In this study several same-aged poplar species and clones were selected including Populus deltoides Marsh. CV. “Lux” (P.d “Lux”), Populus deltoides Marsh. CV. “Harvard” (P.d “Harvard”), Populus x canadensis Moench “Triplo” (P.xc “Triplo”), Populus x canadensis Moench “I-45/51” (P.xc “I-45/51”), planted in poplar research station about 20 years ago in the north of Iran, and Populus caspica Bornm. (P. caspica) as endemic and endangered poplar species. Some quantitative characteristics of the trees and soil samples were taken based on completely randomized block design. Samplings of live and senescent leaves were carried out in two-stages, mid-summer during the peak nutritional activities of trees and mid-autumn for senescent leaves. Soil samples were analyzed to determine organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (N), available phosphorus (P) and exchangeable potassium (K). OC, total of N, P and K were also determined in live and senescent leaves. The results showed that P.d “Harvard” had the highest total height, DBH and diameter of crown compared to the other species and clones. The amount of OC, N and P in soil and live leaves of P.d “Harvard” clone are more than those of the other species and clones. OC, N, P, and K returned by senescent leaves were higher and lower for P.d “Harvard” and P. caspica respectively. P retranslocation for all of the clones and species was higher compared to N and K. The highest retranslocation percentage was observed in P. caspica (N=18.93, P=39.63, K=24.02) and the lowest (N=12.09, P=32.46, K=21.14) in P.d “Harvard” clone. It could be concluded that poplar species and clones have different nutritional requirements and retranslocation capabilities. It appears that P.d “Harvard” clone showed higher quantitative growth it could be beneficial for maintaining the soil nutrient status for successive plantings.

Both initiation and maintenance of spermatogenesis are hormonally regulated by follicle stimulating hormone (rFSH) and testosterone. Co-culture systems also have important roles in the maintenance of spermatogenic cells. In this study, the effects of FSH and testosterone, co-culture system with Vero cells and co-culture supplemented with the hormones for maturation of frozen-thawed spermatids were determined. Testicular cells were suspended from the testis ofNational Medical Research Institute (NMRI) male mice and divided into two parts. The first aliquot of suspension was allocated for using as fresh and the rest was quickly cryopreserved. The frozen specimens were thawed and washed usingDulbecco modified Eagle's minimum essential medium (DMEM) medium. The fresh specimens were cultured in four groups: control (cultured on DMEM with 10% FBS), hormone (cultured on a medium supplemented with rFSH and testosterone), co-culture (cultured on Vero cells) and co-culture + hormone (cultured on Vero cells combined with rFSH and testosterone). The frozen-thawed specimens were cultured accordingly. The number of spermatids was recorded daily and the survival rates of each group were evaluated using Trypan blue test. The results showed that the number of the elongating spermatids was increased during the first day of the culture of fresh hormone, co-culture and co-culture + hormone groups. Viability rates of all kinds of the spermatid reduced during the 96 h of culturing. Our findings showed that the addition of hormone could support cell viability better than the co-culture. They also confirmed that the fresh round spermatid cells can progress into elongating and elongated spermatid only within the first 2 days of the culture in hormone, co-culture and co-culture + hormone groups. Soil quality can be assessed by measuring its physical, chemical and biological properties. In terrestrial ecosystems, the knowledge of the status of soil quality under different land use/cover can increase our understanding of processes related to soil functioning and help to properly managing ecosystems and increase their services. Conversion of the forest to rangelands is one of the most common forms of land use change having a significant effect on soil quality indicators. Here, we addressed the following objectives: (ii) to study the current status of soil physical, chemical and biological characteristics after more than thirty years of land use change from forest (dominated by Carpinus betulus and Parrotia persica) to rangeland, and (ii) to provide an overview of the spatial distributions of soil properties in forest and rangeland covers using a geostatistical method. For this, two sites (i.e., forest and rangeland) were selected in northern Iran. Within each site, 50 soil samples were collected at 0-10 cm depth along two sampling lines (250 m length) with a total of 100 soil samples for each site. Results showed that following the change of land use from forest to rangeland soil porosity, aggregate stability, pH, electrical conductivity and nutrient (i.e., total N and available P, K, Ca and Mg) contents increased, whereas soil bulk density and C/N ratio decreased. In addition, the population of soil biota (i.e., earthworms, acarina, collembola, nematode, protozoa, bacteria and fungi), microbial and enzyme activities decreased after more than thirty years of land use change from forest to rangeland. Principal component analysis confirmed that forest site had a more fertile soil and a higher biological activity than rangeland cover. Based on heat plots of soil properties, forest ecosystems created hot spots of soil quality indicators in the study area. Based on the geostatistical approach, most of the soil variables in the rangeland site followed a linear model, while in the forest site, most models were exponential and spherical. The fractal dimension values of the soil properties in the forest (1.62-1.99) had larger variations than in the rangeland (1.75-1.99) site. Ureaplasma urealyticum (uu) is one of the most common agents of urogenital infections and is associated with complications such as infertility, spontaneous abortion and other sexually transmitted diseases. Here, a DNA sensor based on oligonucleotide target-specific gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was developed, in which the dispersed and aggregated states of oligonucleotide-functionalised AuNPs were optimised for the colorimetric detection of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplicon of U. urealyticum DNA. A non-cross-linking approach utilising a single Au-nanoprobe specific of the urease gene was utilised and the effect of a PCR product concentration gradient evaluated. Results from both visual and spectral analyses showed that target-Au-nanoprobe hybrids were stable against aggregation after adding the inducer. Furthermore, when a non-target PCR product was used, the peak position shifted and salt-induced aggregation occurred. The assay's limit of detection of the assay was 10 ng with a dynamic range of 10-60 ng. This procedure provides a rapid, facile and low-cost detection format, compared to methods currently used for the identification of U. urealyticum .

The impact of bioreduction on the remobilization of adsorbed cadmium Cd(II) on minerals, including hematite, goethite, and two iron(III)-rich clay minerals nontronites (NAU-1 and NAU-2) under anoxic conditions was investigated. Langmuir isotherm equation better described the sorption of Cd(II) onto the all minerals. The maximum adsorption capacity was 6.2, 18.1, 3.6, and 4 mg g-1 for hematite, goethite, NAU-1 and NAU-2, respectively. The desorption of Cd(II) was due to the production of Fe(II) as a result of bioreduction of structural Fe(III) in the minerals by Shewanella putrefaciens. The bioreduction of Cd(II)-loaded Fe(III) minerals was negligible during the initial 5 days followed by a rapid increase up to 20 days. The amount of Cd(II) in solution phase at the end of 30 days increased up to 0.07 mmol L-1 for hematite, NAU-1, and NAU-2 and 0.02 mmol L-1 for goethite. The X-ray diffraction study showed negligible changes in bioreduced minerals phases.

Adsorption of As(V) on various clay minerals including kaolinite (KGa-1), montmorillonite (SWy-1) and nontronites (NAU-1 and NAU-2), and subsequent bioreduction of sorbed As(V) to As(III) by bacterium Shewanella putrefaciens strain CN-32 were investigated. Nontronites showed relatively higher sorption capacity for As(V) primarily due to higher iron oxide content. Freundlich equation well described the sorption of As(V) on NAU-1, NAU-2 and SWy-1, while As(V) sorption isotherm with KGa-1 fitted well in the Langmuir model. The bacterium rapidly reduced 50% of dissolved As(V) to As(III) in 2 h, followed by its complete reduction (>ca. 98%) within 12 h. In contrast, sorption of As(V) to the mineral surfaces interferes with the activity of bacterium, resulting in low bioreduction of As(V) by 27% for 5 days of incubation. S. putrefaciens also promoted the reduction of Fe(III) present in the clay mineral to Fe(II). This study indicates that the sorption and subsequent bioreduction of As(V) on clay minerals can significantly influence the mobility of As(V) in subsurface environment.
