1. Nuclear level densities and $\gamma-$ray strength functions of $^{111,112,113}$Sn isotopes studied with the Oslo method

Abstract

The $^{111,112,113}$Sn isotopes have been studied with ($p,d \gamma$), ($p,p^{\prime} \gamma$), and ($d,p \gamma$) reactions to extract the nuclear level densities (NLDs) and $\gamma$-ray strength functions (GSFs) of these nuclei below the neutron separation energy by means of the Oslo method. The experimental NLDs for all three nuclei demonstrate a trend compatible with the constant-temperature model below the neutron separation energy while also being in good agreement with the NLDs of neighboring Sn isotopes, obtained previously with the Oslo-type and neutron evaporation experiments. The extracted microcanonical entropies yield $\approx 1.5$ $k_B$ entropy of a valence neutron in both $^{111}$Sn and $^{113}$Sn. Moreover, the deduced microcanonical temperatures indeed suggest a clear constant-temperature behavior above $\approx$ 3 MeV in $^{111,113}$Sn and above $\approx$ 4.5 MeV in $^{112}$Sn. We observe signatures for the first broken neutron pairs between 2 and 4 MeV in all three nuclei. The GSFs obtained with the Oslo method are found to be in good agreement below the neutron threshold with the strengths of $^{112,114}$Sn extracted in the ($p,p^{\prime}$) Coulomb excitation experiments., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Laser resonance ionization spectroscopy was performed on the rare einsteinium isotopes Es253-255 at the RISIKO mass separator in Mainz. With low sample sizes ranging down to femtograms, the prominent 352 nm-ground-state transition was measured in all three einsteinium isotopes, and four additional ground-state transitions were measured in Es254. Hyperfine-structure analysis resulted in assigned spin values of I(Es254)=7 and I(Es255)=7/2. From the extracted coupling constants, nuclear magnetic dipole moments of μI(Es254)=3.42(7)μN and μI(Es255)=4.14(10)μN as well as spectroscopic electric quadrupole moments of Qs(Es254)=9.6(1.2)eb and Qs(Es255)=5.1(1.7)eb were derived. Our value for Es254 deviates from the value of |μI(Es254)|=4.35(41)μN extracted from the angular anisotropy of α-radiation emitted by Es254.

Abstract

The cascading 3.21 MeV and 4.44 MeV electric quadrupole transitions have been observed from the Hoyle state at 7.65 MeV excitation energy in $^{12}$C, excited by the $^{12}$C(p,p$^{\prime}$) reaction at 10.7 MeV proton energy. From the proton-$\gamma$-$\gamma$ triple coincidence data, a value of ${\Gamma_{\rm rad}}/{\Gamma}=6.2(6) \times 10^{-4}$ was obtained for the radiative branching ratio. Using our results, together with ${\Gamma_{\pi}^{E0}}/{\Gamma}$ from Eriksen et al., Phys. Rev. C 102, 024320 and the currently adopted $\Gamma_{\pi}(E0)$ values, the radiative width of the Hoyle state is determined as $\Gamma_{\rm rad}=5.1(6) \times 10^{-3}$ eV. This value is about 34% higher than the currently adopted value and will impact on models of stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Nuclear magic numbers, which emerge from the strong nuclear force based on quantum chromodynamics, correspond to fully occupied energy shells of protons, or neutrons inside atomic nuclei. Doubly magic nuclei, with magic numbers for both protons and neutrons, are spherical and extremely rare across the nuclear landscape. While the sequence of magic numbers is well established for stable nuclei, evidence reveals modifications for nuclei with a large proton-to-neutron asymmetry. Here, we provide the first spectroscopic study of the doubly magic nucleus $^{78}$Ni, fourteen neutrons beyond the last stable nickel isotope. We provide direct evidence for its doubly magic nature, which is also predicted by ab initio calculations based on chiral effective field theory interactions and the quasi-particle random-phase approximation. However, our results also provide the first indication of the breakdown of the neutron magic number 50 and proton magic number 28 beyond this stronghold, caused by a competing deformed structure. State-of-the-art phenomenological shell-model calculations reproduce this shape coexistence, predicting further a rapid transition from spherical to deformed ground states with $^{78}$Ni as turning point.

Abstract

A nuclear spectroscopy experiment was conducted to study α-decay chains stemming from isotopes of flerovium (element Z=114). An upgraded TASISpec decay station was placed behind the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany. The fusion-evaporation reactions ^{48}Ca+^{242}Pu and ^{48}Ca+^{244}Pu provided a total of 32 flerovium-candidate decay chains, of which two and eleven were firmly assigned to ^{286}Fl and ^{288}Fl, respectively. A prompt coincidence between a 9.60(1)-MeV α particle event and a 0.36(1)-MeV conversion electron marked the first observation of an excited state in an even-even isotope of the heaviest man-made elements, namely ^{282}Cn. Spectroscopy of ^{288}Fl decay chains fixed Q_{α}=10.06(1)  MeV. In one case, a Q_{α}=9.46(1)-MeV decay from ^{284}Cn into ^{280}Ds was observed, with ^{280}Ds fissioning after only 518  μs. The impact of these findings, aggregated with existing data on decay chains of ^{286,288}Fl, on the size of an anticipated shell gap at proton number Z=114 is discussed in light of predictions from two beyond-mean-field calculations, which take into account triaxial deformation.

Abstract

An upgraded TASISpec setup, with the addition of a veto DSSD and the new Compex detector-germanium array, has been employed with the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, to study flerovium (element 114) decay chains. The detector upgrades along with development of new analytical techniques have improved the sensitivity of the TASISpec setup for measuring α-photon coincidences. These improvements have been assessed with test reactions. The reaction 48Ca+206,207Pb was used for verification of experimental parameters such as transmission to implantation DSSD and target-segment to α-decay correlations. The reaction 48Ca+ nat Hf was used to produce several short-lived nuclei with multiple-α decay chains to investigate pile-up event deconvolution.

Abstract

Particle-$\gamma$ coincidence experiments were performed at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory with the $^{181}$Ta(d,X) and $^{181}$Ta($^{3}$He,X) reactions, to measure the nuclear level densities (NLDs) and $\gamma$-ray strength functions ($\gamma$SFs) of $^{180, 181, 182}$Ta using the Oslo method. The Back-shifted Fermi-Gas, Constant Temperature plus Fermi Gas, and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus Combinatorial models where used for the absolute normalisations of the experimental NLDs at the neutron separation energies. The NLDs and $\gamma$SFs are used to calculate the corresponding $^{181}$Ta(n,$\gamma$) cross sections and these are compared to results from other techniques. The energy region of the scissors resonance strength is investigated and from the data and comparison to prior work it is concluded that the scissors strength splits into two distinct parts. This splitting may allow for the determination of triaxiality and a $\gamma$ deformation of $14.9^{\circ} \pm 1.8^{\circ}$ was determined for $^{181}$Ta.

Abstract

In this work, we present new data on the $^{89}$Y($\gamma$,n) cross section studied with a quasi-monochromatic photon beam produced at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility in Japan contributing torwards resolving a long standing discrepancy between existing measurements of this cross section. Results for $\gamma$-ray strength function below threshold obtained by applying the Oslo method to $^{89}$Y($p,p'\gamma$)$^{89}$Y coincidences combined with the $^{89}$Y($\gamma$,n) data this providing experimental data for the $\gamma$-ray strength function of $^{89}$Y for $\gamma$ energies in the range of $\approx 1.6$ Mev to $\approx$ 20 MeV. A low-energy enhancement is seen for $\gamma$-rays below $\approx 2.5$ MeV. Shell-model calculations indicate that this feature is caused by strong, low-energy $M1$ transitions at high excitation energies. The nuclear level density and $\gamma$-ray strength function have been extracted from $^{89}$Y($d,p \gamma$)$^{90}$Y coincidences using the Oslo method. Using the ($\gamma,n$) and ($d,p\gamma$) data as experimental constraints, we have calculated the $^{89}$Y($n,\gamma$)$^{90}$Y cross section with the TALYS reaction code. Our results have been compared with directly measured (n,$\gamma$) cross sections and evaluations. The $N=50$ isotope $^{89}$Y is an important bottleneck in the s-process and the magnitude of the $^{89}$Y(n,$\gamma)$ cross section is key to understanding how s-process stars produce heavy isotopes., Comment: 18 pages (including references) and 16 figures, to be submitted to PRC

Abstract

Prompt fission $\gamma$-rays are responsible for approximately 5\% of the total energy released in fission, and therefore important to understand when modelling nuclear reactors. In this work we present prompt $\gamma$-ray emission characteristics in fission, for the first time as a function of the nuclear excitation energy of the fissioning system. Emitted $\gamma$-ray spectra were measured, and $\gamma$-ray multiplicities and average and total $\gamma$ energies per fission were determined for the $^{233}$U(d,pf) reaction for excitation energies between 4.8 and 10 MeV, and for the $^{239}$Pu(d,pf) reaction between 4.5 and 9 MeV. The spectral characteristics show no significant change as a function of excitation energy above the fission barrier, despite the fact that an extra $\sim$5 MeV of energy is potentially available in the excited fragments for $\gamma$-decay. The measured results are compared to model calculations made for prompt $\gamma$-ray emission with the fission model code GEF. Further comparison with previously obtained results from thermal neutron induced fission is made to characterize possible differences arising from using the surrogate (d,p) reaction.

Abstract

Chemical reactivity of the superheavy elements nihonium (Nh, element 113) and moscovium (Mc, element 115) has been studied by the gas-solid chromatography method using a new combined chromatography and detection setup. The Mc isotope, 288Mc, was produced in the nuclear fusion reaction of 48Ca ions with 243Am targets at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum Darmstadt, Germany. After isolating 288Mc ions in the gas-filled separator TASCA, adsorption of 288Mc and its decay product 284Nh on silicon oxide and gold surfaces was investigated. As a result of this work, the values of the adsorption enthalpy of Nh and Mc on the silicon oxide surface were determined for the first time, … and … The obtained -ΔHads values are in good agreement with results of advanced relativistic calculations. Both elements, Nh and Mc, were shown to interact more weakly with the silicon oxide surface than their lighter homologues Tl and Bi, respectively. However, Nh and Mc turned out to be more reactive than the neighbouring closed-shell and quasi-closed-shell elements copernicium (Cn, element 112) and flerovium (Fl, element 114), respectively. One of the greatest questions for modern physics to address is how elements heavier than iron are created in extreme, astrophysical environments. A particularly challenging part of that question is the creation of the so-called p-nuclei, which are believed to be mainly produced in some types of supernovae. The lack of needed nuclear data presents an obstacle in nailing down the precise site and astrophysical conditions. In this work, we present for the first time measurements on the nuclear level density and average strength function of $^{92}$Mo. State-of-the-art p-process calculations systematically underestimate the observed solar abundance of this isotope. Our data provide stringent constraints on the $^{91}$Nb$(p,{\gamma})^{92}$Mo reaction rate, which is the last unmeasured reaction in the nucleosynthesis puzzle of $^{92}$Mo. Based on our results, we conclude that the $^{92}$Mo abundance anomaly is not due to the nuclear physics input to astrophysical model calculations., Comment: Submitted to PRC

Abstract

The electromagnetic structure of $^{140}$Sm was studied in a low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment with a radioactive ion beam from the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The $2^+$ and $4^+$ states of the ground-state band and a second $2^+$ state were populated by multi-step excitation. The analysis of the differential Coulomb excitation cross sections yielded reduced transition probabilities between all observed states and the spectroscopic quadrupole moment for the $2_1^+$ state. The experimental results are compared to large-scale shell model calculations and beyond-mean-field calculations based on the Gogny D1S interaction with a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian formalism. Simpler geometric and algebraic models are also employed to interpret the experimental data. The results indicate that $^{140}$Sm shows considerable $\gamma$ softness, but in contrast to earlier speculation no signs of shape coexistence at low excitation energy. Abstract

We investigated the 238U(d,p) reaction as a surrogate for the n + 238U reaction. For this purpose we measured for the first time the gamma-decay and fission probabilities of 239U* simultaneously and compared them to the corresponding neutron-induced data. We present the details of the procedure to infer the decay probabilities, as well as a thorough uncertainty analysis, including parameter correlations. Calculations based on the continuum-discretized coupled-channels and distorted-wave Born approximations were used to correct our data from detected protons originating from elastic and inelastic deuteron breakup. In the region where the fission and gamma-decay probabilities compete, the corrected fission probability is in agreement with neutron-induced data, whereas the gamma-decay probability is much higher than the neutron-induced data. In this work we present prompt γ-ray emission characteristics in fission as a function of the nuclear excitation energy of the fissioning system. Emitted γ-ray spectra were measured, and γ-ray multiplicities and average and total γ energies per fission were determined for the U(d,pf)233 reaction for excitation energies between 4.8 and 10 MeV, and for the Pu(d,pf)239 reaction between 4.5 and 9 MeV. The spectral characteristics show no significant change as a function of excitation energy above the fission barrier, despite the fact that an extra ∼5 MeV of energy is potentially available in the excited fragments for γ decay. The measured results are compared with model calculations made for prompt γ-ray emission with the fission model code gef. Further comparison with previously obtained results from thermal neutron induced fission is made to characterize possible differences arising from using the surrogate (d,p) reaction.

Abstract

The nuclear level densities and γ-ray strength functions of La138,139,140 were measured using the La139(He3,α), La139(He3,He3′), and La139(d,p) reactions. The particle-γ coincidences were recorded with the silicon particle telescope (SiRi) and NaI(Tl) (CACTUS) arrays. In the context of these experimental results, the low-energy enhancement in the A∼140 region is discussed. The La137,138,139(n,γ) cross sections were calculated at s- and p-process temperatures using the experimentally measured nuclear level densities and γ-ray strength functions. Abstract

Inelastic scattering of ⁷²,⁷⁴Ni off a proton target was performed at RIBF, RIKEN, Japan. The isotopes were produced by the fission of ²³⁸U on a thick Beryllium target and were then selected and identified on an event-by-event basis using the BigRIPS separator. Selected isotopes were focused onto the liquid hydrogen target of the MINOS device and gamma rays from the reactions were measured with the DALI2 array. The energy of the ions in the middle of the target was 213 MeV/u. Outgoing particles were identified using the ZeroDegree spectrometer. Here, we report on the current status of the data analysis and preliminary results for the proton inelastic scattering cross sections for both isotopes.

Abstract

The nuclear level density and the $\gamma$-ray strength function have been extracted for $^{89}$Y, using the Oslo Method on $^{89}$Y($p,p' \gamma$)$^{89}$Y coincidence data. The $\gamma$-ray strength function displays a low-energy enhancement consistent with previous observations in this mass region ($^{93-98}$Mo). Shell-model calculations give support that the observed enhancement is due to strong, low-energy $M1$ transitions at high excitation energies. The data were further used as input for calculations of the $^{88}$Sr($p,\gamma$)$^{89}$Y and $^{88}$Y($n,\gamma$)$^{89}$Y cross sections with the TALYS reaction code. Abstract

It is almost 80 years since Hans Bethe described the level density as a non-interacting gas of protons and neutrons. In all these years, experimental data were interpreted within this picture of a fermionic gas. However, the renewed interest of measuring level density using various techniques calls for a revision of this description. In particular, the wealth of nuclear level densities measured with the Oslo method favors the constant-temperature level density over the Fermi-gas picture. Abstract

The nuclear level densities of $^{194-196}$Pt and $^{197,198}$Au below the neutron separation energy have been measured using transfer and scattering reactions. All the level density distributions follow the constant-temperature description. Each group of isotopes is characterized by the same temperature above the energy threshold corresponding to the breaking of the first Cooper pair. A constant entropy excess $\Delta S=1.9$ and $1.1$ $k_B$ is observed in $^{195}$Pt and $^{198}$Au with respect to $^{196}$Pt and $^{197}$Au, respectively, giving information on the available single-particle level space for the last unpaired valence neutron. The breaking of nucleon Cooper pairs is revealed by sequential peaks in the microcanonical caloric curve.

Abstract

Experimental nuclear level densities at excitation energies below the neutron threshold follow closely a constant-temperature shape. This dependence is unexpected and poorly understood. In this work, a fundamental explanation of the observed constant-temperature behavior in atomic nuclei is presented for the first time. It is shown that the experimental data portray a first-order phase transition from a superfluid to an ideal gas of non-interacting quasiparticles. Even-even, odd-$A$, and odd-odd level densities show in detail the behavior of gap- and gapless superconductors also observed in solid-state physics. These results and analysis should find a direct application to mesoscopic systems such as superconducting clusters., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Our measurements of $^{195,196}$Pt $\gamma$-strength functions show a double-humped enhancement in the $E_{\gamma}= 4-8$ MeV region. For the first time, the detailed shape of these resonances is revealed for excitation energies in the quasicontinuum. We demonstrate that the corresponding neutron-capture cross sections and astrophysical reaction rates are increased by up to a factor of 2 when these newly observed pygmy resonances are included. These results lend credence to theoretical predictions of enhanced reaction rates due to such pygmy resonances and hence are important for a better understanding of r-process nucleosynthesis., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The $^{208}$Pb($p$,$n\gamma\bar p$) $^{207}$Pb reaction at a beam energy of 30 MeV has been used to excite the anti-analog of the giant dipole resonance (AGDR) and to measure its $\gamma$-decay to the isobaric analog state in coincidence with proton decay of IAS. The energy of the transition has also been calculated with the self-consistent relativistic random-phase approximation (RRPA), and found to be linearly correlated to the predicted value of the neutron-skin thickness ($\Delta R_{pn}$). By comparing the theoretical results with the measured transition energy, the value of 0.190 $\pm$ 0.028 fm has been determined for $\Delta R_{pn}$ of $^{208}$Pb, in agreement with previous experimental results. The AGDR excitation energy has also been used to calculate the symmetry energy at saturation ($J=32.7 \pm 0.6$ MeV) and the slope of the symmetry energy ($L=49.7 \pm 4.4$ MeV), resulting in more stringent constraints than most of the previous studies., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1205.2325

Abstract

The gamma-ray strength function in the quasi-continuum has been measured for 231-233Th, 232,233Pa and 237-239U using the Oslo method. All eight nuclei show a pronounced increase in gamma strength at omega_SR approx 2.4 MeV, which is interpreted as the low-energy M1 scissors resonance (SR). The total strength is found to be B_SR = 9-11 mu_N^2 when integrated over the 1 - 4 MeV gamma-energy region. The SR displays a double-hump structure that is theoretically not understood. Our results are compared with data from (gamma, gamma') experiments and theoretical sum-rule estimates for a nuclear rigid-body moment of inertia., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Particle-gamma coincidences have been measured to obtain gamma-ray spectra as a function of excitation energy for 231-233Th and 237-239U. The level densities, which were extracted using the Oslo method, show a constant temperature behavior. The isotopes display very similar temperatures in the quasi-continuum, however, the even-odd isotopes reveal a constant entropy increase Delta S compared to their even-even neighbors. The entropy excess depends on available orbitals for the last unpaired valence neutron of the heated nuclear system. Also, experimental microcanonical temperature and heat capacity have been extracted. Several poles in the heat capacity curve support the idea that an almost continuous melting of Cooper pairs is responsible for the constant-temperature behavior., Comment: 9 figures

Abstract

Imaging the inner part of large geological targets is an important issue in geosciences with various applications. Dif- ferent approaches already exist (e.g. gravimetry, electrical tomography) that give access to a wide range of informations but with identified limitations or drawbacks (e.g. intrinsic ambiguity of the inverse problem, time consuming deployment of sensors over large distances). Here we present an alternative and complementary tomography method based on the measurement of the cosmic muons flux attenuation through the geological structures. Abstract

A beam monitor detector prototype based on doped silica fibres coupled to optical fibres has been designed, constructed and tested, mainly for accelerators used in medical applications. Scintillation light produced by Ce and Sb doped silica fibres moving across the beam has been measured, giving information on beam position, shape and intensity. Mostly based on commercial components, the detector is easy to install, to operate and no electronic components are located near the beam. Tests have been performed with a 2 MeV proton pulsed beam at an average current of 0.8 {\mu}A. The response characteristics of Sb doped silica fibres have been studied for the first time.

Abstract

To study fundamental questions of hadron and nuclear physics in interactions of antiprotons with nucleons and nuclei, the universal PANDA detector will be built. Gluonic excitations, the physics of strange and charm quarks and nucleon structure studies will be performed with unprecedented accuracy thereby allowing high-precision tests of the strong interaction. The proposed PANDA detector is a state-of-the art internal target detector at the HESR at FAIR allowing the detection and identification of neutral and charged particles generated within the relevant angular and energy range. Abstract

Prompt and delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of the neutron-deficient, semi-magic isotope $^{187}$Pb has been performed using the recoil-decay and isomer-decay tagging techniques at the Argonne Gas-Filled Analyzer. A new 5.15(15)-μs isomeric state at only 308 keV above the spherical 3/2$^{−}$ ground state is identified and classified as a shape isomer. A strongly-coupled band is observed on top of the isomer, which is nearly identical to the one built on the prolate 7/2$^{−}$[514] Nilsson state in the isotone $^{185}$Hg. Based on this similarity and on the result of the potential-energy surface calculations, the new isomer in $^{187}$Pb is proposed to originate from the same configuration. The retarded character of the 308-keV (7/2$^{−}$)→3/2gs− transition with a deduced B(E2)=5.6(2)×10−4 W.u. can be well explained by the significant difference between the prolate parent and spherical daughter configurations, leading to the shape isomerism. The excitation energy of the isomer is surprisingly low, being roughly half of the excitation energies of the known 0$^{+}$ intruder bandheads in the neighboring $^{186,188}$Pb isotopes. The combined results of the present work and the previous α-decay and laser spectroscopy studies present evidence for triple shape coexistence at low energy in the negative-parity configurations of $^{187}$Pb, which is well reproduced by the potential-energy surface calculations.
