30. Effects of incorporating cellulose fibers from Yucca treculeanaL. on the thermal characteristics of green composites based on high-density poly-ethylene: An eco-friendly material for cleaner production

Abstract

This work has developed advanced technical applications in clean production based on a biocomposite high-density polyethylene (HDPE) reinforced cellulosic Yucca treculeanaL. fibers (YTFs) from agriculture waste leaves. Once the extraction was complete, the fibers were chemically treated with a low concentration (3% for 4 h) of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) to remove impurities from their surface and increase their adhesion capacity. Furthermore, this work aimed to understand how adding YTFs (10%, 20%, and 30%) influences the dynamic properties of the polymer-based clean production biocomposites. The impact of the additions on the damping behavior in terms of loss modulus (E″), storage modulus (E′), glass transition temperature (Tg), and loss factor (tanδ) of YTFs/HDPE biocomposites was evaluated at a frequency of 1 Hz using the dynamic mechanical analysis. In particular. According to the results, E′ is significantly improved by adding YTFs. Furthermore, to reach a Tgof about 80 °C, YF30/HDPE offers a tanδof 0.164, an E′ of 2491 MPa, and an E″ of 223 MPa. Scanning electron microscope images reveal a fiber-polymer interface that adheres firmly to the HDPE matrix. This study highlights the promising potential of YF/HDPE biocomposites as sustainable and cost-effective replacements for conventional materials in diverse applications. Indeed, given its load-bearing capacity and recyclability, this type of biocomposites would be a wise choice for manufacturing automotive interior trim, sporting goods, and eco-friendly building materials. Further research and development could optimize the properties of these biocomposites and extend their use to various cleaner production industries.

37. Thermomechanical and structural analysis of green hybrid composites based on polylactic acid/biochar/treated W. filiferapalm fibers

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the chemical treatment impact on Washingtonia filifera(WF) fibers using sodium bicarbonate (10% NaHCO3) for varying durations (24, 48, 72, 120, and 168 h) on the physical and mechanical characteristics of polylactic acid (PLA)/WF-biochar/biomass hybrid biocomposites. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were employed to examine the temperature effect on the mineralogical composition of treated and raw WF fibers and monitor their thermal behavior. The produced biocomposites' tensile, impact, flexural, and morphological characteristics were evaluated. The results demonstrate that chemical treatments improve matrix-fiber adhesion and remove impurities from the fiber surface. Hybrid biocomposites of PLA biopolymers manufactured from biochar and WF fibers given a sodium bicarbonate treatment for 72 h exhibit improved mechanical properties, such as elasticity modulus and strength under tensile and flexural forces. Consequently, these new hybrid biocomposites can be used in various structural and non-structural products, such as car interiors, new 3D printer filament, biomedical equipment and materials, sports equipment, food packaging.

Abstract

This study investigates the efficacy of adsorbents from locally sourced olive waste—encompassing olive skins, leaves, and pits, recovered from the initial centrifugation of olives (OWP)—and a composite with sodium alginate (OWPSA) for the removal of Cu2+ ions from synthetic wastewater. Experimental analyses conducted at room temperature, with an initial Cu2+ concentration of 50 mg/L and a solid/liquid ratio of 1 g/L, showed that the removal efficiencies were approximately 79.54% and 94.54% for OWP and OWPSA, respectively, highlighting the positive impact of alginate on adsorption capacity. Utilizing statistical physics isotherm models, particularly the single-layer model coupled to real gas (SLMRG), allowed us to robustly fit the experimental data, providing insights into the adsorption mechanisms. Thermodynamic parameters affirmed the spontaneity and endothermic nature of the processes. Adsorption kinetics were interpreted effectively using the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model. Molecular modeling investigations, including the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS), density functional theory (DFT), and atom-in-molecule (AIM) analysis, unveiled intricate molecular interactions among the adsorbent components—cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and alginate—and the pollutant Cu2+, confirming their physically interactive nature. These findings emphasize the synergistic application of experimental and theoretical approaches, providing a comprehensive understanding of copper adsorption dynamics at the molecular level. Abstract

This work is a component of the development of the aerial parts (leaves and stems) of Oudneya africanaR., of the Brassicaceae family. For that purpose, the total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant activities (DPPH, ABTS, β-carotene, and phenanthroline assays), and antimicrobial activity of the ethanolic extracts of this plant were evaluated. Ethanolic leaf extract had a higher quantity of phenolics (69.75 ± 1.87 μg GAE/mg) and flavonoids (91.88 ± 1.94 μg QE/mg) than stem extract. Despite their significant antioxidant activities, leaf and stem ethanolic extracts had a weaker capacity to block the DPPH radical, as well as the ABTS radical, the β-carotene-linoleate bleaching assay, and the phenanthroline test, than industrial antioxidants, namely butylhydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylhydroxyanisole (BHA). The remarkable antioxidant activity was observed in ethanolic stem extract on the ABTS assay with an IC50 value of 15.90 μg/mL and in the β-carotene with an IC50 value of 20.21 μg/mL. The ethanolic extract from leaves and stems showed excellent antibacterial activity against Candida albicans, with inhibition diameters of 13 mm and 12 mm, respectively. This work comprises a preliminary investigation, and as such, it suggests Oudneya africanaR. as a potential candidate for having antibacterial and antioxidant properties and also draws attention to the potential value of using this plant as a traditional treatment.

Abstract

The present work described the enhanced photodegradation of the Congo Red (CR) dye under visible light irradiation. The co-doped ceria (Ce0.7La0.15Ca0.15O2−δ) was prepared by the colloidal solution combustion synthesis way using colloidal silica as a template. The characterization of the as-synthesized cerium oxide (CeO2, known as ceria) nanoparticles was assessed by diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis, thermοgravimetric analysis, ultraviolet (UV)–visible spectroscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. It revealed the cubic spinel structure with space group Fd-3 m (JCPDS card No. 34-0394), average size between 23 and 92 nm, and bandgap energy from 2.69 to 2.73 eV. The photodegradation of the CR dye under solar irradiation allowed studying the photocatalytic activities of the prepared ceria. After 180 min of light irradiation with the ceria 2 catalyst, CR absorbance was almost nil. The highest degradation rate ∼13.7 × 10−4 min−1 was recorded using co-doped ceria prepared with adding 1.0 ml of colloidal silica. This exciting activity can be attributed to the smallest particle size ∼23 nm, the smallest lattice parameter a = 5.4511 Å, and the catalyst's highest bandgap ∼2.73 eV. Based on the investigation, ceria 2 nanoparticles have many possible uses in wastewater cleaning agent.
