The article discusses theoretical repercussions of a number of diachronic corpus studies establishing the patters of development of marked indefinites across languages (Aguilar-Guevara et al. 2012). The focus is on the case of wh-based free choice (FC) indefinites. After summarising the key results of two studies on the historical development of Spanish cualquiera and Dutch wie dan ook, we present a semantic analysis of the diachronic phases of these two FC indefinites demonstrating how historical data provide additional support for the abstract operators posited by analyses in Alternative Semantics style (Kratzer and Shimoyama 2002, Aloni 2007, Menéndez-Benito 2010).

The aim of this paper is to investigate the use of Japanese adjectives iroiro and samazama whenever they are added to category labels, with the aim of making reference to conceptual categories. In real-life interactions, when speakers want to designate specific contextually relevant categories, they can use a wide range of linguistic strategies, from constructions that rely on the mention of category members (i.e. exemplification), to the creation of complex ad hoc labels. On the contrary, the designation of broader superordinate categories seems less straightforward and is made even more complex by inferential processes like lexical narrowing that favor more contextually dependent interpretation. In this regard, we will argue that the use of adjectives like iroiro and samazama (‘various’) that explicitly stress numerosity and heterogeneity is frequently exploited by speakers to stop contextual inferences, guiding the hearer to construe broader superordinate categories. In particular, we identify heterogeneity as the semantic component that triggers broadening inferences, discussing its role in categorization processes. Finally, we will also argue that the use of adjectives stressing numerosity can be used by speakers to further emphasize the non-exhaustivity of a given linguistic construction, facilitating the construal of reference to conceptual categories.

La concordanza negativa è una strategia per esprimere la negazione di frase che si riscontra piuttosto frequentemente nelle lingue. Le dimensioni di variazione individuate dagli studi tipologici pongono interessanti interrogativi dal punto di vista della teoria sintattica, in particolare per quanto riguarda la distinzione tra concordanza negativa simmetrica e asimmetrica. Il presente contributo rappresenta una riflessione su questi temi attraverso l’esame dei dati del greco classico, che è caratterizzato da un sistema asimmetrico con interessanti peculiarità rispetto a quelli maggiormente studiati. Sulla base di questi dati, si propone un’interpretazione originale dei fattori che determinano l’esistenza della concordanza negativa asimmetrica.

Questo contributo presenta il percorso di grammaticalizzazione, all’apparenza alquanto peculiare, che ha portato dal nome proprio "Bahatur" (un antico prestito di origine bulgaro-turca) all’attuale morfema concessivo ungherese "bár", passando per l’aggettivo "bátor" ‘coraggioso’ e per l’avverbio modale di predicato "bátran" ‘coraggiosamente’, per il focalizzatore scalare ed avverbio di atteggiamento proposizionale "bátor" (poi "bár") ‘almeno / magari’, e per il morfema concessivo "bátor"; tale sviluppo diacronico si allinea ai parametri evolutivi previsti: l’erosione fonetica, l’indebolimento semantico (con il passaggio dai significati più concreti e prototipicamente lessicali dell’aggettivo e dell’avverbio modale di predicato a quelli più astratti e prototipicamente grammaticali del focalizzatore scalare ed avverbio di atteggiamento proposizionale e del morfema concessivo), la decategorializzazione con perdita di autonomia sintattica, e l’ampliamento e la generalizzazione contestuali. Per situare "bár" nel suo micro-sistema grammaticale vengono però prima descritti i tre tipi di costrutti concessivi che come in molte altre lingue esistono anche nell’ungherese contemporaneo.

Il presente contributo mira a fornire una panoramica del fenomeno conosciuto come plurazionalità nelle lingue del mondo. Dopo una breve introduzione, mostrerò le principali funzioni che le marche plurazionali codificano a livello interlinguistico e cercherò di spiegare la loro multifunzionalità tramite il metodo delle mappe semantiche. Passerò poi ad analizzare le principali strategie di marcatura e a discutere uno dei problemi teorici ad esse correlati, nello specifico, se si possa realmente parlare di suppletivismo per quanto riguarda la strategia dell’alternanza della base. Quindi presenterò quali sono le sorgenti diacroniche che è possibile identificare a livello interlinguistico. Infine, mi soffermerò a riflettere sulle difficoltà di chi ha tentato di classificare le costruzioni plurazionali in categorie grammaticali prestabilite e considerate come universalmente valide. Alla luce dei dati analizzati, mostrerò come in realtà la comparazione tipologica non possa basarsi sulle categorie linguistiche, ma su concetti creati ad hoc (comparative concept) dai linguisti per poter rendere conto della diversità linguistica.

Although Latin displays many characteristics of nominative/accusative alignment, it also exhibits a number of properties that are typical of active/inactive linguistic systems. More specifically, the Latin verbal clause displays an active/inactive distinction, as it regularly marks, through the occurrence of dedicated morphological strategies, the presence of non-agentive as opposed to agentive contexts. This dissertation explores the syntactic motivations behind this opposition, addressing the crucial question about the relationship between syntax and morphology. The claim is made that verbal morphology in Latin is always syntactically motivated, since it directly reflects the difference between active and inactive structures. In particular, deponent verbs are shown not to be a case of syntax-morphology mismatch: these verbs exhibit inactive morphology because of their non-agentive properties. Moreover, it will be argued that syntax and semantics are closely related to each other within the syntactic computation. From this perspective, this thesis also provides an account of the development of a number of analytic constructions in Romance: perfective, possessive and deontic periphrases. Substantial attention is devoted to the diachronic study of the Romance auxiliation patterns occurring in these constructions and to their relationship with alignment and argument structure. The main claim is that the Romance outcomes of these periphrases are closely related to the active/inactive opposition characterizing the Latin system and to the alignment changes that characterized the passage from Latin to Romance. Therefore, these developments cannot be seen as isolated phenomena, but must be understood as the various manifestations of a systematic change affecting the whole linguistic system. Finally, the analysis and investigation of these diachronic facts confirms that syntactic reanalysis is one of the major forces at the basis of language change. This study will be of relevance to anyone interested in diachronic syntax, historical linguistics, classical philology and Italian dialectology.
