In contemporary Italian, the particle né has the function of introducing the elements of negative correlative constructions. A diachronic survey of its distribution shows, however, that in old Italian varieties it had multiple functions, which continued, with different degrees of productivity, the properties of the Latin ancestor nec. This study argues that the particle was targeted by a process of semantic weakening, which led it to specialize for the correlative uses, and that this process was triggered by the changes that affected the syntax of negation from Latin to Old Italian.

The present paper analyses multilingual practices in the primary schools of Bologna (Italy). More specifically, we investigate the linguistic repertoires of a sample of 78 students, as well as their self-assessments of their reading-writing skills. The analysis is based on a questionnaire administered in 11 highly multilingual classrooms, in which at least 60% of the students spoke more than one language. The results show that, on the one hand, Italian is indicated as part of the linguistic repertoire by almost all the interviewees; on the other hand, the majority of the students reported to have high-level reading-writing skills in Italian, regardless of the composition of their linguistic repertoire. Finally, we present the preliminary results of a writing task in Italian that we administered to a sub- sample of students, in order to verify the impact of multilingualism on writing skills through the comparison between the written production of multilingual and monolingual speakers.

Questo volume è dedicato agli insegnanti delle scuole italiane, che ogni giorno entrano in classe disposti a cogliere le sfide e le opportunità rappresentate dalla presenza sempre più sensibile di allievi plurilingui. I contributi qui raccolti hanno lo scopo di aiutare gli insegnanti a valorizzare le lingue degli allievi di cittadinanza non italiana (sia quelli di recente migrazione, sia quelli nati in Italia), fornendo spunti per includere aspetti relativi al plurilinguismo nelle attività didattiche. Il volume contiene una serie di brevi capitoli mirati a descrivere le lingue straniere maggior- mente presenti nelle scuole italiane, in modo che gli insegnanti possano approfondire la conoscen- za dei principali aspetti storico-culturali e strutturali di queste lingue, e trovare in questa conoscenza spunto per percorsi di insegnamento che coinvolgano l’intera classe.

In questo capitolo introduttivo, vorremmo motivare la ragione d’essere di questo volume, ra- gionando sui suoi principali obiettivi: la valorizzazione del plurilinguismo in classe, che sarà l’og- getto della sezione 2, e la gestione efficace di interventi di potenziamento linguistico nella lingua della comunità, l’italiano, i cui presupposti verranno discussi nella sezione 3.

By means of the study of Latin focus-sensitive negation nec (‘furthermore not’; ‘neither’; ‘not even’), I address a more general question on the scope and the cyclicity of semantic change. I review Lehmann’s syntagmatic parameters of grammaticalization (structural scope, bondedness, syntagmatic variability) with the aim of evaluating to what extent they are reflected in some types of semantic change. With nec we see the evolution, from Latin to Romance, of a discourse-structuring particle with an additive component into the building block of new emphatic (scalar) negative polarity items, which in turn are later reanalyzed as elements of Negative Concord (endowed with uninterpretable formal features). I argue that an important aspect of this change concerns the way alternatives to the focused element are retrieved in the context. I propose that increase in bondedness and decrease in syntagmatic variability correlate with a change in the form taken by alternatives, which decrease in scope from discourse units to individual alternatives.

La concordanza negativa è una strategia per esprimere la negazione di frase che si riscontra piuttosto frequentemente nelle lingue. Le dimensioni di variazione individuate dagli studi tipologici pongono interessanti interrogativi dal punto di vista della teoria sintattica, in particolare per quanto riguarda la distinzione tra concordanza negativa simmetrica e asimmetrica. Il presente contributo rappresenta una riflessione su questi temi attraverso l’esame dei dati del greco classico, che è caratterizzato da un sistema asimmetrico con interessanti peculiarità rispetto a quelli maggiormente studiati. Sulla base di questi dati, si propone un’interpretazione originale dei fattori che determinano l’esistenza della concordanza negativa asimmetrica.

Il contributo descrive il progetto “La classe plurilingue. Ricerca sulla complessità linguistica per una didattica inclusiva”, attualmente in corso presso il Dipartimento di Filologia Classica e Italianistica dell’Università di Bologna (2018-2020), presentandone le finalità, la metodologia adottata e i primi risultati raggiunti. Il fine ultimo del progetto è indagare le pratiche del plurilinguismo nella scuola primaria, con un duplice obiettivo: (i) sensibilizzare allievi, genitori e docenti sugli effetti positivi del plurilinguismo, attraverso interventi didattici mirati e attività di formazione sul tema; (ii) fornire ai docenti strumenti di supporto per trasformare la situazione di plurilinguismo in classe in una situazione di arricchimento e crescita culturale per tutti. The multilingual class: neomultiilingualism, self-evaluation and valorization The article describes the project “The multilingual class. Research on linguistic complexity for inclusive teaching”, currently underway at the Department of Classical and Italianistic Philology of the University of Bologna (2018-2020), presenting its aims, the methodology adopted and the initial results. The ultimate aim of the project is to investigate the practices of multilingualism in primary school, with a twofold objective: (i) to make pupils, parents and teachers aware of the positive effects of multilingualism, through targeted educational interventions and training activities on the subject; (ii) to provide teachers with support tools to transform the multilingualism in the classroom into a source of enrichment and cultural growth for all., Italiano LinguaDue, V. 12 N. 1 (2020)

“Chi siamo? e da dove veniamo?” sono domande che occupano l’umanità fin dall’origine del pensiero. Tuttavia non capita tutti i giorni che una disciplina umanistica giunga alla scoperta di informazioni che ci permettano di alzarci dalla nostra scrivania e indicare un punto più o meno preciso sul mappamondo in risposta a tali domande. Questa impresa è riuscita alla linguistica.

El llatí clàssic disposa de partícules negatives com ara neque / nec i ne … quidem ‘ni, ni tan sols’, que poden expressar la negació oracional i, alhora, presentar focus estret en algun component de l’oració. Aquestes partícules són elements multifuncionals que poden expressar diversos tipus de focus (additiu o escalar) i, en el cas de neque / nec, també tenen una funció coordinativa i d’estructuració del discurs. En aquest treball investigo la complexa interacció dels factors semàntics i sintàctics que regeixen la seva distribució i interpretació. Destaco les condicions estructurals i les contextuals relacionades amb el significat que afavoreixen la interpretació additiva o l’escalar, i proposo una anàlisi de l’estructura interna complexa de les partícules. També tracto de les implicacions diacròniques de la meva anàlisi, en concret amb relació al paper que tenen les continuacions romàniques de nec., Classical Latin displays negative particles, like neque / nec and ne…quidem ‘neither, not even’, that can express sentential negation while at the same time narrowly focusing on some constituent of the clause. These particles are multifunctional elements that can express various types of focus (additive or scalar) and, in the case of neque / nec, also have a coordinative and a discourse-structuring function. In this work I investigate the complex interplay of semantic and syntactic factors that govern their distribution and interpretation. I single out the structural and meaning-related contextual conditions favoring the additive or the scalar interpretation, and I propose an analysis of the complex internal structure of the particles. I also discuss the diachronic implications of my analysis, in particular with respect to the role played by the Romance continuations of nec.
