NEWSERA Blueprints for citizen science communication (#citscicomm) with and for quadruple helix stakeholders (citizens and society at large, academic scientists, public sector and policymakers, industry and SMES) and science and data journalists is an instrument that can serve a general audience, including those who are planning to start a citizen science (CS) project, those who want to improve and/or rethink their communication strategies in order to increase specific target audiences, or those who want to enlarge their scope of action by involving the different actors of the quadruple helix model and the media. The road for CS projects establishment and sustainability is long and there are many barriers to be faced. But you are not alone! Together with 39 CS projects from Italy, Spain and Portugal, the NEWSERA Pilots, we have tested the NEWSERA methodology for the co-design, implementation, iterative assessment and validation of communication strategies directed to each of the quadruple helix stakeholders and science and data journalists. This was performed through our #CitSciComm Labs, dedicated to each individual stakeholder, consisting of three rounds of workshops, replicated in each of the participating countries, throughout three years. In this series of five blueprints, NEWSERA brings the learnings of this co-created process together with our pilots, invited stakeholders and science communication experts (NEWSERA Sounding Board) that was complemented with mentoring, capacity building and networking sessions, generating knowledge, recommendations and useful resources. NEWSERA aims to show the virtues of CS as an inclusive, broad and powerful science communication mechanism that increases trust in science communication and, in turn, in science overall, while opening up science and innovation to society, raising awareness and knowledge in science, and reducing the chances of incurring in fake news, by means of promoting critical thinking. NEWSERA Policy brief 2 assesses the main findings and impacts from the NEWSERA project as well as policy recommendations in science communication of citizen science initiatives addressing different stakeholders of the quadruple helix innovation model, more specifically the public sector and policy makers.

Citizen Science is believed to contribute significantly to the democratisation of science, engaging non-scientists in scientific research. Participatory approaches to science communication share the same interest through public participation and public engagement. In the attempt to connect these two debates both theoretically and empirically, we provide an analysis of the communication tools and strategies used by 157 Citizen Science projects across the EU, UK, and Switzerland. Our analysis reports that the CS projects surveyed tend to interpret communication as a disseminating activity, rather than as a tool to promote appropriate communication-based encounters with both project participants and other potential target audiences.

L’organizzazione algoritmica: tecnologia, performance e automazione

The analysis I bring to the present symposium about contamination of practice theories concentrates on potential reconfiguration of domestic waste management as social practice through the installation of Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs). Being them designed to collect plastic bottles and caps assigning a reward to whom bestows them, this research concentrates on RVMs functioning and the re-composition of everyday practices they are supposed to bring. The analysis re-contaminates theories of practices encompassing consumptions studies, sustainability and Actor-Network Theory’s concepts within the broader framework of environmental sociology. These three scholarships already contaminated theories of practices and contributed sensibly to strengthen their application. I will review the essence of these contributions and, moving from that, I will further explore the agency of objects within everyday social practices relying on the case study of RVMs. Through media analysis further informed by fieldnotes about direct observation and informal interviews, I will reconstruct the RVM rationale highlighting the connections with material arrangements of everyday practices., Sociologica, Vol 13, No 3 (2019)
