The present study interprets the high resolution of the biostratigraphy across the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary from Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan Region, and north-east Iraq, based on planktic foraminifera. The Dartw section was selected for this study, within the High Folded Zone. The biozone contact consists of lithostratigraphic resemblance and is represented by the upper part of the Tanjero Formation (late Maastrichtian) with the overlying Kolosh Formation (Danian). Four late Maastrichtian planktic foraminiferal biozones have been recorded from the Tanjero Formation: Racemiguembelina fructicosa Interval Zone (CF4), Pseudoguembelina hariaensis Concurrent Range Zone (CF3), Pseudoguembelina palpebra Partial Range Zone (CF2), and Plummerita hantkeninoides Total Range Zone (CF1), while three Danian planktic foraminiferal biozones and two subzones have been recorded from the Kolosh Formation: (Guembelitria cretacea (P0) Interval Zone, Parvularugoglobigerina eugubina (Pα) Total Range Zone, and Parasubbotina pseudobulloides (P1) Partial-Range Zone (Globoanomalina archaeocompressa (P1a) Partial Range Subzone, and Subbotina triloculinoides (P1b) Interval Subzone). High biostratigraphic resolution indicates a complete K/Pg transition with no hiatus at the studied section in the Sulaymaniyah area. The ranges of the species recognized in this study are given. Correlations with other sections in Iraq and other parts of the world, including the type Maastrichtian and Danian areas, are discussed and represented in correlation charts, together with the ranges of the important Upper Maastrichtian and Paleocene species. In the current study, biostratigraphy and paleoecology of the Anah Formation have been investigated. The study area is located in the Sulaimanyah Governorate, Kurdistan Region, Northeast Iraq where the Darzila section has been sampled. Twenty-five species of larger foraminifera and skeletal fragments of coral, echinoid spine, pelecypods, and gastropods are described in seven samples collected from the Darzila section. Based on the distribution of the larger-benthic foraminifera and other skeletal grains, two assemblage biozones of the Late Oligocene – Early Miocene age have been recognized. According to the paleoecological parameters, such as temperature, nutrients, depth, and salinity in the study area, the Anah Formation has deposited the euphotic zone, abundant imperforate foraminifera are present, sub-tropical waters under oligotrophic to mesotrophic middle ramp environment with normal to a higher salinity inner ramp setting and at water depths that ranged from 40 m to 80 m, and a temperature about 18 – 25 ºC. In order to trace the environmental response of the PETM record in northern Iraq, three outcropping sections are selected at Sinjar, Dohuk, and Shaqlawa areas which included the Aaliji and Kolosh Formations. Lithologically, the fresh lithological color change was a distinctive field feature of PETM lithosomes. Biostratigraphically, the Paleocene/Eocene boundary is assigned by foraminfera in the prepared study at the same locations. Sedimentologically, PETM evidences are extrapolated through petrography (high micritic matrix ratio, magnetosomes, appearance of green algae (Dasycladacean) and early dolomitization). Facies analysis results are supported by the minor sea level rise (third or fourth order cycle) at the earliest Eocene as a one of the PETM indications. Clay mineral assemblage variations of formations referred obviously to warm, aridseasonal climate conditions, which are consistent with the climatic trend of the southeastern Tethys region. Geochemically and by using various methods, evidences of stable isotopes values in both formations give important hints for PETM. X-ray fluorescence analyses as geochemical indices fixed and confirmed the PETM environmental conditions, particularly anoxic or euxinic state and the rate of siliciclastic influx or the terrestrial input. Total organic carbon (TOC) and calcium carbonate weight percent variations present other signs regarding productivity nature, organic carbon preservation, and lysocline response during the PETM. Multi-geoindicators and the integrated relationship among them suggested that the northern Iraq region was affected by the PETM climatic environmental perturbation in the marine realm within an epicontinental foreland basin.
