OBJECTIVE: Several sociodemographic variables are essential to the complete comprehension of people's health conditions. Also, social determinants of health are decisive in influencing people's health and healthcare strategy outcomes. Nevertheless, the level of awareness of the general population about the social determinants of health still seems poorly investigated. In this scenario, using an infodemiological approach, Google Trends represents a handy tool for monitoring internet-related search activities concerning this specific topic. This study aimed to assess the general population's consciousness about social determinants of health, testing widespread knowledge of these items and evaluating the association of the results obtained through Google-specific search volumes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected using the Google Trends tool using several search terms related to food, social problems, and economic issues, which are useful for defining some social determinants of health variables. Descriptive data analysis was performed to show the worldwide Relative Search Volume variations from 1 September 2013 to 31 August 2023. Pearson's correlation analysis tested Relative Search Volumes and later logarithmic transformation. The K-Nearest Neighbors analysis was used to define and assess Relative Search Volumes (RSV) associations. RESULTS: The results have shown that the general population was mainly interested in topics such as "social support" and "economic burden", showing frequent peaks during the 10 years of the study. According to Pearson's coefficients test, other specific interests and relative correlations emerged regarding social variables (i.e., social support and social problems), food, and financial distress. Moreover, the K-Nearest Neighbors analysis showed that searching activities for "social support", "lack of food", and "social problems" were highly related; for "economic burden", "financial burden", and "out of pocket" suggested the existence of financial distress. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study underline that social determinants of health are significant barriers to health and well-being and that non-medical factors should be considered more. Healthcare professionals involved in public health should study and understand more about the social determinants of health in relation to health outcomes to provide patient-centered care. Finally, this research suggests that we should encourage and maintain a more comprehensive approach to addressing the health needs of patients and communities, also by an infodemiological assessment. OBJECTIVE: The elderly population is the most at risk regarding adherence, especially in the coexistence of multiple diseases. This study aims to detect factors contributing to therapeutic non-adherence in elderly patients in home settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review protocol was developed to conduct the umbrella review using the methodological framework of the Richardson et al study. The search strategy was developed in December 2022 to conduct a systematic search and to perform an Umbrella Review of systematic reviews, meta-analyses and integrative reviews published from 2012 to 2022 in English. RESULTS: A total of 26,038 articles were identified and screened. 18 relevant articles were included in the study. CONCLUSIONS: Therapeutic adherence in elderly patients with comorbidities in polypharmacotherapy at home is a significant problem in public health and health care. Several factors of non-adherence have been identified in the studies reviewed, confirming that the problem is multifactorial. Reducing the number of medications prescribed would appear optimal, although often not possible, as this has been seen to have an immediate positive impact. A multidisciplinary approach makes it possible not to fragment care, ensuring positive feedback on therapeutic adherence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: The quality assessment process, based on customer satisfaction, is fundamental in the delivery of the best care services. This is most evident in care settings where trainee students are allowed to assist the patients. The purpose of this review is to clarify whether nursing students have an impact on patients' assessment of the quality of their nursing care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was carried out using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines in six databases: PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycInfo. Two co-authors independently screened titles, abstracts, and full-text articles, following explicit exclusion and inclusion criteria. Analyses included non-randomized and non-homogeneous samples, involving both selected patients and methods for assessing their satisfaction. RESULTS: After full-text screening, 30 articles were identified, but only 11 were considered pertinent to the topic of the review. The trainee-patient relationship is based on mutual help and can improve the patient experience and trainee learning. The instruments used to measure perceived quality were found to be valid and reliable. CONCLUSIONS: The studies under review show high levels of satisfaction among patients when nursing care is delivered through training, particularly when the patients who agree to be treated by nursing trainees have previous experience of hospitalization and relationships with trainees. Educational background and the empathy and communication skills of both professional nurses and trainees influence patients' perception of the quality of care and their satisfaction with it. Background. Multidrug resistance is an established and growing worldwide public health problem, since few therapeutic options remain available. MRSA is the leading Gram-positive organism which has spread both in the community and healthcare environment. Gram-negative bacteria, either fermenter (enterobacteriaceae) or nonfermenter, pose a major challenge to the healthcare providers because they can express a wide multidrug resistanc.e Methods. Specific keywords combinations were analitically searched in PubMed and Scopus databases. Publications concerning contact precaution procedures were reviewed. Results. The review on infection control and isolation precautions was carried out focusing on bundles that could help healthcare personnel to improve their action. Conclusions. This paper clearly refers to measures in order to control the spread of infectious disease. OBJECTIVE: Medication administration accounts for 40% of the nursing clinical activity in hospitals and nurses play a central role in granting the patient safety, as they are directly responsible for the patient care. This review aims at analyzing the correlation between the clinical risk management and the occurrence of medication errors and the effects of the shift work (such as excessive fatigue and sleep deprivation after a shift in hospital) on inpatient nurses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This paper adheres to the relevant EQUATOR guidelines. A systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA statement and pertinent articles were selected based on inclusion criteria and quality assessment factors. Two reviewers searched the bibliographic databases PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, CINAHL to collect all the available articles in English and Italian issued between 1992 and August 2017. RESULTS: The reviewers analyzed 19 of the 723 initially extracted references, as they focused on the impact of workload, shifts and sleep deprivation on the probability of making medication errors. CONCLUSIONS: The main reasons behind medication errors are stress, fatigue, increased workload, night shifts, nurse staffing ratio and workflow interruptions. These factors can have a significant negative impact on the health and the performance of the employees. Introduzione: L’evoluzione della formazione infermieristica ha di fatto portato ad un accrescimento di conoscenze e competenze che hanno reso gli infermieri dei veri e propri professionisti. Con l’introduzione del comma 566 della Legge di stabilità del 2015 e della Legge 24 del 2017, è stata posta una maggiore attenzione sull’utilizzo delle Linee Guida e su come esse, insieme alla buona pratica, possano ridurre il ricorso ad una medicina difensiva. Obiettivo: Indagine sulle conoscenze del personale infermieristico riguardanti i concetti di competenza avanzata e responsabilità professionale, in relazione al loro agire quotidiano, e ai nuovi assetti normativi. Materiali e Metodi: Uno studio cross-sectional è stato eseguito su un campione di 60 soggetti fra Giugno 2019 e Settembre 2019, presso l’ospedale Policlinico Umberto I di Roma. È stata condotta una survey, rivolta agli infermieri operanti nel setting dell’area critica e chirurgica, mediante l’utilizzo di un questionario non validato, in forma anonima in cui vengono analizzati e saggiati: a) dati anagrafici; b) analisi dell’attività lavorativa; c) analisi delle conoscenze. Risultati: Sono stati convalidati per lo studio 60 questionari correttamente compilati, con un tasso di risposta del 63.8%. Il 68.3% degli infermieri era di sesso femminile ed il 31.6% di sesso maschile. L’età media del campione è di 35.2 anni. Il 16.7% degli infermieri utilizza sempre le linee guida aziendali/ministeriali nella pratica clinica; il 36.7% le usa raramente; il 41.7% le utilizza abbastanza, mentre il 5% non le utilizza mai. In relazione alla conoscenza della normativa vigente, emerge che il 48.3% non conosce il comma 566 della Legge di stabilità, con il 48.3% del campione che asserisce di conoscere la Legge Gelli. Conclusione: Dai risultati ottenuti emerge la necessità del personale infermieristico di una maggiore formazione circa gli aspetti legali della professione mediante una formazione dedicata. Inoltre emerge l’importanza dell’aggiornamento professionale come mezzo per non incorrere in atti di medicina difensiva.

Background: Patient adherence to drug treatment is crucial to the success of any prescribed therapy, especially in chronic conditions. The present phenomenological qualitative study aims to explore the elderly experience in managing their medication therapy and their perception of medication adherence. Methods: Based on Husserl's perspective, a qualitative descriptive study was conducted utilizing the phenomenological approach, specifically Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The data analysis followed Giorgi's phenomenological approach and the inductive content analysis method. Approval for the study was obtained from the relevant Ethics Committee. Results: Themes emerged when participants described experiences about their own adherence to therapy. The following general theme emerged from the interviews and the phenomenological analysis: Generating awareness: taking therapy saves your life. It was followed by three other themes: (1) Drug therapy awareness; (2) Drug therapy in daily life; and (3) Drug therapy as a life partner. Conclusions: Elderly patients undergoing polypharmacological treatment emphasize the key factors for improving medication adherence, highlighting the influence of individual, motivational, and relational aspects. They express a strong desire for information and value the support of family doctors and nurses in managing therapy. Patient interviews indicate general support among elderly patients for using mobile health in pharmacological treatment, recognizing its potential and limitations.

Aim: To acquire a comprehensive understanding of the international nursing students' clinical learning environments, comparing and contrasting qualitative and quantitative insights., Background: The influx of international nursing students has increased in Italy and across Europe. These students, diverse in culture and language, encounter significant challenges to their education in clinical learning environments., Design: convergent mixed-methods research., Methods: Qualitative and quantitative data were collected concurrently and independently, with equal emphasis, following a QUAL-QUANT structure. Qualitative analysis used descriptive content analysis, while quantitative data were based on descriptive and correlation analyses on surveys using the CALD scale., Results: Overall 96 international nursing students participated in 24 focus groups. The CALD scale mean scores ranged from 2.7 to 4.5. The qualitative analysis presented two overarching themes: factors that promote a successful clinical learning environment and factors that inhibit a successful clinical learning environment in international students. The integration of qualitative and quantitative data generated four concordant and one discordant meta-inferences about the learning environment., Conclusions: Culturally sensitive clinical learning environments are imperative for the holistic development of international nursing students. Sleep quality significantly impacts individuals' overall health, especially in older adults. Older adults often face comorbid conditions, polypharmacy (the intake of five or more medications per day), and medication non-adherence, which are common among those with sleep disorders. The purpose of this systematic review is to examine the relationship between sleep quality and medication adherence in older adults and to describe the measuring instruments used. A systematic review was performed following the PRISMA guidelines. The PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases were screened from January 2024 to March 2024. Nine articles were included in the final synthesis based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The review found that poor sleep quality is significantly associated with reduced medication adherence in older adults. The key sleep determinants linked to medication non-adherence include sleep disorders, sleep efficiency, sleep duration, and daytime dysfunctions. Inappropriate medication prescriptions have been associated with reduced sleep efficiency. The tools for assessing sleep quality and medication adherence are predominantly subjective and varied. To address these challenges, a comprehensive geriatric assessment should include investigations into sleep disorders and comorbidity factors. Additionally, nursing educational interventions could be pivotal in improving medication adherence among older adults.

Background: In recent years, the technology world has significantly shaped society. This study aims to survey the views of registered nurses with hospital working experience regarding the personal communication devices use impact in hospital units. The secondary outcome of this study was to identify differences in mobile device use based on demographic and organizational factors., Study Design: Cross-sectional study by survey., Methods: The questionnaire comprises 22 items divided into four sections. Overall 778 questionnaires were included in the study, 329 questionnaires were collected on pen-and-paper, whereas 449 by an online survey., Results: Findings showed that smartphones have a different impact on performance, utilization and impact scale according to gender, age and educational attainment. Generally males using more frequently personal communication devices for non-work-related activities affected negatively their working performance by respect to females. Moreover, younger nurses report being more distracted by using smartphones for non-work-related activities than older nurses. At the same time, younger nurses believe that smartphones may lead to an improvement in patient care skills. Nurses with fewer years of service (1 month - 10 years) report being more distracted by non-work-related activities on their smartphones than nurses with more years of service (>20 years)., Conclusions: The smartphone is a potential distraction source. The most exposed groups are the younger nurses' and those with little work experience, and both groups (young age, less experience) can be considered factors for potential distraction.

Introduction: The global population is ageing, and healthcare systems continue to adopt outdated social models of ageing that do not respond to older people's needs. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of participants in the implementation of the Transcultural social-ethical-care (TEC-MED) model for integrated community care., Methods: A qualitative descriptive research study was conducted. Qualitative data were collected through individual interviews and focus groups with purposive sampling., Results: We gathered experiences from five older people, five informal caregivers, two training agents (nurses), six healthcare professionals and eight stakeholders (senior management of businesses, public administrators, researchers and educators). Four themes were extracted: TEC-MED as a new model of home care, TEC-MED model outcome, key role of training agent and platform and resources. Overall, all the participants were satisfied with the model and various positive outcomes were found. The TEC-MED model of care was inclusive and personalised and bridged the communication and integration gaps between different services for the care of dependent older people and their caregivers in the community. Recommendations were made for improvements to the model., Conclusion: New models of care that are inclusive, personalised and integrated are necessary to respond to the multiple needs of the older people. A model that integrates the multiple skills of healthcare professionals is an optimum solution in the care of the older people and their caregivers in Mediterranean countries. Similar research is imperative for other healthcare systems to help them prepare adequately to respond effectively to the needs of present and new generations of older people., Implications for Practice: The TEC-MED model presents a promising approach to addressing the complex care needs of older people and their caregivers by fostering inclusivity, personalisation and integration across services. For nursing practice, this model emphasizes the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration and the role of nurses in facilitating the adoption of new care strategies. Implementing such models in everyday practice could improve the quality of care provided to older adults, enhancing communication between healthcare providers and ensuring that care is more aligned with the individual needs of patients. Background: The changes in health, social and demographic needs impose new approaches to cures and care without giving up patients' safety. Although several studies analysed the patient safety approach and strategies, the literature considering the home care setting seems still scarce. The analysis of the phenomenon of medication errors in the primary care setting highlights the necessity of exploring the specific variables to understand how to prevent or reduce the occurrence of a medication error in the home context. This review investigates the main preventive strategies implemented at the patients' home to prevent and/or limit the possibility of a medication error., Design: The scoping review was conducted under the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses ex-tension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) statement and based on the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute., Methods: No time or language limit was set to obtain the most comprehensive results possible. The following databases were queried: PubMed, Cochrane, CINAHL, ERIC and PsycINFO via EBSCO. All literature published up to 31 December 2022 was considered for data collection., Results: The main preventive strategies implemented in the patient's home to prevent a medication error are: Multidisciplinary teams, therapeutic reconciliation and computerised systems that improve information sharing. As evidenced by all of the included studies, no educational intervention or preventive strategy individually reduces the risk of making a medication error., Conclusions: It would be desirable for healthcare professionals to be constantly updated about their knowledge and understand the importance of introducing the aforementioned preventive strategies to guarantee safe care that protects the person from me-dication errors even at the patient's home.

Introduction: Despite nurses representing the largest healthcare professional group, the number is not enough for global health coverage. Understanding Generation Z students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, internal and external influences, and beliefs in choosing nursing education is crucial. This knowledge empowers universities to enhance nursing program enrollment through targeted promotion and recruitment strategies., Objective: The aim was to understand why Italian students of Generation Z choose the Nursing Degree Course., Methods: In this pilot study, a cross-sectional design was used. A survey with closed and open answers analyzing demographics, opinions, and motivations among new enrolled nursing students was administered on the first day of the Bachelor of Nursing Degree course. Descriptive statistics were used. Quantitative data were analyzed with Chi-square and ANOVA tests and qualitative data underwent content analysis and coding. Correlation analysis explored relationships between qualitative and quantitative results., Results: Forty first-year students (85% female, average age 22) completed the questionnaire. The choice of the degree pathway, as the first or second option, is influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, the student's opinions, and family and social influences. Significant positive and negative associations were evidenced. Negative factors affecting choice included location and the responsibility for nursing care, while positive factors included role models, family advice, passion, curiosity for healthcare, the desire to help others, and family influences on decision-making., Conclusions: Among Italian generation Z students, the choice of the nursing degree pathway is influenced by social models, family advice, passion, the desire to help others, and curiosity. Universities should be more proactive in their recruitment and promotion efforts, transforming these events into vibrant meeting points for professionals from diverse nursing specialties. Background: The intensive care unit (ICU) brings together high-risk patients and interventions in a complex environment. Based on this consideration, medication administration error is the most common type of error that occurs in ICUs. Literature confirms that human factors (lack of knowledge, poor practices and negative attitudes) of nurses are the main contributors to the occurrence of medication administration errors in ICUs., Aim: To examine and compare the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour scores on medication administration error according to nurses' sociodemographic and professional variables., Study Design: This is a secondary analysis of data from a cross-sectional international study based on a survey. Descriptive statistics were computed for all items of the questionnaire. Non-parametric tests (Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney U tests) were used to carry out the comparison between groups., Results: The international sample consisted of 1383 nurses in 12 different countries. Statistically significant changes were seen in knowledge, attitudes and behaviour scores among several subgroups of the international population. Eastern nurses were more likely to show adequate knowledge about medication administration error prevention than Western nurses; concurrently, Western nurses were significantly more likely to show positive attitudes than Eastern nurses. No statistically significant differences in the behaviour scale were found in this study., Conclusions: The findings show a difference between knowledge and attitudes in relation to cultural background., Relevance to Clinical Practice: Decision makers in ICUs should consider cultural background when planning and implementing prevention strategies for medication administration errors. Nonadherence to therapy negatively impacts mortality and quality of life and results in suboptimal efficacy of treatment regimens, threats to patient safety, and increased healthcare costs for disease management. Mobile health solutions can offer users instruments that can promote therapeutic adherence. The objective of this review is to investigate the impact mobile health systems have on therapeutic adherence. Specifically, we want to map the main systems used, the functions implemented, and the different methods of adherence detection used. For this purpose, a scoping review was conducted. The following databases were consulted: PubMed, Cochrane Library, EBSCO (including APA PsycINFO, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, ERIC), including English-language studies published in the last 10 years (2012-2022). The main mobile health systems used are as follows: applications, automated messaging, interactive voice response, and mobile video games. The main features implemented to support medication management were as follows: reminders, self-monitoring instruments, educational support, and caregiver involvement. In conclusion, the use of interactive mobile health instruments intended for use by the patient and/or caregiver can improve objectively and subjectively detected therapeutic adherence. Objective: The aim of the study is to validate and adapt the "Knowledge Attitute and Behaviour in the administration of medication in the home care setting questionnaire" in the home care setting in Cordoba, Spain, through a cross-validation process., Design: Cross-sectional study SAMPLE: 106 community nurses provide home care in Cordoba, and are involved in the management of the medication process in the patient's home., Measurements: Community nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors toward medication error prevention strategies in-home care., Results: For the evaluation of psychometric properties, Cronbach's α was calculated, which returned a value of 0.639, showing good internal consistency. Most participants agreed that the home care setting increases the risk of medication errors., Conclusion: The study, underscores the importance of analyzing the phenomenon of medication errors in the home care setting. Problem Identification: To provide an overview of telenursing interventions, primary outcomes, and tools used in patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy, a scoping review was conducted., Literature Search: PubMed®, Embase®, and CINAHL® databases were searched using the following keywords: telenursing, adverse event, and drug therapy., Data Evaluation: From the screening process, 11 studies were identified., Synthesis: In patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy, telenursing interventions were mainly used to monitor symptoms, particularly fatigue, anxiety, and depression. The interventions used included outcome-specific, nonspecific, and validated tools, or tools developed from reporting systems for adverse events., Implications for Research: Large-scale, well-conducted randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses are needed to test the results of this scoping review.

Ethical challenges are traditionally described in a negative light, even though moral conflict can express the individual ability to perceive when something is not working and promote change. The true question, therefore, is not to how to silence moral conflict but how to educate it. Although the need for ethical support of health- and social-care professionals in elderly care is clearly perceived, there is no universal method for providing effective interventions. The authors hypothesize that adequate training sessions can help care professionals enhance this skill, once clear goals and specific educational techniques are set. This research tests the hypothesis on twenty care professionals working in acute and residential care settings for the elderly, building on the ethics round method. Mixed methods drawn from literature and the experience of educators were adapted to meet different educational goals. Moral issues can hardly be removed from a context characterized by increasing demand and decreasing resources, but they can be recognized and addressed with common efforts, a critical attitude, and a growth mindset. Enhancing these skills in qualified workers can help them accept the reality of work, release pressure, and identify common team goals. Background: Literature on the prevention of medication errors is growing, highlighting that knowledge, attitude and behavior with regard to medication errors are strategic to planning of educational activities and evaluating their impact on professional practice. In this context, the present pilot study aims to translate and validate nursing professionals' knowledge, attitudes and behavior (KAB theory) concerning medication administration errors in ICU from English into Persian. Furthermore, two main objectives of the project were: performing a pilot study among Iranian nurses using the translated questionnaire and carrying out a cultural measurement of the KAB theory concerning medication administration errors in an ICU questionnaire across two groups of Italian and Iranian populations., Methods: A cross-cultural adaptation of an instrument, according to the Checklist for reporting of survey studies (CROSS), was performed. The convenience sample was made up of 529 Iranian and Italian registered nurses working in ICU. An exploratory factor analysis was performed and reliability was assessed. A multi-group confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to test the measurement invariance. Ethical approval was obtained., Results: There was an excellent internal consistency for the 19-item scale. Results regarding factorial invariance showed that the nursing population from Italy and Iran used the same cognitive framework to conceptualize the prevention of medication errors., Conclusions: Findings from this preliminary translation and cross-cultural validation confirm that the questionnaire is a reliable and valid instrument within Persian healthcare settings. Moreover, these findings suggest that Italian and Persian nurses used an identical cognitive framework or mental model when thinking about medication errors prevention. The paper not only provides, for the first time, a validated instrument to evaluate the KAB theory in Iran, but it should promote other researchers in extending this kind of research, supporting those countries where attention to medical error is still increasing.
