Abstract The Late Triassic Carnian Pluvial Episode (CPE) was a time of biological turnover and environmental perturbations. Within the CPE interval, C-isotope and sedimentary records indicate multiple pulses of depleted carbon into the atmosphere–ocean system linked to discrete enhancements of the hydrological cycle. Data suggest a similar cascade of events to other extinctions, including being potentially driven by emplacement of a large igneous province (LIP). The age of the Wrangellia LIP overlaps that of the CPE, but a direct link between volcanism and the pulsed CPE remains elusive. We present sedimentary Hg concentrations from Western Tethys successions to investigate volcanic activity through the previously established CPE global negative C-isotope excursions (NCIEs). Higher Hg concentrations and Hg/TOC are recorded just before and during NCIEs and siliciclastic inputs. The depositional settings suggest volcanic Hg inputs into the basins over the NCIEs rather than increases of Hg drawdown or riverine transport. Differences in Hg and Hg/TOC signals between the basins might be linked to coeval LIP style or the temporal resolution of the sedimentary successions. Overall, our new data provide support for a link between pulses of Wrangellia LIP volcanism, NCIEs, and humid phases that mark the CPE in the Western Tethys.

The Carnian Pluvial Episode (CPE) has been recognized as a time of plant radiations and originations, likely related to observed swift changes from xerophytic to more hygrophytic floras. This suggests that the increasing humidity causally resulting from LIP volcanism was the trigger for these changes in the terrestrial realm. Understanding the cause and effects of the CPE on the plant realm, requires study of well-preserved floras that are precisely aligned with the CPE. We therefore focus on the best age-constrained section within the CPE for the terrestrial to marginal marine environment to understand the floristic composition at the early CPE. This is found in the Dolomites, Italy, and is remarkable for the preservation of the oldest fossiliferous amber found in the rock record. An integrated study of palynomorphs and macro-remains related to the conifer families of the fossil resin bearing level brings together the floral components from this section. This observed mixture of different taxa of extinct and modern conifer families underlines firmly the effects of the LIP-induced CPE on the evolution and radiation of conifers.

The Aghdarband Basin in the Kopeh-Dagh Range (NE Iran) is one of the most important areas for unraveling the evolution of the Turan plate (southern margin of Eurasia) during the last phase of the closure of the Paleotethys and to reconstruct the history of the Cimmerian blocks just before their collision with Eurasia during the early Late Triassic. The youngest sediments affected by the Early Cimmerian orogeny are those of the Upper Triassic Miankuhi Formation, which covers unconformably the Upper Triassic (lower Carnian) marine beds of the Sina Formation by an interval of continental facies including local conglomerates, cross-bedded sandstones, mudstone layers, silty shales, an up to one-meter thick coal layer with plant remains, and shales. The plant assemblages represent a relatively wide variety of different forms (sphenophytes, ginkgophytes, conifers, and incertis sedis), documenting wetlands with lush vegetation typical of warm and humid environments. In this study, we describe a plant fossil assemblage from the base of the Miankuhi Fm., dominated by roots and vegetative organs of Neocalamites iranensis n. sp., with few plant fossils of uncertain botanical affinity. Palynological investigations of the basal part of the Miankuhi Formation confirm a latest early Carnian to late Carnian age for this interval and reveal, for the first time, a clear link between this plant-bearing bed, and a time of global environmental changes, the Carnian Pluvial Episode. This is the first report of the Carnian Pluvial Episode in the Turan plate (southern margin of Eurasia) and Iran.

The partial skeleton of a small tetrapod, collected from the lower Buchenstein Formation (uppermost Illyrian, Anisian Middle Triassic) of Piz da Peres (Northern Dolomites, Italy) is described. Incomplete ossification of some bones indicate that the specimen is a juvenile. Its absolute size and proportions, along with several skeletal structures show striking similarities with a juvenile specimen of Eusaurosphargis dalsassoi from the slightly younger Prosanto Formation (Switzerland), a taxon known also from the Anisian/Ladinian Besano Formation (Italy and Switzerland). The finding may suggest that during the middle-late Anisian the basins of the Northern Dolomites, of the Besano Formation and Prosanto Formation shared not only several taxa of fishes but also the emerged lands nearby had a similar reptilian fauna.

Sabemos que a flexibilidade é um componente importante da aptidão física básica relacionada à saúde e a qualidade de vida. Quase invariavelmente utilizamos os diferentes tipos de alongamento (ativo, passivo, balístico) para alcançar a melhora desta capacidade física. Outra forma de exercício que traz o adjetivo de promoção da flexibilidade é o exercício resistido, que graças a fase excêntrica do movimento permite o alongamento das células dos músculos agonistas. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi analisar e comparar os efeitos de 8 semanas do alongamento ativo tradicional e o exercício stiff deadlift, sobre o comportamento da flexibilidade da região lombar e do quadril (FLQ). Para tanto, fizeram parte deste estudo 16 indivíduos de ambos os sexos, divididos em dois grupos: G1= Alongamento Ativo (AA: mulheres, n=5 e homens, n=3) e G2= Stiff Deadlift (SD: mulheres, n=5 e homens, n=3). Todos os participantes foram submetidos a avaliações pré e pós aplicação dos protocolos, que consistiram 4 séries de 30 segundos (na realização do AA ou na execução do exercício SD). Em ambos os protocolos foram utilizados 60 segundos de intervalo entre as séries, sendo realizados duas vezes por semana, durante 8 semanas. Philosophers, sociologists and political scientists may analyse political crises by looking at the relationship between the liberal and democratic pillars of liberal-democratic regimes. Social questioning of representation (abstention, apathy and protest) is a democratic response to the failure of the liberal pillar to democratise access to political power, therefore, the crisis of liberalism. M. K. Gandhi developed an alternative theory based on intercultural perspectives and on local, ethical communities. Through Boaventura de Sousa Santos’ “epistemologies of the South”, this article analyses how Gandhi’s work can be mobilised to foster democratisation theory. The study contends that to overcome the crises, democratisation of the liberal pillar is both paramount and achievable with a new interplay of the state and civil society.

The Julian Alps (western Slovenia) structurally belong to the eastern Southern Alps. The Upper Triassic succession mostly consists of shallow water platform carbonates of the Dolomia Principale-Dachstein Limestone system and a deep water succession of the Slovenian Basin outcropping in the southern foothills of the Julian Alps. In addition to the Slovenian Basin, a few other intraplatform basins were present, but they remain poorly researched and virtually ignored in the existing paleogeographic reconstructions of the eastern Southern Alps. Herein, we describe a deepening-upward succession from the Tamar Valley (north-western Slovenia), belonging to the Upper Triassic Tarvisio Basin. The lower, Julian-Tuvalian part of the section comprises peritidal to shallow subtidal carbonates (Conzen Dolomite and Portella Dolomite), and an intermediate carbonate-siliciclastic unit, reflecting increased terrigenous input and storm-influenced deposition (Julian-lowermost Tuvalian shallow-water marlstone and marly limestone of the Tor Formation). Above the drowning unconformity at the top of the Portella Dolomite, Tuvalian well-bedded dolomite with claystone intercalations follows (Carnitza Formation). The latter gradually passes into the uppermost Tuvalian–lowermost Rhaetian bedded dolomite with chert and slump breccias, deposited on a slope and/or at the toe-of-slope (Bača Dolomite). Finally, basinal thin-bedded bituminous limestone and marlstone of Rhaetian age follow (Frauenkogel Formation). The upper part of the Frauenkogel Formation contains meter-scale platform-derived limestone blocks, which are signs of platform progradation. The Tarvisio Basin may have extended as far as the present Santo Stefano di Cadore area, representing a notable paleogeographic unit at the western Neotethys margin.

Political parties are privileged phenomena from which to analyse and understand political power dynamics; this article focuses on a specific type: party-movements. These are considered to be particularly interesting because they have emerged from civil society, carry innovative political ideas based on participation and entail new forms of sharing political power. Looking very closely at the power dynamics within party-movements, this empirical research (based on two cases of ethnographic fieldwork conducted in India and Italy) comparatively investigates the power dynamics between local and national centres of power within the participatory approaches of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S). The comparison takes place between two similar political phenomena of two culturally and geographically different political systems and provides further evidence in relation to representative democracy. In both cases, party-movements infuse a new enthusiasm into politics with the promise to redistribute power at the local level through participation. However, in order to compete with the power of other political parties within the electoral arena, party-movements need to be united political entities and de facto they relegate political participation under the primacy of party centralism. This resultantly has an impact at the local and national levels. Furthermore, the comparison of party-movements pertaining to diverse political landscapes emphasises the transcultural tendency of the power dynamics in representative systems in which participation is subdued to centralisation.

This paper inquiries into the concept of populism from a sociological perspective. This is done by highlighting the unstable co-presence of demagogy and participation through an intercultural analysis of the European and the Indian discursive approach and its construction of popular politics. The underlying understanding is that the concept is misrepresented by the equation of populisms with demagogy. The paper therefore builds on “participatory populism” to promote the expansion, rather than contraction, of the term’s ambiguity. The analysis accounts for the emergence of populisms as subaltern politics that are unable to subvert the political status quo but are able to enhance it morally. The study starts by problematizing the concept’s historical double movement that is at the basis of its demagogic and participatory features, then it focuses on populism as a signifier reinforced by the impasse between the two pillars of liberal democracy. Furthermore, by critically building on Laclau’s position, its social discursive formation is investigated. Chatterjee’s “political society” and the party-movements (the Aam Aadmi Party and the Movimento 5 Stelle) are two contradictory cases that are proposed to exercise an expansion of the concept.

The effect of swimming training (ST) on vagal and sympathetic cardiac effects was investigated in sedentary (S, N = 12) and trained (T, N = 12) male Wistar rats (200-220 g). ST consisted of 60-min swimming sessions 5 days/week for 8 weeks, with a 5% body weight load attached to the tail. The effect of the autonomic nervous system in generating training-induced resting bradycardia (RB) was examined indirectly after cardiac muscarinic and adrenergic receptor blockade. Cardiac hypertrophy was evaluated by cardiac weight and myocyte morphometry. Plasma catecholamine concentrations and citrate synthase activity in soleus muscle were also determined in both groups. Resting heart rate was significantly reduced in T rats (355 ± 16 vs 330 ± 20 bpm). RB was associated with a significantly increased cardiac vagal effect in T rats (103 ± 25 vs 158 ± 40 bpm), since the sympathetic cardiac effect and intrinsic heart rate were similar for the two groups. Likewise, no significant difference was observed for plasma catecholamine concentrations between S and T rats. In T rats, left ventricle weight (13%) and myocyte dimension (21%) were significantly increased, suggesting cardiac hypertrophy. Skeletal muscle citrate synthase activity was significantly increased by 52% in T rats, indicating endurance conditioning. These data suggest that RB induced by ST is mainly mediated parasympathetically and differs from other training modes, like running, that seems to mainly decrease intrinsic heart rate in rats. The increased cardiac vagal activity associated with ST is of clinical relevance, since both are related to increased life expectancy and prevention of cardiac events.

The interdisciplinary study of two deep cores drilled in Pleistocene basin fill at Northern margin of Po Plain, has been integrated with qualitative and quantitative malacological analysis. The potential of quantitative malacological analysis, to refine results obtained from interdisciplinary studies, is here highlighted. The evolution of malacological assemblages has been recorded and correlated to the general regressive trend recognized all over the Po Basin. Lower Pleistocene marine deposits, found at core base (Jaramillo Subchron and older), were gradually replaced by transitional and continental deposits since latest early Pleistocene. Area was eventually covered by continental conglomerate deposits (“Ceppo” facies) during middle-late Pleistocene. Within this general trend, regional significance of a major unconformity (“r” surface), related to onset of Pleistocene glacial cycle, is confirmed. However, as evidenced by malacology, the roughly synchronous onset of coarse clastic progradation did not result in a synchronous shift from marine to transitional and continental settings all over the study area, as an effect of inherited topography and other local factors. During marine sedimentation, fossil record allowed us to recognize a transgressive event, reliably correlated to Marine Isotope Stage 35.

The ammonoid fauna of the Prati di Stuores/Stuores Wiesen section (Dolomites, north-eastern Italy) was studied in detail. This section was proposed as stratotype for the Carnian GSSP, with the first appearance of Daxatina cf. canadensis as primary marker, based on preliminary data. The validity of this proposal is confirmed by the present study, which integrates collections from the Prati di Stuores/Stuores Wiesen section and from others, particularly Bec de Roces (Passo Campolongo) and Antersass (Badia Valley). Ammonoids collected in these localities belong to three biostratigraphic units: regoledanus, canadensis and aon subzones. These subzones constitute, in the Southern Alps, the Ladinian/Carnian boundary interval. Regoledanus Subzone: the north American species Zestoceras enode is most probably documented in this biostratigraphic interval. Canadensis Subzone: the base is marked by the first appearance of Daxatina canadensis, and at least, another north American species, Daxatina laubei, seems to be present. Two species of Zestoceras were found: Z. barwicki e Z. lorigae sp.n. Two species of Trachyceras, distinct from T. aon, are represented in the canadensis Subzone: T. muensteri and T. bipunctatum. These species predate the first appearance of Trachyceras, justifying the canadensis Subzone to be included in the Carnian also on the basis of nomenclatural stability. Other significant taxa of this subzone are Rossiceras? armatum and Sirenotrachyceras thusneldae. Aon Subzone: the ammonoid fauna of this subzone is extensively treated in existing literature and thus not further discussed. Taxonomical notes and stratigraphic consequences: the new subfamily Anolcitinae (family Trachyceratidae) is erected. At present, Frankites regoledanus, F. apertus and F. sp. A have been recognized in the Southern Alps. The lectotype of Ammonites (Trachyceras ?) Regoledanus was defined. The latter species is exclusive of the regoledanus Subzone, whereas the distribution of the two other species encompasses the defined GSSP. The shell morphology of F. apertus and the north American species F. sutherlandi is identical. The suture line is also comparable, hence the two species are considered synonyms. This synonymy is relevant for long-distance correlations. The lectotypes of Trachyceras ruturanum and T. laricum were also defined.

Several dinosaur footprints were discovered on three different levels cropping out in the CO.L.MAR quarry, south of the village of Borgo Celano in the Gargano Promontory (Apulia, southern Italy). The track-bearing levels belong to a carbonate inner platform succession referred to the Lower Cretaceous (upper Hauterivian-lower Barremian). This paper describes only the lowest dinoturbated bed, where footprints are preserved as natural cast. Forty footprints, mostly tridactyl, have been attributed to medium-sized theropods. Tridactyl tracks are similar to Kayentapus Welles, 1971 regarding ichnotaxonomy. Round shaped footprints, previously not described from this site, are found in association with tridactyl footprints and are related to ornitischian dinosaurs.

A refined ammonoid biostratigraphy is reported for a critical interrval of the Bagolino section (Giudicarie Area, Northern Iraly), a candidate for the Anisian/Ladinian stage boundary. The Avisianum Subzone has been documented, and its boundary with the Crassus Subzone has been redefined, on the basis of new findings of Reitziites reitzi, Aplococeras aff. smithi, Aplococeras avisianum, Halilucites rusticus, Parasturia sp. and other significant ammonoids. Six potential criteria for the definition of the Anisian/Ladinian boundary can now be considered in this single stratigraphic section, so that the FO of Eoprotrachyceras curionii is no longer the unescapable choice at Bagolino. Despite several drawbacks, including the absence of palynomorphs and daonellid bivalves, the thermal history preventing the recovery of magnetic and isotopic signals, and a lower sedimentation rate with respect to many other sections of the Southern Alps, the Bagolino section is here accepted as stratotype for the Anisian/Ladinian boundary, but further paleontological and sedimentological studies should be considered.

The Prati di Stuores/Stuores Wiesen section (Dolomites, Italy) is proposed as a candidate Global Stratotype Section and Point for the base of the Carnian Stage. In addition to being a famous, richly fossiliferous locality, it includes the type-section of the Cordevolian substage. The section is located near Pralongià, along the southern slope of the crest separating the Badia/Abtei and Cordevole valleys. Below the levels with Trachyceras aon, the section contains a rich ammonoid fauna that chacterizes the lower part of the Regoledanus Subzone and subsequently records the first appearances of the mid-high latitude genus Daxatina (Daxatina sp., D. cf. canadensis) and of traditional Trachyceras with species different from T. aon. Moreover, the Daxatina cf. canadensis Subzone is recognised above the Regoledanus Subzone. Very rare conodonts of the Budurovignatus group and species of Gladigondolella from the diebeli Assemblage Zone occur. Gondolella polygnatyformis, already known from the Aon Subzone, is absent. Palynomorphs, foraminifers, gastropods, bivalves, brachiopods, microcrinoids and holothurian sclerites were studied. Variations in frequency and taxonomic diversity of these faunas suggest anaerobic-disaerobic bottom conditions for the lower-middle part of the section (0-105 m), followed by a more stable oxygen content in the upper portion. Magnetostratigraphy showed four intervals with normal polarity and three intervals with reversed polarity. The Daxatina cf. canadensis Subzone falls close to the normal polarity interval S2n. The present study proposes the FAD of the cosmopolitan genus Daxatina as a marker of the base of the Carnian Stage, placing it at a lower stratigraphic level than previously indicated in the Stuores area. The Prati di Stuores section is proposed as GSSP of the Ladinian-Carnian boundary.

Amber in Triassic deposits in the Dolomites is demonstrated for the first time. The amber-bearing deposits belong to the middle part of the Dürrenstein Formation, referred to uppermost Julian (Lower Carnian, about 225 My). Chemico-physical features of amber, which occurs as small yellow to reddish droplets, have been determined. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy shows typical bands of fossil resins; the "fingerprint" region of the spectrum presents a unique pattern that cannot be referred to any other known fossil resin. Palynological investigation of amber-bearing layers shows a large prevalence of bisaccates and circumpolles. Particularly, the taeniate bisaccates are frequent (41%) and suggest a correlation with the amber-producing species. Amber production and preservation is possibly related to a humid climatic event.

The relative risk to developing chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes mellitus, obesity and certain types of cancer, increases with age. Thus, aging associated with a poorly active lifestyle is considered one of the primary risk factors for the development and progression of most chronic degenerative diseases, while regular exercise has substantially changed this scenario. Exercise acts favorably on blood glucose and blood pressure, but few studies have been concerned to compare the effect of different exercise modalities on these physiological variables. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to analyze the acute effect of exercise on post-exercise hypotension (PEH) and blood glucose in the elderly. Thirty elderly (67 ± 5.2 years) of both genres were selected andseparated according to the exercise modality practiced: AE, aquatic exercise (N = 6); RT, resistance training (N = 6); F, functional/ weight bearing training (N = 6); P, Pilates (N = 6); C, sedentary/ control (N = 6). Blood pressure and blood glucose were recorded 15 minutes before the beginning and 30 minutes after the end of the training session.Thus, it was found that the RT (systolic PEH and blood glucose) and the AE (diastolic PEH) were able to promote the most significant reductions when compared to other modalities, thus being preferentially recommended for the elderly population with characteristics close to the sample used in this research. During Middle-early Late Triassic (∼243–235?Ma) a diffuse igneous activity developed in the Southern Alps (Italy). Sparse lava flow and pyroclastic succession remnants of such Southern Alps Triassic Igneous Rocks (SATIR) crop out in the Brescian Prealps, the Vicentinian Alps (Recoaro-Schio-Posina), Non Valley, Dolomites and Julian Alps. Plutonic rocks are found in two main plutonic complexes (Monzoni and Predazzo) and a small stock (Cima di Pape). Coeval igneous products can be traced eastward to Austria and Dinarides, for a total length of ∼450?km. The coeval formation of major late Anisian-late Ladinian carbonate platforms in the subsiding eastern Dolomites, and significant uplift and subaerial erosion in the western Dolomites suggest, for these areas, the occurrence of large-scale strike-slip and extensional tectonics with the development of horst-and-graben structures. This study reports the first complete review of the SATIR activity, including new mineral chemical data on 14 samples, 61 major and trace element whole rock analyses and 7 Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic ratios for volcanic and plutonic samples from Dolomites (lavas plus Monzoni and Predazzo plutonic rocks) and Vicentinian Alps lavas. Despite the variable post-magmatic modifications, the large areal distribution of the products and their wide spectrum of chemical compositions, these samples show rather common geochemical and mineralogical characteristics and define major and trace element trends that can be associated with nearly close-system magmatic evolution. Minor upper crustal contaminations can be observed in specific cases, mostly in the most differentiated products (SiO 2 >70?wt%). A specific characteristic of SATIR is their calcalkaline to shoshonitic affinity, resembling the derivation from subduction-modified mantle sources, a feature at odds with the coeval strike-slip and extensional tectonics. Geochemical modelling, petrological considerations and geological constraints allow us to propose a model in which the SATIR mantle sources reflect previous subduction metasomatism (likely occurred during Variscan times). These metasomatised mantle sources were reactivated ∼90–100 Myr after the end of the subduction, when continental rifting caused a raise of the geotherms and passive upwelling of asthenospheric mantle. Resumo O suicídio é a última das causas externas de morte (CE) (que incluem homicídios e acidentes) a apresentar concentração de casos (80%) em países de baixa e média renda. Há literatura consolidada identificando a violência estrutural como determinante para as CE, mas pouca quanto ao suicídio. O objetivo deste artigo é definir novo marco teórico para o estudo do suicídio como fenômeno social, onde a interação social reflete as marcas do colonialismo. Foram analisados os dados sobre mortalidade do Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), Seattle, Washington, e realizada revisão sistemática da literatura sobre suicídio, violência estrutural, colonialismo, democracia e desenvolvimento, entre 1968 a 2018, seguindo a metodologia Prisma. Centrada na teoria crítica, adotou-se a determinação social como categoria básica para a identificação dos reflexos do colonialismo nos determinantes que caracterizam o perfil epidemiológico do suicídio, tornando possível seu enquadramento como uma “patologia do poder”. Dos dados estatísticos e da revisão sistemática, foram identificados os grupos de risco para o suicídio - os mais afetados pela assimetria de poder, oriunda do colonialismo - mesmo em países de alta renda.

We aimed to compare electromyographic activity of the external portion of the pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi and triceps brachii long head in an acute resistance training session between bench press (BP), lat pull down, pullover and triceps lying exercises. Concentric and eccentric phases electromyographic activity were compared. pectoralis major showed significantly higher activity in bench press (67.9 %) than in pullover (50.8 %), triceps lying (35.9 %) and lat pull down (14.1 %) in the concentric and eccentric phase (43.4 %, 27.5 %, 24.5 % and 7%, respectively). Latissimus dorsi showed significantly higher activity in lat pull down (59.5 %) than in pullover (22.7 %), triceps lying (10.7 %) and bench press (6.6 %) in the concentric and eccentric phase (37.4 %, 8.4 %, 7.6 % and 4.4 %, respectively). Triceps brachii long head showed significantly higher activity in triceps lying (67.7 %) than in bench press (49.2 %), pullover (34.3 %) and lat pull down (12.4 %) in the concentric and eccentric phase (37.6 %, 23.8 %, 20.5 % and 9.7 %, respectively). We found that bench press, lat pull down and triceps lying exercises are more effective to activate pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi and brachii long head muscles, respectively. Pullover exercise is more effective to activate pectoralis major (50.8 %) rather that latissimus dorsi (22.7 %).
