Magnetostructural transition was observed in Ni-Mn-In-Cr Heusler alloy with help of Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM). The crystal structure of a sample and characteristic temperatures of the phase transition were controlled by roentgenostructural phase analysis and magnetometry, respectively. It appeared prominently important to prepare the surface of the sample until the nanometer level of surface roughness. Magnetic study performed with scanning probe microscope revealed existence of magnetic domains, which were spread across the surface evenly. Further studies revealed that intensity of magnetic signal decreases as fading out of the contrast of the MFM images. It was found that location of domains shifted after the heating/cooling cycle above Curie temperature for the studied alloy. Location of new domain walls appeared correlating with surface scrapings and defects, whilst it became independent from those after heating until just 70°C. The mechanism behind the observed transition is proposed.

Fe73.9Cu1Nb3Si13.2B8.9 (Finemet) thin films were deposited on the glass substrates by means of radio frequency sputtering. The films thickness was varied from 10 to 200 nm. Heat treatment at temperatures of 350, 400 and 450 °C were performed for 30 minutes in order to control thin film structural state. The X-ray powder diffractometry revealed that the crystallization of α-FeSi nanograins took place only at 450 °C whilst the other samples stayed in the amorphous state. Relation between the structure and magnetic properties of the films was discussed in the framework of random magnetic anisotropy model and the concept of stochastic magnetic domains. The latter was investigated using magnetic force microscopy (MFM). MFM data showed formation of such magnetic domains only in samples thermally treated at 450 °C. There was a tendency of the magnetic domain size reduction with the thickness decrease.

Generation of electric current is observed when GaAs nanowires with wurtzite crystal structure are bent by the probe of an atomic force microscope. The current originates from a piezo active phase in the nanowires due to the piezoelectric effect. Increasing of the piezo‐potential in bent nanowires enhances tunneling through the probe–nanowire Schottky barrier due to the thermionic field emission. Laser illumination amplifies short‐circuit current pulses by two orders of magnitude from 9 pA to 1 nA due to the piezo‐phototronic effect. Utilization of such piezo‐phototronic effect in GaAs nanowires is a solution to accelerate the efficiency of hybrid energy sources “piezoelectric nanogenerator − solar cell” comprised of III–V nanowires. It is known that structure of the interface between inorganic nanoparticles and polymers significantly influences properties of a polymer-inorganic composite. At the same time, amount of experimental researches on the structure and properties of material near the inorganic-polymer interface is low. In this work, we report for the first time the investigation of nanomechanical properties and maps of adhesion of material near the inorganic-polymer interface for the polyheteroarylene nanocomposites based on semi-crystalline poly[4,40-bis (4"-aminophenoxy)diphenyl]imide 1,3-bis (30,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) benzene, modified by ZrO2 nanostars. Experiments were conducted using quantitative nanomechanical mapping (QNM) mode of atomic force microscopy (AFM) at the surface areas where holes were formed after falling out of inorganic particles. It was found that adhesion of AFM cantilever to the polymer surface is higher inside the hole than outside. This can be attributed to the presence of polar groups near ZrO2 nanoparticle. QNM measurements revealed that polymer matrix has increased rigidity in the vicinity of the nanoparticles. Influence of ZrO2 nanoparticles on the structure and thermal properties of semi-crystalline polyheteroarylene matrix was studied with wide-angle X-ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Mixed-matrix membranes based on amorphous and semi-crystalline polyimides with zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanostars were synthesized. Amorphous poly(4,40-oxydiphenylenepyromellitimide) and semi-crystalline polyimide prepared from 1,4-bis(4-aminophenoxy)benzene and 4,4'-oxydiphthalic anhydride were used. The effect of ZrO2 nanostars on the structure and morphology of nanocomposite membranes was studied by wide-angle X-ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and contact angle measurements. Thermal properties and stability were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Transport properties of hybrid membranes containing 5 wt % ZrO2 were tested for pervaporation of a mixture of butanol-water with 10 wt % H2 O content. It was found that a significant amount of the ZrO2 added to the semi-crystalline polyimide is encapsulated inside spherulites. Therefore, the beneficial influence of inorganic filler on the selectivity of mixed-matrix membrane with respect to water was hampered. Mixed-matrix membranes based on amorphous polymer demonstrated the best performance, because water molecules had higher access to inorganic particles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article demonstrates the possibility of creating memory devices based on polycrystalline mayenite. In the course of the study, structural characterization (XRD, TEM) of ceramic samples of mayenite was carried out, as well as a study of the spectral (THz range) and electrophysical characteristics. Materials obtained by calcination at high (1360–1450 °C) temperatures in an inert argon atmosphere differ in the degree of substitution of oxygen anions O2− for electrons, as indicated by the data on the unit cell parameters and dielectric constant coefficients in the range of 0.2–1.3 THz, as well as differences in the conducting properties of the samples under study by more than five orders of magnitude, from the state of the dielectric for C12A7:O2− to the conducting (metal-like) material in the state of the C12A7:e− electride. Measurements of the current–voltage characteristics of ceramic C12A7:e− showed the presence of memristive states previously detected by other authors only in the case of single crystals. The study of the stability of switching between states in terms of resistance showed that the values of currents for states with high and low resistance remain constant up to 180 switching cycles, which is two times higher than the known literature data on the stability of similar prototypes of devices. It is shown that such samples can operate in a switch mode with nonlinear resistance in the range of applied voltages from –1.3 to +1.3 V. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
