Abstract

Summary: Chlamydia and Chlamydia‐like bacteria are well known to infect several organisms and may cause a wide range of diseases, particularly in ruminants. To gain insight into the prevalence and diversity of these intracellular bacteria, we applied a pan‐Chlamydiales real‐time PCR to 1,134 veterinary samples taken from 130 Tunisian ruminant herds. The true adjusted animal population‐level prevalence was 12.9% in cattle, against 8.7% in sheep. In addition, the true adjusted herd‐level prevalence of Chlamydiae was 80% in cattle and 25.5% in sheep. Chlamydiales from three family‐level lineages were detected indicating a high biodiversity of Chlamydiales in ruminant herds. Our results showed that Parachlamydia acanthamoebae could be responsible for bovine and ovine chlamydiosis in central‐eastern Tunisia. Multivariable logistic regression analysis at the animal population level indicated that strata and digestive disorders variables were the important risk factors of bovine and ovine chlamydiosis. However, origin and age variables were found to be associated with bovine and ovine chlamydiosis, respectively. At the herd level, risk factors for Chlamydia positivity were as follows: abortion and herd size for cattle against breeding system, cleaning frequency, quarantine, use of disinfectant and floor type for sheep. 42. Primary hyperoxaluria type 1 in Tunisian children

Abstract

To determine the clinical, biological, and radiological futures of primary hyper-oxaluria type 1 in Tunisian children, we retrospectively studied 44 children with primary hyper-oxaluria type 1 who were treated in our center from 1995 to 2009. The diagnosis was established by quantitative urinary oxalate excretion. In patients with renal impairment, the diagnosis was made by infrared spectroscopy of stones or kidney biopsies. The male-to-female ratio was 1:2. The median age at diagnosis was 5.75 years. About 43% of the patients were diagnosed before the age of five years with initial symptoms dominated by uremia. Four patients were asymptomatic and diagnosed by sibling screenings of known patients. Nephrocalcinosis was present in all the patients; it was cortical in 34%, medullary in 32%, and global in 34%. At diagnosis, 12 (27%) children were in end-stage renal disease. Pyridoxine response, which is defined by a reduction in urine oxalate excretion of 60% or more, was obtained in 27% of the cases. In the majority of patients, the clinical expression of primary hyperoxaluria type 1 was characterized by nephrocal-cinosis, urolithiasis, and renal failure; pyridoxine sensitivity was associated with better outcome.

Abstract

Gastrointestinal malignancies are extremely rare in the paediatric population and duodenal cancers represent an even more unusual entity. It represents 0.3-1% of all gastrointestinal tumours. A case report of a 10-year-old boy with duodenal adenocarcinoma is reported and the difficulties of diagnosing and treating this rare tumour are discussed.

48. Bacillus methylotrophicus DCS1: Production of Different Lipopeptide Families, In Vitro Antifungal Activity and Suppression of Fusarium Wilt in Tomato Plants.

Abstract

The present work aims to quantitatively and qualitatively monitor the production of lipopeptide mixtures by Bacillus methylotrophicus DCS1 strain in Landy medium and to investigate the antifungal activities of DCS1 strain and its produced lipopeptides. The in vitro activities were tested by the direct confrontation and agar well diffusion methods, while the in vivo study was carried out in order to test the efficiency of DCS1 bacterial suspension in the control of Fusarium wilt in tomato plants. Identification of lipopeptides by mass spectrometry (LC/MSD-TOF) showed that lipopeptide isoforms produced during the first 24 h and 48 h of fermentation are identical, belonging to bacillomycin D and fengycins A and B homologues with a difference in the yield of production. After 72 h of fermentation corresponding to the end of incubation period, B. methylotrophicus DCS1 is able to produce a mixture of surfactin, pumilacidin, iturin A/mycosubtilin, iturin C1, bacillomycin D and fengycins A and B isoforms. The results of in vitro antifungal experiments suggest that B. methylotrophicus DCS1 has a significant potential as a biocontrol agent, owing to lipopeptides produced, endowed with antifungal activity against several phytopathogenic fungi. The curative treatment of tomato plants with DCS1 bacterial suspension was more effective in the protection against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici (FORL) than the preventive treatment by comparing the average number of leaves remaining healthy after 30 days of each treatment and the appearance of tomato plants roots. The results indicate that B. methylotrophicus DCS1 exhibit a significant suppression of Fusarium wilt symptoms in tomato plants comparable to that of commercial fungicides and could be an alternative to chemically synthesized pesticides., (© 2024. Abstract

Introduction: Peritoneal tuberculosis (PT) is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in children. The diagnosis is difficult because of its clinical polymorphism. Laparoscopy is the gold standard to make the diagnosis by exploring and performing peritoneal biopsies. Our aim was to show the place of laparoscopy in the diagnosis of PT, to compare the anatomopathological results of peritoneal biopsies with a macroscopic appearance to quick start antituberculosis treatment. Case Reports: We reported 4 patients with PT, 3 girls and 1 boy. The middle age was 9 years old. The revealing symptomatology was ascites in all cases. Radiological exploration was not contributing. Laparoscopy was performed for all patients. The exploration revealed an agglutination of the intestinal loops with the presence of whitish micronodules scattered over the entire abdominal cavity. Peritoneal biopsies were done in all cases. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of PT in all patients and antituberculosis treatment was introduced. There was a good clinical evolution with a follow-up of 30 months. Conclusion: PT is a public health problem due to its clinical and biological polymorphism. Laparoscopy with peritoneal biopsies remains the essential means for the diagnosis of this pathology in children.

Abstract

Hydatid disease or hydatidosis is a worldwide zoonosis disease caused by the tapeworm of Echinococcus granulosus and still widely endemic in Tunisia especially in rural areas where the sheep-dog cycle is dominant. It is an important public health problem in the pediatric age group causing significant morbidity and mortality.
