Abstract

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. 3. Investigating thermalization of a strongly interacting non-Abelian plasma

Abstract

Using gauge/gravity duality methods, we study the relaxation towards equilibrium of strongly interacting non-Abelian matter. We adopt boundary sourcing to drive the system out-of-equilibrium, and analyze the equilibration process through local probes (energy density and pressures) and nonlocal probes (lengths of the geodesics between two boundary points and extremal surfaces having a Wilson loop as contour on the boundary). We also investigate the real-time dissociation of the heavy quarkonium in the out-of-equilibrium plasma. Systematic comparison with the results of a geometry dual to viscous hydrodynamics sheds light on the thermalization process., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

The real-time dissociation of the heavy quarkonium in a strongly coupled boost-invariant non-Abelian plasma relaxing towards equilibrium is analyzed in a holographic framework. The effects driving the plasma out of equilibrium are described by boundary quenching, impulsive variations of the boundary metric. Quarkonium is represented by a classical string with endpoints kept close to the boundary. The evolution of the string profile is computed in the time-dependent geometry, and the dissociation time is evaluated for different configurations with respect to the direction of the plasma expansion. Abstract

We study the (1S) radiative decays to γπ+π- and γK+K- using data recorded with the BABAR detector operating at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at center-of-mass energies at the (2S) and (3S) resonances. The (1S) resonance is reconstructed from the decay (nS)→π+π-(1S), n=2, 3. Branching fraction measurements and spin-parity analyses of (1S) radiative decays are reported for the I=0 S-wave and f2(1270) resonances in the π+π- mass spectrum, the f2′(1525) and f0(1500) in the K+K- mass spectrum, and the f0(1710) in both.

Abstract

We study the (1S) radiative decays to γπ+π- and γK+K- using data recorded with the BABAR detector operating at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at center-of-mass energies at the (2S) and (3S) resonances. The (1S) resonance is reconstructed from the decay (nS)→π+π-(1S), n=2, 3. Branching fraction measurements and spin-parity analyses of (1S) radiative decays are reported for the I=0 S-wave and f2(1270) resonances in the π+π- mass spectrum, the f2′(1525) and f0(1500) in the K+K- mass spectrum, and the f0(1710) in both.

Abstract

The ranibizumab (RBZ) port delivery system (PDS) is a device designed to continuously deliver RBZ in the vitreous chamber for the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). It is implanted during a surgical procedure and can provide sustained release of the medication for several months. This review, updated to January 2024, focuses on past clinical studies as well as current and forthcoming trials looking into a PDS with RBZ. In the phase 2 LADDER trial, the mean time to first refill of a PDS with RBZ 100 mg/mL was 15.8 months, with the pharmacokinetic (PK) profile showing a sustained concentration of RBZ in the blood and aqueous humor. More recently, a PDS with RBZ (100 mg/mL) refilled every 24 weeks was shown to be non-inferior to a monthly intravitreal injection (IVI) with RBZ (0.5 mg) over 40 and 92 weeks in the phase 3 ARCHWAY trial. The refill every 24 weeks allowed for a RBZ vitreous exposure within the concentration range of monthly intravitreal injections (IVIs), and the expected half-life (106 days) was comparable with the in vitro results. Nonetheless, vitreous hemorrhage and endophthalmitis were more common side effects in PDS patients. In conclusion, a PDS continuously delivering RBZ has a clinical effectiveness level comparable with IVI treatment. However, a greater frequency of unfavorable occurrences highlights the need for procedure optimization for a wider adoption. Ongoing trials and possible future approaches need to be addressed.

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of our study was to evaluate changes in the retinal and choriocapillaris circulations in patients with hypothalamic amenorrhea. Methods: Prospective, cross-sectional observational study on 25 patients (50 eyes) diagnosed with hypothalamic amenorrhea and 25 age-matched healthy women. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) was used to evaluate the vessel density (VD) of superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), and choriocapillaris VD layers in whole 6.4 × 6.4-mm image and in fovea grid-based image. In patients’ group, systemic parameters were collected: body mass index (BMI), endometrial rhyme thickness, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin, insulin, and cortisol. Results: SCP and DCP did not show any statistical difference when comparing patients and controls (all p > 0.05). Differently, choriocapillaris VD in the whole region showed a non-significant tendency toward higher values in the patients group in both eyes (p = 0.038 for right eye [RE], p = 0.044 for left eye [LE]). Foveal choriocapillaris VD was higher in hypothalamic amenorrhea women vs. healthy controls (66.0 ± 2.4 vs. 63.7 ± 6.6%, p = 0.136 for RE; 65.0 ± 2.4 vs. 61.6 ± 7.0%, p = 0.005 for LE). Focusing on correlation with systemic parameters, SCP and DCP foveal density had a medium/high effect size with endometrial rhyme, along with DCP in the fovea area vs. cortisol and SCP in the whole area vs. FSH. Conclusion: When comparing hypothalamic amenorrhea patients to healthy subjects, OCTA detected changes in the choriocapillaris layer, showing increased VD in the early stage of the systemic pathology, suggesting that microvascular “compaction” could be a first phase of hypoestrogenism adaptation.

Abstract

PurposeElectric weapons have dangers associated with their use, such as burns and trauma related with the impacts of uncontrolled falls, even though they often minimize morbidity and mortality. The exact visual outcome of the damage inflicted is unknown, even though numerous studies have been documented in the literature about the ocular damage induced by the use of these tools.MethodsWe present a narrative review of types of eye damage associated with the use of the Taser. The following search terms were used to identify eligible articles through the PubMed database: "TASER", "Conducted Electric Weapons", "CEWs".ResultsA total of 15 articles were included with information about 38 patients with eye damage associated with the use of taser. The majority of patients were males. In most cases the mechanism of injury was the penetration of the probe inside the eye. Clinical manifestations of ocular damage were present in only 18 out of 38 cases and varied according to the type of damage mechanism. Indeed, the cases in which the probe had penetrated the eye showed more severe clinical manifestations with a poor visual outcome.ConclusionIn conclusion, the introduction of taser use for law enforcement requires serious consideration and adequate training for officers.

The spectrum of the glueball with $J^{PC}=0^{--}$ is computed using different bottom-up holographic models of QCD. The results indicate a lowest-lying state lighter than in the determination by other methods, with mass $m \simeq 2.8$ GeV. Abstract

Using a holographic method, we further investigate the relaxation towards the hydrodynamic regime of a boost-invariant non-Abelian plasma taken out-of-equilibrium. In the dual description, the system is driven out-of-equilibrium by boundary sourcing, a deformation of the boundary metric, as proposed by Chesler and Yaffe. The effects of several deformation profiles on the bulk geometry are investigated by the analysis of the corresponding solutions of the Einstein equations. The time of restoration of the hydrodynamic regime is investigated: setting the effective temperature of the system at the end of the boundary quenching to $T_{eff}(\tau^*)=500$ MeV, the hydrodynamic regime is reached after a lapse of time of ${\cal O}$(1 fm/c)., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures. Abstract

All the available experimental information on open charm and beauty mesons is used to classify the observed states in heavy quark doublets. The masses of some of the still unobserved states are predicted, in particular in the beauty sector. Adopting an effective Lagrangian approach based on the heavy quark and chiral symmetry, individual decay rates and ratios of branching fractions are computed, with results useful to assign the quantum numbers to recently observed charmed states which still need to be properly classified. Implications and predictions for the corresponding beauty mesons are provided. Abstract

We consider the vertex function of two vector and one axial-vector currents using the soft-wall holographic model of QCD with the Chern-Simons term. Two structure functions $w_L$ and $w_T$ describe such a vertex in the special case in which one of the two vector currents corresponds to an on-shell soft photon. We briefly review the QCD results for these functions, obtained from triangular loop diagrams with quarks having mass $m_q=0$ or $m_q \neq 0$, we compute $w_L$ and $w_T$ in the soft-wall model and compare the outcome to the QCD findings. Abstract

We study scalar glueballs and scalar mesons at $T \neq 0$ in the soft wall holographic QCD model. We find that, using the Anti-de Sitter-Black Hole metric for all values of the temperature, the masses of the hadronic states decrease and the widths become broader when T increases, and there are temperatures for which the states disappear from the scalar glueball and scalar meson spectral functions. However, the values of the temperatures in correspondence of which such phenomena occur are low, of the order of 40-60 MeV. Abstract

We study the phase diagram of a generalized Winfree model. The modification is such that the coupling depends on the fraction of synchronized oscillators, a situation which has been noted in some experiments on coupled Josephson junctions and mechanical systems. We let the global coupling k be a function of the Kuramoto order parameter r through an exponent z such that z=1 corresponds to the standard Winfree model, z<1 strengthens the coupling at low r (low amount of synchronization) and, at z>1, the coupling is weakened for low r. Using both analytical and numerical approaches, we find that z controls the size of the incoherent phase region, and one may make the incoherent behavior less typical by choosing z<1. We also find that the original Winfree model is a rather special case, indeed the partial locked behavior disappears for z>1. At fixed k and varying gamma, the stability boundary of the locked phase corresponds to a transition that is continuous for z<1 and first-order for z>1. Abstract

We study light scalar mesons in the AdS/QCD soft-wall model with a background dilaton field. The masses and decay constants are compatible with experiment and QCD determinations if $a_0(980)$ and $f_0(980)$ are identified as the lightest scalar mesons; moreover, the states are organized in linear Regge trajectories with the same slope of vector mesons. Comparing the two-point correlation function of scalar operators in AdS and QCD, information about the condensates can be derived. Abstract

AdS/QCD correspondence predicts the structure of quark-antiquark potential in the static limit. We use this piece of information together with the Salpeter equation (Schr\"odinger equation with relativistic kinematics) and a short range hyperfine splitting potential to determine quark masses and the quark potential parameters from the meson spectrum. The agreement between theory and experimental data is satisfactory provided one considers only mesons comprising at least one heavy quark. We use the same potential (in the one-gluon-exchange approximation) and these data to estimate constituent diquark masses. Using these results as an input we compute tetraquark masses using a diquark-antidiquark model. The masses of the states X(3872) or Y(3940) are predicted rather accurately. We also compute tetraquark masses with open charm and strangeness. Our result is that tetraquark candidates such as D_s(2317), D_s(2457) or X(2632) can hardly be interpreted as diquark-antidiquark states within the present approach., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Purpose: The aim this study is to determine anterior chamber parameters variations induced by PreserFlo MicroShunt implantation, in the early post-operative days. Methods: This is a prospective observational study on 48 eyes undergoing PreserFlo MicroShunt implantation alone (n = 30) or combined with phacoemulsification (n = 18). Anterior chamber depth (ACD) and volume (ACV), central corneal thickness (CCT) and total corneal astigmatism (TCA) were evaluated pre-operatively, post-operatively at day-1 and at 1 week with the Pentacam tomography. Results: Intraocular pressure decreased significantly from 20.9 ± 4.0 to 8.0 ± 2.8 mmHg (p < 0.0001) and to 10.8 ± 3.7 mmHg (p = 0.0001) at day-1 and week-1, respectively. TCA varied significantly from baseline (1.5 ± 1.2 D) to both day 1 follow up (2.7 ± 1.9 D, p = 0.0003) and week 1 follow up (2.2 ± 1.6 D, p = 0.02). Nevertheless, only K1 showed a transient flattening at day 1, while K2 value didn’t show any statistical variation in the early post-operative period. CCT value rose significantly at day 1 (547 ± 49 vs. 529 ± 32 µm at baseline, p = 0.04), but then returned toward pre-operative values at week 1 (537 ± 39 µm, p = 0.57). In contrast, ACD values changed insignificantly from 3.3 ± 0.9 to 3.7 ± 1.0 mm at day 1 (p = 0.21), and then stabilized at 3.4 ± 0.9 mm (p = 0.82) at week 1 follow up. ACV changed from 150.0 ± 36.2 to 159.5 ± 42.1 mm3 at day 1 (p = 0.58), and successively to 153.9 ± 37.9 mm3 at week 1 follow up (p = 0.96). The subgroup analysis in eyes undergoing standalone PreserFlo implantation didn’t show significant changes in both ACD and ACV. Conclusion: PreserFlo implantation minimizes the anterior chamber modifications generated by traditional filtering surgery, inducing low and transient corneal and biometric changes only in the very early postoperative period and insignificant changes to ACD and ACV, label of its safety and minimal invasiveness.

Abstract

Purpose: To describe a case of cilio-choroidal melanoma presenting as aseptic orbital cellulitis with massive conjunctival chemosis. Methods: Case report. Results: A 51-year-old man with a left retro-iris pigmented lesion had acute lid edema, conjunctival chemosis, and extensive hyphema. Ultrasound revealed a large, lobulated, wide-base choroidal-starting lesion affecting the ciliary bodies and vitreous chamber. MRI revealed low-intermediate T2-signal and intermediate-high T1-signal, with substantial post-contrastographic enhancement. After one week of systemic corticosteroids, the chemosis reduced significantly, and the patient was referred for enucleation, even without histologic confirmation. Post-surgical histopathology found 90% necrotic tissue, few viable cells, and no scleral or vascular invasion, with genetic analysis showing monosomy of chromosome 3 and 8q gain. Conclusion: Choroidal melanoma, particularly if necrotic, may occasionally present as aseptic orbital cellulitis, even without extraocular spread.

Abstract

Background: To discuss the efficacy of an inferior implant of XEN 63 gel stent in a patient with refractory glaucoma after trabeculectomy failure and vitreoretinal surgery with silicone oil tamponade. Case Description: We report the case of a 73-year-old man with a history of refractory open glaucoma with trabeculectomy failure. He experienced recurrent retinal detachments with silicone oil tamponade, with uncontrolled intra-ocular pressure (IOP) after silicone oil removal. Due to the presence of oil emulsion in the anterior chamber, the chosen location for XEN 63 implantation was the infero-temporal quadrant. Mild hyphema and vitreous hemorrhage were seen post-operatively, but were self-limiting. At week 1, the intraocular pressure was 8 mmHg with a well-formed bleb seen in anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). At 6 month follow up, the patient maintained a IOP of 12 mmHg without topical hypotensive drugs. Slit lamp examination revealed a widespread, developed bleb with no signs of inflammation. Conclusion: In this case of refractory glaucoma in a vitrectomized eye with previous oil tamponade, the inferior placement of the XEN 63 gel stent delivered an adequate intraocular pressure even at 6-months follow up, with a diffuse functional infero-nasal bleb seen with AS-OCT.

Abstract

Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder, causing Gb-3 (globotriaosylceramide) buildup in cellular lysosomes throughout the body, in particular in blood vessel walls, neuronal cells, and smooth muscle. The gradual accumulation of this glycosphingolipid in numerous eye tissues causes conjunctival vascular abnormalities, corneal epithelial opacities (cornea verticillata), lens opacities, and retinal vascular abnormalities. Although a severe vision impairment is rare, these abnormalities are diagnostic indicators and prognostics for severity. Cornea verticillata is the most common ophthalmic feature in both hemizygous men and heterozygous females. Vessel tortuosity has been linked to a faster disease progression and may be useful in predicting systemic involvement. New technologies such as optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) are useful for monitoring retinal microvasculature alterations in FD patients. Along with OCTA, corneal topographic analysis, confocal microscopy, and electro-functional examinations, contributed to the recognition of ocular abnormalities and have been correlated with systemic involvement. We offer an update regarding FD ocular manifestations, focusing on findings derived from the most recent imaging modalities, to optimize the management of this pathology.

24. 3D Da Vinci robotic surgery: is it a risk to the surgeon’s eye health?

Abstract

Da Vinci three-dimensional (3D) system has been increasingly used in customary surgical settings, gaining fundamental relevance for abdominal, urological, and gynecological laparoscopic surgery. The aim of this research is to evaluate the degree of discomfort and potential changes in the binocular vision and ocular motility of surgical operators, who employ 3D vision systems during Da Vinci robotic surgery. Twenty-four surgeons were enrolled in the study, including twelve who typically use the 3D Da Vinci system and twelve who routinely employ 2D system. Routine general ophthalmological and orthoptic examinations were conducted at baseline (T0), the day before surgery, and 30 min after the 3D or 2D surgery (T1). In addition, surgeons were interviewed using a questionnaire of 18 symptoms, with each item containing three questions regarding the frequency, severity, and bothersomeness of the symptoms, in order to evaluate the degree of discomfort. Mean age at evaluation was 45.28 ± 8.71 years (range 33–63 years). Cover test, uncover test, and fusional amplitude showed no statistically significant difference. After surgery, no statistical difference was observed in the Da Vinci group on the TNO stereotest (p > 0.9999). However, the difference in the 2D group resulted statistically significant (p = 0.0156). Comparing participants (p 0.0001) and time (T0–T1; p = 0.0137), the difference between the two groups was statistically significant. Surgeons using 2D systems reported more discomfort than those using 3D systems. The absence of short-term consequences following surgery with the Da Vinci 3D system is a promising conclusion, considering the numerous advantages of this technology. Nonetheless, multicenter investigations and more studies are required to verify and interpret our findings.

Abstract

Background: To describe the efficacy and safety of the adjustable system eyeWatch in vitrectomized glacomatous eyes. Methods: Prospective, non-comparative, small case series of 2 patients who underwent glaucoma drainage device implant with the eyeWatch system. Intraocular pressure, number of medications and early and late complications were evaluated. Results: None of the operated eyes developed early or late complications. After 1 week post operatively, the IOP raised at 28 mmHg in the first eye and 25 mmHg in the second one. The eyeWatch Pen was used to open and set the device into position 3 (that means implant half opened) After waiting for 30 min, IOP was 15 mmHg and 11 mmHg, respectively. Thirty days after surgery we set the EyeWatch into position 0 (that means implant full opened) even though the IOP was under control. A new IOP measurement was done and we registered that IOP was 14 mmHg and 10 mmHg respectively, and it remained stable after six months of follow up. Conclusion: In conclusion, in our case series the use of eyeWatch adjustable system allows a safe and gradual regulation of the flow during post-operative management also in vitrectomized eyes. Considering the percentage of hypotony related complications in vitrectomized eyes this system is an effective and safe technique to handle glaucoma in post vitreoretinal surgery eyes.

Abstract

Background: The purpose of this study is to compare the morphology of six-month follow-up blebs created by a subconjunctival glaucoma surgical device (XEN45) to those created by a PreserFlo MicroShunt with a sub-Tenon insertion, utilizing AS-OCT. Methods: A retrospective study of 29 eyes who underwent XEN45 implantation and 29 eyes who underwent PreserFlo MicroShunt implantation. The patients were analyzed at 24 h, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. At each visit, the maturation and morphological alterations of the blebs were observed, as well as connections with the IOP. Results: In both groups, IOP showed significant reduction at all follow ups (p < 0.0001). In XEN group, the most common bleb morphology in the immediate postoperative was the subconjuntival separation type (42%) followed by the uniform type (34%), with a trend inversion at 6 month follow up (51% of uniform type). On the contrary, the most common morphology after PreserFlo was the multiple internal layer (55%), which showed a tendency to reduce over time and was substituted by the microcystic multiform, whose percentage increased over time (17% at day 1 vs. 44% at month 6). Uniform appearance was associated by the posterior episcleral fluid (PEF) lake presence. Both horizontal and vertical diameters significantly increased over time. Conclusion: XEN and PreserFlo implantation resulted in the production of diffuse blebs with different characteristics, which may influence IOP lowering capacity and bleb revisions necessity over time.

Abstract

Initial stages of Best vitelliform macular dystrophy (BVMD) and adult vitelliform macular dystrophy (AVMD) harbor similar blue autofluorescence (BAF) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) features. Nevertheless, BVMD is characterized by a worse final stage visual acuity (VA) and an earlier onset of critical VA loss. Currently, differential diagnosis requires an invasive and time-consuming process including genetic testing, electrooculography (EOG), full field electroretinogram (ERG), and visual field testing. The aim of our study was to automatically classify OCT and BAF images from stage II BVMD and AVMD eyes using a deep learning algorithm and to identify an image processing method to facilitate human-based clinical diagnosis based on non-invasive tests like BAF and OCT without the use of machine-learning technology. After the application of a customized image processing method, OCT images were characterized by a dark appearance of the vitelliform deposit in the case of BVMD and a lighter inhomogeneous appearance in the case of AVMD. By contrast, a customized method for processing of BAF images revealed that BVMD and AVMD were characterized respectively by the presence or absence of a hypo-autofluorescent region of retina encircling the central hyperautofluorescent foveal lesion. The human-based evaluation of both BAF and OCT images showed significantly higher correspondence to ground truth reference when performed on processed images. The deep learning classifiers based on BAF and OCT images showed around 90% accuracy of classification with both processed and unprocessed images, which was significantly higher than human performance on both processed and unprocessed images. The ability to differentiate between the two entities without recurring to invasive and expensive tests may offer a valuable clinical tool in the management of the two diseases.

Abstract

Myopia is becoming more common across the world, affecting approximately two bil-lion people and rising. Different kinds of therapies (optical, pharmaceutical, environmental, or behavioral) have been proposed to decrease myopia progression, but with variable results and a lack of standardization. The evidence that targeted myopic defocus inhibits eye length growth has paved the way for several contact and spectacle lense designs to induce a peripheral defocus, thus slowing myopia progression, but the perfect configuration has yet to be defined. One of the newest and more promising approaches in this field is the use of Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) lenses. These lenses are built from the assumption that targeted myopic defocus, produced by 396 mid-peripheral lenslets with positive power, inhibits eye length growth. Recent studies have highlighted the effectiveness of these lenses compared to children who had worn single vision spectacle lenses, in terms of myopia control and tolerability. Despite the evidence that these lenses can help slow down the progression of myopia, the occasional mid-peripheral aberrations they can induce, as well as the overall eye strain that comes with wearing them, should not be overlooked. The aim of this review is to give attention to the advantages and the shortfalls of this new approach and to evaluate its effectiveness in clinical practice.

Abstract

Purpose: To report the case of a patient who presented with a peripapillary retinal detachment caused by pathological myopia. Observations: A 73-year-old female with a clinical history of high myopia was admitted to our ophthalmic department complaining of vision loss in her right eye. Her best-corrected visual acuity was 20/25 in the right eye and 20/400 in the left eye. The refractive error was −9.00 D in both eyes. The anterior segment and pupillary reflex were normal. Dilated fundus examination revealed myopic retinopathy in both eyes and a yellow peripapillary lesion, distinct from the myopic conus and encircling almost the whole optic disc, in her right eye. The left eye displayed macular atrophy with macular pigmentation due to a previous myopic choroidal neovascularization. Optical coherence tomography showed a localized retinal detachment in the peripapillary area, adjacent to the inferior edge of the optic disc, giving a strange “seagull wings” appearance. Conclusions and Importance: In case of peripapillary neuroepithelial detachment the presence of PDPM in high myopic patients should always be excluded. Further research is due in order to better understand this clinical entity's pathogenesis and prognosis.

Abstract

For moderate-to-severe glaucoma, trabeculectomy remains the “gold standard” intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering treatment; nonetheless, this method requires extensive post-operative maintenance. Microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) treatments are designed to lessen intra-and post-operative care burden while offering an acceptable IOP decrease for individuals with mild to moderate glaucoma. The PreserFlo® MicroShunt (previously InnFocus MicroShunt) is an 8.5 mm glaucoma drainage device manufactured from poly(styrene-block-isobutylene-block-styrene) (SIBS), an extremely biocompatible and bioinert material. The lumen is narrow enough to prevent hypotony, but big enough to avoid being obstructed by sloughed cells or pigment. The device is implanted ab externo, as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with cataract surgery, with intraoperative mitomycin C, and a bleb is produced under the conjunctiva and Tenon’s capsule. The MicroShunt was CE-marked in 2012 and designed for primary open-angle glaucoma, the IOP of which remains uncontrolled after maximally tolerated topical treatment. Several clinical trials evaluating the MicroShunt’s long-term safety and effectiveness have been conducted, highlighting the effectiveness of the device over time, along with a tolerable safety profile. The present review aims to gather evidence of PreserFlo’s effectiveness and safety results almost 10 years after its introduction, and furthermore, to compare it with other MIGS and with the gold-standard trabeculectomy for glaucoma management.

Abstract

Introduction: To report a case of a 57-years-old female patient who presented with prominent bilateral proptosis and swollen disks. Case description: A 57-year-old obese patient admitted to our ophthalmic department complaining of bilateral sense of eye swelling and mild blurring vision. The anterior segment and pupillary reflex were normal on ophthalmological testing. Likewise, eye movements were preserved and she did not report diplopia in any position of gaze. Dilated fundus examination revealed bilateral hemorrhagic papilledema, pre-retinal hemorrhages in both eyes, dot and blot hemorrhages in the peripheral retina. Visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. Routine hematological investigations revealed increased both Von Willebrand factor and ristocetin factor and LAC positivity. The lumbar puncture (LP) showed elevated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with contrast of brain and spinal cord showed signs of intracranial hypertension and the presence of two lesions in continuity with each other respectively located at T12-L1 and L1-L2. Radiologic features were compatible with the diagnosis of ependymoma. A surgical procedure was conducted and confirmed the diagnosis after anatomical pathology analysis. Conclusion: Although rare, bilateral hemorrhagic swollen disks could be an early sign of spinal cord tumors, in particular ependymomas.

Abstract

We study the Υ(1S) radiative decays to γπ+π− and γK+K− using data recorded with the BABAR detector operating at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e− collider at center-of-mass energies at the Υ(2S) and Υ(3S) resonances. The Υ(1S) resonance is reconstructed from the decay Υ(nS)→π+π−Υ(1S), n=2, 3. Branching fraction measurements and spin-parity analyses of Υ(1S) radiative decays are reported for the I=0 S-wave and f2(1270) resonances in the π+π− mass spectrum, the f′2(1525) and f0(1500) in the K+K− mass spectrum, and the f0(1710) in both.

Abstract

We study the $\Upsilon(1S)$ radiative decays to $\gamma \pi^+ \pi^-$ and $\gamma K^+ K^-$ using data recorded with the BaBar detector operating at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider at center-of-mass energies at the $\Upsilon(2S)$ and $\Upsilon(3S)$ resonances. The $\Upsilon(1S)$ resonance is reconstructed from the decay $\Upsilon(nS)\to \pi^+ \pi^- \Upsilon(1S)$, $n=2,3$. Branching fraction measurements and spin-parity analyses of $\Upsilon(1S)$ radiative decays are reported for the I=0 $S$-wave and $f_2(1270)$ resonances in the $\pi^+ \pi^-$ mass spectrum, the $f_2'(1525)$ and $f_0(1500)$ in the $ K^+ K^-$ mass spectrum, and the $f_0(1710)$ in both., Comment: 20 pages, 20 postscript figures

Abstract

We study the ϒ(1S) radiative decays to γπ+π− and γK+K− using data recorded with the BABAR detector operating at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e− collider at center-of-mass energies at the ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) resonances. The ϒ(1S) resonance is reconstructed from the decay ϒ(nS)→π+π−ϒ(1S), n=2, 3. Branching fraction measurements and spin-parity analyses of ϒ(1S) radiative decays are reported for the I=0 S-wave and f2(1270) resonances in the π+π− mass spectrum, the f2′(1525) and f0(1500) in the K+K− mass spectrum, and the f0(1710) in both.

Abstract

We study the ϒ(1S) radiative decays to γπ[superscript +}]π[superscript -] and γK[superscript +]Kp[superscript -] using data recorded with the BABAR detector operating at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy e[superscript +]e[superscript -] collider at center-of-mass energies at the ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) resonances. The ϒ(1S) resonance is reconstructed from the decay ϒ(nS)→π[superscript +]π[superscript -]ϒ(1S), n=2, 3. Branching fraction measurements and spin-parity analyses of ϒ(1S) radiative decays are reported for the I=0 S-wave and f[subscript 2](1270) resonances in the π[superscript +]π[superscript -} mass spectrum, the f[subscript 2][superscript ′](1525) and f[subscript 0](1500) in the K[superscript +]K[superscript -] mass spectrum, and the f[subscript 0](1710) in both., United States. Abstract

In a holographic approach, the evolution of a 4D strongly coupled non-Abelian plasma towards equilibrium can be studied investigating a 5D gravitational dual. The process driving the plasma out-of-equilibrium can be described by boundary sourcing, a deformation of the boundary metric; the analysis of the late-time dynamics allows to understand how the hydrodynamic regime settles in. We apply the method to a boost-invariant case, considering the effects of different quenches, solving the Einstein equations in the bulk and studying the time-dependence of observables such as the effective temperature, the energy density and the pressures. The main outcome is that, if the effective temperature of the system when the quench is switched off is $T_{eff}(\tau^*)=500$ MeV, thermalization is reached within a time of ${\cal O}$(1 fm/c), an important information if the case of the QCD plasma produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions is considered., Comment: LaTeX, 8 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

Mesons with quantum numbers JPC=1-+ cannot be represented as simple quark–antiquark pairs. We explore hybrid configurations in the light meson sector comprising a quark, an antiquark and an excited gluon, studying the properties of such states in a phenomenological model inspired by the gauge/gravity correspondence. The computed mass, compared to the experimental mass of the 1-+ candidates π1(1400) , π1(1600) and π1(2015) , favours π1(1400) as the lightest hybrid state. An interesting result concerns the stability of hybrid mesons at finite temperature: they disappear from the spectral function (i.e. they melt) at a lower temperature with respect to other states, light vector and scalar mesons and scalar glueballs.
