Abstract Background Short interspersed nuclear elements (SINEs) are non-autonomous non-LTR retrotransposons widespread across eukaryotes. They exist both as lineage-specific, fast-evolving elements and as ubiquitous superfamilies characterized by highly conserved domains (HCD). Several of these superfamilies have been described in bivalves, however their overall distribution and impact on host genome evolution are still unknown due to the extreme scarcity of transposon libraries for the clade. In this study, we examined more than 40 bivalve genomes to uncover the distribution of HCD-tRNA-related SINEs, discover novel SINE-LINE partnerships, and understand their possible role in shaping bivalve genome evolution. Results We found that bivalve HCD SINEs have an ancient origin, and they can rely on at least four different LINE clades. According to a “mosaic” evolutionary scenario, multiple LINE partner can promote the amplification of the same HCD SINE superfamilies while homologues LINE-derived tails are present between different superfamilies. Multiple SINEs were found to be highly similar between phylogenetically related species but separated by extremely long evolutionary timescales, up to ~ 400 million years. Studying their genomic distribution in a subset of five species, we observed different patterns of SINE enrichment in various genomic compartments as well as differences in the tendency of SINEs to form tandem-like and palindromic structures also within intronic sequences. Despite these differences, we observed that SINEs, especially older ones, tend to accumulate preferentially within genes, or in their close proximity, consistently with a model of survival bias for less harmful, short non-coding transposons in euchromatic genomic regions. Conclusion Here we conducted a wide characterization of tRNA-related SINEs in bivalves revealing their taxonomic distribution and LINE partnerships across the clade. Moreover, through the study of their genomic distribution in five species, we highlighted commonalities and differences with other previously studied eukaryotes, thus extending our understanding of SINE evolution across the tree of life.

Anglophone cultures have had extensive contact with other ethnic groups over the last 200 years and almost always from a position of dominance (Filmer, 2012). In English there are racial slurs for practically every race or ethnic group and swear words are commonly used in English TV dialogues. Translating swear words in movie subtitles pose a translation challenge, which has been studied by scholars such as Soler Pardo (2015), Ávila-Cabrera (2016), Beseghi (2016) and Díaz-Pérez (2020). This paper analyses the translation from English into Italian of wop, eyetie and goombah, three racist epithets used to refer to Italians or people of Italian origin. The data analyzed are taken from the English-Italian parallel corpus of OpenSubtitles (Lison & Tiedemann, 2016), a collection of parallel corpora made up of translated movie subtitles. English subtitles from a variety of movies including these racist epithets are retrieved, together with the corresponding Italian translations, using parallel concordance. The renditions are analyzed with the aim of identifying general trends in the use and in the translation of these racial slurs. In addition, renditions are divided according to moderating variables such as the languages spoken in the film, the film release date, the countries the film was shot in and the genres of the film, to test whether these variables have a significant impact on translation choices.

Objective To investigate which factors influence the adherence to hearing aid (HA) use in elderly patients with moderate-to-severe hearing loss. Methods This observational, prospective, single-centre study enrolled patients with moderate-to-severe hearing loss. They were evaluated before and 1 year after having either one or two HAs fitted. Results A total of 86 patients were enrolled in the study and of these 69.8% (60 of 86; USER group) continued to use their HA at 1 year after fitting; six patients had not continued their use (NON-USERS). The USER group was younger than the NON-USER group, but the difference was not significant. The USER group had a significantly better unaided auditory threshold at baseline than the NON-USER group. HA use resulted in improvements in speech audiometry and auditory threshold. There was also a maintenance of cognitive function in the USER group. Conclusion Use of HA for 1 year resulted in improved auditory performance and an absence of a deterioration of cognitive function. Trial registration: This research was retrospectively registered under no. NCT04333043 at ClinicalTrials.gov ( http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ ) on the 26 March 2020. This research has been registered with the Ethics Committee of the Area Vasta Emilia Nord under number 104, date of approval 17/07/2017.

The world continues to undergo a profound demographic shift toward increasing longevity –but quality of life is not improving correspondingly. At the same time, countries are taking stock of the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on national immunization programs. The pandemic exacerbated the declines in vaccination coverage for multiple vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD). To ensure that all persons receive all the vaccines for which they are eligible, it is time to consider how applying a life course approach (LCA) to immunization programs can help reinvigorate and redesign actions for greater vaccine uptake. In this mini review, we present the key concepts and principles of the LCA as applied to national immunization programs. Also, we offer recommendations on how health systems can achieve regional and national goals to ensure all people receive the recommended vaccine doses at every stage of life, thus ensuring the greatest benefits for individuals and societies.

Vaccination Week in the Americas (VWA) is a yearly regional initiative that promotes the benefits of vaccination to all persons in the region. In its 22-year history, more than 1.15 billion people have been reached under the framework of VWA across more than 40 countries and territories. This review examines multiple PAHO and WHO data points, documents and reports related to measles/rubella vaccination coverage and VWA since its inception. Its goal is to document the impact that the VWA has had in maintaining and accelerating measles and rubella disease elimination, in the context of PAHO’s Disease Elimination Initiative. The results suggest that VWA’s contributions to measles and rubella elimination have been substantial. Every year, VWA promotes (a) renewed political commitment to the immunization program from the highest political authorities of Member States; (b) vaccination operations to close immunity gaps, recover under-vaccinated persons, and reach chronically underserved populations; and (c) the dissemination of messages on the benefits of vaccination through regional and national communications campaigns. VWA will continue to be an important contributor to disease elimination efforts in the Americas, even as new targets are set in response to the evolving epidemiological landscape.

Anemia is a well-known complication in CKD dogs, but its frequency in AKI dogs has been poorly investigated. The aim of the present study was to retrospectively evaluate frequency, degree of severity, and regeneration rate of anemia in relation to IRIS grade, etiology, therapy, and outcome. Medical records of dogs (2017–2023) with historical, laboratory, and ultrasound findings consistent with AKI were retrospectively reviewed. According to etiology, AKI was classified as ischemic/inflammatory (IS), infectious (INF), nephrotoxic (NEP), obstructive (OBS), and unknown (UK). AKI dogs were also classified according to therapeutical management (medical vs. hemodialysis), survival to discharge (survivors vs. non-survivors). Anemia was defined as HCT < 37% and classified as mild (HCT 30–37%), moderate (HCT 20–29%), severe (13–19%), or very severe (73 fL). Anemia was considered hypochromic (MCHC< 32 g/dL), normochromic (32 and 38 g/dL), and hyperchromic (>38 g/dL). Regeneration rate was considered absent (RET ≤ 60,000/μL), mild 61,000–150,000/μL), and moderate (>150,000/μL). A total of 120 AKI dogs were included in the study, and anemia was found in 86/120 dogs (72%). The severity of anemia was mild in 32/86 dogs (37%), moderate in 40/86 dogs (47%), severe in 11/86 dogs (13%), and very severe in 3/86 (3%). Anemia was normochromic in 71/86 dogs (83%), hyperchromic in 12/86 dogs (14%), and hypochromic in 3/86 dogs (3%). Normocytic anemia was present in 56/86 dogs (65%), microcytic anemia in 27/86 dogs (31%), and macrocytic anemia in 3/86 dogs (4%). Non-regenerative anemia was found in 76/86 dogs (88%). The frequency of anemia increased significantly (p < 0.0001) with the progression of IRIS grade, although no significant difference in the severity of anemia was found among the IRIS grades. The frequency of non-regenerative forms of anemia was significantly higher than regenerative forms (p < 0.0001) in all IRIS grades. In our population of AKI dogs, anemia was a very frequent finding, in agreement with current findings in human nephrology.

INTRODUZIONE: Il catetere venoso periferico è un dispositivo inserito per la somministrazione di liquidi nel torrente ematico. I pazienti spesso si trovano ad affrontare ripetuti esami al fine di monitorare lo stato di salute e l’andamento della terapia e tra questi vi rientrano le numerose venipunture ai fini della raccolta di campioni ematici, che arrecano loro dolore e discomfort. Al fine di ridurre il discomfort è possibile sostituire alla procedura standard con ago butterfly quella con prelievo da catetere venoso periferico. MATERIALI E METODI: è stato condotto uno studio osservazionale prospettico nel quale sono stati inclusi 207 pazienti nei quali era necessaria l’esecuzione di un prelievo venoso. I dati raccolti sono stati analizzati attraverso la statistica descrittiva. RISULTATI: L’esecuzione della procedura sperimentata risulta di buon successo con alcune difficoltà come l’esecuzione dello scarto iniziale mentre in caso di procedura non riuscita quella che si ripete per frequenza rispetto alle altre è l’aspirazione dello scarto iniziale assente. L'emolisi è risultata poco frequente ed è più diffusa nella chimica clinica. CONCLUSIONI: Da questo studio sono emersi nuovi quesiti inerenti allo svolgimento della tecnica del prelievo venoso da cannula periferica ma anche dati inerenti al tasso di emolisi, e quindi al successo della procedura stessa. Questo apre a nuovi spunti in futuro per un’analisi più approfondita sulle determinanti che conducono a questo fenomeno. Ciò nonostante, la procedura è una buona alternativa alla tecnica standard con ago butterfly per diminuire il dolore nei contesti d’urgenza.

(1) Background: Schwannomas of the vestibulocochlear nerve are benign, slow-growing tumors, arising from the Schwann cells. When they originate from neural elements within the vestibule or cochlea, they are defined as intralabyrinthine schwannomas (ILSs). Cochlear implant (CI) has been reported as a feasible solution for hearing restoration in these patients. (2) Methods: Two patients with single-sided deafness (SSD) due to sudden sensorineural hearing loss and ipsilateral tinnitus were the cases. MRI detected an ILS. CI was positioned using a standard round window approach without tumor removal. (3) Results: The hearing threshold was 35 dB in one case and 30 dB in the other 6 mo after activation. Speech audiometry with bisillables in quiet was 21% and 27% at 65 dB, and the tinnitus was completely resolved or reduced. In the localization test, a 25.9° error azimuth was obtained with CI on, compared to 43.2° without CI. The data log reported a daily use of 11 h and 14 h. In order to not decrease the CI’s performance, we decided not to perform tumor exeresis, but only CI surgery to restore functional binaural hearing. (4) Conclusions: These are the sixth and seventh cases in the literature of CI in patients with ILS without any tumor treatment and the first with SSD. Cochlear implant without tumor removal can be a feasible option for restoring binaural hearing without worsening the CI’s performance.

Abstract Chronic exposure to pollutants affects natural populations, creating specific molecular and biochemical signatures. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that chronic exposure to pollutants might have substantial effects on the Manila clam hologenome long after removal from contaminated sites. To reach this goal, a highly integrative approach was implemented, combining transcriptome, genetic and microbiota analyses with the evaluation of biochemical and histological profiles of the edible Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum, as it was transplanted for 6 months from the polluted area of Porto Marghera (PM) to the clean area of Chioggia (Venice lagoon, Italy). One month post‐transplantation, PM clams showed several modifications to its resident microbiota, including an overrepresentation of the opportunistic pathogen Arcobacter spp. This may be related to the upregulation of several immune genes in the PM clams, potentially representing a host response to the increased abundance of deleterious bacteria. Six months after transplantation, PM clams demonstrated a lower ability to respond to environmental/physiological stressors related to the summer season, and the hepatopancreas‐associated microbiota still showed different compositions among PM and CH clams. This study confirms that different stressors have predictable effects in clams at different biological levels and demonstrates that chronic exposure to pollutants leads to long‐lasting effects on the animal hologenome. In addition, no genetic differentiation between samples from the two areas was detected, confirming that PM and CH clams belong to a single population. Overall, the obtained responses were largely reversible and potentially related to phenotypic plasticity rather than genetic adaptation. The results here presented will be functional for the assessment of the environmental risk imposed by chemicals on an economically important bivalve species.

Very early bilateral implantation is thought to significantly reduce the attentional effort required to acquire spoken language, and consequently offer a profound improvement in quality of life. Despite the early intervention, however, auditory and communicative outcomes in children with cochlear implants remain poorer than in hearing children. The distorted auditory input via the cochlear implants requires more auditory attention resulting in increased listening effort and fatigue. Listening effort and fatigue may critically affect attention to speech, and in turn language processing, which may help to explain the variation in language and communication abilities. However, measuring attention to speech and listening effort is demanding in infants and very young children. Three objective techniques for measuring listening effort are presented in this paper that may address the challenges of testing very young and/or uncooperative children with cochlear implants: pupillometry, electroencephalography, and functional near-infrared spectroscopy. We review the studies of listening effort that used these techniques in paediatric populations with hearing loss, and discuss potential benefits of the systematic evaluation of listening effort in these populations.

A new non-invasive adhesive bone conduction hearing device (ABCD) has been proposed as an alternative solution for reversible bilateral conductive hearing loss in recurrent or long-lasting forms of otitis media with effusion (OME) in children that cannot undergo surgical treatment. Our aim was to assess the effectiveness of ABCD in children with OME. Twelve normal-hearing Italian-speaking volunteers, in whom a conductive hearing loss was simulated, participated in the study. The free-field average hearing threshold was determined and, to evaluate binaural hearing skills, loudness summation and the squelch effect were assessed. Five conditions were tested: (1) unaided without earplugs, (2) unaided with bilateral earplugs, (3) aided right ear with bilateral earplugs, (4) aided left ear with bilateral earplugs, and (5) bilateral aid with bilateral earplugs. Post-hoc analysis showed a significant statistical difference between plugged, unplugged, and each aided condition. The main results were a better loudness summation and a substantial improvement of the squelch effect in the bilaterally aided. Our results suggest that ABCD is a valid treatment for patients with conductive hearing loss that cannot undergo bone conduction implant surgery. It is also important to consider bilateral aids in order to deal with situations in which binaural hearing is fundamental.
