In this study, we investigate the spin-charge current conversion characteristics of chemically disordered ferromagnetic single FePt thin films by spin-pumping ferromagnetic resonance experiments performed on both a resonance cavity and on patterned devices. We clearly observe a self-induced signal in a single FePt layer. The sign of a single FePt spin pumping voltage signal is consistent with a typical bilayer with a positive spin Hall angle layer such as that of Pt on top of a ferromagnet (FM), substrate//FM/Pt. Structural analysis shows a strong composition gradient due to natural oxidation at both FePt interfaces, with the Si substrate and with the air. The FePt-thickness dependence of the self-induced charge current produced allowed us to obtain $\lambda _ \text{FePt}=(1.5\pm 0.1)$ nm and self-induced $\theta_ \text{self-FePt}=0.047 \pm 0.003$, with efficiency for reciprocal effects applications $\theta _ \text{self-FePt} \times \lambda _ \text{FePt} = 0.071$ nm which is comparable to that of Pt, $\theta _ \text{SH-Pt} \times \lambda _ \text{Pt} = 0.2$ nm. Moreover, by studying bilayer systems such as Si//FePt/Pt and Si//Pt//FePt we independently could extract the individual contributions of the external inverse spin Hall effect of Pt and the self-induced inverse spin Hall effect of FePt. Notably, this method gives consistent values of charge currents produced due to only self-induced inverse spin Hall effect in FePt layers. These results advance our understanding of spin-to-charge interconversion mechanisms in composite thin films and pave the way for the development of next-generation spintronics devices based on self-torque., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Physisorption studies and transmission electron microscopy have been used to characterise multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) made by a template-synthesis technique. Microscopic investigations revealed formation of 'branched nanotubes' with significant irregularities in diameters and with structural defects on the external surfaces of the tubes. Krypton adsorption isotherms at 77 K were recorded; comparison of these isotherms with those obtained under the same conditions on well defined MWNTs made by the catalytic chemical vapour deposition (CCVD) technique is discussed in the light of the sample morphologies. The effect of annealing on the crystallinity of the surface is reported.

The epitaxy of MoO2 on c_plane sapphire substrates is examined. A theoretical approach, based on density functional theory calculations of the strain energy, allowed to predict the preferred layer/substrate epitaxial relationships. To test the results of these calculations, MoO2/(001) Al2O3 heterostructures were grown using the chemically_driven isothermal close space vapour transport technique. At the early stages of the growth, two kinds of morphologies were obtained, using the same growth parameters: lying and standing flakes. The composition and morphology, as well as the layer/substrate epitaxial relationships were determined for both kind of morphologies. Experimental epitaxial relationships coincide with those predicted by DFT calculation as the most favourable ones in terms of strain energy. For thicker films, the standing flakes evolve to form an epitaxial porous layer composed by coalesced epitaxial flakes. The interfacial strain between the sapphire substrate and MoO2 enables a self_organization from nanometer to micron scales between separated or coalesced flakes, depending on deposition condition.

Pulsed laser deposition from a Nd:YAG laser was employed in production of hundreds of nanometer thick quasicrystalline Ti-Zr-Ni films on glass substrate. The influence of deposition temperature Ts on the structure, morphology and microstructure of the films across their thickness was investigated. The morphology and microstructure features were evaluated by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques. The low deposition temperatures were found to produce films with nanometer sized grains embedded in an amorphous matrix. The grains exhibit quasicrystalline order. The higher deposition temperatures lead to films whose structure is not uniform all along the growth direction. The layer in contact with the substrate is a very thin amorphous layer. The main part of the film consists of crystallized columns. The columns have grown from a nano-crystallized layer where the size of crystallites increases with increasing thickness.

Engineering of magnetic materials for developing better spintronic applications relies on the control of two key parameters: the spin polarization and the Gilbert damping responsible for the spin angular momentum dissipation. Both of them are expected to affect the ultrafast magnetization dynamics occurring on the femtosecond time scale. Here, we use engineered Co2MnAlxSi1-x Heusler compounds to adjust the degree of spin polarization P from 60 to 100% and investigate how it correlates with the damping. We demonstrate experimentally that the damping decreases when increasing the spin polarization from 1.1 10-3 for Co2MnAl with 63% spin polarization to an ultra-low value of 4.10-4 for the half-metal magnet Co2MnSi. This allows us investigating the relation between these two parameters and the ultrafast demagnetization time characterizing the loss of magnetization occurring after femtosecond laser pulse excitation. The demagnetization time is observed to be inversely proportional to 1-P and as a consequence to the magnetic damping, which can be attributed to the similarity of the spin angular momentum dissipation processes responsible for these two effects. Altogether, our high quality Heusler compounds allow controlling the band structure and therefore the channel for spin angular momentum dissipation.

The microstructural evolution of a dissimilar metal weld (DMW) obtained by narrow-gap gas tungsten arc welding (NG-GTAW) was investigated after it was subjected to a post-weld heat treatment (PWHT). The case studied here is a joint between low-alloy steel pipes and a stainless steel steam generator using a nickel based alloy as filler material. The fusion boundary that was the focus of this work was that between the low-alloy steel (2.25Cr-1Mo) and the nickel alloy (alloy 82). The difference in matrix phase and chemical composition between the two alloys leads to a large difference in chemical potential for carbon, which is mobile at the PWHT temperature. A number of advanced characterization techniques were used to assess the gradient of composition, hardness and microstructures across the fusion line, both as welded and after PWHT. This complete analysis permits to highlight and understand the main microstructural changes occurring during the PWHT.

The prediction of ultra-low magnetic damping in Co 2 MnZ Heusler half-metal thin-film magnets is explored in this study and the damping response is shown to be linked to the underlying electronic properties. By substituting the Z elements in high crystalline quality films (Co 2 MnZ with Z=Si, Ge, Sn, Al, Ga, Sb), electronic properties such as the minority spin band gap, Fermi energy position in the gap and spin polarization can be tuned and the consequence on magnetization dynamics analyzed. The experimental results allow us to directly explore the interplay of spin polarization, spin gap, Fermi energy position and the magnetic damping obtained in these films, together with ab initio calculation predictions. The ultra-low magnetic damping coefficients measured in the range 4.1 10-4-9 10-4 for Co 2 MnSi, Ge, Sn, Sb are the lowest values obtained on a conductive layer and offers a clear experimental demonstration of theoretical predictions on Half-Metal Magnetic Heusler compounds and a pathway for future materials design.
