In {\delta}-Ag2/3V2O5 with charge degrees of freedom in V, it is known that the charge ordering state and physical properties of V that appear at low temperatures depend strongly on the ordering state of Ag. In this study, we focused on the Ag ions in the interlayer and studied the structure using synchrotron radiation powder diffraction in dependence on temperature. We found that when the sample is slowly cooled from room temperature and ordering occurs at the Ag sites, V4+/V5+ charge ordering of V and subsequent V4+-V4+ structural dimers are produced. Although quenching the sample from room temperature suppresses the ordering of Ag, annealing at around 160 K promotes partial ordering of Ag and allows a metastable phase to be realized. This metastable phase is maintained even when the temperature is lowered again, producing a remarkable change in low-temperature properties. These results indicate that the ordered state of Ag, which is the key to control the charge-ordered state and physical properties, can be controlled by low-temperature annealing. The results of this study may provide a methodology for the realization of metastable states in a wide range of material groups of vanadium compounds, where competition among various charge ordered states underlies the physical properties., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Intuitive entropic interpretations of the thermoelectric effect in metals predict an isotropic Seebeck coefficient at high temperatures in the incoherent regime even in anisotropic metals since entropy is not directional. $\mathrm{Sr}_2\mathrm{Ru}\mathrm{O}_4$ is an enigmatic material known for a well characterised anisotropic normal state and unconventional superconductivity. Recent ab-initio transport calculations of $\mathrm{Sr}_2\mathrm{Ru}\mathrm{O}_4$ that include the effect of strong electronic correlations predicted an enhanced high-temperature anisotropy of the Seebeck coefficient at temperatures above 300 K, but experimental evidence is missing. From measurements on clean $\mathrm{Sr}_2\mathrm{Ru}\mathrm{O}_4$ single crystals along both crystallographic directions, we find that the Seebeck coefficient becomes increasingly isotropic upon heating towards room temperature as generally expected. Above 300 K, however, $S$ acquires a new anisotropy which rises up to the highest temperatures measured (750 K), in qualitative agreement with calculations. CsO2 is a member of the family of alkali superoxides (formula AO2 with A= Na, K, Rb and Cs) that exhibit magnetic behavior arising from open $p$-shell electrons residing on O2- molecules. We use neutron diffraction to solve the crystal and magnetic structures of CsO2, and observe a complex series of structures on cooling from room temperature to 1.6 K. These include an incommensurate modulation along the a-axis of the structure at intermediate temperatures, which then locks into a commensurate modulation that doubles the unit cell compared to the previously supposed orthorhombic unit cell. In both incommensurate and commensurate phases our structural solution involves a staggering of the cesium ion positions along the b-axis, in contrast to studies of other alkali superoxides in which staggered tilts of the O2- dimers relative to the c-axis are seen. Below T ~ 10 K we observe magnetic Bragg reflections arising from an antiferromagnetically ordered structure with a wavevector of k = (0,0,0) (relative to the doubled crystallographic unit cell), with moments that point predominantly along the b-axis with a small component along the a-axis that hints at possible anisotropic exchange coupling (consistent with the crystal structure). Measurements of the magnetic Bragg reflections in an applied magnetic field suggest a spin-flop transition takes place between 2 T and 4 T in which moments likely flop to point along the crystallographic a-axis. Our measurements indicate that CsO2 is an interesting example of magnetic properties being inherently linked to the crystal structure, in that the staggered displacement of the cesium ions activates antisymmetric exchange which then permits the observed spin canting., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables

We use a combination of variable-temperature / variable-pressure neutron powder diffraction, variable-pressure inelastic neutron scattering, and quantum chemical calculations to interrogate the behaviour of the negative thermal expansion (NTE) material $^{114}$Cd(CN)$_2$ under hydrostatic pressure. We determine the equation of state of the ambient-pressure phase, and discover the so-called `warm hardening' effect whereby the material becomes elastically stiffer as it is heated. We also identify a number of high-pressure phases, and map out the phase behaviour of Cd(CN)$_2$ over the range $0\leq p\leq0.5$\,GPa, $100\leq T\leq300$\,K. As expected for an NTE material, the low-energy phonon frequencies are found to soften under pressure, and we determine an effective Gr{\"u}neisen parameter for these modes. Finally, we show that the elastic behaviour of Cd(CN)$_2$ is sensitive to the local Cd coordination environment, which suggests an interplay between short- (phononic) and long-timescale (cyanide flips) fluctuations in Cd(CN)$_2$.

The band topology of magnetic semimetals is of interest both from the fundamental science point of view and with respect to potential spintronics and memory applications. Unfortunately, only a handful of suitable topological semimetals with magnetic order have been discovered so far. One such family that hosts these characteristics is the antiperovskites, A$_3$BO, a family of 3D Dirac semimetals. The A=Eu$^{2+}$ compounds magnetically order with multiple phases as a function of applied magnetic field. Here, by combining band structure calculations with neutron diffraction and magnetic measurements, we establish the antiperovskite Eu$_3$PbO as a new topological magnetic semimetal. This topological material exhibits a multitude of different topological phases with ordered Eu moments which can be easily controlled by an external magnetic field. The topological phase diagram of Eu$_3$PbO includes an antiferromagnetic Dirac phase, as well as ferro- and ferrimagnetic phases with both Weyl points and nodal lines. For each of these phases, we determine the bulk band dispersions, the surface states, and the topological invariants by means of $\textit{ab-initio}$ and tight-binding calculations. Our discovery of these topological phases introduces Eu$_3$PbO as a new platform to study and manipulate the interplay of band topology, magnetism, and transport.

When spin-orbit-entangled $d$-electrons reside on a honeycomb lattice, rich quantum states are anticipated to emerge, as exemplified by the $d^5$ Kitaev materials. Distinct yet equally intriguing physics may be realized with a $d$-electron count other than $d^5$. We found that the layered ruthenate Ag$_3$LiRu$_2$O$_6$ with $d^4$ Ru$^{4+}$ ions at ambient pressure forms a honeycomb lattice of spin-orbit-entangled singlets, which is a playground for frustrated excitonic magnetism. Under pressure, the singlet state does not develop the expected excitonic magnetism but experiences two successive transitions to other nonmagnetic phases, first to an intermediate phase with moderate distortion of honeycomb lattice, and eventually to a high-pressure phase with very short Ru-Ru dimer bonds. While the strong dimerization in the high-pressure phase originates from a molecular orbital formation as in the sister compound Li$_2$RuO$_3$, the intermediate phase represents a spin-orbit-coupled $J$-dimer state which is stabilized by the admixture of upper-lying $J_{\rm eff} = 1$-derived states. We argue that the $J$-dimer state is induced by a pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect associated with the low-lying spin-orbital excited states and is unique to spin-orbit-entangled $d^4$ systems. The discovery of competing singlet phases demonstrates rich spin-orbital physics of $d^4$ honeycomb compounds and paves the way for realization of unconventional magnetism., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

The pyrochlore ruthenate In$_2$Ru$_2$O$_7$ displays a subtle competition between spin-orbital entanglement and molecular orbital formation. At room temperature, a spin-orbit-entangled singlet state was identified. With decreasing temperature, In$_2$Ru$_2$O$_7$ undergoes multiple structural transitions and eventually forms a nonmagnetic ground state with semi-isolated Ru$_2$O units on the pyrochlore lattice. The dominant hopping through the Ru-O-Ru linkage leads to molecular orbital formation within the Ru$_2$O units. This molecular orbital formation is unique in that it involves the O$^{2-}$ anions, unlike the transition-metal dimers observed in systems with edge-sharing octahedra. We argue that the covalent character of In-O bonds plays a pivotal role in the structural transitions and molecular orbital formation and such bonding character of "$A$-site" ions is an important ingredient for electronic phase competition in complex transition metal oxides.

Remarkably, doping isovalent $d^{10}$ and $d^0$ cations onto the $B$'' site in $A_2B$'$B$''O$_6$ double perovskites has the power to direct the magnetic interactions between magnetic $B$' cations. This is due to changes in orbital hybridization, which favors different superexchange pathways, and leads to the formation of alternative magnetic structures depending on whether $B$'' is $d^{10}$ or $d^0$. Furthermore, the competition generated by introducing mixtures of $d^{10}$ and $d^0$ cations can drive the material into the realms of exotic quantum magnetism. Here, a W$^{6+}$ $d^0$ dopant was introduced to a $d^{10}$ hexagonal perovskite Ba$_2$CuTeO$_6$, which possesses a spin ladder geometry of Cu$^{2+}$ cations, creating a Ba$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ solid solution ($x$ = 0 - 0.3). Neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction show that W$^{6+}$ is almost exclusively substituted for Te$^{6+}$ on the corner-sharing site within the spin ladder, in preference to the face-sharing site between ladders. This means the intra-ladder interactions are selectively tuned by the $d^0$ cations. Bulk magnetic measurements suggest this suppresses magnetic ordering in a similar manner to that observed for the spin-liquid like material Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$. Metal additive manufacturing (AM) by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) builds upon fundamentals established in the field of laser welding which include the influence of gas and plume dynamics on weld depth and quality. L-PBF demands a thorough investigation of the complex thermophysical phenomena that occur where the laser interacts with the metal powder bed. In particular, melt pool turbulence and evaporation are influenced by the ambient gas chemistry and pressure. This paper presents the design and validation of high pressure laser melting (HPLM) testbed; this accommodates bare metal plate samples as well as manually-coated single powder layers, and operates at up to 300 psig. The open architecture of this testbed allows for full control of all relevant laser parameters in addition to ambient gas pressure and gas flow over the build area. Representative melt tracks and rasters on bare plate and powder are examined in order to validate system performance, and preliminary analysis concludes that pressure has a significant impact on melt pool aspect ratio. The HPLM system thus enables careful study pressure effects on processing of common L-PBF materials, and can be applied in the future to materials that are challenging to process under ambient pressure, such as those with high vapor pressures., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures, submitted to Additive Manufacturing

A key question regarding the unconventional superconductivity of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ remains whether the order parameter is single- or two-component. Under a hypothesis of two-component superconductivity, uniaxial pressure is expected to lift their degeneracy, resulting in a split transition. The most direct and fundamental probe of a split transition is heat capacity. Here, we report measurement of heat capacity of samples subject to large and highly homogeneous uniaxial pressure. We place an upper limit on the heat-capacity signature of any second transition of a few per cent of that of the primary superconducting transition. The normalized jump in heat capacity, $\Delta C/C$, grows smoothly as a function of uniaxial pressure, favouring order parameters which are allowed to maximize in the same part of the Brillouin zone as the well-studied van Hove singularity. We report the crystal structures and magnetic properties of two psuedo-polymorphs of the $S=1/2$ Ti$^{3+}$ coordination framework, KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$xH$_2$O. Single-crystal X-ray and powder neutron diffraction measurements on $\alpha$-KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$xH$_2$O confirm its structure in the tetragonal $I4/mcm$ space group with a square planar arrangement of Ti$^{3+}$ ions. Magnetometry and specific heat measurements reveal weak antiferromagnetic interactions, with $J_1\approx7$ K and $J_2/J_1=0.11$ indicating a slight frustration of nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions. Below $1.8$ K, $\alpha$ undergoes a transition to G-type antiferromagnetic order with magnetic moments aligned along the $c$ axis of the tetragonal structure. The estimated ordered moment of Ti$^{3+}$ in $\alpha$ is suppressed from its spin-only value to $0.62(3)~\mu_B$, thus verifying the two-dimensional nature of the magnetic interactions within the system. $\beta$-KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$2H$_2$O, on the other hand, realises a three-dimensional diamond-like magnetic network of Ti$^{3+}$ moments within a hexagonal $P6_222$ structure. An antiferromagnetic exchange coupling of $J\approx54$ K -- an order of magnitude larger than in $\alpha$ -- is extracted from magnetometry and specific heat data. $\beta$ undergoes N\'eel ordering at $T_N=28$ K, with the magnetic moments aligned within the $ab$ plane and a slightly reduced ordered moment of $0.79~\mu_B$ per Ti$^{3+}$. Through density-functional theory calculations, we address the origin of the large difference in the exchange parameters between the $\alpha$ and $\beta$ psuedo-polymorphs. Given their observed magnetic behaviors, we propose $\alpha$-KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$xH$_2$O and $\beta$-KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$2H$_2$O as close to ideal model $S=1/2$ Heisenberg square and diamond lattice antiferromagnets, respectively., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We present an extensive experimental and theoretical study on the low-temperature magnetic properties of the monoclinic anhydrous alum compound BaMo(PO$_4$)$_2$. The magnetic susceptibility reveals strong antiferromagnetic interactions $\theta_{CW} = -167$~K and long-range magnetic order at $T_N=22$~K, in agreement with a recent report. Powder neutron diffraction furthermore shows that the order is collinear, with the moments near the $ac$ plane. Neutron spectroscopy reveals a large excitation gap $\Delta = 15$~meV in the low-temperature ordered phase, suggesting a much larger easy-axis spin anisotropy than anticipated. However, the large anisotropy justifies the relatively high ordered moment, N\'{e}el temperature, and collinear order observed experimentally, and is furthermore reproduced in a first principles calculations using a new computational scheme. We therefore propose BaMo(PO$_4$)$_2$ to host $S=1$ antiferromagnetic chains with large easy-axis anisotropy, which has been theoretically predicted to realize novel excitation continua., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

In the triangular layered magnet PdCrO2 the intralayer magnetic interactions are strong, however the lattice structure frustrates interlayer interactions. In spite of this, long-range, 120$^\circ$ antiferromagnetic order condenses at $T_N = 38$~K. We show here through neutron scattering measurements under in-plane uniaxial stress and in-plane magnetic field that this occurs through a spontaneous lifting of the three-fold rotational symmetry of the nonmagnetic lattice, which relieves the interlayer frustration. We also show through resistivity measurements that uniaxial stress can suppress thermal magnetic disorder within the antiferromagnetic phase., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

We explore the interplay of electron-electron correlations and spin-orbit coupling in the model Fermi liquid Sr2RuO4 using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our precise measurement of the Fermi surface confirms the importance of spin-orbit coupling in this material and reveals that its effective value is enhanced by a factor of about two, due to electronic correlations. The self-energies for the $\beta$ and $\gamma$ sheets are found to display significant angular dependence. By taking into account the multi-orbital composition of quasiparticle states, we determine self-energies associated with each orbital component directly from the experimental data. This analysis demonstrates that the perceived angular dependence does not imply momentum-dependent many-body effects, but arises from a substantial orbital mixing induced by spin-orbit coupling. A comparison to single-site dynamical mean-field theory further supports the notion of dominantly local orbital self-energies, and provides strong evidence for an electronic origin of the observed non-linear frequency dependence of the self-energies, leading to `kinks' in the quasiparticle dispersion of Sr2RuO4., Comment: PRX accepted
