surgical fixation with K-wires did not improve patients’ wrist function at 12 months compared with a cast.
