- Abstract
According to cognitive-dissonance theory, performing counterattitudinal behavior produces a state of dissonance that people are motivated to resolve, usually by changing their attitude to be in line with their behavior. One of the most popular experimental paradigms used to produce such attitude change is the induced-compliance paradigm. Despite its popularity, the replication crisis in social psychology and other fields, as well as methodological limitations associated with the paradigm, raise concerns about the robustness of classic studies in this literature. We therefore conducted a multilab constructive replication of the induced-compliance paradigm based on Croyle and Cooper (Experiment 1). In a total of 39 labs from 19 countries and 14 languages, participants (N = 4,898) were assigned to one of three conditions: writing a counterattitudinal essay under high choice, writing a counterattitudinal essay under low choice, or writing a neutral essay under high choice. The primary analyses failed to support the core hypothesis: No significant difference in attitude was observed after writing a counterattitudinal essay under high choice compared with low choice. However, we did observe a significant difference in attitude after writing a counterattitudinal essay compared with writing a neutral essay. Secondary analyses revealed the pattern of results to be robust to data exclusions, lab variability, and attitude assessment. Additional exploratory analyses were conducted to test predictions from cognitive-dissonance theory. Overall, the results call into question whether the induced-compliance paradigm provides robust evidence for cognitive dissonance.

The Gamer's Dilemma challenges us to justify the moral difference between enacting virtual murder and virtual child molestation in video games. The Dilemma relies for its argumentative force on the claim that there is an intuitive moral difference between these acts, with the former intuited as morally acceptable and the latter as morally unacceptable. However, there has been no empirical investigation of these claims. To explore these issues, we developed an experimental survey study in which participants were asked to reflect on imaginary video game scenarios as part of a 2 (undertake virtual murder or molestation) X 2 (against an adult or child) X 2 (in a high or low realism virtual environment) factorial design. We found that there was a significant difference between people's views about virtual murder and virtual molestation. Whether the virtual act was performed against an adult or child was non-significant in most conditions, whereas whether it was performed in a high or low realism virtual environment was significant in most conditions. Gender did not impact these results, whereas perceived gaming experience, hours of video game play per week, and integrity did. These results provide an empirical grounding for future discussions of the Gamer's Dilemma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The relation between religiosity and well-being is one of the most researched topics in the psychology of religion, yet the directionality and robustness of the effect remains debated. Here, we adopted a many-analysts approach to assess the robustness of this relation based on a new cross-cultural dataset (N = 10, 535 participants from 24 countries). We recruited 120 analysis teams to investigate (1) whether religious people self-report higher well-being, and (2) whether the relation between religiosity and self-reported well-being depends on perceived cultural norms of religion (i.e., whether it is considered normal and desirable to be religious in a given country). In a two-stage procedure, the teams first created an analysis plan and then executed their planned analysis on the data. For the first research question, all but 3 teams reported positive effect sizes with credible/confidence intervals excluding zero (median reported beta = 0.120). For the second research question, this was the case for 65% of the teams (median reported beta = 0.039). While most teams applied (multilevel) linear regression models, there was considerable variability in the choice of items used to construct the independent variables, the dependent variable, and the included covariates.

- Abstract
This large, international dataset contains survey responses from N = 12,570 students from 100 universities in 35 countries, collected in 21 languages. We measured anxieties (statistics, mathematics, test, trait, social interaction, performance, creativity, intolerance of uncertainty, and fear of negative evaluation), self-efficacy, persistence, and the cognitive reflection test, and collected demographics, previous mathematics grades, self-reported and official statistics grades, and statistics module details. Data reuse potential is broad, including testing links between anxieties and statistics/mathematics education factors, and examining instruments’ psychometric properties across different languages and contexts.

Pre-registration for secondary data analysis project as part of Trust in Science and Science Related Populism study. People’s attitudes towards science and applications of science are shaped by many factors including ideologies and the perceived motivations and morality of scientists (Rutjens et al., 2018). For examples, attitudes towards Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) for food are associated with trust in scientists and regulators (e.g., Marques et al., 2015), belief in conspiracy theories (Marques et al., 2021), and modern health worries (Devcich et al., 2007). The rejection of this technology could in part be due to a “refusal to concede any special truth value to claims of knowledge generated by methods of inquiry used by scientists” (Marques et al., 2021, p. 2). As such, attitudes to GMOs should be associated with a specific form of science-related populism, which suggests a morally charged antagonism between virtuous ordinary people and elites such as scientists who ignore people’s common sense and will (Mede & Schäfer, 2020). However, it makes little sense to understand an individual’s attitude towards a technology (e.g., GMOs) as distinct from the application of that technology, given that the utility of the technology is likely to shape an individual’s attitude towards it depending on the level of controversy or moral threat that it poses (see Marques et al., 2015, for a discussion).

Classic dual process theories of human reasoning attribute explicit reasoning to effortful, deliberative thinking. According to these models, intuitive processes lack any access to the formal rules of logic and probability and hence rely exclusively on superficial problem features to determine a response. However, in recent years, researchers have demonstrated that reasoners are able to solve simple logical or probabilistic problems relatively automatically, a capability which has been called “logical intuition.” In four experiments, we instructed participants to judge the validity (Experiments 1 and 4), likeability (Experiments 1, 2, and 3), and physical brightness (Experiments 2, 3, and 4) of the conclusion to several reasoning problems. Brightness judgements were made by evaluating the font shade brightness of the argument’s conclusion. Participants were also asked to complete a range of individual differences measures, drawing on cognitive ability and cognitive style, to evaluate the extent to which “logical intuitions” were linked to measures of deliberative reasoning. The results showed that participants judged the conclusion of logically valid statements to be more valid, more likable, and more physically bright than invalid statements. Participants with higher cognitive ability and unlimited processing time showed greater effects of logical validity in their liking judgements (varied across experiments). However, these effects were absent in the brightness tasks, suggesting that logic effects observed under instructions to judge conclusion brightness are a purer measure of “logical intuition.” We discuss the implications of our findings for recent dual process theories of human reasoning.

Is there a relationship between argument complexity and persuasion? Are simple arguments more successful in persuasion than complex ones? On simple arguments, logic-based judgments may be more accessible than belief-based judgments because the underlying logical structure of the argument is clear. If this is the case, it seems that reasoners can be more easily convinced by simple arguments than complex arguments. However, it is reasonable to assume that complex arguments may signal reasoners' expertise, argument profoundness, or a need to engage in more analytical thinking and thus may be more successful in persuasion.

Recent research suggest that reasoners are able to draw simple logical or probabilistic inferences relatively intuitively and automatically, a capacity which has been termed “logical intuition” (see, for example, De Neys & Pennycook, 2019). A key finding in support of this interpretation is that conclusion validity consistently interferes with judgments of conclusion believability, suggesting that information about logical validity is available quickly enough to interfere with belief judgments. In this paper we examined whether logical intuitions arise because reasoners are sensitive to the logical features of problem or another structural feature that just happens to aligns with logical validity. In three experiments (N = 113, 137, and 122), we presented participants with logical (determinate) and pseudo-logical (indeterminate) arguments and asked them to judge the validity or believability of the conclusion. Logical arguments had determinately valid or invalid conclusions, whereas pseudo-logical arguments were all logically indeterminate, but some were pseudo-valid (possible ‘strong’ arguments) and others pseudo-invalid (possible ‘weak’ arguments). Experiments 1 and 2 used simple Modus Ponens and Affirming the Consequent structures; Experiment 3 used more complex Denying the Antecedent and Modus Tollens structures. In all three experiments, we found that pseudo-validity interfered with belief judgments to the same extent as real validity. Altogether, these findings suggest that whilst people are able to draw inferences intuitively, and these inferences impact on belief judgments, they are not ‘logical intuitions.’ Rather, the intuitive inferences are driven by the processing of more superficial structural features that happen to align with logical validity.

Previous research has shown that normative rules such as logic or probability can interfere with belief judgments. For example, using an instructional manipulation paradigm, Pennycook et al. (2013) showed that on problems with a conflict between base-rate information and stereotype, participants were less accurate, less confident, and slower in their belief judgments, compared to problems with no conflict. To the best of our knowledge, all studies with instructional manipulations have used reasoning problems with neutral contents. In the current project, however, we are interested to see if normative rules can interfere with more entrenched beliefs such as climate-related beliefs. To investigate this question, we will recruit participants who believe in climate change (i.e., believers) and those who deny climate change altogether (i.e., trend deniers). Participants will be presented with political and neutral base-rate arguments and will be asked to evaluate them either based on statistics rules or their personal beliefs. We switch base-rate numbers to create conflict and non-conflict items for each belief group.

In order to test these hypotheses, we will present participants with several reasoning arguments regarding an imaginary scenario (two alien species on a distant planet). However, to control for the surface features of those arguments, we run a pilot experiment to choose suitable materials for the main study. In the pilot experiment, participants will be presented with several pairs of statements about the characteristics of predators and prey (e.g., If a species has sharper teeth than another species, then it is a predator/ If a species is prey, then it has flatter teeth than predators) and will be asked to rate each statement in terms of its plausibility. These statements, which will be randomly presented, are basically the first premises of modus ponens and modus tollens conditionals.
