Abstract

The rhizosphere is one of the most important reservoirs of microorganisms. Because of the microbial metabolic activities, these can be used for various biotechnological, agricultural and environmental purposes. In this study we evaluated five genetically related bacterial strains; Pseudomonas aeruginosa N7B1 (MG457074), Pseudomonas sp. (MG457075), Pseudomonas sp., Bf1 (MG457076) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa F23 (MG457077), isolated from Jatropha curcas rhizosphere, capable of growing and degradating benzene and phenanthrene. The hydrocarbon degradation by these strains was quantified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrophotometry. The Pseudomonas aeruginosa N7B1 strain removed 84% of phenanthrene and 45% of benzene in a seven-day period, while the other strains showed a lower hydrocarbon degradation capacity. Another biotechno-logical feature of these strains is maize growth promotion, in a substrate enriched with 0.5% of phenanthrene and 1.0% of benzene. Pseudomonas aeruginosa N7B1 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa F23 showed an increase in root and shoot fresh and dry weight, plant height and root length variables. These results open the possible use of these strains as bioinoculants to promote the growth of maize plants in phenanthrene and benzene polluted soils.

Abstract

Sanitary landfill leachate (SLL) is a mixture of highly toxic and recalcitrant pollutants that threatens the water quality of the Yucatán Peninsula karst aquifer, one of the most extensive aquifers on the planet. To reduce the adverse environmental impacts of this wastewater, a triple-stage Fenton process (FP) was applied in an old SLL. Removal efficiencies were evaluated in terms of physicochemical variables, metal(oid)s concentrations, mass spectrometric identification of organic compounds and Daphnia magna acute toxicity test. The triple-stage FP achieved an 88% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal, representing an improvement of 13% compared to FP performed in a single stage. Further, metal(oid)s such as aluminum, arsenic, chromium, nickel and zinc as well as organic compounds were substantially reduced. With respect to acute toxicity, the treatment produced a 64% reduction. Thus, this treatment system seems to be an effective option to reduce the dangerous level of SLL.

Abstract

This article discusses the adsorption of four organophosphorus pesticides-diazinon, dimethoate, methyl parathion, and sulfotep-in soil samples from four sites-Komchen, Xcanatun, Chablekal and Mococha- in the northwest of Yucatan, Mexico. These pesticides have been detected in groundwater at concentrations greater than 5 (μg/L) during recent monitoring campaigns in the study area. In this region, groundwater contamination is exacerbated by its karst aquifer, which is susceptible to contamination and is considered very vulnerable. The experimental work was carried out using the batch equilibrium technique. Pesticide analyses by solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography were performed. The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed by Henry, Langmuir and Freundlich models. The results indicate that the Freundlich model provides the best correlation of the experimental data. Freundlich adsorption coefficients Kf were in the range of 1.62-2.35 for sulfotep, 2.43 to 3.25 for dimethoate, from 5.54 to 9.27 for methyl parathion, and 3.22 to 5.17 for diazinon. Freundlich adsorption coefficients were normalized to the content of organic carbon in the soil to estimate the sorption coefficient of organic carbon (KOC). KOC values were in the range of 9.45-71.80, indicated that four pesticides have low adsorption on the four studied soils, which represents a high risk of contamination to the aquifer.

34. ENHANCED REMOVAL OF ORGANIC MATTER AND NUTRIENTS BY SEQUENTIAL BATCH REACTORS.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to improve the removal of organic matter and nutrients from wastewater from pig farms in a combined batch reactor performed as anaerobic-aerobic sequential. For this purpose, it was suggested to include recirculation cycles of wastewater in a sequentially pulsed manner in the anaerobic treatment followed by intermittent aeration in the aerobic-anoxic treatment. This novelty implemented in both sequential reactors was studied under pilot scale conditions. The process of pulsed intermittent recirculation allowed better contact between the microorganisms and organic matter, and intermittent aeration improved the removal of nutrients, primarily nitrogen (nitrification and denitrification), total phosphorous and organic matter. The best configuration tested for the combined system was the one consisting of pulsed intermittent recirculation with 1 hour of recirculation and 3 hours rest in the anaerobic step and 2 hours of aeration and 1 hour without aeration cycle in the aerobic step. The removals achieved were 98 ± 1% of total organic matter, 86 ± 5% of soluble organic matter, 96 ± 1% of total phosphorus and 55 ± 18% of total nitrogen. Hence, it was demonstrated that a combined system with pulsed intermittent recirculation in the anaerobic stage and intermittent aeration in the aerobic stage could enhance the overall treatment of swine wastewater.
