Most of the standard image and video codecs are block-based and depending upon the compression ratio the compressed images/videos suffer from different distortions. At low ratios, blurriness is observed and as compression increases blocking artifacts occur. Generally, in order to reduce blockiness, images are low-pass filtered which leads to more blurriness. Also, in bokeh mode images they are commonly seen: blurriness as a result of intentional blurred background while blocking artifact and global blurriness arising due to compression. Therefore, such visual media suffer from both blockiness and blurriness distortions. Along with this, noise is also commonly encountered distortion. Most of the existing works on quality assessment quantify these distortions individually. This paper proposes a methodology to blindly measure overall quality of an image suffering from these distortions, individually as well as jointly. This is achieved by considering the sum of absolute values of low and high-frequency Discrete Frequency Transform (DFT) coefficients defined as sum magnitudes. The number of blocks lying in specific ranges of sum magnitudes including zero-valued AC coefficients and mean of 100 maximum and 100 minimum values of these sum magnitudes are used as feature vectors. These features are then fed to the Machine Learning (ML) based Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) model, which quantifies the image quality. The simulation results show that the proposed method can estimate the quality of images distorted with the blockiness, blurriness, noise and their combinations. It is relatively fast compared to many state-of-art methods, and therefore is suitable for real-time quality monitoring applications.

Optical scanning is a prevalent technique for optical neural interfaces where light delivery with high spatial and temporal precision is desired. However, due to the sequential nature of point-scanning techniques, the settling time of optical modulators is a major bottleneck for throughput and limits random-access targeting capabilities. While fast lateral scanners exist, commercially available varifocal elements are constrained to >3ms settling times, limiting the speed of the overall system to hundreds of Hz. Faster focusing methods exist but cannot combine fast operation and dwelling capability with electrical and optical efficiency. Here, we present a varifocal mirror comprised of an array of piston-motion MEMS micromirrors and a custom driver ASIC, offering fast operation with dwelling capability while maintaining high diffraction efficiency. The ASIC features a reconfigurable nonlinear DAC to simultaneously compensate for the built-in nonlinearity of electrostatic actuators and the global process variations in MEMS mirrors. Experimental results demonstrate a wide continuous sweeping range that spans 22 distinctly resolvable depth planes with refresh rates greater than 12 kHz., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication

Graph theory has been extensively used to investigate brain network topology and its changes in disease cohorts. However, many graph theoretic analysis-based brain network studies focused on the shortest paths or, more generally, cost-efficiency. In this work, we use two new concepts, connectedness and 2-connectedness, to measure different global properties compared to the previously widely adopted ones., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

A proper vertex coloring of a graph $G$ is called a star coloring if every two color classes induce a forest whose each component is a star, which means there is no bicolored $P_4$ in $G$. In this paper, we show that the Cartesian product of any two cycles, except $C_3 \square C_3$ and $C_3 \square C_5$, has a $5$-star coloring., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Quantitative Biology - Neurons and Cognition - Abstract
Neural stimulation is a powerful technique for modulating physiological functions and for writing information into the nervous system as part of brain-machine interfaces. Current clinically approved neural stimulators require batteries and are many cubic centimetres in size -- typically much larger than their intended targets. We present a complete wireless neural stimulation system consisting of a 1.7 mm3 wireless, batteryless, leadless implantable stimulator (the "mote"), an ultrasonic wireless link for power and bi-directional communication, and a hand-held external transceiver. The mote consists of a piezoceramic transducer, an energy storage capacitor, and a stimulator integrated circuit (IC). The IC harvests ultrasonic power with high efficiency, decodes stimulation parameter downlink data, and generates current-controlled stimulation pulses. Stimulation parameters are time-encoded on the fly through the wireless link rather than being programmed and stored on the mote, reducing power consumption and on-chip memory requirements and enabling complex stimulation protocols with high-temporal resolution and low-latency feedback for use in closed-loop stimulation. Uplink data indicates whether the mote is currently stimulating; it is encoded by the mote via backscatter modulation and is demodulated at the external transceiver. We show that the mote operates at an acoustic intensity that is 7.8% of the FDA limit for diagnostic ultrasound and characterize the acoustic wireless link's robustness to expected real-world misalignment. We demonstrate the in vivo performance of the system with motes acutely implanted with a cuff on the sciatic nerve of anesthetized rats and show highly repeatable stimulation across a wide range of physiological responses.

We present a 6.5mm3, 10mg, wireless peripheral nerve stimulator. The stimulator is powered and controlled through ultrasound from an external transducer and utilizes a single 750×750×750μm3 piezocrystal for downlink communication, powering, and readout, reducing implant volume and mass. An IC with 0.06mm2 active circuit area, designed in TSMC 65nm LPCMOS process, converts harvested ultrasound to stimulation charge with a peak efficiency of 82%. A custom wireless protocol that does not require a clock or memory circuits reduces on-chip power to 4μW when not stimulating. The encapsulated stimulator was cuffed to the sciatic nerve of an anesthetized rodent and demonstrated full-scale nerve activation in vivo. We achieve a highly efficient and temporally precise wireless peripheral nerve stimulator that is the smallest and lightest to our knowledge.

- Abstract
Background: 1H-NMR metabolomics and DNA methylation in blood are widely known biomarkers predicting age-related physiological decline and mortality yet exert mutually independent mortality and frailty signals. Methods: Leveraging multi-omics data in four Dutch population studies (N = 5238, ∼40% of which male) we investigated whether the mortality signal captured by 1H-NMR metabolomics could guide the construction of DNA methylation-based mortality predictors. Findings: We trained DNA methylation-based surrogates for 64 metabolomic analytes and found that analytes marking inflammation, fluid balance, or HDL/VLDL metabolism could be accurately reconstructed using DNA-methylation assays. Interestingly, a previously reported multi-analyte score indicating mortality risk (MetaboHealth) could also be accurately reconstructed. Sixteen of our derived surrogates, including the MetaboHealth surrogate, showed significant associations with mortality, independent of relevant covariates. Interpretation: The addition of our metabolic analyte-derived surrogates to the well-established epigenetic clock GrimAge demonstrates that our surrogates potentially represent valuable mortality signal. Mathematics - Combinatorics - Abstract
Let $G$ be a graph and $f:V(G)\rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ be a function. An $f$-coloring of a graph $G$ is an edge coloring such that each color appears at each vertex $v\in V(G)$ at most $f (v)$ times. The minimum number of colors needed to $f$-color $G$ is called the $f$-chromatic index of $G$ and is denoted by $\chi'_{f}(G)$. It was shown that for every graph $G$, $\Delta_{f}(G)\le \chi'_{f}(G)\le \Delta_{f}(G)+1$, where $\Delta_{f}(G)=\max_{v\in V(G)} \lceil \frac{d_G(v)}{f(v)} \rceil$. A graph $G$ is said to be $f$-Class $1$ if $\chi'_{f}(G)=\Delta_{f}(G)$, and $f$-Class $2$, otherwise. Also, $G_{\Delta_f}$ is the induced subgraph of $G$ on $\{v\in V(G):\,\frac{d_G(v)}{f(v)}=\Delta_{f}(G)\}$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is a connected graph with $\Delta(G_{\Delta_f})\leq 2$ and $G$ has an edge cut of size at most $\Delta_f(G) -2$ which is a matching or a star, then $G$ is $f$-Class $1$. Also, we prove that if $G$ is a connected graph and every connected component of $G_{\Delta_f}$ is a unicyclic graph or a tree and $G_{\Delta_f}$ is not $2$-regular, then $G$ is $f$-Class $1$. Moreover, we show that except one graph, every connected claw-free graph $G$ whose $f$-core is $2$-regular with a vertex $v$ such that $f(v)\neq 1$ is $f$-Class $1$., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

CNTs are effectively taken up by many different cell types through several mechanisms. CNTs have acted as carriers of anticancer molecules (including docetaxel (DTX), doxorubicin (DOX), methotrexate (MTX), paclitaxel (PTX), and gemcitabine (GEM)), anti-inflammatory drugs, osteogenic dexamethasone (DEX) steroids, etc. In addition, the unique optical properties of CNTs have led to their use in a number of platforms for improved photo-therapy. Further, the easy surface functionalization of CNTs has prompted their use to deliver different genes, such as plasmid DNA (PDNA), micro-RNA (miRNA), and small interfering RNA (siRNA) as gene delivery vectors for various diseases such as cancers. However, despite all of these promises, the most important continuous concerns raised by scientists reside in CNT nanotoxicology and the environmental effects of CNTs, mostly because of their non-biodegradable state. Despite a lack of widespread FDA approval, CNTs have been studied for decades and plenty of in vivo and in vitro reports have been published, which are reviewed here. Lastly, this review covers the future research necessary for the field of CNT medicine to grow even further. Keywords: drug delivery, gene delivery, carbon nanotube, precision medicine

25 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablas, Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele., This work was funded by a grant (EADB) from the EU Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research. INSERM UMR1167 is also funded by the INSERM, Institut Pasteur de Lille, Lille Métropole Communauté Urbaine and French government’s LABEX DISTALZ program (development of innovative strategies for a transdisciplinary approach to AD). Statement of Problem: Dentin hypersensitivity is one of the most common complaints of patients after periodontal treatments which occur after tissue shrinkage. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine and compare the effectiveness of sensikin gel (10% potassium nitrate and 0.22% sodium fluoride) with sodium fluoride gel (2.7%) and fluoride varnish (5%) in reducing the dentin hypersensitivity after periodontal surgery. Materials and Methods: Twenty-two patients who, after full mouth periodontal surgery, had a complaint of dentin hypersensitivity (DH) in at least three quadrants were selected. Then a specific treatment was randomly selected for each quadrant which was applied once a day for one week and then stopped. A visual analog scale (VAS) was used to assess the subjects’ responses to air blast and periodontal probe stimuli at baseline at one week, and one, three and 6 months after treatment. To analyze the data, repeated measures ANOVA test, Tukey test and variance analysis test were used. Results: At all given intervals, almost both sodium fluoride and sensikin gel significantly reduced the dental sensitivity caused by stimulants. There were no significant differences between sensikin gel and other two desensitizers in reducing the dentin hypersensitivity after 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months with respect to air blast stimuli. Sensikin gel was more efficient than Fluoride varnish in reducing the sensitivity caused by periodontal probe after 1 month. Conclusions: Sensikin gel, sodium fluoride gel and fluoride varnish can all be prescribed to reduce dental sensitivity in patients who have undergone periodontal treatments. In the case of severe sensitivity to mechanical stimulations, a treatment with a long-run effectiveness such as sensikin and/or sodium fluoride gel is preferred.

This study aimed to determine the influences of a health-promoting lifestyle of rural women during the COVID-19 pandemic on the intention to use herbal medicine and to investigate the moderating effects of Corona anxiety on the model. The present research is a cross-section survey conducted using a questionnaire with confirmed validity and reliability. Rural women of Zanjan Province comprised the study population. Multi-stage sampling was performed, and the sample size was calculated as 272 using Cochran's formula. Data were collected between March and May 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. The results revealed that the lifestyle of rural women was moderately healthoriented. The results of the hypothesized structural model showed that dimensions of a health-promoting lifestyle explained 68% of the variability in intention to use herbal medicine. The drivers of intention to use herbal medicine for rural women in order of influence were health responsibility, nutrition, self-actualization, and stress management. The findings on the moderating role of Corona anxiety on the conceptual model of the study revealed that Corona anxiety significantly moderates the path relations of health responsibility and interpersonal relationships with intention to use herbal medicine. This study is significant in determining how Covid-19 infection can increase attention to certain aspects of a healthy lifestyle and intention to use herbal medicines. Furthermore, by looking at the underlying variables correlated to the intention to use herbal medicines, the results of this study could be beneficial in explaining appropriate educational interventions for rural women.
