Objectives Hyperandrogenism, a key feature of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), is caused by excess androgen secretion, most commonly of ovarian origin. Although the serum total testosterone (TT) levels have long been used as a traditional measure of hyperandrogenemia in women with PCOS, it is associated with many fallacies due to the fact that a component of TT is linked to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). Recent research has discovered that measuring free testosterone levels and computing the free androgen index (FAI), which is a ratio of TT and SHBG, are better predictors of androgen excess in PCOS. The aim of this meta-analysis is to determine the association of FAI in diagnosing hyperandrogenism and its ability to discriminate PCOS from controls. Materials and Methods The publicly available databases PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science were searched using MeSH terms, 'Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome' OR 'PCOS' OR 'PCOD' AND 'Testosterone' AND 'Sex Hormone Binding Globulin' OR 'SHBG' to collect the full-text articles for the retrieval of related data of case–control and cross-sectional studies. The studies quality was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa scale, and a sub-group analysis and publication bias between the studies was evaluated by funnel plot. Statistical Analysis The R program (v4.0.3) and R packages 'metafor' and 'dmetar' were used for statistical analyses of quantitative data and the plots were generated using 'ggplot2' package through a comparison of pooled SMD by Egger's linear regression and Beggs-Mazumdar tests. Results Twenty-four studies involving 7,847 participants including 3,290 controls and 4,557 PCOS were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled data analysis of the included studies showed that the PCOS women had higher FAI than controls, with SMD of 1.56 (95%CI 1.08–2.04; p < 0.01). The publication bias was tested using a funnel plot and Egger's regression asymmetry test, which revealed no risk of publishing bias (p = 0.1727). Additionally, the sub-group meta-analysis of geographic region revealed that FAI levels were more significant in PCOS subjects of Asia and Europe, compared with the American region. Conclusion Overall, this meta-analysis indicates that FAI could be a reliable marker to differentiate PCOS patients from controls in Asian and European ethnicities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Members of the genus Alteromonas are widely distributed in diverse marine environments and are often associated with marine organisms. Their ability to produce exopolysaccharides (EPS) and depolymerize sulfated algal polysaccharides has provided industrial importance to some species. Here, we describe the draft genome of an algae-associated strain namely, Alteromonas sp. PRIM-21 isolated from the southwest coast of India to understand the EPS biosynthetic pathways as well as polysaccharide depolymerization system in comparison to the closely related strain Alteromonas fortis 1T that shares 99.8% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Whole-genome shotgun sequencing of Alteromonas sp. PRIM-21 yielded 50 contigs with a total length of 4,638,422 bp having 43.86% GC content. The resultant genome shared 95.9% OrthoANI value with A. fortis 1 T, and contained 4125 predicted protein-coding genes, 71 tRNA and 10 rRNA genes. Genes involved in Wzx/Wzy-, ABC transporter- and synthase-dependent pathways for EPS production and secretion were common in both Alteromonas sp. PRIM-21 and A. fortis 1T. However, the distribution of carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) was heterogeneous. The strain PRIM-21 harbored polysaccharide lyases for the degradation of alginate, ulvan, arabinogalactan and chondroitin. This was further validated from the culture-based assays using seven different polysaccharides. The depolymerizing ability of the bacteria may be useful in deriving nutrients from the biopolymers produced in the algal host while the EPS biosynthesis may provide additional advantages for life in the stressful marine environment. The comprehensive bioinformatics analysis of breast cancer exosomes revealed that HSP90AA1, CCT2, and ENO1 were novel hub genes in the giant protein–protein interaction network of 110 exosomal proteins. Exosomes and their cargo such as discrete proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids are having potential role in the pathophysiology of breast cancer (BC). This study showed that the identified hub genes were particularly abundant in GO and KEGG pathways relevant to the positive regulation of telomerase. In addition, these hub genes were found to be considerably overexpressed in breast adenocarcinoma patients compared to healthy controls, and further, this overexpression is linked to the poor prognosis in BC patients. Furthermore, the ROC analysis revealed that CCT2 gene has strong diagnostic and prognostic value for BC. Additionally, this in silico analysis found that the anticancer agents and HSP90 inhibitors such as ganetespib, retaspimycin, and tanespimycin would have considerable potential in the treatment of BC. Overall, this study findings imply that HSP90AA1, a molecular chaperon and CCT2, a chaperonin would serve as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers, respectively, for BC. The diverse heterotrophic fungi associated with the polyethene degradation in plastic polluted Mulki-Paavanje mangrove sites of southwest coast of India was isolated and identified by plating and micro/macroscopic observation. The fungal isolates were tested for their low-density polyethylene (LDPE) degrading ability under laboratory conditions. The screened fungal isolates were identified as Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. japonicus and A. niger. Over a 45-day period in shakerculture in laboratory conditions, their efficiency on the breakdown of commercially used carry bags of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was investigated. After 45 days, biodegradation was quantified in terms of average weight loss, which was 4%. The degradation ability of these fungi was further confirmed by the presence of porosity and fragility of LDPE films on SEM (Scanning electron microscopy) analysis. The maximum degradation of LDPE was by A. niger (4.04%) and A. japonicus (3.09%) in 45 days. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
