(abridged) The massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, SagittariusA* is, in relative terms, the weakest accreting black hole accessible to observations. At the moment, the mean SED of SgrA* is only known reliably in the radio to mm regimes. The goal of this paper is to provide constraints on the mean emission from SgrA* in the near-to-mid infrared. Excellent imaging quality was reached in the MIR by using speckle imaging combined with holographic image reconstruction, a novel technique for this kind of data. No counterpart of SgrA* is detected at 8.6 microns. At this wavelength, SgrA* is located atop a dust ridge, which considerably complicates the search for a potential point source. An observed 3 sigma upper limit of ~10 mJy is estimated for the emission of SgrA* at 8.6 microns, a tighter limit at this wavelength than in previous work. The de-reddened 3 sigma upper limit, including the uncertainty of the extinction correction, is ~84 mJy . Based on the available data, it is argued that, with currently available instruments, SgrA* cannot be detected in the MIR, not even during flares. At 4.8 and 3.8 microns, on the other hand, SgrA* is detected at all times, at least when considering timescales of a few up to 13 min. We derive well-defined time-averaged, de-reddened flux densities of 3.8+-1.3 mJy at 4.8 microns and 5.0+-0.6 mJy at 3.8 microns. Observations with NIRC2/Keck and NaCo/VLT from the literature provide good evidence that SgrA* also has a fairly well-defined de-reddened mean flux of 0.5-2.5 mJy at wavelengths of 2.1-2.2 microns. We present well-constrained anchor points for the SED of SgrA* on the high-frequency side of the Terahertz peak. The new data are in general agreement with published theoretical SEDs of the mean emission from SgrA*, but we expect them to have an appreciable impact on the model parameters in future theoretical work., Comment: accepted for publication by Astronomy & Astrophysics on 20 June 2011

We have studied the correlation between 2357 Chandra X-ray point sources in a 40 x 40 parsec field and ~20,000 infrared sources we observed in the corresponding subset of our 2 x 1.4 degree Spitzer/IRAC Galactic Center Survey at 3.6-8.0 um, using various spatial and X-ray hardness thresholds. The correlation was determined for source separations of less than 0.5", 1" or 2". Only the soft X-ray sources show any correlation with infrared point sources on these scales, and that correlation is very weak. The upper limit on hard X-ray sources that have infrared counterparts is <1.7% (3 sigma). However, because of the confusion limit of the IR catalog, we only detect IR sources with absolute magnitudes < ~1. As a result, a stronger correlation with fainter sources cannot be ruled out. Only one compact infrared source, IRS 13, coincides with any of the dozen prominent X-ray emission features in the 3 x 3 parsec region centered on Sgr A*, and the diffuse X-ray and infrared emission around Sgr A* seems to be anti-correlated on a few-arcsecond scale. A mid-infrared (3.6-8 um) survey of the Galactic Center has been carried out with the IRAC instrument on the Spitzer Space Telescope. This survey covers the central 2x1.4 degree (~280x200 pc) of the Galaxy. At 3.6 and 4.5 um the emission is dominated by stellar sources, the fainter ones merging into an unresolved background. At 5.8 and 8 um the stellar sources are fainter, and large-scale diffuse emission from the ISM of the Galaxy's central molecular zone becomes prominent. The survey reveals that the 8 to 5.8 um color of the ISM emission is highly uniform across the surveyed region. This uniform color is consistent with a flat extinction law and emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Models indicate that this broadband color should not be expected to change if the incident radiation field heating the dust and PAHs is <10^4 times that of the solar neighborhood. The few regions with unusually red emission are areas where the PAHs are underabundant and the radiation field is locally strong enough to heat large dust grains to produce significant 8 um emission. These red regions include compact H II regions, Sgr B1, and wider regions around the Arches and Quintuplet Clusters. In these regions the radiation field is >10^4 times that of the solar neighborhood. Other regions of very red emission indicate cases where thick dust clouds obscure deeply embedded objects or very early stages of star formation., Comment: 37 pages, 15 Postscript figures (low resolution). We present Keck LWS images of the Orion BN/KL star forming region obtained in the first multi-wavelength study to have 0.3-0.5" resolution from 4.7 to 22 microns. The young stellar objects designated infrared source-n and radio source-I are believed to dominate the BN/KL region. We have detected extended emission from a probable accretion disk around source-n but infer a stellar luminosity on the order of only 2000 Lsun. Although source-I is believed to be more luminous, we do not detect an infrared counterpart even at the longest wavelengths. However, we resolve the closeby infrared source, IRc2, into an arc of knots ~1000 AU long at all wavelengths. Although the physical relation of source-I to IRc2 remains ambiguous, we suggest these sources mark a high density core (10^7-10^8 pc^-3 over 1000 AU) within the larger BN/KL star forming cluster. The high density may be a consequence of the core being young and heavily embedded. We suggest the energetics of the BN/KL region may be dominated by this cluster core rather than one or two individual sources., Comment: 13 pages including 3 color figures. We compare the results of a small region from our 3.6 - 8.0 micron Spitzer/IRAC imaging survey of 2 x 1.5 deg around the Galactic Center with x-ray and radio emission due to high energy processes. The region we studied covers 100 x 100 parsecs, and was chosen to include a rich collection of sources, including Sgr A* and the bright Sgr AWest infrared/radio source complex, the non-thermal radio filaments and the thermal: radio arches. In a 40 x 40 parsec subset of that region we also make a preliminary analysis of the correlation between approx.2300 x-ray sources identified by Muno et al. (2003) and 20,000 infrared sources from our survey. We also investigate the correlation between infrared and radio emission in the large-scale structures including the thermal radio arches and non-thermal radio filaments. We set constrictions on the synchrotron spectrum observed at radio and millimeter wavelengths extrapolated to 8 micons, and set limits on the midinfrared variability of Sgr A* during and after the coordinated multi-wavelength observing campaign in September 2004.

The Fourier-Kelvin Stellar Interferometer (FKSI) is a mission concept for an imaging and nulling interferometer for the near-infrared to mid-infrared spectral region (3-8 microns). FKSI is conceived as a scientific and technological pathfinder to TPF/DARWIN as well as SPIRIT, SPECS, and SAFIR. It will also be a high angular resolution system complementary to JWST. The scientific emphasis of the mission is on the evolution of protostellar systems, from just after the collapse of the precursor molecular cloud core, through the formation of the disk surrounding the protostar, the formation of planets in the disk, and eventual dispersal of the disk material. FKSI will also search for brown dwarfs and Jupiter mass and smaller planets, and could also play a very powerful role in the investigation of the structure of active galactic nuclei and extra-galactic star formation. We report additional studies of the imaging capabilities of the FKSI with various configurations of two to five telescopes, studies of the capabilities of FKSI assuming an increase in long wavelength response to 10 or 12 microns (depending on availability of detectors), and preliminary results from our nulling testbed.

The BN/KL region in Orion is the archetypal region of high-mass star formation, radiating approx. 10(sup)5 Lsun and displaying promininent bulk outflows. In particular, there is no certain identification of the sources responsible for the high luminosity and outflows, and is the origin of a major explosive event (Shultz et al. 1999, ApJ, 511, 282). Using 18.7 and 12.5 micron data from observations in December 1999 and October 2000 made at the Keck I telescope, we discovered that the BN Object has a companion previously seen only at radio wavelengths (Menten & Reid 1995, ApJ, 445, L157). We call this companion B2 and it is about 1.5 arcsec West of the bright component. We also see changes in the shape of BN and the emission of "blobs" or "bullets" of material. While B2 remains unchanged and in the same place between the two epochs, there is an additional structure in BN to the South-South-East and the North-East, as well as a finger of material pointing North from B2 itself. Such a change has not been seen before in the infrared. We have looked very carefully at these images, calibrator images taken within a few minutes of the source images, as well as our previous images and cannot find any technical faults with the data. We explore the implications of these results, in particular, can these features be connected with previously observed "bullets" or "fingers" (see Allen & Burton 1993, for example), making BN a source for the bullets, implying they are not from IRc2 as previously thought? Or could they be produced by an interaction between material from BN and other sources such as IRc2?

We have obtained array camera images of the Orion BN/KL infrared complex at nine wavelengths between 4.8 and 20 mue.

The Goddard Infrared Array Camera was used to obtain a high resolution image of the nucleus of NGC 1068 at 12.4 microns. In addition, the peak emission at 12.4 microns relative to the peak of the optical continuum was determined. The distribution of the 12.4 micron emission relates to both the forbidden O III 5007A 'ionization cone' and the optical continuum emission imaged by HST. This distribution is also found to have an alignment perpendicular to the plane of a putative molecular torus. It is suggested that the extended mid-infrared emission is thermal radiation from dust in circumnuclear clouds heated by the collimated optical/UV AGN source. A portion of the unresolved 12.4 micron emission possibly originates from the torus. The infrared emission peak is found to coincide with the apex of the ionization cone, which is presumed to be the location of the torus.

We present 12.4 micron images, made with 1" resolution, of the intense star-forming region in the galaxy M82. Considerable small-scale structure is evident, including several bright clumps less than about 20 pc in size which may be embedded with giant star clusters more massive than 3 x 100,000 solar mass. No correlation is seen between the infrared emission and the bright radio/X-ray point sources which are thought to be very young supernova remnants. We propose that high values of the ratio of nonthermal and infrared emission near the nucleus, and of the ratio LIR/LCO at one of the starburst lobes, can be attributed to disruption of the central region by supernova activity. However, we argue that the midinfrared-emitting dust is heated by young stars and not, as recently proposed, by supernova shocks.

We have developed a powerful, versatile image processing and analysis software package called MOSAIC, designed specifically for the manipulation of digital astronomical image data obtained with (but not limited to) two-dimensional array detectors. The software package is implemented using the Interactive Data Language (IDL), and incorporates new methods for processing, calibration, analysis, and visualization of astronomical image data, stressing effective methods for the creation of mosaic images from collections of individual exposures, while at the same time preserving the photometric integrity of the original data. Since IDL is available on many computers, the MOSAIC software runs on most UNIX and VAX workstations with the X-Windows or Sun View graphics interface.

Observations of the stratospheric IR emission structure on Saturn are presented. The high-spatial-resolution global images show a variety of new features, including a narrow equatorial belt of enhanced emission at 7.8 micron, a prominent symmetrical north polar hotspot at all three wavelengths, and a midlatitude structure which is asymmetrically brightened at the east limb. The results confirm the polar brightening and reversal in position predicted by recent models for seasonal thermal variations of Saturn's stratosphere.

Mid-IR images of AFGL 2688, the Egg nebula, obtained with a 16 x 16 pixel array camera (field of view 12.5 x 12.5 arcsec) resolve the central source. It appears as a centrally peaked ellipsoid with major axis of symmetry parallel to the axis of the visible nebulosity. This is contrary to the expected extension perpendicular to this axis implied by proposed dust-toroid models of the IR source. Maps of the spatial distribution of 8-13 micron color temperature and warm dust opacity derived from the multiwavelength images further characterize the IR emission. The remarkable flatness of the color temperature conflicts with the radial temperature gradient expected across a thick shell of material with a single heat source at its center. The new data suggest instead that the source consists of a central star surrounded by a dust shell that is too thin to provide a detectable temperature gradient and too small to permit the resolution of limb brightening.

A new infrared array camera system has been successfully applied to high background 5 - 14 micron astronomical imaging photometry observations, using a hybrid 58 x 62 pixel Si:Ga array detector. The off-axis reflective optical design incorporating a parabolic camera mirror, circular variable filter wheel, and cold aperture stop produces diffraction-limited images with negligible spatial distortion and minimum thermal background loading. The camera electronic system architecture is divided into three subsystems: (1) high-speed analog front end, including 2-channel preamp module, array address timing generator, bias power suppies, (2) two 16 bit, 3 microsec per conversion A/D converters interfaced to an arithmetic array processor, and (3) an LSI 11/73 camera control and data analysis computer. The background-limited observational noise performance of the camera at the NASA/IRTF telescope is NEFD (1 sigma) = 0.05 Jy/pixel min exp 1/2.

New 8 to 13 micron array camera images of the central kiloparsec of Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 resolve structure that is similar to that observed at visible and radio wavelengths. The images reveal an infrared source which is extended and asymmetric, with its long axis oriented at P.A. 33 deg. Maps of the spatial distribution of 8 to 13 micron color temperature and warm dust opacity are derived from the multiwavelength infrared images. The results suggest that there exist two pointlike luminosity sources in the central regions of NGC 1068, with the brighter source at the nucleus and the fainter one some 100 pc to the northeast. This geometry strengthens the possibility that the 10 micron emission observed from grains in the nucleus is powered by a nonthermal source. In the context of earlier visible and radio studies, these results considerably strengthen the case for jet induced star formation in NGC 1068.

Preliminary results from the Hughes 58 x 62 gallium-doped silicon infrared array are presented. The device functioned predictably and repeatedly at the low temperatures for the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF). Power dissipation was reduced to acceptable levels while still maintaining the device speed. The infrared response was excellent and the degree of anomalous effects was compatible to conventional photoconductors.

A 30 x 30 arcsec field at the Galactic Center (1.5 x 1.5 parsec) was mapped at 8.3 microns and 12.41 microns with high spatial resolution and accurate relative astrometry, using the 16 x 16 Si:Bi accumulation mode charge injection device Goddard infrared array camera. The design and performance of the array camera detector electronics system and image data processing techniques are discussed. Color temperature and dust opacity distributions derived from the spatially accurate images indicate that the compact infrared sources and the large scale ridge structure are bounded by warmer, more diffuse material. None of the objects appear to be heated appreciably by internal luminosity sources. These results are consistent with the model proposing that the complex is heated externally by a strong luminosity source at the Galactic Center, which dominates the energetics of the inner few parsecs of the galaxy.

The Infrared Array Camera for the space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF/IRAC) is capable of two-dimensional photometry in either a wide field or diffraction-limited mode over the wavelength interval from 2 to 30 microns. Three different two-dimensional direct readout (DRO) array detectors will be used: Band 1-InSb or Si:In (2-5 microns) 128 x 128 pixels, Band 2-Si:Ga (5-18 microns) 64 x 64 pixels, and Band 3-Si:Sb (18-30 microns) 64 x 64 pixels. The hybrid DRO readout architecture has the advantages of low read noise, random pixel access with individual readout rates, and nondestructive readout. The scientific goals of IRAC are discussed, which are the basis for several important requirements and capabilities of the array camera: (1) diffraction-limited resolution from 2-30 microns, (2) use of the maximum unvignetted field of view of SIRTF, (3) simultaneous observations within the three infrared spectral bands, and (4) the capability for broad and narrow bandwidth spectral resolution. A strategy has been developed to minimize the total electronic and environmental noise sources to satisfy the scientific requirements.

The concept and performance of (SAMSI) Spacecraft Array for Michelson Spatial Interferometry, an orbiting spatial interferometer comprised of three free-flying spacecraft, two collector telescopes and a central mixing station are described. In the one-dimensional interferometry mode orbits exist which provide natural scanning of the baseline. These orbits place extremely small demands on thrusters and fuel consumption. Resolution of 0.00001 arcsecond and magnitude limits of mv = 15 to 20 are achievable in a single orbit. In the imaging mode, SAMSI could synthesize images equivalent to those produced by equal diameter filled apertures in space, making use of the fuel resupply capability of a space station. Simulations indicate that image reconstruction can be performed with milliarcsecond resolution to a visual magnitude 12 in 12 hr of spiral scanning integration time.

Observational results are presented from a new large-scale survey of the first quadrant of the galactic plane at wavelengths of 150, 250, and 300 microns, with a 10 x 10 arcmin beam. The emission detected in the survey arises from compact sources, most of which are identified with known peaks of 5 GHz or CO emission, or both, and from an underlying diffuse background with a typical angular width of about 0.9 deg (FWHM) which accounts for most of the emission. A total of 80 prominent discrete sources are identified and characterized, of which about half have not previously been reported at far-infrared wavelengths. The total infrared luminosity within the solar circle is about 1 to 2 x 10 to the 10th solar luminosity, and is probably emitted by dust that resides in molecular clouds.

The Catalog of Infrared Observations and its Far Infrared Supplement summarize all infrared astronomical observations at infrared wavelengths published in the scientific literature between 1965 and 1982. The Catalog includes as appendices the Bibliography of infrared astronomy which keys observations in the Catalog with the original journal references, and the index of infrared source positions which gives source positions for alphabetically listed sources in the Catalog. The Catalog data base contains over 85,000 observations of about 10,000 infrared sources, of which about 2,000 have no known visible counterpart.

The Far Infrared Supplement: catalog of infrared observations summarizes all infrared astronomical observations at far infrared wavelengths published in the scientific literature between 1965 and 1982. The Supplement list contains 25% of the observations in the full catalog of infrared observations (C10), and essentially eliminates most visible stars from the listings. The Supplement is more compact than the main Catalog (it does not contain the bibliography and position index of the C10), and is intended for easy reference during astronomical observations.

Results of an orbital analysis and performance assessment of SAMSI (Spacecraft Array for Michelson Spatial Interferometry) are presented. The device considered includes two one-meter telescopes in orbits which are identical except for slightly different inclinations; the telescopes achieve separations as large as 10 km and relay starlight to a central station which has a one-meter optical delay line in one interferometer arm. It is shown that a 1000-km altitude, zero mean inclination orbit affords natural scanning of the 10-km baseline with departures from optical pathlength equality which are well within the corrective capacity of the optical delay line. Electric propulsion is completely adequate to provide the required spacecraft motions, principally those needed for repointing. Resolution of 0.00001 arcsec and magnitude limits of 15 to 20 are achievable.

A balloon-borne, 1.2 meter Cassegrain telescope with a servo-controlled chopping secondary mirror has been developed and used to survey the Galactic Plane at submillimeter wavelengths. The telescope pointing system uses a gyroscope as the primary stabilization reference and makes use of microprocessors for pointing control, on-board data collection, and telemetry formatting. A description of the telescope, multi-channel liquid-helium-cooled focal plane and the aspect and orientation subsystems are presented.

The development of a new generation of orbital, airborne and ground-based infrared astronomical observatory facilities, including the infrared astronomical satellite (IRAS), the cosmic background explorer (COBE), the NASA Kuiper airborne observatory, and the NASA infrared telescope facility, intensified the need for a comprehensive, machine-readable data base and catalog of current infrared astronomical observations. The Infrared Astronomical Data Base and its principal data product, this catalog, comprise a machine-readable library of infrared (1 micrometer to 1000 micrometers) astronomical observations published in the scientific literature since 1965.

Observations at 400 microns of the NGC 6334 complex have confirmed the discovery of an unusual 1000-solar mass object, NGC 6334/I(North), which was not detected by broad-band 100-micron survey observations. The results suggest that this cool source (T = 19 + or - 5 K) is an active star formation region in a very early stage of evolution. The observed infrared luminosity of the source, 7000 solar luminosities, requires the presence of one or more embedded B stars or the formation of a dense protostellar core. Derived dust and gas densities agree well with results from molecular line observations of the complex. Nearby 100 micron peaks I and V were also observed.

The infrared astronomical data base and its principal data product, the catalog of Infrared Observations (CIO), comprise a machine readable library of infrared (1 microns to 1000 microns astronomical observations. To date, over 1300 journal articles and 10 major survey catalogs are included in this data base, which contains about 55,000 individual observations of about 10,000 different infrared sources. Of these, some 8,000 sources are identifiable with visible objects, and about 2,000 do not have known visible counterparts.

Observations with 10 arcmin resolution of a 2 sq deg portion of the galactic plane around the galactic center at 150, 200, and 300 microns are presented, obtained as part of a galactic plane survey. In the galactic center region the mean dust temperature is about 30 K. Both the temperature and the dust-to-gas mass ratio in the galactic center region are typical of a large portion of the galactic plane. Three main emission peaks, Sgr A, B, and C, are detected; these peaks appear as dust column density enhancements rather than temperature enhancements. The dust responsible for the FIR emission may only be a fraction of the dust responsible for the visual extinction toward the galactic center.

A computer data base of infrared astronomical observations has been established at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center. It contains a summary of all infrared (1-100 microns) observations of celestial sources outside the solar system, published in the major scientific journals since 1960, as well as the contents of infrared surveys and catalogs. A Catalog of Infrared Observations (CIO) has been developed from the data base in printed and magnetic tape versions. A bibliographic Guide to the Infrared Astronomical Literature, and an Altas of Infrared Source Names and Positions will be published in conjunction with the catalog. Future plans include development of an interactive data system at Goddard which will give a user direct access to the computerized data.

The NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center has developed a computer data base of infrared astronomical observations. The data base represents a machine-readable library of infrared observational data published in the relevant literature since 1960 for celestial sources outside the solar system. It likewise includes the contents of infrared surveys and catalogs. A catalog of infrared observations has been developed in both printed and magnetic-tape formats. The data base will be accessed through a bibliographic guide and an atlas of infrared source names and positions. Future plans also include two-dimensional graphical displays of infrared data and a user-interactive data terminal.

Measurements of the 1.0-mm continuum emission from seven Southern Hemisphere H II region/molecular cloud complexes located in the inner part of the Galaxy near the galactic plane are presented. The sources were mapped based on observations made by a remote-controlled prime focus infrared photometer on the Cerro Tololo 4-m telescope at a resolution of 65 arcsec. The morphologies and physical characteristics of the sources investigated are found to be similar, with dust column densities of 0.006-0.030 g/sq cm, linear extents of 1.5-3 pc, total masses of 20,000-100,000 solar masses and infrared luminosities between 2 and 4 x 10 to the 6th solar luminosities. In all cases, the dense, extended dust envelopes are observed to be singly peaked and centered about one or more compact near-infrared sources, with a radial density distribution around the central peak proportional to the -1.5 power of the radius as in other extended 1.0-mm continuum sources.

Continuum emission at 1 mm has been mapped with 1-min resolution over a 3-min by 8-min area including the compact H II region DR 21, the maser source W75(S)-OH, and the central portions of the surrounding molecular cloud. Peaks in the 1-mm intensity are observed at the positions of DR 21 and W75(S)-OH, and are roughly coincident with less marked peaks in the intensity of HCN and CO emission. An extended component of 1-mm emission is present as well. The principal source of 1-mm radiation is thought to be thermal emission from dust within the molecular gas. The characteristics of this radiation which make it a promising tool for the study of molecular clouds are briefly discussed.

The 1-mm continuum flux from Orion Molecular Cloud 2 (OMC-2), measured with a 1-inch beam, is found to be 0.05 plus or minus 0.01 of that from the Becklin-Neugebauer/Kleinmann-Low (BN/KL) complex. This implies that the average density of dust within OMC-2 is about an order of magnitude less than within the BN/KL region.

It is noted that high surface brightness 1.0 mm continuum emission has been mapped in nine southern hemisphere H II/molecular cloud complexes: NGC 6334, RCW 38, RCW 57, RCW 122, RCW 117, G333.6-0.2, G351.6-1.3, W 33, and W 33A. All of the sources are in the inner part of the galaxy near the galactic plane. New 1.0 mm continuum mapping results with a resolution of 65 arcsec are presented.

The 2.12-micron line of molecular hydrogen was searched for in emission from a variety of southern hemisphere objects, including infrared sources associated with molecular clouds and H II regions, the galactic center, and three external galaxies. Negative results are reported for all sources.

A balloon-borne, 1.2 meter Cassegrain telescope designed for diffraction-limited imagery at 100 microns is being developed for a survey of the Galactic plane at submillimeter wavelengths. The telescope pointing system is servocontrolled using a gyroscope for the primary stabilization reference. Extensive use is made of microprocessors for flight sequencing, pointing control and stabilization, and telemetry formatting. A description of the telescope, helium-cooled detectors, and the orientation subsystems are presented together with a brief discussion of the proposed astronomical observations.

Continuum observations of 23 extragalactic objects have been made at a wavelength of 1 mm; nine of the 23 have been definitely detected at this wavelength. The sources detected include seven from which the 1-mm emission appears to be nonthermal, and two from which the emission appears to be thermal radiation from dust. Repeated observations of the brightest nonthermal sources permitted a search for 1-mm variations on time scales of one month to three years. BL Lac was observed to vary by more than a factor of 2 in flux, and 3C 84, 3C 120, and 3C 273 showed possible variations; 3C 279 showed no variations greater than + or - 30%. The 1-mm variations of BL Lac appear to be correlated with variations at radio wavelengths. The other sources with nonthermal spectra detected were 3C 111 and M87; the two thermal sources detected were NGC 253 and M82. Comparison of the latter two 1-mm measurements with 2.6-mm CO measurements suggests that the CO line in these galaxies is not heavily saturated.

High-resolution (45 km/sec) observations of the 2.12 micrometers molecular hydrogen emission line in the Orion Nebula reveal a single feature with delta V (FWHP) not exceeding 30 km/sec at a LSR velocity of + 9.5 + or - 4 km/sec. The results support the suggestion that the H2 emission is collisionally excited in a thin shock-heated layer inside the cool molecular cloud. For a spherical geometry the shock velocity is, therefore, constrained to be at most 15 km/sec.

Maps with 1-arcmin resolution are presented of 1-mm thermal emission from dust grains in the central portions of the molecular clouds associated with four H II regions: W3, M42 (OMC-1), Sgr B2, and W49. The maps cover regions approximately 5 by 5 arcmin in extent. In each source, a sharp peak in the 1-mm surface brightness is seen at the position of a compact H II region and/or one or several luminous near-infrared sources. The radial density distributions in the center of the clouds have been estimated from the observed distribution of 1-mm surface brightness near the peaks. The results indicate that the central density gradients are quite steep. These gradients may have been established in the clouds by the collapse processes which led to the formation of the central luminous objects.

Broadband photometric observations of IRC + 10216 in five wavelength intervals from 50 to 1000 microns are reported. The observed radiation is interpreted as thermal emission from dust in the extended molecular cloud heated by the compact 2-20-micron source at the cloud core. The shape of the 50-1000-micron spectrum suggests that the emissivity of the dust particles varies approximately as the inverse wavelength over this spectral interval. The mass of dust inferred from the far-infrared emission is comparable with the mass of heavy molecules in the cloud.
