7. Mixed Learning- and Model-Based Mass Estimation of Heavy Vehicles.

Abstract

This research utilized long short-term memory (LSTM) to oversee an RLS-based mass estimator based on longitudinal vehicle dynamics for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) instead of using the predefined rules. A multilayer LSTM network that analyzed parameters such as vehicle speed, longitudinal acceleration, engine torque, engine speed, and estimated mass from the RLS mass estimator was employed as the supervision method. The supervisory LSTM network was trained offline to recognize when the vehicle was operated so that the RLS estimator gave an estimate with the desired accuracy and the network was used as a reliability flag. High-fidelity simulation software was employed to collect data used to train and test the network. A threshold on the error percentage of the RLS mass estimator was used by the network to check the reliability of the algorithm. The preliminary findings indicate that the reliability of the RLS mass estimator could be predicted by using the LSTM network. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We consider stationary consensus protocols for networks of dynamic agents with switching topologies. The measure of the neighbors' state is affected by Unknown But Bounded disturbances. Here the main contribution is the formulation and solution of what we call the $\epsilon$-consensus problem, where the states are required to converge in a tube of ray $\epsilon$ asymptotically or in finite time., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

We present an innovative smartphone-centric tracking system for indoor and outdoor environments, based on the joint utilization of dead-reckoning and computer vision (CV) techniques. The system is explicitly designed for visually impaired people (although it could be easily generalized to other users) and it is built under the assumption that special reference signals, such as painted lines, colored tapes or tactile pavings are deployed in the environment for guiding visually impaired users along pre-defined paths. Thanks to highly optimized software, we are able to execute the CV and sensor-fusion algorithms in run-time on low power hardware such as a normal smartphone, precisely tracking the users movements. Abstract

Congestion control mechanisms in today’s Internet represent perhaps the largest artificial feedback system ever deployed, and yet one that has evolved mostly outside the scope of control theory. This can be explained by the tight constraints of decentralization and simplicity of implementation in this problem, which would appear to rule out most mathematically-based designs. Nevertheless, a recently developed framework based on fluid flow models has allowed for a belated injection of control theory into the area, with some pleasant surprises. As described in this chapter, there is enough special structure to allow us to “guess” designs with mathematically provable properties that hold in arbitrary networks, and which involve a modest complexity in implementation.

Abstract

Systems Biology is an emerging new field defined as the study of biology as an integrated system of components that act interdependently to accomplish certain functions. This approach holds the promise of offering precious insight into aspects of biological organization that cannot be identified through a reductionist approach concerned solely with the study of individual molecules. In this work, we illustrate this viewpoint through the example of the bacterial heat shock response. The heat shock response is an important mechanism that combats harmful effects of an unmediated increase in temperature. Such an increase in temperature causes the unfolding or aggregation of the cellular proteins, which imposes a tremendous amount of stress on the cell. The heat shock response is implemented through an elaborate system of controls whose purpose is to refold denatured proteins, therefore restoring their normal function. In this paper, we present a deterministic model for the heat shock response. We use this model to gain insight into the design and performance objectives of this response. We then provide a stochastic treatment based on the Stochastic Simulation Algorithm of Gillepsie [18]. This stochastic investigation validates the use of the deterministic approach in modeling the heat shock response, and motivates the investigation of feedback structures that play a role in attenuating stochastic fluctuations.

Abstract

In multi-retailer inventory control the possibility of sharing setup costs motivates communication and coordination among the retailers. We solve the problem of finding suboptimal distributed reordering policies that minimize setup, ordering, storage, and shortage costs incurred by the retailers over a finite horizon. Neuro-dynamic programming (NDP) reduces the computational complexity of the solution algorithm from exponential to polynomial on the number of retailers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
