Abstract The green synthesis of Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) has shown numerous advantages over conventional physical and chemical synthesis methods as these methods non-ecofriendly and uses toxic chemicals and complicated equipments. In present study, Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) were created using simple, sustainable, eco-friendly and green chemistry protocol. The roots of novel medicinal plant Sageretia thea was used as a bio-template for the preparation of IONPs. Further, the synthesis of IONPs was confirmed using different analytical tools like UV-Vis, FT-IR, XRD, EDX, and SEM. The average sizes of (NPs) were found to be 16.04 nm. Further, asynthesized IONPs were evaluated for several biological potentials including antibacterial, antifungal Anti-radical potentials (DPPH) and cytotoxicity assays. Antibacterial potencies were investigated using bacterial strains (in the concentration range of 1000–31.25 µg/mL) revealing significant antibacterial potentials. ABA and SAU was reported to be least susceptible while KPN was observed to be most susceptible strain in bactericidal studies. Further, different fungal strains were used to investigate the antifungal potentials of IONPs (in the concentration range of 1000–31.25 µg/mL) and revealed strong antifungal potencies against different pathogenic strains. Furthermore, MRA, FA and ANI were most susceptible and ABA was least susceptible in fungicidal examination. Significant cytotoxicity potential was examined using brine shrimps cytotoxicity assay, thus revealing the cytotoxic potential of asynthesized IONPs. The IC50 for S. thea based IONPs was recorded as 33.85 µg/mL. Strong anti-radical potentials (DPPH) assay was performed to evaluate the ROS scavenging potential of S.T@IONPs. The highest scavenging potential was noted as 78.06%, TRP as 81.92% and TAC as 84% on maximum concentration of 200 µg/mL. In summary, our experimental results concluded, that asynthesized IONPs have strong antibacterial, antifungal, DPPH scavenging and cytotoxic potentials and can be used in different biological applications. In nutshell, our as-prepared nanoparticles have shown potential bioactivities and we recommend, different other in vitro and in vivo biological and bioactivities to further analyze the biological potentials.

Abstract Background Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is a type of blood cancer that begins in the hematopoietic stem cells. It is primarily characterized by a specific chromosomal aberration, the Philadelphia chromosome. While the fusion gene is a major contributor to CML, several other genes including ADGRE2, that are reported as highly expressed in hematopoietic stem cells and could be utilized as a therapeutic marker in leukemic patients are implicated in the disease’s progression. Until recently, little research had been conducted to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with CML. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the influence of non-synonymous variants on the structure and function of the gene encoding adhesion G protein-coupled receptor E2, ADGRE2, and to evaluate their association with CML and its clinical and pathological characteristics. Methods Non-synonymous SNPs of ADGRE2 were retrieved from the ENSEMBL, COSMIC, and gnomAD genome browsers, and the pathogenicity of deleterious variants was assessed using several established computational tools, including SIFT, CADD, REVEL, PolyPhen, and MetaLR. Results Various in silico analyses explored the impact of damaging SNP on the function, stability, and structure of EGF-like modules containing mucin-like hormone receptor-like2 (EMR2) protein encoded by the ADGRE2 gene. Genotype analysis was performed on collected blood samples, revealing that altered genotype TT of variant rs765071211 (C/T) was associated significantly with CML patients compared to the control. Further in vitro and in vivo analyses suggest that this SNP holds potential for clinical translation.

Abstract Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a global health concern. Due to late diagnosis and limited therapeutic strategies, HCC based mortality rate is exponentially increasing globally. Genetic predisposition is a non-avoidable intrinsic factor that could alter the genome sequence, ultimately leading to HCC. Protein kinase C eta (PKCη) is involved in key physiological roles, hence alteration in PKCη could aid in cancer progression. Research indicates association between non-synonymous (ns) SNPs and HCC onset. However, effect of nsSNP variants of PKCη on HCC development has not been explored yet. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the association between pathogenic nsSNPs of PKCη with HCC. Methods Non-synonymous (missense) variants of PKCη were obtained from Ensembl genome browser. These variants were filtered out to obtain pathogenic nsSNPs of PKCη. Genotyping of nsSNPs was done through Tetra ARMS PCR. For that, blood samples of 348 HCC patients and 337 controls were collected. The clinical factors that influence HCC were studied. Abstract Drought poses a significant ecological threat that limits the production of crops worldwide. The objective of this study to examine the impact of soil applied biochar (BC) and peatmoss (PM) on the morpho-biochemical and quality traits of tobacco plants under drought conditions. In the present experiment work, a pot trial was conducted with two levels of drought severity (~ well-watered 75 ± 5% field capacity) and severe drought stress (~ 35 ± 5% field capacity), two levels of peatmoss (PM) @ 5% [PM+ (with peatmoss) and PM- (without peatmoss)] and three levels of rice straw biochar (BC0 = no biochar; BC1 = 150 mg kg− 1; and BC2 = 300 mg kg− 1 of soil) in tobacco plants. The results indicate that drought conditions significantly impacted the performance of tobacco plants. However, the combined approach of BC and PM significantly improved the growth, biomass, and total chlorophyll content (27.94%) and carotenoids (32.00%) of tobacco. This study further revealed that the drought conditions decreased the production of lipid peroxidation and proline accumulation. But the synergistic approach of BC and PM application increased soluble sugars (17.63 and 12.20%), soluble protein (31.16 and 15.88%), decreased the proline accumulation (13.92 and 9.03%), and MDA content (16.40 and 8.62%) under control and drought stressed conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the combined approach of BC and PM also improved the leaf potassium content (19.02%) by limiting the chloride ions (33.33%) under drought stressed conditions. Altogether, the balanced application of PM and BC has significant potential as an effective approach and sustainable method to increase the tolerance of tobacco plants subjected to drought conditions. This research uniquely highlights the combined potential of PM and BC as an eco-friendly strategy to enhance plant resilience under drought conditions, offering new insights into sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract Zinc oxide nanoparticles have wide range biological, biomedical and environmental applications. However, traditional nanofabrication of ZnONPs uses various toxic chemicals and organic solvents which limit their bio-applications. To overcome this hurdle, Bauhinia variegata derived buds extract was utilized to fabricate ZnONPs. The greenly generated ZnONPs were successfully prepared and extensively characterized using different analytical tools and the average crystalline size was calculated as 25.47 nm. Further, bioengineered ZnONPs were explored for multiple biological activities that revealed excellent therapeutic potentials. The antibacterial potential was determined using different bacterial strains. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC: 137.5 µg/mL) was reported to be the most resistant variant while Bacillus subtilis (MIC: 34.38 µg/mL) was observed to be most susceptible bacterial strain. DPPH radical scavenging potential was measured to determine the antioxidant capacity of ZnONPs and the highest scavenging potential was observed as 82% at highest of 300 µg/mL. The fungicidal effect of green ZnONPs in comparison with Amphotericin B was assessed against five selected pathogenic fungal strains. The results revealed, Fusarium solani (MIC: 46.875 µg/mL) was least resistant and Aspergillus flavus (MIC: 187.5 µg/mL) was most resistant in fungicidal examination. Cytotoxicity potential of B.V@ZnONPs was analyzed against newly hatched nauplii of brine shrimps. The results for greenly produced ZnONPs was recorded as 39.78 µg/mL while 3.006 µg/mL was reported for positive control vincristine sulphate. The results confirmed the category of general cytotoxic for greenly synthesized nano sized B.V@ZnONPs.

The Ciprofloxacin (CIP) toxicity and salinity stress in agricultural soils cause risk to environmental and food safety. Consequently, it is essential to devise or use more effective techniques for mitigating salinity and ciprofloxacin-induced stress in soil. This study includes the nZVI-loaded biochar synthesis, integrating the unique characteristics of raw biochar with nZVI. The present study examined the impact of raw and nZVI-loaded biochar on soil quality and the mitigation of salinity stress and Ciprofloxacin toxicity in wheat plants. The results showed that the application of nZVI-loaded biochar treatments led to substantial enhancement in shoot biomass, root biomass, grain biomass, and spike biomass by 152.1, 54.3 %, 59.8 %, and 151 %, respectively compared to control treatment. The treatment with nZVI-loaded biochar significantly increased the rates of photosynthesis and transpiration, as well as the conductance of stomata. It also resulted in higher levels of intercellular CO2, photosynthetic pigments, and water use efficiency with increases of 49 %, 59 %, 57 %, 37 %, 40 %, and 95 %, respectively. The nZVI-loaded biochar significantly decreased electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde (MDA), and hydrogen peroxide levels compared to the NaCl treatment alone. It also enhanced the activities of enzymatic antioxidants such as peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). The non-enzymatic antioxidants including total soluble sugars (TSS), flavonoids, total soluble proteins (TSP), phenolics, ascorbic acid, anthocyanin, proline, and glycine betaine significantly influenced by the nZVI-loaded biochar. The nZVI-loaded biochar effectively alleviates the stress of soils that are contaminated with hazardous amounts of Ciprofloxacin while improving the soil and plant health.

Abstract Large amount of wastes are burnt or left to decompose on site or at landfills where they cause air pollution and nutrient leaching to groundwater. Waste management strategies that return these food wastes to agricultural soils recover the carbon and nutrients that would otherwise have been lost, enrich soils and improve crop productivity. The incorporation of liming materials can neutralize the protons released, hence reducing soil acidity and its adverse impacts to the soil environment, food security, and human health. Biochar derived from organic residues is becoming a source of carbon input to soil and provides multifunctional values. Biochar can be alkaline in nature, with the level of alkalinity dependent upon the feedstock and processing conditions. This study conducted a characterization of biochar derived from the pyrolysis process of eggplant and Acacia nilotica bark at temperatures of 300 °C and 600 °C. An analysis was conducted on the biochar kinds to determine their pH, phosphorus (P), as well as other elemental composition. The proximate analysis was conducted by the ASTM standard 1762-84, while the surface morphological features were measured using a scanning electron microscope. The biochar derived from Acacia nilotica bark exhibited a greater yield and higher level of fixed carbon while possessing a lower content of ash and volatile components compared to biochar derived from eggplant. The eggplant biochar exhibits a higher liming ability at 600 °C compared to the acacia nilotica bark-derived biochar. The calcium carbonate equivalent, pH, potassium (K), and phosphorus (P) levels in eggplant biochars increased as the pyrolysis temperature increased. The results suggest that biochar derived from eggplant could be a beneficial resource for storing carbon in the soil, as well as for addressing soil acidity and enhancing nutrients availability, particularly potassium and phosphorus in acidic soils.

Abstract The use of saline water under drought conditions is critical for sustainable agricultural development in arid regions. Biochar is used as a soil amendment to enhance soil properties such as water-holding capacity and the source of nutrition elements of plants. Thus, the research was carried out to assess the impact of biochar treatment on the morphological and physiological characteristics and production of Solanum lycopersicum in greenhouses exposed to drought and saline stresses. The study was structured as a three-factorial in split-split-plot design. There were 16 treatments across three variables: (i) water quality, with freshwater and saline water, with electrical conductivities of 0.9 and 2.4 dS m− 1, respectively; (ii) irrigation level, with 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% of total evapotranspiration (ETC); (iii) and biochar application, with the addition of biochar at a 3% dosage by (w/w) (BC3%), and a control (BC0%). The findings demonstrated that salt and water deficiency hurt physiological, morphological, and yield characteristics. Conversely, the biochar addition enhanced all characteristics. Growth-related parameters, such as plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, and dry and wet weight, and leaf gas exchange attributes, such rate of transpiration and photosynthesis, conductivity, as well as leaf relative water content were decreased by drought and salt stresses, especially when the irrigation was 60% ETc or 40% ETc. The biochar addition resulted in a substantial enhancement in vegetative growth-related parameters, physiological characteristics, efficiency of water use, yield, as well as reduced proline levels. Tomato yield enhanced by 4%, 16%, 8%, and 3% when irrigation with freshwater at different levels of water deficit (100% ETc, 80% ETc, 60% ETc, and 40% ETc) than control (BC0%). Overall, the use of biochar (3%) combined with freshwater shows the potential to enhance morpho-physiological characteristics, support the development of tomato plants, and improve yield with higher WUE in semi-arid and arid areas.

Abstract Biochar is a promising solution to alleviate the negative impacts of salinity stress on agricultural production. Biochar derived from food waste effect was investigated on three plant species, Medicago sativa, Amaranthus caudatus, and Zea mays, under saline environments. The results showed that biochar improved significantly the height by 30%, fresh weight of shoot by 35% and root by 45% of all three species compared to control (saline soil without biochar adding), as well as enhanced their photosynthetic pigments and enzyme activities in soil. This positive effect varied significantly between the 3 plants highlighting the importance of the plant-biochar interactions. Thus, the application of biochar is a promising solution to enhance the growth, root morphology, and physiological characteristics of plants under salt-induced stress.

Abstract Understanding the impact of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and carbon stock is crucial for effective climate change assessment and agroecosystem management. However, little is known about the effects of organic amendments on GHG emissions and dynamic changes in carbon stocks in salt-affected soils. We conducted a pot experiment with four treatments including control (only fertilizers addition), biochar, vermicompost, and compost on non-saline and salt-affected soils, with the application on a carbon equivalent basis under wheat crop production. Our results revealed that the addition of vermicompost significantly increased soil organic carbon content by 18% in non-saline soil and 52% in salt-affected soil compared to the control leading to improvements in crop productivity i.e., plant dry biomass production by 57% in non-saline soil with vermicompost, while 56% with the same treatment in salt-affected soil. The grain yield was also noted 44 and 50% more with vermicompost treatment in non-saline and salt-affected soil, respectively. Chlorophyll contents were observed maximum with vermicompost in non-saline (24%), and salt-affected soils (22%) with same treatments. Photosynthetic rate (47% and 53%), stomatal conductance (60% and 12%), and relative water contents (38% and 27%) were also noted maximum with the same treatment in non-saline and salt-affected soils, respectively. However, the highest carbon dioxide emissions were observed in vermicompost- and compost-treated soils, leading to an increase in emissions of 46% in non-saline soil and 74% in salt-affected soil compared to the control. The compost treatment resulted in the highest nitrous oxide emissions, with an increase of 57% in non-saline soil and 62% in salt-affected soil compared to the control. In saline and non-saline soils treated with vermicompost, the global warming potential was recorded as 267% and 81% more than the control, respectively. All treatments, except biochar in non-saline soil, showed increased net GHG emissions due to organic amendment application. However, biochar reduced net emissions by 12% in non-saline soil. The application of organic amendments increased soil organic carbon content and crop yield in both non-saline and salt-affected soils. In conclusion, biochar is most effective among all tested organic amendments at increasing soil organic carbon content in both non-saline and salt-affected soils, which could have potential benefits for soil health and crop production.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the haematological parameters in children affected by extended drug-resistant salmonella typhi (XDR S. typhi) infections in a Tertiary care hospital. METHODOLOGY: This Descriptive Cross-Sectional study was carried out at the Department of Haematology at PNS SHIFA Hospital, Karachi, from November 2021 to October 2022. Seventy children with XDR S. Typhi on blood culture were selected using a consecutive sampling technique. The study focused on haematological parameters, i.e., haemoglobin (Hb), WBC count, and platelet count. Descriptive statistics were expressed as mean ±SD, and the Chi-square test was applied. A p-value ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Out of the total of 70 children (under 12 years of age) included in the study, 41 (58.6%) were male and 29 (41.4%) were female. The mean age was 8.17±2.92 years. Anaemia was observed in 51% percent of cases. Leucopenia and thrombocytopenia were noted in 44% and 54% of cases. Seventeen children had bicytopenia, while pancytopenia was seen in only two children. CONCLUSION: XDR S. Typhi infection causes significant cytopenias. Therefore, patients with a history of sustained fever with cytopenias should be worked up for possible XDR S. Typhi infection.

Abstract The pollution of soil and aquatic systems by inorganic and organic chemicals has become a global concern. Economical, eco-friendly, and sustainable solutions are direly required to alleviate the deleterious effects of these chemicals to ensure human well-being and environmental sustainability. In recent decades, biochar has emerged as an efficient material encompassing huge potential to decontaminate a wide range of pollutants from soil and aquatic systems. However, the application of raw biochars for pollutant remediation is confronting a major challenge of not getting the desired decontamination results due to its specific properties. Thus, multiple functionalizing/modification techniques have been introduced to alter the physicochemical and molecular attributes of biochars to increase their efficacy in environmental remediation. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in developing multiple functionalized/modified biochars via biological and other physiochemical techniques. Related mechanisms and further applications of multiple modified biochar in soil and water systems remediation have been discussed and summarized. Furthermore, existing research gaps and challenges are discussed, as well as further study needs are suggested. This work epitomizes the scientific prospects for a complete understanding of employing modified biochar as an efficient candidate for the decontamination of polluted soil and water systems for regenerative development.

Abstract The current distribution of Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) is available on the IUCN Red List of Threatened species website; however, nothing is known about the historical extent and occurrence of this species. Therefore, we aimed to understand the historical distribution of the Asiatic black bear, and map and estimate its total size, to compare it with that of species current distribution. In addition, we analyzed a network of protected areas in the past and current ranges of the species. We employed geographic information system (GIS) software to reconstruct and measure the historical range of the Asiatic black bear, comparing past and current ranges to analyze its expected range contraction. The main focus of the study was to enhance our understanding of the species' historical distribution, contributing to better conservation strategies for the present and future perspectives. The utilization of GIS tools facilitates a comprehensive exploration of the factors influencing the species' decline, ultimately aiding in more effective management and conservation efforts. We used published records of black bear’s occurrence in anywhere in history to reconstruct its historical distribution range. Results revealed that the Asiatic black bear was more widely distributed in historical times and its range spanned across approximately 15.86 million km2 while its current range is limited to approximately 7.85 million km2, showing a range contraction of approximately 49.5% (8.02 million km2 reduced). The total protected areas in the historical range of the species were found to be N = 9933, with total size of 0.946 million km2, against N = 6580 (0.667 million km2) that are present in the current range. Approximately 27.5% of the protected areas have lost the Asiatic black bear since historical times.

Abstract Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) is the most consumed vegetable worldwide with the potential for diverse ecological adaptation. However, increasing salinization and changing climatic conditions are posing serious threats to the growth, yield, and quality of okra. Therefore, to mitigate increasing soil salinization and ensure sustainable okra production under rapidly changing climatic conditions, evaluation of new okra germplasm to develop salt tolerant cultivars is direly needed. The present study was designed to evaluate the genetic resources of okra genotypes for salt tolerance at growth and reproductive phases. Based on mophological and physio-biochemical responses of plants under stress condition, genotypes were divided into salt tolerant and succeptible groups. The experiment was comprised of 100 okra genotypes and each genotype was grown under control conditions and 6.5 dS m−1 NaCl concentration in a pot having 10 kg capacity. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design and each treatment was replicated three times. The results showed vast genetic variability among the evaluated okra germplasm traits like days to emergence, pod length, pod diameter, plant height, stem girth, and other yield-related parameters. Correlation analysis showed a highly significant positive association among the number of leaves at first flower and plant height at first flower.Likewise, pod weight also revealed a highly significant positive relationship for pod weight plant-1, pod length, and K+: Na+. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed that out of 16 principal components (PCs), five components showed more than one eigenvalue and the first six PCs contributed 67.2% of the variation. Bi-plot analysis illustrated that genotypes 95, 111, 133, 99, and 128, under salt stress conditions, exhibited both high yield per plant and salt-tolerant behavior in other yield-related traits. On the basis of all studied traits, a salt susceptible group and a salt-tolerant group were formed. The salt tolerant group comprised of 97, 68, 95, 114, 64, 99, 111, 133, 128, and 109 genotypes, whereas, the salt susceptible group contained 137, 139, 130, 94, and 125 genotypes. Salt-tolerant okra genotypes were suggested to be used in further breeding programs aimed to develop salt tolerance in okra. These insights will empower precision breeding, underscore the importance of genetic diversity, and bear the potential to address the challenges of salt-affected soils while promoting broader agricultural resilience, economic prosperity, and food security.

AbstractParoxetine is not suitable for oral administration due to its extensive first-pass metabolism, thus resulting in less bioavailability. This study aimed to prepare novel paroxetine-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) based sustained-release transdermal patches to overcome these problems by enhancing drug absorption and bioavailability. Nine formulations of paroxetine SLNs were prepared by the hot melt-homogenization method using different concentrations of glycerol monostearate (Kolliwax) and Tween 80. Then these prepared SLNs were incorporated in a matrix type transdermal patch having a matrix of ethyl cellulose and polyvinyl pyrrolidone in 3:2 with polyvinyl alcohol. The SLNs showed a particle size range of 113–230 nm and an entrapment efficiency of 85.14%. The SLNs showed sustained paroxetine release (77.86–95.63% release) up to 48 h. FTIR studies showed no interaction between drug and formulation components. Paroxetine is evenly distributed in an amorphous form in SLNs, as demonstrated by DSC as well as PXRD analysis. SLNs formulated patches showed higher drug permeation through the skin than drug-based transdermal patches., Draize patch test revealed no sign of erythema after applying paroxetine-loaded SLN patches (score 0) as observed with the marketed product. The developed SLNs based transdermal patches showed increased permeability and sustained release behaviour.

This study investigated the antioxidant effect of quercetin-treated semen on frozen–thawed spermatozoa quality and in-vivo fertility in crossbred Kamori goats. In total, 32 ejaculates from four fertile bucks were diluted in Tris-based egg yolk extender with varying levels of quercetin (0, 1, 5, 10, and 15 μM). The fungal endophytes are an understudied area of research with great potential for new bioactive compounds’ discovery. These are the fungal strains that live within the inner compartments of the host plant without causing it any kind of harm. These fungal endophytes, in combination with the host organisms, synthesize many compounds with a range of pharmaceutical values. Most recently, the discovery of fungal endophyte genes which are linked with the biosynthesis of plant metabolites has opened a new field of research. These plant partners assist plants against biotic stress and protect them from pathogenic attacks or diseases with the presence of some important gene families like WRKY and MYB. The bioactive metabolites from this group are known for their anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anti-tubercular properties. Therefore, these bioactive compounds offer new routes for discovering novel drugs, which can boost the pharmaceutical industry in times of great demand for novel drugs. Extracellular enzymes are also produced within the members of this distinct group which are crucial for several industrial sectors, including the biofuel production industry. Furthermore, fungal endophytes are capable of synthesizing silver nanoparticles, which exhibit significant potential in fields like biomedical imaging and water purification. This article aims to document all the available data on this group of fungi living in medicinal plants and the major compounds produced by members of this distinct group that are in use for the therapy of various ailments.

Photoelectric dual-mode sensors, which respond to strain signal through photoelectric dual-signals, hold great promise as wearable sensors in human motion monitoring. In this work, a photoelectric dual-mode sensor based on photonic crystals hydrogel was developed for human joint motion detection. The optical signal of the sensor originated from the structural color of photonic crystals, which was achieved by tuning the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres diameter. The reflective peak of the sensor, based on 250 nm PMMA PCs, shifted from 623 nm to 492 nm with 100% strain. Graphene was employed to enhance the electrical signal of the sensor, resulting in a conductivity increase from 9.33 × 10−4 S/m to 2 × 10−3 S/m with an increase in graphene from 0 to 8 mg·mL−1. Concurrently, the resistance of the hydrogel with 8 mg·mL−1 graphene increased from 160 kΩ to 485 kΩ with a gauge factor (GF) = 0.02 under 100% strain, while maintaining a good cyclic stability. The results of the sensing and monitoring of finger joint bending revealed a significant shift in the reflective peak of the photoelectric dual-mode sensor from 624 nm to 526 nm. Additionally, its resistance change rate was measured at 1.72 with a 90° bending angle. These findings suggest that the photoelectric dual-mode sensor had the capability to detect the strain signal with photoelectric dual-mode signals, and indicates its great potential for the sensing and monitoring of joint motion.

Different heavy metals can be eliminated by non-living or living biomass. Various aquatic plants species can be applied for the removal of metals. In this research, cadmium, copper, zinc and lead adsorption properties of Lemna minor L. and Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms were examined. This work was carried in the laboratory to ascertain the efficiency of aquatic plants Eichhornia crassipes and Lemna minor on the removal of various metals. Two plants Lemna minor and Eichhornia crassipes were obtained in a dehydrated powder type. The adsorption procedure of various metals was investigated under different pH ranges, metal ion concentration and reaction times as well as noticed the chemical composition of these plants. The results indicated that both submerged aquatic plant powders can be effectively used for heavy metal elimination under various factors. The FTIR spectra analysis showed a various functional groups in both aquatic plants, they accelerated the adsorption process.

Hybrid nanofluids (HNFs) of metallic oxide-based nanoparticles (NPs) have been prepared in different basefluids (BFs) employing the thermal plasma technique. NPs of ZnO–MgO were directly dispersed into pristine coolant, engine oil, distilled water (DW), and coconut oil. Plasma was generated between two identical electrodes applying 8.0 kV at the ambient conditions and proved economically viable in preparing stable HNFs. X-ray Diffractometry (XRD) showed ZnO and MgO NPs possessed hexagonal and cubic crystal structures, respectively. The band gap is calculated through UV-visible spectroscopy. The thermal conductivity (TC) of the HNFs has been measured using a thermal conductivity analyzer based on the transient hot wire method. The band gaps of pristine coolant and its HNFs were obtained to be 3.35 eV and 3.33 eV, respectively. In engine oil and its HNFs, band gaps of 3.16 eV and 3.02 eV have been extracted. There appears to be a slight reduction in band gap for coolant and engine oil-based HNFs. The band gap value of coconut oil-based HNFs was 4.05 eV, which showed a higher value than the pristine coconut oil-based HNFs (3.95 eV). The band gap calculated in the case of DW-based HNFs was 3.79 eV. TC of HNFs with volume concentration of 0.019 % for DW, 0.020 % for coolant, 0.016 % for engine oil, and 0.017 % for coconut oil were tested between 20 and 60 °C. An increase in TC was observed with the rise in temperature of the HNFs. Maximum increment in TC was observed at 60 °C for coolant-based HNFs, which was 19 %, followed by DW (18%), coconut oil (18%), and engine oil (16%), respectively. DW-based HNFs can be used as a coolant and optical filter for optoelectronics devices like photovoltaic cells for better performance. The study underscores precise control of NPs size as pivotal for band gap influence. HNFs hold promise as the next-gen heat transfer fluids (HTFs), revolutionizing thermal conductivity across industries. This research lays a firm foundation for plasma-synthesized HNFs' application in enhanced heat transfer and optoelectronic devices. Coolant-based HNFs excel in thermal conductivity, addressing heat transfer challenges.

Humans and wildlife, including domesticated animals, are exposed to a myriad of environmental contaminants that are derived from various human activities, including agricultural, household, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and industrial products. Excessive exposure to pesticides, heavy metals, and phthalates consequently causes the overproduction of reactive oxygen species. The equilibrium between reactive oxygen species and the antioxidant system is preserved to maintain cellular redox homeostasis. Mitochondria play a key role in cellular function and cell survival. Mitochondria are vulnerable to damage that can be provoked by environmental exposures. Once the mitochondrial metabolism is damaged, it interferes with energy metabolism and eventually causes the overproduction of free radicals. Furthermore, it also perceives inflammation signals to generate an inflammatory response, which is involved in pathophysiological mechanisms. A depleted antioxidant system provokes oxidative stress that triggers inflammation and regulates epigenetic function and apoptotic events. Apart from that, these chemicals influence steroidogenesis, deteriorate sperm quality, and damage male reproductive organs. It is strongly believed that redox signaling molecules are the key regulators that mediate reproductive toxicity. This review article aims to spotlight the redox toxicology of environmental chemicals on male reproduction function and its fertility prognosis. Furthermore, we shed light on the influence of redox signaling and metabolism in modulating the response of environmental toxins to reproductive function. Additionally, we emphasize the supporting evidence from diverse cellular and animal studies.

Glipizide, a poor water-soluble drug belongs to BCS class II. The proposed work aimed to enhance the solubility of glipizide by preparing solid dispersions, using polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). Solvent evaporation method was used for the preparation of glipizide solid dispersions. Solid dispersions were prepared in four different drug-to-polymer ratios i.e. 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4. Mainly effect of three polymers (PVP K30, PVP K90 and PEG 6000) was evaluated on the solubility and dissolution of glipizide. The in-vitro dissolution of all prepared formulations was performed under pH 6.8 at 37°C using USP type II apparatus. In-vitro dissolution results revealed that the formulations having high concentrations of the polymer showed enhanced solubility. Enhancements in the solubility and rate of dissolution of the drug were noted in solid dispersion formulations compared to the physical blends and pure drug. Solid dispersions containing polyvinyl pyrrolidone exhibited a more favorable pattern of drug release compared to the corresponding solid dispersions with PEG. An increase in the maximum solubility of the drug within the solid dispersion systems was observed in all instances. Two solid dispersion formulations were optimized and formulated into immediate-release tablets, which passed all the pharmacopoeial and non-pharmacopoeial tests. Fourier transformed Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to indicate drug: polymer interactions in solid state. Analysis of the solid dispersion samples through characterization tests indicated the compatibility between the drug and the polymer.

This study investigates the impact of board governance mechanism on investment efficiency (IE) in PSX-listed firms. The study also examines the role of institutional ownership (IO) in board-IE relationships. In addition, we extend our analysis to re-examine this relationship by splitting the sample into two groups, i.e., the introductory phase of corporate governance (CG) i.e., 2004 to 2013, and revised codes of CG (2014 to 2018) to examine the impact of these separately on IE. The sample data comprises 155 non-financial PSX-listed firms from 2004 to 2018. IE is measured using firms' growth opportunities. The random effect model is used to test the study's hypotheses. A robustness test is also performed to validate the study's findings. The paired-sample t-test results show a significant improvement in IE after revising the CG codes in 2012. According to the regression results, board size has a significant direct, whereas board diversity has a significant inverse effect on IE. Regarding moderating effect, IO was found to moderate the relationship between board independence and IE significantly. Furthermore, it was discovered that following the issuance of revised CG codes-2012, the level of board independence and diversity increased in PSX-listed firms; however, only diversity positively impacted IE, and board independence had no impact on IE from 2014 to 2018. Despite the issuance of revised CG codes-2012, the level of CG among PSX-listed firms is low, which is a source of concern for regulators such as the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan.

Mercury (Hg) contamination is acknowledged as a global issue and has generated concerns globally due to its toxicity and persistence. Tunable surface-active sites (SASs) are one of the key features of efficient BCs for Hg remediation, and detailed documentation of their interactions with metal ions in soil medium is essential to support the applications of functionalized BC for Hg remediation. Although a specific active site exhibits identical behavior during the adsorption process, a systematic documentation of their syntheses and interactions with various metal ions in soil medium is crucial to promote the applications of functionalized biochars in Hg remediation. Hence, we summarized the BC's impact on Hg mobility in soils and discussed the potential mechanisms and role of various SASs of BC for Hg remediation, including oxygen-, nitrogen-, sulfur-, and X (chlorine, bromine, iodine)- functional groups (FGs), surface area, pores and pH. The review also categorized synthesis routes to introduce oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur to BC surfaces to enhance their Hg adsorptive properties. Last but not the least, the direct mechanisms (e.g., Hg- BC binding) and indirect mechanisms (i.e., BC has a significant impact on the cycling of sulfur and thus the Hg-soil binding) that can be used to explain the adverse effects of BC on plants and microorganisms, as well as other related consequences and risk reduction strategies were highlighted. The future perspective will focus on functional BC for multiple heavy metal remediation and other potential applications; hence, future work should focus on designing intelligent/artificial BC for multiple purposes.

Public sector university libraries in interior Sindh are embracing Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for their technical and routine work. This study explored the current status of ICTs infrastructure, its application in different areas of library activities, library automation, digitization, and web-based services by employing the concurrent mixed methods approach. The quantitative (QUAN) data were collected from 141 central and seminar libraries of public sector universities in interior Sindh accredited by Pakistan's Higher Education Commission (HEC) using an adopted survey questionnaire. While, an in-depth interview of the heads of purposively selected 14 universities' central libraries were conducted for qualitative (QUAL) data. The findings revealed that the majority of libraries in interior Sindh were lacking in sufficient hardware and other ICT equipment; that most of the libraries didn’t have library automation and digital libraries’ softwares with no library website and access of HEC digital library resources. Based on the finding and the qualitative data from the respondents, it was suggested that different professional development training programs and workshops on library automation and digitization should arrange for the university library professionals in Interior Sindh arrange This study provides insightful findings for the policy makers to improve the current alarming status of the university libraries of Interior Sindh.

Coronaviruses have caused widespread disease and death worldwide, leading to the implementation of lockdown measures and the closure of educational institutions in various countries. This research aims to investigate the impact of social isolation on the cognitive functioning of young students. The study included 84 subjects, with 48 being socially isolated and 36 non-isolated individuals. The participants’ mental health was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), while cognitive functions were evaluated through attention-switching tasks (AST), pattern recognition memory (PRM), and choice reaction time (CRT) tests utilizing the Cambridge Neuropsychological Automated Battery (CANTAB) software. The socially isolated group had an average age of 21.3 ± 1.1 years, whereas the non-isolated group had an average age of 22.8 ± 2.0 years. The MMSE scores were 25.8 ± 1.6 for the socially isolated group and 28.6 ± 1.3 for the non-isolated group. In terms of cognitive functioning, there were significant differences (p = 0.000) observed in the values of AST correct latency for non-switching blocks (blocks 3 and 5) between the socially isolated group (608.1 ± 139.2) and the non-isolated group (499.5 ± 67.8). Similarly, the AST mean correct latency for switching blocks (block 7) was significantly different (p = 0.012) between the socially isolated group (784.4 ± 212.5) and the non-isolated group (671.8 ± 175.6). The socially isolated group exhibited significantly higher values in AST correct mean latency, AST congruent mean latency, AST incongruent mean latency, and AST percent mean correct trials compared to the non-isolated group. Additionally, the PRM mean percent correct significantly differed (p = 0.000) between the isolated group (81.3 ± 12.0) and the non-isolated group (91.9 ± 9.2). The isolated group also showed a higher CRT correct mean latency (482.4 ± 128.9) than the non-isolated group (451.0 ± 59.0), however the difference was not significant. In conclusion, social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a decline in the cognitive functioning of young students.

AbstractDrug nanofibers play a crucial role in ameliorating therapeutic effects, reducing toxicity, and increasing the bioavailability of drugs. This study was aimed at the fabrication of isotretinoin-loaded MMT-reinforced bi-polymeric (PAN/PU) nanofibers with varying concentrations of isotretinoin. In this study, montmorillonite (MMT)-reinforced cross-linked polyacrylonitrile and pullulan nanofibers combined with varying amounts of isotretinoin were fabricated through an electrospinning approach and investigated for their drug permeation potential. PAN-PU nanofibers were successfully integrated with the isotretinoin. The incorporation of isotretinoin into the nanofibrous structure was confirmed by FTIR and XRD. TGA study indicated the stability of the fabricated nanoparticles. The SEM results showed the beaded and smooth morphology of nanofibers. Formulation with a higher drug concentration had a non-significantly (p > 0.05) higher swelling ratio. Drug-loaded polymeric nanofiber erodes at a slower rate as compared to drug-free nanofibers. The ex-vivo permeation study of nanofibers revealed that the drug was not released all at once, but rather gradually and consistently over the period of 24 h, indicating a controlled release of the drug. In addition, the drug concentration in the nanofibers affected the permeation of the drug. According to the findings, isotretinoin-loaded MMT-reinforced bi-polymeric (PAN/PU) nanofibers with varying concentrations of isotretinoin were successfully fabricated. The fabricated nanofibers (PAN/PU) showed a promising potential for controlled permeation of drugs through rabbit skin.

Using this identity, we construct several new pq-Simpson’s type inequalities for generalized convex functions on coordinates. Setting p1=p2=1 in these inequalities yields well-known quantum Simpson’s type inequalities for coordinated generalized convex functions. Our results have important implications for the creation of post quantum mathematical frameworks.

The flow and heat transfer of a steady, viscous biomagnetic fluid containing magnetic particles caused by the swirling and stretching motion of a three-dimensional cylinder has been investigated numerically in this study. Because fluid and particle rotation are different, a magnetic field is applied in both radial and tangential directions to counteract the effects of rotational viscosity in the flow domain. Partial differential equations are used to represent the governing three-dimensional modeled equations. With the aid of customary similarity transformations, this system of partial differential equations is transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations. They are then numerically resolved utilizing a common finite differences technique that includes iterative processing and the manipulation of tridiagonal matrices. Graphs are used to depict the physical effects of imperative parameters on the swirling velocity, temperature distributions, skin friction coefficient, and the rate of heat transfer. For higher values of the ferromagnetic interaction parameter, it is discovered that the axial velocity increases, whereas temperature and tangential velocity drop. The cytoskeleton is a fundamental component found in all eukaryotic organisms, serving as a critical factor in various essential cyto-biological mechanisms, particularly in the locomotion and morphological transformations of plant cells. The cytoskeleton is comprised of three main components: microtubules (MT), microfilaments (MF), and intermediate filaments (IF). The cytoskeleton plays a crucial role in the process of cell wall formation and remodeling throughout the growth and development of cells. It is a highly organized and regulated network composed of filamentous components. In the basic processes of intracellular transport, such as mitosis, cytokinesis, and cell polarity, the plant cytoskeleton plays a crucial role according to recent studies. The major flaws in the organization of the cytoskeletal framework are at the root of the aberrant organogenesis currently observed in plant mutants. The regulation of protein compartmentalization and abundance within cells is predominantly governed by the process of vesicle/membrane transport, which plays a crucial role in several signaling cascades.The regulation of membrane transport in eukaryotic cells is governed by a diverse array of proteins. Recent developments in genomics have provided new tools to study the evolutionary relationships between membrane proteins in different plant species. It is known that members of the GTPases, COP, SNAREs, Rabs, tethering factors, and PIN families play essential roles in vesicle transport between plant, animal, and microbial species. This Review presents the latest research on the plant cytoskeleton, focusing on recent developments related to the cytoskeleton and summarizing the role of various proteins in vesicle transport. In addition, the report predicts future research direction of plant cytoskeleton and vesicle trafficking, potential research priorities, and provides researchers with specific pointers to further investigate the significant link between cytoskeleton and vesicle trafficking.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It can lead to mild to severe respiratory illness, as well as death. Nurses are frontline health workers to care the COVID-19 patients effectively. The objective of the study was to determine the knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding COVID-19 among nurses working at tertiary care public sector hospitals in Karachi. METHODOLOGY: Analytical cross-sectional study was conducted at Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Trauma, Karachi, for three months from October to December 2020. The calculated sample size was 239 nurses of both genders. Non-probability convenient sampling technique was used to access the participants. A validated and open accessed tool was used for data collection. A Chi-square test was used to assess the association of Knowledge, attitude, and practice toward COVID-19 with demographic variables. The level of significance was considered with a p-value ≤0.05. RESULTS: Out of the total, 145 (59.4%) were female, and a majority of 158 (66.1%) of the study subject's ages ranged from 25-30 years old. Mostly 156 (65.3%) of the study participants had a diploma in nursing. Approximately half of 130 (54.4%) of the participants worked the morning shift. Objective: To evaluate and compare merits between intensity modulated radiotherapy and volumetric modulated arc-therapy radiotherapy techniques to determine which technique can achieve better treatment plan quality and efficient delivery. Method: The retrospective study was conducted at the Radiation Oncology Department of SanBorotlo Hospital, Vicenza, Italy, in 2019, and comprised data from Jan 2019 to Dec 2019 related to prostate and head-and-neck patients in whom Pinnacle³ treatment planning system was used for optimisation with different prescribed doses and target geometries for intensity modulated radiotherapy and volumetric modulated arc-therapy techniques. Treatment plans were simulated using 6MV photon beam of SynergyS® Linac (Linear accelerator). The plan quality was evaluated using dose-volume indices for planning target-volume and organs-at-risk. ArcCHECK™ phantom was used for dose agreement verification between planed and delivered doses. Results: Data of 8 patients was analysed. Intensity modulated radiotherapy and volumetric modulated arc-therapy treatment plan quality for prostate was found to be similar, but volumetric modulated arc-therapy had significant results for maximum dose (p=0.005). Intensity modulated radiotherapy and volumetric modulated arc-therapy plans for head-and-neck achieved adequate target coverage and sparing of organs at risk, and produced clinically acceptable treatment plans. Biochar production and application have become increasingly popular in the past 15 years. Biochar, derived from diverse biomass types, offers a rich carbon source created through thermal combustion. Biochar production primarily depends on pyrolysis conditions and feedstock type. This review focuses on the multifaceted aspects of biochar, encompassing hydrothermal carbonization, gasification, and pyrolysis temperatures in biochar production and its role in bioeconomy and soil remediation. Biochar has yielded valuable insights, notably in decreasing nutrient leaching, curbing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, reducing the bioavailability of environmental pollutants, sequestering carbon (C) in soils, and enhancing agricultural productivity. Consequently, it has emerged as a valuable commodity for the bioeconomy, which involves harnessing bioresources through bioengineering to create economically valuable products. As a marketable output, biochar finds application in energy, diverse biochar-based product manufacturing, and the agricultural sector. Thus, biochar production not only enhances soil quality but also unlocks additional revenue streams. This review underscores the critical role of feedstock selection and pyrolysis conditions in optimizing biochar production. Furthermore, it highlights biochar as a sustainable and effective tool for improving various soil types and remediating soil contamination caused by organic impurities, including persistent organic compounds and antibiotics.

Neurodegenerative disorders represent a major and growing healthcare challenge globally. Among the numerous molecular pathways implicated in their pathogenesis, calpain signaling has emerged as a crucial player in neuronal dysfunction and cell death. Calpain is a family of calcium-dependent cysteine proteases that is involved in many biological processes, such as signal transduction, cytoskeleton remodeling, and protein turnover. Dysregulation of calpain activation and activity has been associated with several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s diseases. Understanding the intricate structure of calpains is crucial for unraveling their roles in cellular physiology and their implications in pathology. In addition, the identification of diverse abnormalities in both humans and other animal models with deficiencies in calpain highlights the significant progress made in understanding calpain biology. In this comprehensive review, we delve into the recent roles attributed to calpains and provide an overview of the mechanisms that govern their activity during the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. The possibility of utilizing calpain inhibition as a potential therapeutic approach for treating neuronal dysfunctions in neurodegenerative disorders would be an area of interest in future calpain research.

This research directs to obtain optimum fuzzy soft constants through Bonferroni mean and TOPSIS with the initial data represented in terms of multi-valued m-polar neutrosophic soft set. Multi-valued m-polar neutrosophic soft set is defined in this paper, which is the generalization of m-polar neutrosophic soft set, obtained by combining it with multi-valued neutrosophic soft set. Optimum fuzzy soft constants play a fundamental role for the construction of the system of differential equations which helps to observe the experts, future attitudes. Sometimes experts feel a requirement to rethink their choices or decisions due to the observation of others, choice especially when others choose different alternatives. After the individual decisions of experts, an analysis of experts, attitudes is produced by using phase portraits and line graphs of the system of differential equations. This analysis can also be provided by using system of differential equations with fuzzy initial conditions. To find the multi-valued m-polar neutrosophic Bonferroni mean, some basic operations on the elements of the defined set are introduced. Purpose of present study was to develop eight formulations of chlorpheniramine (CPM) niosomes according to 23 factorial design, characterise on the basis of various evaluation tests, i.e. in vitro drug release, SEM, FTIR, TGA and release kinetics, optimise the eight formulation on the basis in vitro drug release data, formulate gel of optimised dispersion, and to perform in vivo and histopathological study using gel of optimised dispersion on rabbits. Here, N3 having low level of cholesterol and span-80 but high level of span-60(0.1:0.2:0.05) was selected as optimised dispersion of niosomes that showed highest drug release i.e. 88.25% at pH 6 over 24 h of study and followed Korsmeyers-Peppas release kinetics with Fickian diffusion mechanism. After application of statistic by Analysis of variance (ANOVA) with 3D surface plots construction, gel of optimised dispersion of CPM niosomes was formulated, and evaluated by tests for i.e. viscosity, Spreadability, Extrudibility, drug content, drug entrapment, stability, SEM, FTIR, TGA, in vitro drug release, in vivo drug release following first order kinetics and histopathological study. Niosomal gel of CPM ensured successful development using suitable combination of non-ionic surfactants, and effective loading of drug for targeted delivery of drug.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the antibacterial potential and ex vivo skin permeation kinetics of cefixime from bionanocomposite films. Methods: The films were prepared by solvent casting method by using chitosan and starch. The fabricated films were tested for their antibacterial potential against three bacteria i.e. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Acetobacter aceti. This study aimed to synthesize the silver nanoparticles (SNPs) and loaded chitosan nanoparticles (LCNPs) using Euphorbia prostata based on their anticandidal activity. Antioxidant capacity and the total phenolic and total flavonoid content of plant samples and synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) were also evaluated. SNPs and LCNPs were prepared, respectively using chemical reduction of silver salt solution and ionotropic gelation method. The anticandidal activity was assessed by broth micro-dilution method and the antioxidant activity was determined using free-radical scavenging assays. The synthesized NPs after the optimization process were found to be spherical with sizes ranging from 12 to 100 nm. Spectroscopic analysis of NPs showed the appearance of peaks in prescribed wavelength ranging between 402 and 493 nm. The synthesized NPs showed potent anticandidal activity compared to the free extract. The SNPs formulations NpEPM 7.5 and NpEPMR 7.5, showed significantly low MIC values ranging between 2 and 128 µg/mL. In the case of LCNPs, NpEPM (4:1) and NpEPME (4:1) also showed lower MIC values ranging from 32 to 256 µg/mL. The plant samples as well as NPs showed antioxidant potential. In addition, plant extracts and NPs possess the potent biological potential and can be further investigated through in vivo experiments.

Chitosan-based nano-sized particles increase the penetration of the drug through the narrow junction into the bloodstream and target the specific site. The objective of this study was to prepare chitosan nanoparticles to entrap a hydrophobic drug (tamoxifen citrate), followed by the alginate coating of the developed nanoparticles to decrease their degradation in the acidic pH. Drug-loaded chitosan nanoparticles were prepared by the ionic gelation method. Alginate coating was done by dissolving sodium alginate to buffer solution and drug-loaded chitosan nanoparticles drop-wise under mild agitation. The size of alginate coated chitosan nanoparticles, zeta potential, surface morphology, in-vitro drug release, and entrapment efficiency was measured. The optimised formulation of both uncoated (SH3) and coated (SH7) formulation showed the particle size, PDI, and zeta potential with values 221 & 338 nm, 0.161 & 0.230 and 36.5 & −20.7 mV, respectively. The resulted nanoparticle surface was non-porous. The percentage yield of the optimised formulation SH3 was 28% and SH6 was 33%. The entrapment efficiency of the optimised formulation SH3 (uncoated formulation) and SH6 (coated formulation) is 69.5 and 58.51%, respectively. Chitosan nanoparticles were successfully prepared to entrap tamoxifen citrate. The coating of chitosan nanoparticles decreased their degradation in the acidic pH.

Herein the first-principle modeling within the DFT framework is used to investigate the structural, optoelectronic, elastic, and thermoelectric properties of BaMF3 (M = Ag and Cu) ternary halide Perovskites compounds. The computed tolerance factors for BaAgF3 and BaCuF3 are 0.919 and 0.991 respectively, indicating that the cubic crystal phase of these selected compounds is thermodynamically and mechanically stable. It is found that both the compounds are structurally stable according to the Birch-Murnaghan fit curve for optimization. The IRelast package is used for investigating the elastic properties of both cubic compounds and the findings show that these compounds are mechanically stable, scratch-resistant, ductile, anisotropic, and resistant to plastic deformation. The Trans-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson (TB-mBJ) approximation is employed to determine electronic properties with accuracy and precision. The electronic-band structure analysis depicts a narrow band gap semiconductor nature of BaAgF3 and BaCuF3 compounds which displays indirect band gaps of 0.2 eV for BaAgF3 and 0.3 eV for BaCuF3 at the high symmetrical points from (Γ–M). Furthermore, the computations of total densities of states (TDOS) and partial densities of states (PDOS) are carried out to determine how different states contribute to the various band structures. The optical characteristics of BaAgF3 and BaCuF3 are comprehensively examined in 0–40 eV energy ranges. The selected materials possess high optical conduction and absorption coefficients at the high level of photon energies and show transparency at low incident photon energy ranges. The investigations of optical properties led us to the conclusion that BaAgF3 and BaCuF3 are suitable to use in high-frequency UV devices. The thermoelectric properties show that both materials hold high-power factors, electrical conductivity, and figures of merit (ZT), indicating that they are good thermoelectric materials. This is the first theoretical computational systematic analysis of structural, optoelectronic, elastic, and thermoelectric properties of BaMF3 (M = Ag and Cu) that will be experimentally validated to our knowledge.

Objective: To assess the anxiety level in patients undergoing magnetic resonance imaging, and to see if structured informational care reduces anxiety compared to conventional approach. Method: The quasi-experimental study was conducted Dow Institute of Radiology, Dow University of Health Sciences Karachi, Pakistan from January 2020 to June 2021, and comprised adult patients of either gender undergoing magnetic resonance imaging of brain / cervical spine for the first time. They were divided into S-arm group exposed to structured information with pictures, recordings and videos, and C-arm group exposed to conventional information. The primary outcome was anxiety, measured by Beck Anxiety Inventory. Data was analysed using SPSS 11. Results: Of the 280 subjects, 140(50%) were in the S-arm; 65(46.4%) males and 75(53.6%) females with mean age 41.1±15.2 years. The C-arm had 140(50%) subjects; 78(55.7%) males and 62(44.3%) females with mean age 44.2±13.9 years (p>0.05). There is a demand for simple, selective, and efficient assays for the determination of clinically important metabolites such as creatinine for healthcare. Creatinine is the by-product of muscle energy metabolism and is excreted by the kidneys. To measure creatinine in the human serum, a creatinine imprinted photonic crystal hydrogel (CIPC hydrogel) for naked-eye detection is developed. CIPC hydrogel utilizes polystyrene-based two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal colloidal arrays (PCs-array) embedded in the polyacrylamide hydrogel containing methacrylic acid which imprinted the creatinine template. The nanocavities in the hydrogel produced after the removal of the template bind to and recognize creatinine in the serum samples. The binding is selective and specific for creatinine. The binding is observed as shrinkage of the hydrogel volume and a decrease in the particle spacing which is monitored through changes in the Debye diffraction ring diameter and a visible blue-green to blue color shift. The binding event and the mechanism are investigated by molecular dockings. The CIPC sensor demonstrates a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.45 ± 1.6 µM, a linear detection range (25–500 µM), and recovery from 85.6 % to 99.9 % in the serum samples. CIPC hydrogel is available for the rapid and quantitative onsite detection of creatinine in the human serum sample.

Cutaneous wounds pose a significant health burden, affecting millions of individuals annually and placing strain on healthcare systems and society. Nanofilm biomaterials have emerged as promising interfaces between materials and biology, offering potential for various biomedical applications. To explore this potential, our study aimed to assess the wound healing efficacy of amniotic fluid and Moringa olifera-loaded nanoclay films by using in vivo models. Additionally, we investigated the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of these films. Using a burn wound healing model on rabbits, both infected and non-infected wounds were treated with the nanoclay films for a duration of twenty-one days on by following protocols approved by the Animal Ethics Committee. We evaluated wound contraction, proinflammatory mediators, and growth factors levels by analyzing blood samples. Histopathological changes and skin integrity were assessed through H&E staining. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software (version 2; Chicago, IL, USA) with significance set at p < 0.05. Our findings demonstrated a significant dose-dependent increase in wound contraction in the 2%, 4%, and 8% AMF-Me.mo treatment groups throughout the study (p < 0.001). Moreover, macroscopic analysis revealed comparable effects (p > 0.05) between the 8% AMF-Me.mo treatment group and the standard treatment. Histopathological examination confirmed the preservation of skin architecture and complete epidermal closure in both infected and non-infected wounds treated with AMF-Me.mo-loaded nanofilms. RT-PCR analysis revealed elevated concentrations of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), along with decreased levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in AMF-Me.mo-loaded nanofilm treatment groups. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity of AMF-Me.mo-loaded nanofilms contributed to the decontamination of the wound site, positioning them as potential candidates for effective wound healing. However, further extensive clinical trials-based studies are necessary to confirm these findings.
