This paper investigates the effect of alteration on the physicomechanical properties of igneous rocks used as aggregates, from various areas from Greece. The studied lithologies include serpentinized dunites, serpentinized harzburgites, serpentinized lherzolites, metamorphic gabbros, diabases, dacites and andesites. Quantitative petrographic analysis shows that the tested samples display various percentages of secondary phyllosilicate minerals. Mineral quantification of the studied rock samples was performed by using the Rietveld method on X-ray diffraction patterns. The samples were also tested to assign moisture content (w (%)), total porosity (nt (%)), uniaxial compressive strength (UCS (MPa)) and Los Angeles abrasion test (LA (%)). The influence of secondary phyllosilicate minerals on the physicomechanical behavior of the tested samples was determined using regression analysis and their derived equations. Regression analysis shows a positive relationship between the percentage of the phyllosilicate minerals of the rocks and the moisture content as well as with the total porosity values. In mafic and ultramafic rock samples, the relationships between the secondary phyllosilicate minerals and their physicomechanical properties have shown that the total amount of the secondary phyllosilicate minerals results negatively on their physicomechanical properties. Carbon dioxide (CO2) has reached a higher level of emissions in the last decades, and as it is widely known, CO2 is responsible for numerous environmental problems, such as climate change. Thus, there is a great need for the application of CO2 capture and storage, as well as of CO2 utilization technologies (CCUS). This review article focuses on summarizing the current CCUS state-of-the-art methods used in Europe. Special emphasis has been given to mineralization methods/technologies, especially in basalts and sandstones, which are considered to be suitable for CO2 mineralization. Furthermore, a questionnaire survey was also carried out in order to investigate how informed about CO2 issues European citizens are, as well as whether their background is relative to their positive or negative opinion about the establishment of CCUS technologies in their countries. In addition, social acceptance by the community requires contact with citizens and stakeholders, as well as ensuring mutual trust through open communication and the opportunity to participate as early as possible in the development of actions and projects related to CO2 capture and storage, at all appropriate levels of government internationally, as citizens need to understand the benefits from such new technologies, from the local to the international level. The presence or the absence of swelling clay minerals in rocks, which are used in various construction applications, constitutes a determinant factor for their strength, and consequently, in their general behavior in various construction applications, as they have the ability to swell up to 400 times of their usual volume, causing failures to any application in which they participate. The aim of this study is to respond to the question of whether the empirical method of methylene blue yields equally safe and correct results in different types of igneous rocks and if not, which is the determining factor affecting the results. The answer to this complex question is feasible by investigating the microscopic structure and the mineralogy of the studied rocks, and particularly, using the content of specific phyllosilicate minerals which may be related or not with the methylene blue values. According to the results, the methylene blue test seems to work correctly for the intermediate (Group I) and mafic (Group II) examined rocks, but it seems to be wrong for the highly serpentinized ultramafic rocks (up to 70% of serpentine) (Group III). This study investigates how the petrographic features of Klepa Nafpaktias sandstones affect their behavior in construction applications such as concrete, in environmental applications such as energy storage as well as whether they are suitable for the above uses. For achieving this goal, sandstones (ten samples) were collected in order to study their petrographic characteristics using petrographic microscope and GIS software, as well as their basic physical, mechanical and physicochemical properties were also examined. Concrete specimens (C25/30) were made according to international standards including the investigated aggregate rocks in various grain sizes. Various sandstones were tested and classified in three district groups according to their physicomechanical features as well as to their petrographic and microtopographic characteristics. Concrete strength's results determined the samples into three groups which are in accordance with their initial classification which was relative to their grain size (coarse to fine-grained). As the grain size decreases their physicomechanical and physicochemical properties get better resulting in higher concrete strength values (25 to 32 MPa). Furthermore, the proposed ratio C/A (crystals/mm2) seems to influence the aggregate properties which constitute critical factors for the final concrete strength, presenting the more fine-grained sandstones as the most suitable for concrete aggregates. Concerning the use of Klepa Nafpaktias sandstones as potential energy reservoirs, the studied sandstones presented as suitable for CO2 storage according to their physicomechanical characteristics. This paper examined three different types of recycled materials, such as beer green glass, waste tile, and asphalt, which will be used in different mixtures in order to prepare concrete specimens and, more specifically, their effect on concrete strength and how the petrographic characteristics of various recycled materials influenced the durability of C25/30 strength class concrete. Particular emphasis was placed on the effect of artificial microroughness of glassy and smooth surfaces of recycled materials on their final concrete strength. The concrete strength values do not show great variance, but their limited differences have been qualitatively interpreted by a new promising petrographic methodology, including the study of the surface texture of the used aggregate materials. Concretes are produced with constant volume proportions, workability, mixing, and curing conditions while using different sizes of each aggregate type. The aggregates were mixed both in dry and water saturated states in concretes. Concretes that are made by a mixture of beer green glass with quartz primer, as well as of tile with quartz primer, presented the optimum possible results of the compressive strength. This paper investigates the interrelationships between the engineering properties of igneous aggregate rocks from Greece with the aid of the R-mode factor analysis. The collected samples represent mafic and ultramafic rocks from the ophiolite complexes of Gerania, Guevgueli, Veria-Naousa, and Edessa as well as intermediate-acidic rocks from the surrounding areas of the complexes. Factor analysis verifies the important interdependences among the engineering parameters like physical, mechanical, geometrical, and physicochemical properties by giving statistical significance. Variations of the petrographic characteristics of the investigated rocks influence their engineering properties as well as the interdependence among them. Factor 1, which is the most representative one (~36% of the total variance), shows interdependences between certain physical, mechanical, physicochemical properties such as total porosity (nt) with moisture content (w), nt with the Los Abrasion value (LA), and the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) with point load index Is(50). Additionally, the second factor (~27% of the total data variability) correlates physical properties such as w, nt, physicochemical properties such as the methylene blue test (MBF), mechanical properties such as UCS, Is(50), and loss on ignition (LOI), which highlights the effect of mineralogy on these properties. Lastly, Factor 3 (~14% of the total data variability) expresses the interdependence of the flakiness index (IF), which is an elongation index (IE) relative to their alteration (LOI). This paper examines the effect of the aggregate type on concrete strength, and more specifically, how the petrographic characteristics of various aggregate rocks as well as their physico-mechanical properties influences the durability of C 25/30 strength class concrete. The studied aggregate rocks were derived from Veria-Naousa and Edessa ophiolitic complexes as well as granodiorite and albitite rocks from their surrounding areas in central Macedonia (Greece). Concretes were produced with constant volume proportions, workability, mixing and curing conditions using different sizes of each aggregate type. Aggregates were mixed both in dry and water saturated states in concretes. Six different types of aggregates were examined and classified in three district groups according to their physicomechanical properties, petrographic characteristics and surface texture. The classification in groups after the concrete compressive strength test verified the initial classification in the same three groups. Group I (ultramafic rocks) presented the lowest concrete strengths, depending on their high alteration degree and the low mechanical properties of ultramafic aggregates. Group II (mafic rocks and granodiorite) presented a wide range of concrete strengths, depending on different petrographic characteristics and mechanical properties. Group III (albite rocks) presented the highest concrete strengths, depending on their lowest alteration degree and their highest mechanical properties. This case study investigates the influence of the mineralogical composition of ultramafic rocks derived from two ophiolite complexes from Greece (Veria-Naousa and Gerania) on their mechanical, physical and physicochemical properties. The investigated lithologies include lherzolite, harzburgite, dunite and olivine-orthopyroxenite with variable degrees of alteration. The ratio of secondary minerals to primary minerals (SEC/PR) of the studied ultramafic rocks shows good correlations with their physical, physicochemical and mechanical properties, suggesting that alteration has a negative effect on the engineering performance of the ultramafic rocks. Among the secondary minerals, serpentine plays the most critical role in determining the moisture content, the total porosity and hence the soundness of the host rocks, due to its phyllosilicate structure, which allows more water/solutions to be captured. The high percentage of serpentine creates surfaces of weakness, and as a result, it decreases the rock strength. This study aims at the interpretation of the adverse effects of the secondary products in two types of rocks during their performance as concrete aggregates. Serpentinised peridotites contain serpentine, as the dominant secondary phase, which creates low microroughness on the particles and therefore unfavorable surfaces for cement paste to adequately adhere to. Moreover, its soft and platy nature contributes to the development of platy defects along the contacts of the aggregate particles with the cement paste. Poor adherence of the paste, failures along the contacts of the aggregate particles and potential propagation of the defects into the concrete during curing (and perhaps subsequently in-service) explain the poor performance of highly serpentinised rocks as concrete aggregates. Andesites show a different composition with a variety of secondary products including albite, chlorite, calcite, Fe-oxides and clay minerals. The role of all these products was investigated and it appears that only smectite is important, as even small amounts of it may be detrimental to the quality of the rocks as concrete aggregates. It is likely that abnormal hydration reactions and considerable swelling of the smectite result in the appearance of defects in the concrete, hence contributing to its low performance. Various types of plutonic and volcanic rocks and their alteration products from Greece (serpentinite, magnesite and andesite), have been used for sustainable removal of Uranium (U) from the acidic drainage of Kirki mine, as well as for the pH increase of the polluted solutions. In this light, this study aims at the further understanding and improvement of the ecofriendly reuse of sterile, natural raw materials (including those remaining through industrial processing and engineering testing of aggregate rocks), for remediation of acid mine drainage. The selected rocks constitute such residues of sterile materials were used as filters in experimental continuous flow devices in the form of batch-type columns, in order to investigate acidic remediation properties with special focus on U removal. The initial pH of the wastewater was 2.90 and increased after seven (7) days of experimental application and more specifically from the fourth day onwards. Uranium removal became quantitatively significant once pH reached the value of 5.09. The volcanic rocks appeared to be more effective for U removal than the plutonic ones because of microtextural differences. However, optimum U removal was mainly achieved by serpentinite: while the raw materials rich in Mg strongly reacted and remediated the pH of the drainage water waste. Furthermore, the increase of pH values due to the presence of mineral raw materials, provided increased oxidation potential which deactivated the toxic load of metals, particularly U. Consequently, batch-type serpentinite reaction with the tailing fluid caused a drop in U concentration from an initial value of 254 ppb to the one of 8 ppb, which corresponds to 97% of removal. Andesite presented the second best reactant for experimental remediation, especially when it was mixed with magnetically separated mineral fractions. • The existence of bamboo fiber significantly improve the porous asphalt performance for different gradations. • The utilization of natural fiber is providing significant contribution to alternative pavement material. • Smaller quantities of bamboo fiber enhancing the strength, without lowering the permeability coefficient. • The nominal size of aggregate affect the overall performance of porous asphalt with various traffic load and temperature. Porous Asphalt (PA) is a highly permeable asphalt surface used to create and maintain permeable pavements for storm water management and runoff reduction. Under the impacts of repetitive vehicle loads, warm weather, and heavily rainfall, the structure was vulnerable to deterioration from cracking, rutting, stripping, and quick ageing. This research aims to examine the role of bamboo fiber in improving the physical and mechanical properties and overcome the issue related to PA. Among the tests involve are Cantabro loss, permeability, binder draindown, stability and resilient modulus. Two types of PA gradation involved with four different proportion of bamboo fiber (0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%, 0.5%). From the findings, it could be conducted that the existence of bamboo fiber can significantly improve the PA performance for both gradations. This study examines how the chemical composition of ultramafic and mafic rocks effects their physicomechanical properties and therefore how influences the concrete strength of the produced concrete specimens. For this scope, ultramafic (Group I) and mafic rocks (Group II) derived from the Veria–Naousa and Edessa ophiolite complexes (Greece) were selected in order to identify their chemical composition and their engineering properties according to international standards. Additionally, representative rocks were used as concrete aggregates in order to produce concrete specimens, whereas their mechanical strength was calculated. A geochemical index (Ga) was proposed and correlated with the engineering properties of the examined rocks as well as with the widely used alteration degree LOI (loss on ignition). Correlation diagrams between engineering properties and the proposed geochemical index (Ga) have showed that these properties were strongly influenced by the alteration processes expressed via Ga index. More particularly, mainly serpentine in ultramafic and chlorite in mafic rocks, minerals indicators for the alteration of ultramafic and mafic rocks, respectively, seem to determine their engineering properties. We investigate with this study the effectiveness of mechanically activated serpentinite in capturing Cu (II) from the multi-constituent acidic wastewater of the pit lakes of the Agios Philippos mine (Greece), proposing specific areas with serpentinites suitable for such environmental applications. For this purpose ultramafic rock samples that are characterized by variable degrees of serpentinization from ophiolitic outcrops exposed in the regions of Veria-Naousa and Edessa have been examined regarding their capacity to remove the toxic load of Cu (II) from wastewater after having been mechanically activated through a Los Angeles (LA) machine (500, 1000 and 1500 revolutions). The more serpentinized and mechanically activated samples, as they have been characterized after a combination of various mineralogical, petrographic, geochemical analyses as well as after different stresses of abrasion and attrition, seem to be more effective in Cu removal than the less serpentinized ones. Selective removal of Cu (II) in the wroewolfeite phase was obtained by using the mechanically activated highly serpentinized ultramafic rocks. Furthermore, areas with highly serpentinized ultramafic rocks defined after petrographic mapping, using GIS method, which can potentially be used as filters for the effective Cu (II) removal from industrial wastewater are suggested. This paper investigates an alternative use of sterile aggregate materials which may arise from various construction applications in conjunction with other low-cost mineral raw materials to remediate the acid mine drainage phenomenon. This study is based on the combination of unprocessed mineral raw materials, as well as on the basic concept of the cyclic economy where the conversion of a waste into a raw material for another application can be achieved. In this study, in order to examine the remediation, in lab scale, of the drainage waste water of Agios Philippos mine, an experimental electrically continuous flow-driven forced device was constructed, enriching the research gap relative to this type of remediation approach. Through this experimental device, the use of certain mixes of mineral raw materials (serpentinite, andesite, magnesite, peat, and biochar) was studied. Our results focus on the impact of the studied mineral raw materials and especially on their synergy on the water purification potential under continuous water flow operation. Using the new 7-day experimental electrically continuous flow-driven forced device with certain mixes of mineral raw materials, the increase of pH values from 3.00 to 6.82 was achieved. Moreover, with use of the experimental device, the removal of toxic load was achieved, and more specifically the concentration of Fe was decreased from 6149 to 1300 ppb, Cu from 8847 to 35 ppb, and Zn from 285,458 to 50,000 ppb. This study presents the combined use of field mapping, remote sensing data analysis, mineralogy, spectroscopy and GIS techniques for the geological mapping of Antiparos Island. Antiparos is part of the Cyclades Blueschist Belt located in central Aegean, where gneisses, schists and Pliocene volcanic rocks occurred. During the extended field work, a number of volcanic rock samples were collected from the southern part of Antiparos. The sampling strategy was to collect samples from the primary as well as the altered rocks in specific areas in which they were previously located from the remote sensing data processing. In this study, high resolution satellite images have been carried out in order to detect, allocate and separate the different geological formations. Furthermore, the existing geological map was georeferenced and all the tectonic lines and boundaries were digitized. All these features were implemented in a Mobile Mapper CE GPS using Arcpad GIS and checked in situ. The collected samples were analyzed in the laboratory using various techniques including XRD, Petrographic Microscopy and SEM. The qualitative mineralogical analyses were conducted by using XRD. The study was supplemented by the petrographic observations providing a detailed characterization of rock textures. In addition, SEM study and SEM-EDS analyses of the samples were emphasized on the genetic relations of the minerals. The laboratory results revealed that specific corrections should be made in the previous geological map of Antiparos concerning the volcanic rocks, especially at the southern part of the island. A significant conclusion is that the rock described as volcanic in the previous map proved to be a fossiliferous limestone which includes micritic matrix of calcite with an insignificant amount of fossils. All the analogical and digital data and the results of the petrographic analysis were imported in a geodatabase specially designed for geological data. Copper slag, a by-product of the pyrometallurgical process used for obtaining copper from copper ore in Bor, Serbia, contains mainly silicon, iron, calcium, and aluminium oxides. Due to such properties, it is disposed of in landfills. Despite the favourable technical properties copper slag aggregates possess, such as low-water absorption (WA24 0.6%), low resistance to fragmentation (LA 10%), and low resistance to wear (MDE 4%), its use in the construction industry is still limited. The results of testing the technical properties of copper slag aggregates (CSAs) as a potential replacement for natural river aggregate (RA) are presented in this paper. The experiments included tests on three concrete mixtures with partial replacement of coarse natural aggregate with copper slag. The replacement of RA particle sizes of 8/16 mm and 16/31.5 mm with CSA in the amount of 20% + 50% and 50% + 50% resulted in an increase in the compressive strength of 12.4% and 10.5%, respectively. The increase of CSA content led to a decrease in water penetration resistance and salt-frost resistance of concrete, whereas the resistance to chloride ion penetration did not change significantly. • Focus οn the obsidian source cropping out in Nychia area of Milos Island providing new analytical data useful from geological and archeological perspective. • A suitable methodology for an integrated obsidian characterization is proposed by combining Polarized light Microscopy, XRPD, SEM-EDS and portable Raman analysis. • Characterization of the most homogeneous vitreous part of obsidian samples ("amorphous phase") promoting further their fully description. In this study obsidian samples from "Nychia" area of Milos Island (Greece) have been analyzed and characterized with various analytical techniques including polarizing microscopy, XRPD, SEM/EDS, ICP-MS and Raman Spectroscopy. The studied samples have a rhyolitic composition. Microliths (feldspars, silica oxide phases, hornblende, biotite and opaque minerals), constituting the well-defined crystalline phases, are surrounded by a glassy matrix, which constitutes an equally defined "amorphous phase". In terms of texture, samples were divided into two groups, a healthy one and a partially devitrified one exhibiting perlitic texture, indicating the effect of locally different volcanic processes in the same narrow area. Furthermore, focused investigation relative to the microchemistry of the "amorphous phase" of the studied samples revealed that these data have satisfactorily discriminated the natural glasses of Nychia Milos source in Mediterranean area. Such results could also be used as the basis of a flexible method useful for trans-disciplinary problems dealing with the origin of obsidian artefacts. The Raman spectroscopy results of the Nychia samples offered insights into the use of the technique as a reliable nondestructive sourcing analytical tool. Moreover, the potential for a multifarious characterization of the glasses enhances further the geological research as well as the archaeological provenance issues of obsidians. The Edessa ophiolite complex of northern Greece consists of remnants of oceanic lithosphere emplaced during the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous onto the Palaeozoic-Mesozoic continental margin of Eurasia. This study presents new data on mineral compositions of mantle peridotites from this ophiolite, especially serpentinised harzburgite and minor lherzolite. Lherzolite formed by low to moderate degrees of partial melting and subsequent melt-rock reaction in an oceanic spreading setting. On the other hand, refractory harzburgite formed by high degrees of partial melting in a supra-subduction zone (SSZ) setting. These SSZ mantle peridotites contain Cr-rich spinel residual after partial melting of more fertile (abyssal) lherzolite with Al-rich spinel. Chromite with Cr# > 60 in harzburgite resulted from chemical modification of residual Cr-spinel and, along with the presence of euhedral chromite, is indicative of late melt-peridotite interaction in the mantle wedge. Mineral compositions suggest that the Edessa oceanic mantle evolved from a typical mid-ocean ridge (MOR) oceanic basin to the mantle wedge of a SSZ. This scenario explains the higher degrees of partial melting recorded in harzburgite, as well as the overprint of primary mineralogical characteristics in the Edessa peridotites.
