Drostanolone is a popular synthetic dihydrotestosterone derivative and an anabolic–androgenic agent which belongs to the steroid class. The crystal structure of a new polymorph of the esterified prodrug of drostanolone, namely drostanolone enanthate, was elucidated using single crystal X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, it was analyzed using the thermal DTA/TGA technique and FT-IR spectroscopy.

Fenpiverinium is an agent which, from a medical perspective, has anticholinergic and antispasmodic properties, with applications in the treatment of smooth muscle spasm. The crystal and molecular structures of two fenpiverinium-based crystals, namely fenpiverinium bromide and fenpiverinium bromide hemihydrate, were elucidated and explored by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Borsec is one of the most important mineral water spa resorts in Romania and is also an important mineral water bottling facility. There are several public springs with significant mineral content. The present paper focuses on mineral powder extraction by the drying of water samples collected from springs no. 3, 5, 6, 10, and 11. These springs have a continuous flow being available for everyone who wants to fill a bottle; meanwhile, the rest of the water is discarded into the river. Thus, the dissolved ions such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, and Cl− are wasted. This study aims to investigate the possibility of mineral content extraction as crystalline powder by drying. The dissolved ions’ reaction with carbonic acid generates carbonates which crystallize progressively with the water evaporation. Mineralogical investigation including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and polarized light optical microscopy (POM) reveal that calcite (rhombohedral and pseudo-hexagonal crystals of about 5–25 µm) is the dominant mineral followed by pseudo-dolomite (columnar crystals of about 5–20 µm), aragonite (rhombic and granular crystals of 2.5–15 µm), and natron (prismatic crystals of about 5–20 µm), in addition to small amounts of halite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation combined with energy dispersive (EDS) elemental analysis indicates that traces of K are uniformly distributed in the calcite mass and some S traces for springs 3 and 11 are distributed predominantly into the pseudo-dolomite crystals. The crystalline germs precipitate from the supersaturated solution via homogeneous germination and progressively grow. The latest stage is characterized by the formation of a dendritic crust of calcite mixed with halite that embeds the individually grown crystals. The amount of the formed crystals strongly depends on the water’s total dissolved solids (TDS) and salinity: the springs with high TDS and salinity form a large number of crystals and spectacular dendritic crusts such as spring 10 followed by springs 6 and 5. Lower mineralization was observed in springs 3 and 5, which was related with the S traces. Also, it is evident that mineralization is seasonally dependent: the mineral amount was lower in November 2023 than for the samples collected in March 2024. The obtained mineral powder might be used for spa baths or for the electrolytic balance regulation in dietary supplements due to the high calcium and magnesium content.

Agricultural waste from the fruit and vegetable industry is used as an alternative source of animal feed, but detailed investigations are required. The aim of this work was to conduct a physico-chemical characterization, through analytical techniques, of fruit and vegetable wastes such as those of golden apples, red apples, carrots, celery, beetroots, and red potato peels. The bioactive compounds in the samples indicated a high carbohydrate content of 50.38 g/100 g in golden apples and 59.38 mg/100 g of organic acids in celery. In addition, the total phenolic content (TPC, mg gallic acid equivalent/g dry weight) varied between 3.72 in celery and 15.51 in beetroots. The antioxidant capacity values were significant. A thermal analysis showed thermal stability and weight loss, underscoring the composition of the solid samples. An infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis showed C-H, O-H, C=O, and N-H functional groups in non-starchy carbohydrates, organic acids, and proteins. Microscopic techniques revealed the microstructure, particle size, and semicrystalline profile of the samples. The ultrastructure (determined via atomic force microscopy (AFM)) of celery consisted of a smooth and uniform surface with a lignin and cellulose texture. These results highlight the importance of fruit and vegetable waste as an alternative source of essential nutrients and bioactive compounds for animal feed.

GW501516, also known by the name of cardarine, is a synthetic peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor delta (PPR-δ) agonist agent developed for applications in the treatment of metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases. A broad polymorph screening in various solvents and mixtures was completed in order to explore its capabilities to grow polymorphs. The crystal structures of four polymorphs were elucidated using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, while one structure was solved via a powder X-ray diffraction method. The solid state features (nature of intermolecular interactions) were investigated by computational methods. The polymorphs were further investigated by thermal DSC analysis and X-ray diffraction on powders. From a pharmaceutical perspective, the stability and solubility of the polymorphs were analyzed as well.

Oxymetholone [C21H32O3] and metribolone [C19H24O2] are synthetic anabolic-androgenic agents which are included in the steroid class. Their ability to form new solid forms and their possibility to be included in host-guest β-cyclodextrin complexes was explored. The recrystallization of the compounds in a wide variety of solvents was accomplished. Two oxymetholone polymorphs and one oxymetholone acetic acid solvate were obtained:, while metribolone is reported only in the starting form. Their crystal structures were elucidated using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and the energies of intermolecular interactions were analyzed. Moreover, oxymetholone also showed the ability to be complexed in a new form of oxymetholone-β-cyclodextrin complex. The materials were also investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, DSC/DTA/TGA analysis, and FT-IR spectroscopy.

Nandrolone (Estr-4-en-17β-ol-3-one) is a derivative of testosterone and a naturally occurring anabolic–androgenic agent which belongs to the steroid group. Crystal structures of four short, medium and long esterified forms of nandrolone, including propionate, phenylpropionate, cypionate and undecanoate were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Crystal packing, supramolecular features and intermolecular interactions were described based on a quantitative and qualitative Hirshfeld surfaces analysis accompanied by evaluation of crystal energies and intermolecular interactions computation. Also, the solubility of the esters was investigated from a pharmaceutical perspective.

ZnxMn1-xFe2O4@SiO2 nanocomposites (NCs) (x = 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00) were prepared by eco-friendly sol–gel synthesis followed by heat treatment at different temperatures and characterized. The X-ray diffraction shows poorly crystallized ferrite after the heat treatment at low temperatures and highly crystalline ferrite accompanied by several secondary phases at high temperatures. The crystallite size increases from 2.4 to 45.2 nm with the increase of heat treatment temperature. The specific surface decreases from 281 to 13 m2/g with the increase of the heat treatment temperature, reaching values below 1 m2/g at 1200 °C. All NCs have pores within the mesoporous range, with high dispersion of pores’ sizes. The NCs show ferrimagnetic behavior, close to the superparamagentic limit. The main magnetic parameters, saturation magnetization, remanence, coercivity and magnetic anisotropy constant of ZnxMn1-xFe2O4@SiO2 nanoparticles increase with the increase of particle size and heat treatment temperature and decrease with increase of Zn content. This behavior could be explained presuming that the Zn2+, Mn2+ and Fe3+ ions can simultaneously occupy both the tetrahedral and octahedral sites in the ZnxMn1-xFe2O4 ferrite.

The present study aimed to develop 3D printed dosage forms, using custom-made filaments loaded with diclofenac sodium (DS). The printed tablets were developed by implementing a quality by design (QbD) approach. Filaments with adequate FDM 3D printing characteristics were produced via hot melt extrusion (HME). Their formulation included DS as active substance, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a polymer, different types of plasticisers (mannitol, erythritol, isomalt, maltodextrin and PEG) and superdisintegrants (crospovidone and croscarmellose sodium). The physicochemical and mechanical properties of the extruded filaments were investigated through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and tensile measurements. In addition, cylindrical-shaped and tubular-shaped 3D dosage forms were printed, and their dissolution behaviour was assessed via various drug release kinetic models. DSC and XRD results demonstrated the amorphous dispersion of DS into the polymeric filaments. Moreover, the 3D printed tablets, regardless of their composition, exhibited a DS release of nearly 90% after 45 min at pH 6.8, while their release behaviour was effectively described by the Korsmeyer–Peppas model. Notably, the novel tube design, which was anticipated to increase the drug release rate, proved the opposite based on the in vitro dissolution study results. Additionally, the use of crospovidone increased DS release rate, whereas croscarmellose sodium decreased it.

Dacian civilization flourished on the actual territory of Romania during the Late Iron Age and had its peak from the first century BC to the first century AD. They had intensive relations with Hellenistic and Roman civilizations. Therefore, it is difficult to evaluate the origin of some widely spread artifacts discovered in the Dacian archeological sites. The present research is focused on two bronze artifacts (a bronze coin and a mirror fragment) found in the Alun-Piatra Rosie site and a silver coin found in the Ardeu site. Artifacts were investigated with nondestructive methods such as SEM-EDX for microstructural and elemental characterization, and the crystalline phases were investigated using XRD. Bronze coin proves to be an Istrian issue having an elemental composition of 75.0% Cu, 20.8% Sn, and 4.1% Pb, which corresponds to a structure of Cu grains mixed with Cu5.6Sn grains. The bronze mirror fragment has an elemental composition of 52.3% Cu and 47.7% Sn, which corresponds to a structure containing grains of Cu6Sn5 mixed with grains of Cu41Sn11. It has a smooth surface that was investigated with AFM microscopy, which evidences a Ra roughness of 51 nm for the patina surface and 33.7 nm for the clean metal surface, proving the high quality of the original mirror luster of the artifact. The silver coin was identified as a Radulesti–Hunedoara type meaning that it was produced in local Dacian metallurgic workshops. It has an elemental composition of 63.1% Ag, 25.3% Sn, 7.8% Cu, and small traces of P and Fe, which corresponds to a structure of Ag grains and Ag3Sn grains. Silver coins show that Dacians uses Sn as alloying element in their metallurgic workshops. Istrian bronze coin proves to be typical for Hellenistic or Roman bronze type with Sn content no more than 25% Sn. The bronze mirror fragment has an unusual composition that might be a result of al local metal charge elaboration with several Hellenistic and Roman bronze pieces as raw material and an extra Sn addition during the melting process. This material facilitates the polishing properties of the active surface that has a very low roughness even after 2000 years of ground resting and adherent oxides patina.

Testosterone (17β-Hydroxyandrost-4-en-3-one) is the primary male anabolic-androgenic steroid. The crystal structures of two medium and two long esterified forms of testosterone, including enanthate, cypionate, decanoate and undecanoate, were determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction. The samples were also characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy and thermal analysis (DTA, TG). Crystal packings and supramolecular features were described. The analysis of structural features was accomplished by computational methods in terms of the type of intermolecular interactions, crystal energies and Hirshfeld surfaces analysis. From a pharmaceutical point of view, the solubility of compounds was investigated.

Mucoadhesive films loaded with doxycycline hyclate (Doxy Hyc), consisting of mixtures of hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (HPMC) E3, K4 and polyacrylic acid (Carbopol 940), were prepared by casting method, aiming to design a formulation intended for application in the oral cavity. The obtained film formulations exhibited a Doxy Hyc content between 7.52 ± 0.42 and 7.83 ± 0.41%, which had adequate mechanical properties for application in the oral cavity and pH values in the tolerance range. The x-ray diffraction studies highlighted the amorphisation of Doxy Hyc in the preparation process and the antibiotic particles present on the surface of the films, identified in the TEM images, which ensured a burst release effect in the first 15 min of the in vitro dissolution studies, after which Doxy Hyc was released by diffusion, the data presenting a good correlation with the Peppas model, n < 0.5. The formulation F1, consisting of HPMC K4 combined with C940 in a ratio of 5:3, the most performing in vitro, was tested in vivo in experimentally-induced periodontitis and demonstrated its effectiveness in improving the clinical parameters and reducing the salivary levels of matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8). The prepared Doxy Hyc loaded mucoadhesive buccal film could be used as an adjuvant for the local treatment of periodontitis, ensuring prolonged release of the antibiotic after topical application.

In this study the adsorption and photodegradation capabilities of modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), using tartrazine as a model pollutant, is demonstrated. MWCNT-COOH/Fe3O4 and MWCNT-COOH/Fe3O4/NiO nanocomposites were prepared by precipitation of metal oxides in the presence of MWCNTs. Their properties were examined by X-ray diffraction in powder (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron-based Scanning PhotoElectron Microscopy (SPEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. It was found that the optimal adsorption conditions were pH 4 for MWCNT-COOH/Fe3O4 and pH 3 for MWCNT-COOH/Fe3O4/NiO, temperature 25 °C, adsorbent dose 1 g L−1, initial concentration of tartrazine 5 mg L−1 for MWCNT-COOH/Fe3O4 and 10 mg L−1 for MWCNT-COOH/Fe3O4/NiO and contact time 5 min for MWCNT-COOH/Fe3O4/NiO and 15 min for MWCNT-COOH/Fe3O4. Moreover, the predominant degradation process was elucidated simultaneously, with and without simulated sunlight irradiation, using thermal lens spectrometry (TLS) and UV–Vis absorption spectrophotometry. The results indicated the prevalence of the photodegradation mechanism over adsorption from the beginning of the degradation process.

Magnetite nanoparticles and clusters of nanoparticles have been of Increasing scientific interest in the past decades. In order to prepare nanoparticles and clusters that are stable in suspension, different coatings have been used. Phosphates and phosphonates are a preferred anchoring group for the coating of magnetite nanomaterials. However, poly(vinylphosphonates) have rarely been used as a coating agent for any nanoparticles. Here, poly(methylvinylphosphonate) and other substituted polyvinylphosphonates are described as new coatings for magnetite nanoparticles and clusters. They show great stability in aqueous suspension. This is also the first time phosphonate-coated magnetite clusters have been synthesized in a one-pot polyol reaction. The coated magnetite nanoparticles and clusters have been characterized by TEM, EDX, FTIR, magnetization measurement, XRD as well as XPS. It has been shown that substituted vinylphosphonates can be easily synthesized in one-step procedures and as a polymeric coating can imbue important properties such as stability in suspension, tight binding to the particle surface, the ability to be further functionalized or to tightly adsorb metal ions. For the synthesis of magnetite clusters the cluster formation, polymerization and coating are done in a one-pot reaction and the resulting magnetite clusters show a higher amount of phosphonate coating than with a three-step procedure including a ligand exchange.

Nowadays, the discovery of a new non-toxic metal complex with biological activity represents a very active area of research. Two Cu+2 complexes, [Cu(L1)2(H2O)3] (C1) (HL1= N-(5-(4-methylphenyl)-[1,3,4]–thiadiazole–2-yl)-naphtalenesulfonamide) and [Cu(L2)2(py)2(H2O)] (C2) (HL2= N-(5-ethyl-[1,3,4]–thiadiazole–2-yl)-naphtalenesulfonamide), with two new ligands were synthesized. The X-ray crystal structures of the complexes were determined. In both complexes, Cu+2 is five-coordinated, forming a CuN2O3 and CuN4O chromophore, respectively. The ligands act as monodentate, coordinating the metal ion through a single Nthiadiazole atom; for the C2 complex, the molecules from the reaction medium (pyridine and water) are also involved in the coordination of Cu+2. The complexes have a distorted square pyramidal square-planar geometry. The compounds were characterized by FT-IR, electronic EPR spectroscopy, and magnetic methods. The nuclease activity studies confirm the complexes’ capacity to cleave the DNA molecule. Using a xanthine-xanthine oxydase system, the SOD mimetic activity of the complexes was demonstrated. Cytotoxicity studies were carried out on two tumor cell lines (HeLa, WM35) and on a normal cell line (HFL1) using the MTT method, with cisplatin used as a positive control. The antibacterial activity of the complexes was investigated against two Gram-positive and two Gram-negative bacteria, and compared with Amoxicillin and Norfloxacin using the disk diffusion method. Both complexes showed in vitro biological activity but the C2 complex was more active. A lack of in vivo toxicity was demonstrated for the C2 complex by performing hepatic, renal, and hematological studies on Swiss mice.

The present work aims to follow the influence of TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) on bioactive compounds, the elemental content of wheat, and on wheat leaves’ ultrastructure. Synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The concentration of phenolic compounds, assimilation pigments, antioxidant capacity, elemental content, as well as the ultrastructural changes that may occur in the wheat plants grown in the presence or absence of TiO2 NPs were evaluated. In plants grown in the presence of TiO2 NPs, the amount of assimilating pigments and total polyphenols decreased compared to the control sample, while the antioxidant activity of plants grown in amended soil was higher than those grown in control soil. Following ultrastructural analysis, no significant changes were observed in the leaves of TiO2-treated plants. Application of TiO2 NPs to soil caused a significant reaction of the plant to stress conditions. This was revealed by the increase of antioxidant capacity and the decrease of chlorophyll, total polyphenols, and carotenoids. Besides, the application of TiO2 NPs led to significant positive (K, Zn, Br, and Mo) and negative (Na, Mn, Fe, As, Sr, Sb, and Ba) variation of content.

The structure, morphology and magnetic properties of (Ni0.6Mn0.4Fe2O4)α(SiO2)100−α (α = 0–100%) nanocomposites (NCs) produced by sol-gel synthesis were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). At low calcination temperatures (300 °C), poorly crystallized Ni0.6Mn0.4Fe2O4, while at high calcination temperatures, well-crystallized Ni0.6Mn0.4Fe2O4 was obtained along with α-Fe2O3, quartz, cristobalite or iron silicate secondary phase, depending on the Ni0.6Mn0.4Fe2O4 content in the NCs. The average crystallite size increases from 2.6 to 74.5 nm with the increase of calcination temperature and ferrite content embedded in the SiO2 matrix. The saturation magnetization (Ms) enhances from 2.5 to 80.5 emu/g, the remanent magnetization (MR) from 0.68 to 12.6 emu/g and the coercive field (HC) from 126 to 260 Oe with increasing of Ni0.6Mn0.4Fe2O4 content in the NCs. The SiO2 matrix has a diamagnetic behavior with a minor ferromagnetic fraction, Ni0.6Mn0.4Fe2O4 embedded in SiO2 matrix displays superparamagnetic behavior, while unembedded Ni0.6Mn0.4Fe2O4 has a high-quality ferromagnetic behavior.

Four N-doped graphene materials with a nitrogen content ranging from 8.34 to 13.1 wt.% are prepared by the ball milling method. This method represents an eco-friendly mechanochemical process that can be easily adapted for industrial-scale productivity and allows both the exfoliation of graphite and the synthesis of large quantities of functionalized graphene. These materials are characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetry measurements, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy, and then, are tested towards the oxygen reduction reaction by cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode methods. Their responses towards ORR are analysed in correlation with their properties and use for the best ORR catalyst identification. However, even though the mechanochemical procedure and the characterization techniques are clean and green methods (i.e., water is the only solvent used for these syntheses and investigations), they are time consuming and, generally, a low number of materials can be prepared, characterized and tested. In order to eliminate some of these limitations, the use of regression learner and reverse engineering methods are proposed for facilitating the optimization of the synthesis conditions and the materials’ design. Thus, the machine learning algorithms are applied to data containing the synthesis parameters, the results obtained from different characterization techniques and the materials response towards ORR to quickly provide predictions that allow the best synthesis conditions or the best electrocatalysts’ identification.

Iron slag samples unearthed from archaeological sites lying on the Eastern limes sector of Roman Dacia (the Brâncoveneşti and Călugăreni auxiliary forts and the Vătava watchtower) were studied in order to assess the probability of local iron working (smelting and smithing) during the 2nd–3rd centuries CE. Structural-mineralogic aspects revealed by PXRD analysis and FTIR spectroscopy indicate different slag types corresponding to different iron production and processing stages allowing the supposition that refining of the bloom and processing of the refined iron took place on the sites. The FTIR absorption bands obtained in the spectral domain 2000–400 cm−1 show that mineralogically the samples are constituted mainly of silicates associated with minor quantities of aluminates and carbonates. The fayalite, haematite, and magnetite phases appearing on both the X-ray diffractograms and the FTIR spectra agree with the redox conditions of the slag formation process which result from the Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio determined using the EPR-method. The bulk macro-elemental PXRF and ICP-MS spectroscopy data support the slag typization proposed on the basis of the probable working conditions; trace-elemental bulk composition suggests that the provenance of the raw materials may be different.

2α-Methyl-4,5α-dihydrotestosterone 17β-propionate, known as drostanolone propionate or masteron, is a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid derived from dihydrotestosterone. The crystal structures of two polymorphs of drostanolone propionate have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and both crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system. One is belonging to the P21 space group, Z = 2, and has one molecule in the asymmetric unit while the second belongs to the I2 space group, Z = 4, and contains two molecules in the asymmetric unit. Another polymorph has been investigated by an X-ray powder diffraction method and solved by Parallel tempering/Monte Carlo technique and refined with the Rietveld method. This polymorph crystallizes in the orthorhombic P212121 space group, Z = 4 having one molecule in the asymmetric unit. The structural configuration analysis shows that the A, B, and C steroid rings exist as chair geometry, while ring D adopts a C13 distorted envelope configuration in all structures. For all polymorphs, the lattice energy has been computed by CLP (Coulomb-London-Pauli), and tight-binding density functional theory methods. Local electron correlation methods were used to estimate the role of electron correlation in the magnitude of the dimer energies. The nature of the intermolecular interactions has been analyzed by the SAPT0 energy decomposition methods as well as by Hirshfeld surfaces.

Five new copper(II) acrylate complexes (acr is the acrylate anion: C3H3O2) with imidazole derivatives (2-methylimidazole/2-MeIm, 5-methylimidazole/5-MeIm, 2-ethylimidazole/2-EtIm) of type: cis-[Cu(2-RIm)2(acr)2]·xH2O ((1): R = ⁻CH3, x = 2; (4): R = ⁻CH2⁻CH3, x = 0), trans-[Cu(2-RIm)2(acr)2] ((2): R = ⁻CH3; (5): R = ⁻CH2⁻CH3) and trans-[Cu(5-RIm)2(acr)2] ((3): R = ⁻CH3) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometry (FTIR), Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), electronic reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and mass spectrometry. The single crystal X-ray diffraction study of complexes (2) and (5) reveals that the copper(II) ion is located on an inversion center and show elongated octahedral geometry completed by two coplanar bidentate acrylates and two unidentate imidazole derivatives displayed in trans positions. For complex (4) the single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the copper(II) ion is in a distorted octahedral environment which can be easily confused with a trigonal prism completed by two bidentate acrylates and two unidentate imidazole derivatives displayed in cis positions. These results indicate the fact that complexes (4) and (5) are the geometric isomers of the same compound bis(acrylate)-bis(2-ethylimidazole)-copper(II). Complexes (1) and (2), as well as (4) and (5), were produced simultaneously in the reaction of the corresponding copper(II) acrylate with imidazole derivatives in methanol solution. Furthermore, in order to be able to formulate potential applications of the obtained compounds, our next goal was to investigate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of the synthesized complexes against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungal strains, of both clinical and ecological importance (biodeterioration of historical buildings). The trans isomers (2) and (5), followed by (4) have shown the broadest range of antimicrobial activity. In case of (1) and (2) isomers, the trans isomer (2) was significantly more active than cis (1), while the cis isomer (4) proved to be more active than trans (5). Taken together, the biological evaluation results indicate that the trans (2) was the most active complex, demonstrating its potential for the development of novel antimicrobial agents, with potential applications in the biomedical and restoration of architectural monuments fields.

The aim of this paper is obtaining and characterizing hydrogels based on different ratios of oxidized alginate (oA) and k-carrageenan (C), chemically cross-linked with adipic dihydrazide (adh). The alginate (A) was first oxidized with sodium metaperiodate in order to transform it into the dialdehyde derivative, a more reactive compound than alginate. A known procedure for oxidation of alginate with sodium metaperiodate in ethanol-water in order to improve alginate reactivity by transforming the hydroxyl end-groups into dialdehyde was used, preceded by a partially cleavage of the alginate chains. In the second stage, the mixture of dialdehydic derivative of oxidized alginate, k-carrageenan and glycerol subjected to reaction with adipic dihydrazide leads to a Semi-Interpenetrated Network covalently cross-linked alginate/k-carrageenan hydrogel (oACadh), based on the dihydrazone compound which is responsible for the chemical cross-linking. Pure alginate, k-carrageenan, oxidized alginate, adipic dihydrazide and the cross-linked hydrogel were characterized by: FTIR, XRD, and SEM.

Magnetite nanoparticles are of great importance in nanotechnology and nanomedicine and have found manifold applications. Here, the effect of coating of magnetite nanoparticles with organic stabilizers, such as O-phosphoryl ethanolamine, glycerol phosphate, phospho-l-ascorbic acid, phospho-d,l-serine, glycolic acid, lactic acid, d,l-malic acid, and d,l-mandelic acid was studied. Remarkably, this procedure led to an improvement of saturation magnetization in three cases rather than to an unfavorable decrease as usually observed. Detailed X-ray powder diffraction investigations revealed that changes in the average crystallite occurred in the coating process. Surprisingly, changes of the average crystallite sizes in either direction were further observed, when the exposure time to the stabilizer was increased. These results imply a new mechanism for the well-known coating of magnetite nanoparticles with stabilizers. Instead of the hitherto accepted simple anchoring of the stabilizers to the magnetite nanoparticle surfaces, a more complex recrystallization mechanism is likely, wherein partial re-dispersion of magnetite moieties from the nanoparticles and re-deposition are involved. The results can help producers and users of magnetite nanoparticles to obtain optimal results in the production of core shell magnetite nanoparticles.

The title salt, C14H31N2+·C15H9O7−, was obtained in the reaction of quercetin with n-butylamine in a mixture of acetone and hexane. The crystal structure determination shows that the quercetin donates one of its phenol H atoms to the N-butyl-4-butylimino-2-methylpentan-2-amine molecule. The crystal structure of the salt is stabilized by intramolecular (N—H...N for the cation and O—H...O for the anion) and intermolecular hydrogen bonding (N—H...O between cation–anion pairs and O—H...O between anions). Quercetin molecules form dimers connected into a two-dimensional network. The dihedral angle between the quercetin ring systems is 19.61 (8)°.
