In studies of the visual system as well as in computer vision, the focus is often on contrast edges. However, the primate visual system contains a large number of cells that are insensitive to spatial contrast and, instead, respond to uniform homogeneous illumination of their visual field. The purpose of this information remains unclear. Here, we propose a mechanism that detects feature homogeneity in visual areas, based on latency coding and spike time coincidence, in a purely feed-forward and therefore rapid manner. We demonstrate how homogeneity information can interact with information on contrast edges to potentially support rapid image segmentation. Furthermore, we analyze how neuronal crosstalk (noise) affects the mechanism's performance. We show that the detrimental effects of crosstalk can be partly mitigated through delayed feed-forward inhibition that shapes bi-phasic post-synaptic events. The delay of the feed-forward inhibition allows effectively controlling the size of the temporal integration window and, thereby, the coincidence threshold. The proposed model is based on single-spike latency codes in a purely feed-forward architecture that supports low-latency processing, making it an attractive scheme of computation in spiking neuronal networks where rapid responses and low spike counts are desired., Comment: Accepted for publication in Biological Cybernetics

A method is presented for the reduction of morphologically detailed microcircuit models to a point-neuron representation without human intervention. The simplification occurs in a modular workflow, in the neighborhood of a user specified network activity state for the reference model, the "operating point". First, synapses are moved to the soma, correcting for dendritic filtering by low-pass filtering the delivered synaptic current. Filter parameters are computed numerically and independently for inhibitory and excitatory input using a Green's function approach. Next, point-neuron models for each neuron in the microcircuit are fit to their respective morphologically detailed counterparts. Here, generalized integrate-and-fire point neuron models are used, leveraging a recently published fitting toolbox. The fits are constrained by currents and voltages computed in the morphologically detailed partner neurons with soma corrected synapses at three depolarizations about the user specified operating point. The result is a simplified circuit which is well constrained by the reference circuit, and can be continuously updated as the latter iteratively integrates new data. The modularity of the approach makes it applicable also for other point-neuron and synapse models. The approach is demonstrated on a recently reported reconstruction of a neocortical microcircuit around an in vivo-like working point. The resulting simplified network model is benchmarked to the reference morphologically detailed microcircuit model for a range of simulated network protocols. The simplified network is found to be slightly more sub-critical than the reference, with otherwise good agreement for both quantitative and qualitative validations., Comment: Changes since version 1: filter fitting approach replaced by a new method to directly extract the filters using a Green's functions approach. We prove that when a class of partial differential equations, generalized from the cable equation, is defined on tree graphs, and when the inputs are restricted to a spatially discrete, well chosen set of points, the Green's function (GF) formalism can be rewritten to scale as $O(n)$ with the number $n$ of input locations, contrary to the previously reported $O(n^2)$ scaling. We show that the linear scaling can be combined with an expansion of the remaining kernels as sums of exponentials, to allow efficient simulations of equations from the aforementioned class. We furthermore validate this simulation paradigm on models of nerve cells and explore its relation with more traditional finite difference approaches. There is consensus in the current literature that stable states of asynchronous irregular spiking activity require (i) large networks of 10 000 or more neurons and (ii) external background activity or pacemaker neurons. Yet already in 1963, Griffith showed that networks of simple threshold elements can be persistently active at intermediate rates. Here, we extend Griffith's work and demonstrate that sparse networks of integrate-and-fire neurons assume stable states of self-sustained asynchronous and irregular firing without external input or pacemaker neurons. These states can be robustly induced by a brief pulse to a small fraction of the neurons, or by short a period of irregular input, and last for several minutes. Self-sustained activity states emerge when a small fraction of the synapses is strong enough to significantly influence the firing probability of a neuron, consistent with the recently proposed long-tailed distribution of synaptic weights. During self-sustained activity, each neuron exhibits highly irregular firing patterns, similar to experimentally observed activity. Moreover, the interspike interval distribution reveals that neurons switch between discrete states of high and low firing rates. We find that self-sustained activity states can exist even in small networks of only a thousand neurons. We investigated networks up to 100 000 neurons. Finally, we discuss the implications of self-sustained activity for learning, memory and signal propagation.

Almost all research work in computational neuroscience involves software. As researchers try to understand ever more complex systems, there is a continual need for software with new capabilities. Because of the wide range of questions being investigated, new software is often developed rapidly by individuals or small groups. In these cases, it can be hard to demonstrate that the software gives the right results. Software developers are often open about the code they produce and willing to share it, but there is little appreciation among potential users of the great diversity of software development practices and end results, and how this affects the suitability of software tools for use in research projects. To help clarify these issues, we have reviewed a range of software tools and asked how the culture and practice of software development affects their validity and trustworthiness. We identified four key questions that can be used to categorize software projects and correlate them with the type of product that results. The first question addresses what is being produced. The other three concern why, how, and by whom the work is done. The answers to these questions show strong correlations with the nature of the software being produced, and its suitability for particular purposes. Based on our findings, we suggest ways in which current software development practice in computational neuroscience can be improved and propose checklists to help developers, reviewers and scientists to assess the quality whether particular pieces of software are ready for use in research.
