Magnetic frustration is a route that can lead to the emergence of novel ground states, including spin liquids and spin ices. Such frustration can be introduced through either the geometry of lattice structures or by incompatible exchange interactions. Identifying suitable strategies to control the degree of magnetic frustration in real systems is an active field of research. In this study, we devise a design principle for the tuning of frustrated magnetism on the square lattice through the manipulation of nearest (NN) and next-nearest neighbor (NNN) antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange interactions. By studying the magnon excitations in epitaxially-strained La$_2$NiO$_4$ films using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) we show that, in contrast to the cuprates, the dispersion peaks at the AF zone boundary. This indicates the presence of an AF-NNN spin interaction. Using first principles simulations and an effective spin-model, we demonstrate the AF-NNN coupling to be a consequence of the two-orbital nature of La$_2$NiO$_4$. Our results demonstrate that compressive strain can enhance this coupling, providing a design principle for the tunability of frustrated magnetism on a square lattice.

In this work we present a model system built out of artificially layered materials, allowing us to understand the interrelation of magnetic phases with that of the metallic-insulating phase at long length-scales, and enabling new strategies for the design and control of materials in devices. The artificial model system consists of superlattices made of SmNiO$_3$ and NdNiO$_3$ layers -- two members of the fascinating rare earth nickelate family, having different metal-to-insulator and magnetic transition temperatures. By combining two complementary techniques -- resonant elastic x-ray scattering and muon spin relaxation -- we show how the magnetic order evolves, in this complex multicomponent system, as a function of temperature and superlattice periodicity. We demonstrate that the length scale of the coupling between the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases is longer than that of the electronic metal-insulator phase transition -- despite being subsidiary to it. This can be explained via a Landau theory -- where the bulk magnetic energy plus a gradient cost between magnetic and non magnetic phases are considered. These results provide a clear understanding of the coupling of magnetic transitions in systems sharing identical order parameters.

We report hot-wire measurements performed in two very different, co- and counter-rotating flows, in normal and superfluid helium at 1.6 K, 2 K, and 2.3 K. As recently reported, the power spectrum of the hot-wire signal in superfluid flows exhibits a significant bump at high frequency (Diribarne et al. [1]). We confirm that the bump frequency does not depend significantly on the temperature and further extend the previous analysis of the velocity dependence of the bump, over more than one decade of velocity. The main result is that the bump frequency depends on the turbulence intensity of the flow, and that using the turbulent Reynolds number rather than the velocity as a control parameter collapses results from both co- and counter-rotating flows. The vortex shedding model previously proposed, in its current form, does not account for this observation. This suggests that the physical origin of the bump is related to the small scale turbulence properties of the flow. We finally propose some qualitative physical mechanism by which the smallest structures of the flow, at intervortex distance, could affect the heat flux of the hot-wire., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Based on direct numerical simulations with point-like inertial particles, with Stokes numbers, $\textrm{St}=0, 0.5$, $3$, and $6$, transported by homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flows, we present in this letter for the first time evidence for the existence of Markov property in Lagrangian turbulence. We show that the Markov property is valid for a finite step size larger than a Stokes number-dependent Einstein-Markov coherence time scale. This enables the description of multi-scale statistics of Lagrangian particles by Fokker-Planck equations, which can be embedded in an interdisciplinary approach linking the statistical description of turbulence with fluctuation theorems of non-equilibrium stochastic thermodynamics and local flow structures. The formalism allows estimation of the stochastic thermodynamics entropy exchange associated with the particles' Lagrangian trajectories. Entropy consuming trajectories of the particles are related to specific evolution of velocity increments through scales and may be seen as intermittent structures. Statistical features of Lagrangian paths and entropy values are thus fixed by the fluctuation theorems., Comment: Accepted in EPL, 6 pages, 4 figures

The field of oxide spintronics can strongly benefit from the establishment of robust ferromagnetic insulators with near room-temperature Curie temperature. Here we investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of atomically-precise epitaxially-strained thin films of the double perovskite La$_2$NiMnO$_6$ (LNMO) grown by off-axis radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. We find that the films retain both a strong insulating behavior and a bulk-like Curie temperature in the order of 280 K, nearly independently from epitaxial strain conditions. These results suggest a prospective implementation of LNMO films in multi-layer device architectures where a high-temperature ferromagnetic insulating state is a prerequisite., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

Materials with strong electronic correlations host remarkable -- and technologically relevant -- phenomena such as magnetism, superconductivity and metal-insulator transitions. Harnessing and controlling these effects is a major challenge, on which key advances are being made through lattice and strain engineering in thin films and heterostructures, leveraging the complex interplay between electronic and structural degrees of freedom. Here we show that the electronic structure of LaNiO3 can be tuned by means of lattice engineering. We use different substrates to induce compressive and tensile biaxial epitaxial strain in LaNiO3 thin films. Our measurements reveal systematic changes of the optical spectrum as a function of strain and, notably, an increase of the low-frequency free carrier weight as tensile strain is applied. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we show that this apparently counter-intuitive effect is due to a change of orientation of the oxygen octahedra.The calculations also reveal drastic changes of the electronic structure under strain, associated with a Fermi surface Lifshitz transition. We provide an online applet to explore these effects. The experimental value of integrated spectral weight below 2 eV is significantly (up to a factor of 3) smaller than the DFT results, indicating a transfer of spectral weight from the infrared to energies above 2 eV. The suppression of the free carrier weight and the transfer of spectral weight to high energies together indicate a correlation-induced band narrowing and free carrier mass enhancement due to electronic correlations. We use resonant soft X-ray diffraction to track the photo-induced dynamics of the antiferromagnetic structure in a NdNiO$_{3}$ thin film. Femtosecond laser pulses with a photon energy of 0.61 eV, resonant with electron transfer between long-bond and short-bond nickel sites, are used to excite the material and drive an ultrafast insulator-metal transition. Polarization sensitive soft X-ray diffraction, resonant to the nickel L$_{3}$-edge, then probes the evolution of the underlying magnetic spiral as a function of time delay with 80 picosecond time resolution. By modelling the azimuthal dependence of the scattered intensity for different linear X-ray polarizations, we benchmark the changes of the local magnetic moments and the spin alignment. The measured changes are consistent with a reduction of the long-bond site magnetic moments and an alignment of the spins towards a more collinear structure at early time delays.

The transition temperature $T_\textrm{c}$ of unconventional superconductivity is often tunable. For a monolayer of FeSe, for example, the sweet spot is uniquely bound to titanium-oxide substrates. By contrast for La$_{2-\mathrm{x}}$Sr$_\mathrm{x}$CuO$_4$ thin films, such substrates are sub-optimal and the highest $T_\textrm{c}$ is instead obtained using LaSrAlO$_4$. An outstanding challenge is thus to understand the optimal conditions for superconductivity in thin films: which microscopic parameters drive the change in $T_\mathrm{c}$ and how can we tune them? Here we demonstrate, by a combination of x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectroscopy, how the Coulomb and magnetic-exchange interaction of La$_2$CuO$_4$ thin films can be enhanced by compressive strain. Our experiments and theoretical calculations establish that the substrate producing the largest $T_\textrm{c}$ under doping also generates the largest nearest neighbour hopping integral, Coulomb and magnetic-exchange interaction. We hence suggest optimising the parent Mott state as a strategy for enhancing the superconducting transition temperature in cuprates., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures and 2 tables (including Supplementary Information)

We study the temperature dependence of the optical conductivity of rare-earth nickelate films of varying composition and strain close to the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, TN. Two prominent peaks at 0.6 and 1.3 eV, which are characteristic of the insulating phase, display a small but significant increase in intensity when the material passes from para- to antiferromagnetic. This observation indicates the presence of a positive feedback between antiferromagnetic (AF) and bond disproportionation (BD) order. By analyzing the temperature dependence near TN, and using a Landau-type free-energy expression for BD and AF order, we infer that BD order is a necessary condition for the AF phase to appear, and that the antiferromagnetism contributes to stabilization of the bond disproportionation. This model also explains why hysteresis is particularly strong when the transition into the insulating state occurs simultaneously with antiferromagnetic order., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Selective optical excitation of a substrate lattice can drive phase changes across hetero-interfaces. This phenomenon is a non-equilibrium analogue of static strain control in heterostructures and may lead to new applications in optically controlled phase change devices. Here, we make use of time-resolved non-resonant and resonant x-ray diffraction to clarify the underlying physics, and to separate different microscopic degrees of freedom in space and time. We measure the dynamics of the lattice and that of the charge disproportionation in NdNiO3, when an insulator-metal transition is driven by coherent lattice distortions in the LaAlO3 substrate. We find that charge redistribution propagates at supersonic speeds from the interface into the NdNiO3 film, followed by a sonic lattice wave. When combined with measurements of magnetic disordering and of the metal-insulator transition, these results establish a hierarchy of events for ultrafast control at complex oxide hetero-interfaces., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Taking advantage of the large electron escape depth of soft x-ray angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy we report electronic structure measurements of (111)-oriented [LaNiO3/LaMnO3] superlattices and LaNiO3 epitaxial films. For thin films we observe a 3D Fermi surface with an electron pocket at the Brillouin zone center and hole pockets at the zone vertices. Superlattices with thick nickelate layers present a similar electronic structure. However, as the thickness of the LaNiO3 is reduced the superlattices become insulating. These heterostructures do not show a marked redistribution of spectral weight in momentum space but exhibit a pseudogap of 50 meV.

The demand for ever-increasing density of information storage and speed of manipulation boosts an intense search for new magnetic materials and novel ways of controlling the magnetic bit. Here, we report the synthesis of a ferromagnetic photovoltaic CH$_3$NH$_3$(Mn:Pb)I$_3$ material in which the photo-excited electrons rapidly melt the local magnetic order through the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions without heating up the spin system. Our finding offers an alternative, very simple and efficient way of optical spin control, and opens an avenue for applications in low power, light controlling magnetic devices.

We investigate the non-equilibrium insulator-metal transition driven in a SmNiO3 thin film by coherent optical excitation of the LaAlO3 substrate lattice. By probing the transient optical properties over a broad frequency range (100 - 800 cm^-1), we analyze both the time dependent metallic plasma and the infrared optical phonon line shapes. We show that the light-induced metallic phase in SmNiO3 has the same carrier density as the equilibrium metallic phase. We also report that the LaAlO3 substrate acts as a transducer only at the earlier time delays, as the vibrations are driven coherently. No long-lived structural rearrangement takes place in the substrate. Finally, we show that the transient insulator-metal transition occurs both below and above the N\'eel temperature. We conclude that the supersonic melting of magnetic order measured with ultrafast x-rays is not the driving force of the formation of the metallic phase. We posit that the insulator metal transition may origin from the rearrangement of ordered charges at the interface propagating into the film., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Using a combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry and DC transport measurements, we determine the temperature dependence of the optical conductivity of NdNiO$_3$ and SmNiO$_{3}$ films. The optical spectra show the appearance of a characteristic two-peak structure in the near-infrared when the material passes from the metal to the insulator phase. Dynamical mean-field theory calculations confirm this two-peak structure, and allow to identify these spectral changes and the associated changes in the electronic structure. We demonstrate that the insulating phase in these compounds and the associated characteristic two-peak structure are due to the combined effect of bond-disproportionation and Mott physics associated with half of the disproportionated sites. Bulk NdNiO_3 and thin films grown along the pseudocubic (001)_pc axis display a 1st order metal to insulator transition (MIT) together with a N\'eel transition at T=200K. Here, we show that for NdNiO3 films deposited on (111)_pc NdGaO_3 the MIT occurs at T=335K and the N\'eel transition at T=230 K. By comparing transport and magnetic properties of layers grown on substrates with different symmetries and lattice parameters, we demonstrate a particularly large tuning when the epitaxy is realized on (111)_pc surfaces. We attribute this effect to the specific lattice matching conditions imposed along this direction when using orthorhombic substrates.

We report measurements of the dissipation in the Superfluid Helium high REynold number von Karman flow (SHREK) experiment for different forcing conditions, through a regime of global hysteretic bifurcation. Our macroscopical measurements indicate no noticeable difference between the classical fluid and the superfluid regimes, thereby providing evidence of the same dissipative anomaly and response to asymmetry in fluid and superfluid regime. %In the latter case, A detailed study of the variations of the hysteretic cycle with Reynolds number supports the idea that (i) the stability of the bifurcated states of classical turbulence in this closed flow is partly governed by the dissipative scales and (ii) the normal and the superfluid component at these temperatures (1.6K) are locked down to the dissipative length scale., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the behavior of the spectral weight near the Fermi level of NdNiO3 thin films as a function of temperature across the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) by means of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. The spectral weight was found to exhibit thermal hysteresis, similar to that of the dc conductivity. A detailed analysis of the temperature dependence reveals two distinct regimes of spectral loss close to the Fermi level. The temperature evolution of one regime is found to be independent from the MIT.

Transport in ultrathin films of LaNiO3 evolves from a metallic to a strongly localized character as the film's thickness is reduced and the sheet resistance reaches a value close to h/e2, the quantum of resistance in two dimensions. In the intermediate regime, quantum corrections to the Drude low- temperature conductivity are observed; they are accurately described by weak localization theory. Remarkably, the negative magnetoresistance in this regime is isotropic, which points to magnetic scattering associated with the proximity of the system to either a spin glass state or the charge ordered antiferromagnetic state observed in other rare earth nickelates., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PRL

We report experimental results on the relative motion of pairs of solid spheric particles with initial separations in the inertial range of fully developed turbulence in water. The particle densities were in the range of $1 \lessapprox \rho_{p}/\rho_{f} \lessapprox 8$, \textit{i.e.}, from neutrally buoyant to highly inertial; and their sizes were of the Kolmogorov scale. For all particles, we observed a Batchelor like regime, in which particles separated ballistically. Similar to the Batchelor regime for tracers, this regime was observed in the early stages of the relative separation for times $t \lessapprox 0.1 t_0$ with $t_0$ determined by the turbulence energy dissipation rate and the initial separation between particle pairs. In this time interval heavier particles separated faster than fluid tracers. The second order Eulerian velocity structure functions was found to increase with density. In other words, both observations show that the relative velocity between inertial particles was larger than that between tracers. Based on the widely used, simplified equation of motion for inertial point-particles, we derived a model that shows an increase in relative velocity between inertial particles. In its scale dependence, however, it disagrees quantitatively with the experimental results.
