Milan is an increasingly safe city. Despite this, the insecurity perceived by citizens is growing. Particularly in social housing districts, squatting is considered by institutions, public opinion, but also by most regular residents, as one of the principle causes of urban insecurity. Based on ethnographic research conducted in Milan between 2015 and 2017, this article proposes an anthropological analysis of policies, norms, practices, and narratives related to the governance of housing illegality, showing how these representations contribute to producing a stigmatized, morally connoted, and criminalized image of squatters. In broader terms, starting with the ethnographic case of squatting, the article explores the anthropopoietic dynamics of social class construction and the centrality of moral categories in the production of urban inequality.

SUMMARYThe Opalinus Clay (OPA) is a clay-rich formation considered as a potential host rock for radioactive waste repositories and as a caprock for carbon storage in Switzerland. Its very low permeability (10−19 to 10−21 m2) makes it a potential sealing horizon, however the presence of faults that may be activated during the lifetime of a repository project can compromise the long-term hydrological confinement, and lead to mechanical instability. Here, we have performed laboratory experiments to test the effect of relative humidity (RH), grain size (g.s.) and normal stress on rate-and-state frictional properties and stability of fault laboratory analogues corresponding to powders of OPA shaly facies. The sifted host rock powders at different grain size fractions ( 35 MPa is dictated by a transition from localized to distributed deformation and (2) water vapour content does not affect the deformation mechanisms and dilation, whereas it decreases steady-state friction (μss), and enhances fault stability.

The Campi Flegrei caldera is in an unrest phase, manifested by increasing ground uplift, seismicity and hydrothermal activity since 2005. The seismicity mainly involves the first 3 km below the main hydrothermal site of Solfatara-Pisciarelli, where an intensifying heating and pressurization phase is inferred by gas geothermobarometers. Geodetic data inversions generally localize the deformation source around this depth in the central sector of the caldera. Two driving mechanisms of magmatic and non-magmatic unrest have been proposed. Recent studies have demonstrated that the main magma storage area is localized at a depth of ~8 km and is periodically recharged by a mafic deeper source. Magmatic fluid transfer from these reservoirs toward the surface can occur through small-volume shallow intrusions, and can occasionally culminate in an eruption. In this frame, investigating the physical properties of subsurface rocks can be valuable to define the source of the current and past unrest. In fact, they can largely affect local stress and strength, controlling volcano dynamics. We explored subsurface rocks of the Campi Flegrei caldera, extracted from 3-km-deep exploratory geothermal wells. X-ray microtomography investigations were combined with in-situ mechanical experiments (4D imaging at room temperature and dry conditions) to characterize rock properties and link them with 3D microstructural changes. The cores were collected according to the most representative stratigraphic levels and are dominated by tuffs alternating with minor lavas. The mineralogical assemblage reflects different depth-dependent T-P conditions ranging from argillic alteration (150 °C) to thermometamorphism (350 °C). Their tensile strength varies between 2 and 15 MPa and shows a general increase with depth, suggesting that a similar excess pressure is required within a potential shallow chamber to drive magma transfer. Combining this preliminary data with correspondent elastic properties, it can be inferred that a volume change between 0.001 and 1 km3 is sufficient to cause rupture conditions in a sill with radius between 0.5 and 5 km, respectively. These results are in agreement with magma volumes erupted during past eruptions at Campi Flegrei caldera, and particularly consistent with volcanological and petrological data of products from small-scale events.

Serpentinites are poly-mineralic rocks distributed almost ubiquitously in active tectonic regions worldwide. They are composed of rheologically weak (lizardite and crysotile) and strong (e.g., magnetite and pyroxene) phases. In particular, lizardite typically shows low friction coefficients and is supposed to localise deformation along weak shear zones characterized by aseismic behaviour. Major faults hosting serpentinite lithologies are characterised by seismic activity, tremors, and other slip modes. We advance the hypothesis that low strain domains, which are enriched in rheologically strong phases, can act as potential site of nucleation of unstable slip as the result of the velocity-dependent rheology of magnetite-rich serpentinites. Through an experimental and microstructural approach, we explore the different mechanisms whose interplay controls the complex behaviour of these lithologies.For this study we collected natural samples of lizardite-magnetite rich serpentinites within the low strain domains of the Elba Island ophiolites (Italy). Rocks were characterised, powdered, and deformed in a set of shear experiments at four different normal stresses (25, 50, 75 and 100 MPa) in the biaxial apparatus BRAVA. The experiments consist of an initial phase of sliding at 10 μm/s, a slide-hold-slide test, and two series of velocity stepping (sliding velocity from 0.1 to 300 μm/s). Fundamental parameters to quantify the frictional properties of serpentinites are individuated in the (a-b) value, the critical slip distance Dc, and the critical stiffness kc, which is derived by their combination.The material shows friction values of ~0.4 with velocity weakening behaviour and negative frictional healing. The module of the negative (a-b) parameter increases neatly with decreasing sliding velocity while Dc decreases, causing kc to rise. At low velocities (< 3 μm/s) sliding is unstable and the fault undergoes stick-slip behaviour. This is explained by the increase of the critical stiffness to values higher than the loading system stiffness. This systematic change of mechanical properties and fault slip behaviours with sliding velocity is interpreted to be the result of the time-dependent arrangement of grains in a heterogeneous experimental fault architecture.Back-scattered SEM images of the principal slip zones of recovered samples support this hypothesis. Elasto-frictional behaviour is controlled by the build-up of a partial (granular) load-bearing framework of strong magnetite grains, while visco-frictional rheology is controlled by the (phyllosilicatic) anastomosing and foliated lizardite matrix. At low sliding velocities, the granular phase interacts creating force chains thus promoting frictional instabilities. At higher velocities, dilation promotes the activity of throughgoing weaker phyllosilicate planes thus favouring stable slip.Our experiments shed light on the role of fault rock heterogeneity in nucleating dynamic slip in nature as well as in controlling the slip mode during earthquakes or slow-slip events in serpentinite terrains.

After many large earthquakes aftershocks activity can reach depths greater than the base of the seismogenic zone that is defined by background seismic activity. This observation is generally explained by strain rate induced embrittlement associated with the increase of post-mainshock strain rate, which favors a transition from ductile to brittle behavior. However, the underlying physical processes are not well understood. Here we integrate geological and geophysical data for the 2016–2017 Central Italy seismic sequence with laboratory experiments to provide a geological and physical interpretation for the post-mainshock transient deepening of the base of the seismogenic zone.The base of the seismogenic zone in the central-northern Apennines is set typically at 9-10 kilometers and corresponds to the top of the phyllitic basement. Structural studies on exhumed basement rocks highlight a heterogeneous basement fabric consisting of competent, 10 to 200 m wide, quartz-rich lenses surrounded by an interconnected and frictionally weak phyllosilicate-rich matrix. The matrix controls the overall rheology of the basement due to its interconnectivity, and promotes aseismic deformation because its rate-strengthening behavior.Following each major (Mw > 5.5) event of the 2016–2017 sequence, a dramatic and abrupt increase in seismic rate is observed below 10 km, hence within the basement. Here we document the presence of seismicity clusters made of more than 4 earthquakes and characterized by small magnitude (Mw < 2.5), small dimensions (< 500 meters), small temporal duration (< 14 days) and a swarm-like behavior. Furthermore, these clusters are often represented by multiple or repeating earthquakes with a cross correlation coefficient higher than 0.7 for all the three components. These observations suggest that the increase of shear stressing rate within the basement is responsible for deepening of seismicity. To further explore this idea, we performed laboratory experiments on rocks from exhumed outcrops of basement rocks. We found that shear stressing rate promotes accelerated creep on the phyllosilicate-rich matrix and dynamic instabilities on the quartz-rich gouge belonging to the lenses. Our integrated analysis suggests that the mainshocks of the 2016-2017 seismic sequence promoted an increase of shear stressing rate within the basement allowing the phyllosilicate-rich matrix to creep faster hence favoring the loading and the repeated failures of locked seismogenic patches represented by the quartz-rich lenses.

We present a novel apparatus designed to investigate the mechanical and chemical processes active during the nucleation and the subsequent propagation of a seismic rupture. The earthquake is experimentally represented by the sudden frictional sliding of two blocks caused by either: i) the passage of a rupture front from a nearby seismogenic source at prescribed slip velocity, or ii) by the sudden release of strain energy cumulated during the slow (tectonic) loading stage preceding the nucleation of seismic rupture. M.E.E.R.A. (Mechanics of Earthquake and Extended Rupture Apparatus) is a biaxial horizontal machine installed at the laboratories of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia of Rome (Italy) thanks to a grant funded by the Italian Dipartimento di Protezione Civile. MEERA works on two blocks sized 320x80x50 mm3 put in frictional contact under a normal load up to 30 MPa. Blocks can be either rocks or analogue materials. The normal load and the shear stress are supplied by 6 hydraulic piston cylinders. One piston applies the tangential force up to 150 kN and up to 40 mm/s of slip rate. The other 5 cylinders modulate the normal force on the 320 x 50 mm2 contact surface. The 6 pistons are mounted on a rigid stainless-steel vessel that can be closed by a top built in plexiglass, which enables the environmental chamber for fluid confinement. The plexiglass top resists up to 6 MPa of fluid pressure exerted and controlled by using two ISCO pumps. MEERA is designed following the outline described in McLaskey and Yamashita (2017) and introduces three novelties: the control in displacement and displacement rate of the tangential piston up to 1kS/s; the environmental chamber; the rigid stainless-steel frame. MEERA is designed to study how the tectonic loading of a frictional interface composed of natural rocks determine the stress state and shear stress evolution governing seismogenic processes. To this end, the simulated fault in MEERA is equipped with acoustic sensors, strain gauges, optical fibers and high velocity cameras to measure and constrain rupture nucleation processes and earthquake source parameters, including directivity and rupture velocity, the dynamics of seismic ruptures and the earthquake energy budget at different scales. We aim at comparing the laboratory observations and the signals collected by MEERA with those collected by the newly developed on-fault observatory of the ERC FEAR project in the Bedretto Underground Laboratory for Geosciences and Geoenergies (BULGG, Swiss Alps) to provide novel insights in earthquake mechanics.

Faults can be reactivated by fluid injection and pore pressure increase in the rock volumes surrounding the fault zone. Induced earthquakes represent only one of the possible responses of active faults to pore pressure perturbations, since other strain transients characterize the spectrum of fault-slip behavior. A series of fluid injection experiments, designed and undertaken in the framework of the ERC Fault Activation and Earthquake Ruptures (FEAR) project, will be conducted in the Bedretto Underground Laboratory for Geosciences and Geoenergies (BULGG, Switzerland) to understand fault reactivation processes on a target well-identified fault zone. Small and accessible faults are to be instrumented to monitor deformation and seismicity during both fluid injection and fault reactivation.The mineralogical, microstructural, and hydraulic properties of the target fault zone are investigated to characterize the fault-slip behavior. Characterization of the frictional response is achieved through a suite of laboratory rock-deformation experiments using both double-direct and rotary experimental apparatuses. Fault stimulation by fluid pressurization was also simulated in laboratory by using an injection protocol reliable for the in-situ hydraulic stimulation and consisting of stepwise pore fluid pressure increase. Experiments undertaken at low velocity with the double-direct apparatus (BRAVA) suggest that the selected fault, composed of mixed phyllosilicate-granular materials, is frictionally stable but yet can be dynamically reactivated by hydraulic stimulation.Experiments were also performed on the fault gouge from the target fault with the rotary experimental apparatus (SHIVA). First, we apply half of the stresses measured at depth in the underground laboratory to accomplish the operating capability of the apparatus: 12 MPa normal stress, 7.5 MPa confining pressure and 1.5 MPa pore fluid pressure. Second, we imposed a slip rate of 10-5 m/s for 0.01 m to have an equally compacted and textured layer. Third, we applied a shear stress so that an equivalent slip tendency of 0.35 is achieved (ca. 2.7 MPa), and kept it constant. We then increased stepwise the pore fluid pressure by 0.1 MPa every 150 s. This allows the spontaneous nucleation of slip events. After fault reactivation, the maximum slip velocity was set to 0.1 m/s. The fluid injection sequence results in a first reactivation (R1). Thanks to the nominally infinite slip available in SHIVA we run a second injection sequence up to a reactivation (R2).Our experiments show two different styles of reactivation between R1 and R2. R1 reactivation is abrupt, with slip rate accelerating up to 0.1 m/s. Instead, R2 has a stage in which slip rate oscillates (0.5-3 mm/s) just before the last step of pore pressure increase leads to acceleration to 0.1 m/s. This would suggest a role for the shear fabric developed during the first reactivation, in which extensive grain size reduction might have led to stiffening of the fault, responsible of the oscillatory slip. This frictional behavior suggests the importance of considering the effect of texture development during multiple cycles of seismic slip. The generalization of our data and observations will contribute to shed light on the mechanics of faults and induced earthquakes by fluid pressure increase.

This introductory essay proposes a reflection that discusses, reframes, and presents the thematic section hosted in this volume, that investigates houses at the intersection between recent trends in the anthropology of the house, the study of material culture, and the investigation of contemporary socio-cultural transformations. In the first paragraph, we contextualize the growing contemporary interest in houses. In the second, following Carsten, we sustain the idea that houses themselves should be placed at the heart of a research agenda, we present the approach proposed in this thematic section, we clarify what are houses and what distinguishes them in relation to homes and households and how, in the history of anthropology, these ���objects��� have been investigated. In the third paragraph, reviewing the main approaches to the theme, we delve into the notion of soci��t�� �� maisons elaborated by L��vi-Strauss. The fourth paragraph places the concreteness of houses back at the centre of the analysis, where normative and material forms are mediated, reproduced, and even contested or negotiated. In the last, we present the three articles hosted in this thematic section ��� and the afterword discussing them ��� that explore how houses and their materiality modify the world and deal with its transformations., Anuac, Vol 10 No 2 (2021)

Faults weaken during the propagation of earthquakes due to the onset of thermally-activated mechanisms, which vary depending on the rock type. Recent experimental work suggests that carbonate-hosted faults are lubricated by viscous flow in nano-granular aggregates having ultramylonitic textures. However, their frail nature has often hindered unbiased characterisation of the textures and deformation mechanisms operating at such extreme conditions (strain rates as high as 104), which remain so far poorly investigated and understood. We explore the formation, evolution and deformation mechanisms of coseismic ultramylonites in carbonate-hosted faults generated during high velocity (1.4 m s−1), displacement-controlled shear experiments in a rotary apparatus. Microstructures were analysed using integrated SEM and TEM imaging while detailed crystallographic fabrics were investigated using the electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) technique. Mechanical data show that the strength of the experimental fault decays dynamically with slip, according to a characteristic four stage evolution; each stage is associated with characteristic textures. Microstructural observations show that brittle processes dominate when the fault is strong (friction coefficients >0.6). Cataclasis, aided by twinning and crystal plasticity, operates forming an extremely comminuted shear band (mean grain size ∼200 nm). As the fault starts weakening, shear localises within a well-defined principal slip zone. Here, thermally-activated grain size sensitive (GSS) and insensitive (GSI) creep mechanisms compete with brittle processes in controlling fault strength. GSI mechanisms produce strong monoclinic crystallographic preferred orientations in the slip zone, while textures and crystallographic orientations in adjacent locations do not evolve from the previous deformation stage. By the end of the transient weakening stage, the slip zone has reached a steady state thickness (30 μm) and shows a nanogranular ultramylonitic texture. The intensity of the crystallographic preferred orientation in the coseismic ultramylonite is reduced compared to the previous stage, due to grainsize sensitive creep mechanisms becoming gradually more dominant. As the experimental fault re-strengthens, upon deceleration to arrest, the ultramylonite may be partially reworked by brittle deformation. Our findings show that the crystallographic orientations of transient microstructures are preserved in the slip zone of coseismic ultramylonites and in narrow, adjacent deactivated layers, where mirror-like surfaces are located. This shows that EBSD techniques can usefully be employed to determine the deformation mechanisms of coseismic ultramylonites and their evolution during earthquake slip in both experimental and, potentially, natural faults.

International audience; Despite the hazard posed by earthquakes, we still lack fundamental understanding of the processes that control fault lubrication behind a propagating rupture front and enhance ground acceleration. Laboratory experiments show that fault materials dramatically weaken when sheared at seismic velocities (>0.1 m s−1). Several mechanisms, triggered by shear heating, have been proposed to explain the coseismic weakening of faults, but none of these mechanisms can account for experimental and seismological evidence of weakening. Here we show that, in laboratory experiments, weakening correlates with local temperatures attained during seismic slip in simulated faults for diverse rock-forming minerals. The fault strength evolves according to a simple, material-dependent Arrhenius-type law. Microstructures support this observation by showing the development of a principal slip zone with textures typical of sub-solidus viscous flow. We show evidence that viscous deformation (at either sub- or super-solidus temperatures) is an important, widespread and quantifiable coseismic lubrication process. The operation of these highly effective fault lubrication processes means that more energy is then available for rupture propagation and the radiation of hazardous seismic waves.

This article describes the counter-insurrectional strategies adopted by Portuguese authorities to annihilate some resistance practices emerged during the implementation phase of a government rehousing programme in an informal neighborhood situated in the area of Lisbon, Portugal. The resettlement plan offered the opportunity to the local municipalities of succeeding in eliminating the “illegal” neighborhoods and providing to the relocation of the residents in social houses. Against the implementation, a local resistance was organized by a ‘right to the city’ collective; furthermore, informal and alternative forms of opposition arose in the neighborhood. Nevertheless, the author shows that those forms of resistance failed and local authorities managed to destroy these practices, mainly thanks to four different strategies adopted: family and community fragmentation; control of information; tactical destruction of the neighborhood; use of violence. Through an anthropological analysis of these complex experiences, the author intends to focus on the social conflict for the “right to housing” in contemporary Portugal.

The Dossier «Vulnerability and Housing Policies. Anthropological insights across Europe» is the result of a panel organized by the editors at the 15th EASA Biennial Conference hosted by Stockholm University in August 2018. In this context, we proposed to explore ethnographically housing policies as peculiar and paradigmatic forms of contemporary «regimes of mobility». Coherently to the panel target, the main theme of this Dossier is the anthropological analysis of the production of social and political vulnerability in Europe through housing policies. In particular, the ethnographies hosted in this Dossier explore the dense intersection between different configurations of social and political action, such as housing rights, residents’ responses to public policies, vulnerability, real estate politics, migration, forced evictions, infrastructures. It is impossible to understand contemporary Europe, we argue, without understanding what is going on with housing policies. International audience; Several thermally activated mechanisms have been proposed to explain the dynamic weakening of faults at fast, seismic slip rates v > 0.1 m s-1. Nevertheless, direct constraints from microstructural observations on the operation of such weakening mechanisms are still lacking for most rock forming minerals. This includes olivine, a very refractory mineral relevant for seismic activity occurring in peridotite massifs. Here, we report mechanical data and microstructures of olivine aggregates deformed in a rotary shear apparatus at slip rates from 10-2 m s-1 to 1 m s-1. A number of 34 shear deformation experiments were performed under axial stresses of 20 MPa and at room temperature. Samples are composed of either synthetic iron-free nanocrystalline forsterite powder (initial grain size = 0.07 µm) or natural iron-bearing olivine powder from San Carlos or San Bernardino (Fo91, Arizona, USA; initial grain size = 70 ± 2 µm). Shear deformation lasts from a few seconds up to 5 minutes and ends after 0.03 to 3 m of slip. Independently of the initial grain size or composition, friction coefficients decrease from peak values of 0.8 to values below 0.4, after only 0.1 m of slip. The recovered samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. For all samples, before the onset of dynamic weakening, the deformation localizes in a principal shear zone, well-marked in the natural olivine aggregates by a rapid decrease of grain size down to < 1.7 µm. Variations in texture, fractured grains and the formation of a fine-grained matrix support cataclastic flow at an early stage of deformation, responsible for the foremost grain size reduction. The samples display well-defined zones with partially sintered microstructure, and shape preferred orientation. The initial texture of the cold-pressed starting material is rapidly reduced to a near random distribution after only 0.03 m of slip. All crystal preferred orientations (CPO) remain weak, with a J-index ≲ 2. Based on the microstructures, the dominant deformation mechanism may be enhanced effective diffusion (by surface and grain boundary diffusion) causing mechanical weakening and a viscous behavior, which is then temperature-dependent under sub-solidus conditions. We find no microstructural evidence for frictional melting, flash heating or thermal decomposition. Our results advocate that dynamic weakening of faults is independent of initial grain size, and can be achieved after displacements as low as 0.1 m without production of frictionally induced-melt.

Monazite-(Ce) and xenotime-(Y) from tertiary pegmatites of the central Alps (Italy and Switzerland) were studied by EMPA and SCXRD analytical methods. The REE-phosphate minerals analyzed are from LCT and NYF pegmatite dikes of the Central Alps, which includes three main areas: Vigezzo (LCT and NYF from the Vigezzo valley), Bodengo (NYF from the Leggia valley and LCT from the Cama valley), and Codera (LCT from Codera and Chiavenna valleys and Alpe Rossaccio). SEM-BSE images of monazite-(Ce) show primary growth zoning, sector zoning, and patchy zoning. SEM-BSE images of xenotime-(Y) show faint patchy-type zoning and spongiform texture. Both REE-phosphates evidence secondary mineral replacements that include thorianite, thorite, and uraninite. EMPA compositions show that the monazite-(Ce) is characterized by variable amounts of huttonite (ThSiO 4 ) and cheralite [Ca(Th,U)(PO 4 )] molecules. SCXRD analyses shows that the unit-cell volume of monazite-(Ce) correlates with its chemical composition; the b cell parameter shows an evident relationship with the huttonite molecule. The unit-cell volume of xenotime-(Y) is well correlated to its chemical composition. Xenotime-(Y) related to the NYF family shows a significant increase in yttrium and a lower U + HREE content. The Tertiary pegmatite field of the central Alps is related to the Masino-Bregaglia intrusion, the San Fedelino granite, and younger magmatic pulses generated by the migration of the metamorphic thermal Lepontine Dome towards the west. The presence of poikiloblastic thorite, thorianite, and uraninite in monazite and xenotime can be induced to form from alkali-bearing fluids via coupled dissolution–reprecipitation, under moderate to high-grade and post-peak Alpine metamorphic conditions.

A total of 137 patients with a diagnosis of chronic bacterial prostatitis (CBP) were subjected to combination pharmacological therapy with antibacterial agents (ciprofloxacin/azithromycin), alpha-blockers (alfuzosin) and Serenoa repens extracts. Of those, 88 patients (64.2%) showed microbiological eradication at the completion of a 6-week cycle of therapy. Of the remaining 49 patients showing persistence of the causative organism(s) or reinfection at the end of treatment, 36 completed a second cycle of combination therapy for 6 weeks: 27 patients (75%) showed eradication of the causative organism, whereas in nine cases persistence or reinfection was observed. The cumulative eradication rate of the present study – calculated on a total of 137 enrolled patients – is 83.9%. Clinical examination showed a marked improvement of signs and symptoms linked to prostatitis. Remarkably, combination therapy could attenuate CBP symptoms prior to microbiological eradication, thus rapidly decreasing the impact of the disease on the quality of life of patients. Clinical remission was extended throughout a follow-up period of 30 months for 94% of patients, whereas seven patients showed relapse of the disease. In summary, our results indicate that about 20% of patients enrolled in this study, who were refractory to a protocol of 6-week combination therapy, could be ‘rescued’ by a second cycle of treatment. Clinical follow-up data show that combination therapy could ensure extended relief from CBP symptoms, and a general improvement in quality of life.
