This article introduces the Rug Methodology to enhance participation in the qualitative research process. The idea of using rugs to facilitate narratives and expression, and to build reciprocity and activate reflexivity and meaning-making, grew out of a peer-to-peer debate between the authors of this paper on a qualitative research approach for weaving rugs, inventive methods for community action, and drawing as a reflective practice. The article describes the procedure of drawing rugs to encourage people participation. Rugs are everyday objects but they can become a qualitative tool that can be used with in-depth interviews, amplifying the opportunity of collecting participants’ lived experiences, emotions, reflections, and desires. The paper aims to define a framework which connects “to-do activities” with dialogical practices in research and to describe strengths and limitations of drawings rugs in a qualitative research design. Drawings, life events, and stories from the field are described and discussed, showing how everyday objects such as rugs can support expression, participation, reflexivity, and how drawing rugs is suitable for various and vulnerable targets and settings in qualitative studies. Finally, the paper describes the challenges of analysing data from drawings to illustrate lived experiences related to people who stay in rural areas and how they learnt to generate their quality of life.

Results from the study ‘nature’s significance for human well-being’, shows that “The Rug of Life” gives additional value to the narratives. The method is qualitative with in-depth interviews combined with visual methodology of sixteen respondents between ages 25–76, who are living close to nature. In the interview it was asked what kind of nature has a meaning for them and how they estimate their well-being and nature’s impact on it and how quality of life are experienced, as well as nature’s and the local rural environment’s significance as a health promoting factor. The study has a salutogenic approach.

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent chronic disorders, associating numerous somatic and behavioral modifications. Oxytocin has been widely studied for its involvement in social behavior and psychiatric disorders. This pilot study presents a series of 3 patients with type 1 diabetes and diabetic neuropathy in which the values of plasma oxytocin, neurotensin, β-endorphins, α-MSH, substance P and orexin A were measured in comparison to 3 healthy controls with matching ages. In the diabetic patients group, there was a strong negative correlation between the value of plasma glucose and oxytocin (r=-0.99, p=0.04), respectively neurotensin (r=- 0.99, p=0.03). These values did not correlate in the control group. The results suggest that oxytocin, in conjunction with neurotensin, could be investigated as a potential early detection marker of diabetic neuropathy and, to our knowledge, this is the first report focusing on plasma oxytocin levels in patients with diabetic neuropathy. Cellular response to radiation damage is made by a complex network of pathways and feedback loops whose spatiotemporal organisation is still unclear despite its decisive role in determining the fate of the damaged cell. Revealing the dynamic sequence of the repair proteins is therefore critical in understanding how the DNA repair mechanisms work. There are also still open questions regarding the possible movement of damaged chromatin domains and its role as trigger for lesion recognition and signalling in the DNA repair context. The single-cell approach and the high spatial resolution offered by microbeams provide the perfect tool to study and quantify the dynamic processes associated with the induction and repair of DNA damage. We have followed the development of radiation-induced foci for three DNA damage markers (i.e. γ-H2AX, 53BP1 and hSSB1) using normal fibroblasts (AG01522), human breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF7) and human fibrosarcoma cells (HT1080) stably transfected with yellow fluorescent protein fusion proteins following irradiation with the QUB X-ray microbeam (carbon X-rays <2 µm spot). The size and intensity of the foci has been analysed as a function of dose and time post-irradiation to investigate the dynamics of the above-mentioned DNA repair processes and monitor the remodelling of chromatin structure that the cell undergoes to deal with DNA damage.
