Abstract

Decontaminating food packaging surfaces is a crucial step in the food processing industry to ensure the quality and safety of the product. Decontamination is intended as a procedure aimed to reduce the microbial load present on contaminated packaging to a safe level. Several techniques are traditionally employed, but the industry is seeking innovative methods that could offer economic and environmental benefits. Cold plasma is emerging as a promising solution among the range of possibilities. The present review aims to assess the effectiveness of plasma-assisted systems for decontaminating packaging materials. A systematic collection of inherent records was carried out, and the study outcomes were extracted using the protocol for meta-analysis. The synthesis of the results demonstrates the efficacy of this sanitation technique, since the average logarithmic reduction of the pathogen charge on the packaging was above 4. This outcome is promising since it aligns with standard requirements for traditionally employed antiseptics. Abstract

We report on a methodology for measuring the energy dissipated per AC high voltage cycle in a cold atmospheric pressure plasma jet (CAPJet). This method is adapted from research by Nisol et al. on plasma polymerization of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) organosilicon vapor in a large area planar dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. Here too, we measured ΔEg, the energy difference with and without small HMDSO vapor concentrations in the argon carrier gas flow. From ΔEg we then derived Em, the energy per molecule, and compared values with those of Nisol. Good agreements were found, including in film structures determined from attenuated total reflectance (ATR) Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, thus suggesting that realistic Em values can be successfully obtained also for the CAPJet case. Abstract

Finding proper strategies to control plasma polymerization processes is a crucial aspect to produce thin films with tailored characteristics. In this work, the validity of the Yasuda parameter W/FM (W: discharge power and FM: precursor feed rate) as a controlling parameter for a polymerization process assisted by an atmospheric pressure single electrode plasma jet and the aerosolized fluorinated silane precursor trimethoxy(3,3,3‐trifluoropropyl)silane is demonstrated. The properties of thin films deposited under different W/FM values are discussed using attenuated total reflectance—Fourier transform infrared (ATR‐FTIR) spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), water contact angle (WCA) measurements, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results suggest the presence of two deposition domains as a function of W/FM (an energy‐deficient domain and a monomer‐deficient domain), each inducing coatings with different chemical and physical properties. Furthermore, coatings deposited under the same W/FM values exhibit similar characteristics regardless of the power and feed rate values adopted. Considering the potential use of the deposited coatings to increase the antiadhesive properties of implantable medical devices, preliminary results on coatings' antiadhesive activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are presented. Abstract

Surveillance Capitalism permeates every aspect of our lives. Our behavior is getting recorded, analyzed and used to influence our choices. How can we raise people’s awareness in regards to Behavioral Tracking and the implication that it can have in their lives, allowing them to steer towards a more conscious interaction with digital media? And again, how can all of this be achieved on mobile devices, without disrupting the user freedom and offering a meaningful experience?” Through User Experience and Behavioral design method,this Master thesis tries to give an answer to those two questions. Research has been conducted through different methods such as semi-structured interviews, user testing, observation, literature review,and desktop research.The resulting product is PanOp,a mobile app which, as in a "who will watch the watchers?" situation, tracks the activity of behavioral tracking apps, providing useful data to the user, who can become more aware of what behavioral tracking is, how it affects his life, and decide to take steps to regain his freedom.

Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the use of a cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) source in a clinically realistic endodontic procedure to enhance the bond strength of a dental adhesive in root canal restoration. Materials and Methods: CAP was generated by a handheld DBD-jet prototype specifically designed for biomedical applications. Extracted monoradicular teeth were standardized through crown sectioning and root canal shaping before being embedded in epoxy resin cylinders using a custom molding procedure designed to ensure the accurate alignment of the specimens. Afterwards, the dentin surface was conditioned according to different protocols including (or not, in controls) chelating agents (EDTA or IP6) and CAP treatment (180 s). Then a self-etch adhesive was applied, followed by a luting material to seal the root canal. Both materials were light cured. Tooth sections were obtained from coronal and middle portions of the root canal, and the push-out test was used to evaluate the bond strength between the adhesive and dentin. Results: Push-out results demonstrated that plasma treatment greatly improved (> twofold) the mechanical properties of the adhesive-dentin interface along the whole length of the root canal. Contact angle measurements and SEM analyses showed that plasma treatment facilitated adhesive permeation into dentinal tubules, hence enhancing the effects of the bonding procedure. Conclusions: Although investigations on long-term bond stability after CAP treatment and clinical studies are required, the present study indicates that CAP devices may be useful in clinical endodontic treatment. Abstract

Bioaerosols (aerosolized particles with biological origin) are strongly suspected to play a significant role in the transmission of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), especially in closed indoor environments. Thus, control technologies capable of effectively inactivating bioaerosols are urgently needed. In this regard, cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) can represent a suitable option, thanks to its ability to produce reactive species, which can exert antimicrobial action. In this study, results; on the total inactivation of SARS‐CoV‐2 contained in bioaerosols treated using CAP generated in air are reported, demonstrating the possible use of CAP systems for the control of SARS‐CoV‐2 diffusion through bioaerosols. Abstract

CuO is a versatile p-type material for energy applications capable of imparting diverse functionalities by manipulating its band-energy diagram. We present ultra-small quantum confined cupric oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) synthesized via a simple one-step environmentally friendly atmospheric pressure microplasma synthesis process. The proposed method, based on the use of a hybrid plasma-liquid cell, enables the synthesis of CuO NPs directly from solid metal copper in ethanol with neither surfactants nor reducing agents. CuO NPs films are then used for the first time in all-inorganic third generation solar cell devices demonstrating highly effective functionalities as blocking layer.

Abstract

Based on the comparison of simulative and experimental data, an approach is presented for the design and optimization of processes assisted by low power atmospheric pressure Radio Frequency (RF) thermal plasmas. High Speed Imaging (HSI), Schlieren Imaging (SI), and temperature measurement on the surface of the substrate are performed to characterize the effect of the interaction of the RF torch effluent with a substrate placed downstream of the torch outlet. The related processes are simulated in 2-D axisymmetric and 3-D domains for different operating conditions, for the plasma generation region and for the downstream region, respectively. The comparison of numerical and experimental results is used to in depth characterize and investigate the behavior of the effluent of the RF torch.
