Testosterone and free testosterone levels decrease in men as they age, consequently inducing andropause symptoms, such as weight gain, fatigue, and depression. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the reducing effect of New Zealand spinach (NZS) on these androgenic symptoms by orally administering its extract to 26-week-old rats for four weeks. Biochemical blood testing was conducted, and the andropause symptoms-related indicators and muscular endurance levels were examined. In the NZS extract-treated rats, the decrease in muscle mass was suppressed, and immobility time was reduced in the forced swim test. In addition, the grip force and muscular endurance of the forelimbs were significantly increased compared to the control group; therefore, NZS extract exhibits a positive effect on the maintenance of muscle mass and improves muscular endurance. The representative male hormones, testosterone and progesterone, in the NZS extract-treated group were 1.84 times and 2.48 times higher than those in the control groups, respectively. Moreover, cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein, which affect lipid metabolism, were significantly reduced in the NZS extract-treated group. Overall, NZS extract shows potential for further development as a functional food material for improving muscle strength and relieving andropause symptoms.

Peanut allergy is a major cause of food-induced anaphylaxis and subsequent fatality. Food allergies are becoming an increasingly important global health issue. This study was undertaken to verify the effects of peanut sprout extract (PNSE) on the inhibition of allergic and anaphylactic responses using a peanut (PN)-immunized food allergy mouse model. Fresh peanut sprouts were germinated for 0, 3, 5, and 7 days using mature peanuts. Mice were then sensitized to cholera toxin plus PNE or PNSE by intragastric administration on days 0 and 7, and were then challenged with PNE or PNSE on days 21 and 35. After 5 weeks, we examined the mucosal mast cell degranulation, ear swelling, and systemic anaphylaxis stimulated by PNE extract, in comparison with PNSE. Subsequently, Ara h1, a biomarker of PNE allergy; serum levels; and Th1/Th2 cytokine production in supernatants of cultured splenocytes were measured. PNSE treatment significantly attenuated the secretion of anti-Ara h1 antibody, mucosal mast cell degranulation, degree of systemic anaphylaxis, and ear swelling and increased the production of IFN-γ and IL-10, with a decrease in IL-4 secretion. The results of this study show that the allergenicity of PNE could be reduced by germination, which caused downregulation of Th2 lymphocyte activity, systemic anaphylactic response, and mast cell-mediated ear swelling in PNE-sensitized mice.

In diverse ornamentals, flower color and fragrance traits have been recognized as major attractive elements in plant breeding purposes. Many consumers want more specific things such as blue rose and carnation in color and unique smell in fragrance. However, these are impossible to develop by traditional breeding tools without available genetic resources carrying these alleles. We studied broad technological methods that have been used to control the multiple traits with regards to flower color and fragrance production. Phytochemicals related to color and fragrance are produced by epigenetic regulation and various genetic factors in the biosynthesis pathways. In this review, we summarized different knowledge about the components biosynthesis pathway and how to control them to make wide ranges of flower color or fragrance. More research outcomes for improving flower color or fragrance through various advanced technologies in the future are thought to be reported.

We obtained a complete mutant line of Petunia having mutations in both F3H genes via Cas9-ribonucleoproteins delivery, which exhibited a pale purplish pink flower color. The CRISPR-Cas system is now revolutionizing agriculture by allowing researchers to generate various desired mutations in plants at will. In particular, DNA-free genome editing via Cas9-ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) delivery has many advantages in plants; it does not require codon optimization or specific promoters for expression in plant cells; furthermore, it can bypass GMO regulations in some countries. Here, we have performed site-specific mutagenesis in Petunia to engineer flower color modifications. We determined that the commercial Petunia cultivar ‘Madness Midnight’ has two F3H coding genes and designed one guide RNA that targets both F3H genes at once. Among 67 T0 plants regenerated from Cas9-RNP transfected protoplasts, we obtained seven mutant lines that contain mutations in either F3HA or F3HB gene and one complete mutant line having mutations in both F3H genes without any selectable markers. It is noteworthy that only the f3ha f3hb exhibited a clearly modified, pale purplish pink flower color (RHS 69D), whereas the others, including the single copy gene knock-out plants, displayed purple violet (RHS 93A) flowers similar to the wild-type Petunia. To the best of our knowledge, we demonstrated a precedent of ornamental crop engineering by DNA-free CRISPR method for the first time, which will greatly accelerate a transition from a laboratory to a farmer’s field.

Chinese cabbage is an important dietary source of numerous phytochemicals, including glucosinolates and anthocyanins. The selection and development of elite Chinese cabbage cultivars with favorable traits is hindered by a long breeding cycle, a complex genome structure, and the lack of an efficient plant transformation protocol. Thus, a protoplast transfection-based transformation method may be useful for cell-based breeding and functional studies involving Chinese cabbage plants. In this study, we established an effective method for isolating Chinese cabbage protoplasts, which were then transfected with the pCAMBIA1303 binary vector according to an optimized PEG-based method. More specifically, protoplasts were isolated following a 4 h incubation in a solution comprising 1.5% (v/v) cellulase, 0.25% (v/v) macerozyme, 0.25% (v/v) pectinase, 0.5 M mannitol, 15 mM CaCl2, 25 mM KCl, 0.1% BSA, and 20 mM MES buffer, pH 5.7. This method generated 7.1 × 106 protoplasts, 78% of which were viable. The gfp reporter gene in pCAMBIA1303 was used to determine the transfection efficiency. The Chinese cabbage protoplast transfection rate was highest (68%) when protoplasts were transfected with the 40 μg binary vector for 30 min in a solution containing 40% PEG. The presence of gusA and hptII in the protoplasts was confirmed by PCR. The methods developed in this study would be useful for DNA-free genome editing as well as functional and molecular investigations of Chinese cabbage.

Drought is the primary abiotic stress that limits yield of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). The study aimed to identify yield-related quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in soybeans using a population of 160 F4-derived lines from ‘Hutcheson’ × PI 471938 crosses, which were cultivated under rain-fed and irrigated conditions. Seed yield was determined based on a total of nine irrigated and five rain-fed environments over two years. Twenty and twenty-seven SSR markers associated with yield (p ≤ 0.05) were identified in the irrigated and rain-fed environments, respectively. Four markers accounted for 22% of the yield variation in the irrigated environments (IR-YLD) and five markers explained 34% of the yield variation in the rain-fed environments (RF-YLD). Two independent IR-YLD and RF-YLD QTLs on chromosome (Chr) 13 (LG-F) were mapped to the Satt395-Sat_074 interval (4.2 cM) and near Sat_375 (3.0 cM), which explained 8% (LOD = 2.6) and 17% (LOD = 5.5) of the yield variation, respectively. The lines homozygous for the Hutcheson allele at the IR-YLD QTL linked to Sat_074 averaged 100 kg ha−1 higher yield than the lines homozygous for the PI 471938 allele. At two independent RF-YLD QTLs on Chr 13 and Chr 17, the lines homozygous for the PI 471938 alleles were 74 to 101 kg ha−1 higher in yield than the lines homozygous for the Hutcheson alleles. Three of the five significant SSR markers associated with RF-YLD were located in a genomic region known for canopy-wilting QTLs, in which the favorable alleles were inherited from PI 471938. The identification of yield-QTLs under the respective rain-fed and irrigated environments provides knowledge regarding differential responses of yield under different irrigation conditions, which will be helpful in developing high-yielding soybean cultivars.

Genome-wide transcriptome analysis using RNA-Seq of Lilium longiflorum revealed valuable genes responding to biotic stresses. WRKY transcription factors are regulatory proteins playing essential roles in defense processes under environmental stresses, causing considerable losses in flower quality and production. Thirty-eight WRKY genes were identified from the transcriptomic profile from lily genotypes, exhibiting leaf blight caused by Botrytis elliptica. Lily WRKYs have a highly conserved motif, WRKYGQK, with a common variant, WRKYGKK. Phylogeny of LlWRKYs with homologous genes from other representative plant species classified them into three groups- I, II, and III consisting of seven, 22, and nine genes, respectively. Base on functional annotation, 22 LlWRKY genes were associated with biotic stress, nine with abiotic stress, and seven with others. Sixteen unique LlWRKY were studied to investigate responses to stress conditions using gene expression under biotic and abiotic stress treatments. Five genes—LlWRKY3, LlWRKY4, LlWRKY5, LlWRKY10, and LlWRKY12—were substantially upregulated, proving to be biotic stress-responsive genes in vivo and in vitro conditions. Moreover, the expression patterns of LlWRKY genes varied in response to drought, heat, cold, and different developmental stages or tissues. Overall, our study provides structural and molecular insights into LlWRKY genes for use in the genetic engineering in Lilium against Botrytis disease.

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is an economically important fruit crop grown for consumption of its large edible fruit flesh. Pentatricopeptide-repeat (PPR) encoding genes, one of the large gene families in plants, are important RNA-binding proteins involved in the regulation of plant growth and development by influencing the expression of organellar mRNA transcripts. However, systematic information regarding the PPR gene family in watermelon remains largely unknown. In this comprehensive study, we identified and characterized a total of 422 C. lanatus PPR (ClaPPR) genes in the watermelon genome. Most ClaPPRs were intronless and were mapped across 12 chromosomes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that ClaPPR proteins could be divided into P and PLS subfamilies. Gene duplication analysis suggested that 11 pairs of segmentally duplicated genes existed. In-silico expression pattern analysis demonstrated that ClaPPRs may participate in the regulation of fruit development and ripening processes. Genotyping of 70 lines using 4 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 4 ClaPPRs resulted in match rates of over 0.87 for each validated SNPs in correlation with the unique phenotypes of flesh color, and could be used in differentiating red, yellow, or orange watermelons in breeding programs. Our results provide significant insights for a comprehensive understanding of PPR genes and recommend further studies on their roles in watermelon fruit growth and ripening, which could be utilized for cultivar development of watermelon.

Calnexin (CNX) is an integral membrane protein that functions as a chaperone in the endoplasmic reticulum for the correct folding of proteins under stress conditions, rendering organisms tolerant under adverse conditions. Studies have investigated the cytogenetic effects of gamma irradiation (Ɣ-IR) on plants, but information on the molecular response under Ɣ-IR remains limited. Previously, we constructed a cDNA library of an irradiation-sensitive bioindicator plant, Tradescantia BNL4430 (T-4430) under Ɣ-IR, in which the Calnexin-1 gene was highly upregulated at 50 mGy treatment. TrCNX1 encodes a 61.4 kDa protein with conserved signature motifs similar to already reported CNX1s. TrCNX1 expression was evaluated by semiquantitative reverse transcriptase PCR and quantitative real-time PCR and was ubiquitously expressed in various tissues and highly upregulated in flower petals under 50 mGy Ɣ-IR stress. The protective function of TrCNX1 was investigated by overexpression of TrCNX1 in an Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) heterologous system. Using plate assay, we showed that TrCNX1 increased the viability of E. coli transformants under both UV-B and Ɣ-IR compared with the control, demonstrating that TrCNX1 functions under irradiation stress. TrCNX1 may enhance irradiation stress tolerance in crops and act as a radio marker gene to monitor the effects of radiation.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a class of RNA regulatory molecules having roles in wide range of biological processes. They have been demonstrated to regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional and transcriptional levels and to function in stress responses in plants and animals, but nothing is known about lncRNAs in Camelina (Camelina sativa L.), an emerging oil crop. Here, we report the first prediction of lncRNAs in the Camelina genome using comprehensive genomic approaches. We examined a Camelina drought stress cDNA library, and 5390 candidate Camelina sativa lncRNAs (CsalncRNAs) were identified, including 670 sense, 692 antisense, 1347 intergenic, and 2681 intronic harboring CsalncRNAs. The identified CsalncRNAs had an average nucleotide (nt) length of 497 bp and were mapped on each chromosome of C. sativa. Functional characterization through gene ontology (GO) and GO motif (GOMo) analysis of neighboring protein coding (PC) genes and motifs in the intergenic CsalncRNAs, respectively, indicated that these CsalncRNAs were involved in transcription-related activity, proteins, DNA and RNA binding, and abiotic/biotic stress response. Approximately 4.6% of CsalncRNA sequences were masked as repeat elements enriched with many repetitive sequences of transposable elements (TE), indicating the involvement of transposon silencing. Additionally, 55 intergenic CsalncRNAs were predicted as targets of miRNA, whereas nine target mimics were identified. Expression profiling of seven randomly selected CsalncRNAs using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) showed tissue-specific expression, and these were highly up-regulated in Camelina leaves under extreme drought. Results of expression profiling indicated that these CsalncRNAs are involved in the progression of Camelina growth and development as well as its response to drought stress. Our results provide a basis for the functional study of lncRNAs in C. sativa that will serve as a valuable resource for future studies of the regulatory mechanisms underlying its growth and development as well as its stress response.

We have developed a cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) marker with the aim of identifying the best species among the different wild Lilium species native to Korea for breeding purpose. The CAPS marker is based on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer genes, which are widely used in the breeding of angiosperms. We cloned and sequenced the ITS regions of nuclear ribosomal genes from 11 Lilium species and deduced the phylogenetic relationships among them. Phylogenetic analysis based on the maximum likelihood method showed that Lilium species formed a monophyletic clade and were divided into two groups that linked to the two sections, Martagon and Sinomartagon, out of seven sections of Lilium. The lengths of the ITS1 and ITS2 regions in the wild native Lilium species were distinct, and nucleotide polymorphisms were distinguished in these regions. A conserved region in the sequence was found from position 330–340 in all the species. We analyzed the SNP sites and found a suitable restriction endonuclease, Eco52I, having six base pair recognition site, to be suitable for the development of the CAPS marker. Among the 11 Lilium species, only the amplicon from the ITS region of L. hansonii contained the restriction site and produced two distinct bands of around 623 and 268 bp upon digestion with Eco52I. The genotyping of the 11 wild Lilium species by the developed marker can be recommended for breeding programs as it provides an indirect selection of plants and can effectively differentiate wild native lilies. The method using CAPS marker is simple, quick, and highly reliable for identifying the best species for efficient breeding of Lilium.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression at posttranscriptional level. They might regulate tolerance to abiotic stress. However, this has not been studied in Tradescantia (BNL clone 3340), an important bio-indicator for measuring the effect of radiation. Up to date, gamma irradiation (γ-IR) responsive miRNAs and their expressions patterns in plants in response to γ-IR stress have not been reported yet. Therefore, putative γ-IR responsive miRNAs from a cDNA library of Tradescantia after radiation stress were predicted in this study by using comprehensive genomic approaches. Here, we identified 37 miRNAs belonged to 36 different miRNA families. The quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis of five randomly selected miRNAs were confirmed that their responsiveness to γ-IR stress. Target prediction revealed that 37 miRNAs targeted 149 genes involved in stress tolerance regulation, light response, redox systems, signaling pathways, DNA repair, and transcription factors. A coordinated reverse expression changes between miRNAs and their target genes further validated that these predicted miRNAs could be γ-IR responsive and likely to be directly involved in stress regulatory networks of Tradescantia. Altogether, these results will provide novel insights to the understanding of molecular mechanisms of miRNAs involved in plant response to γ-IR.

Amino acids in the plant were intermediate metabolites which produced by uptake and assimilation of nitrogen and these extracts which gained by bio-chemical digestion from protein of plant or animal were a source of functional fertilizer. This study was conducted to evaluate effects of keratin amino acid fertilizer (KAF) gained from animal hair or hoof on changes of turfgrass quality and growth by investigating turf color index, chlorophyll index, shoot number, clipping yield, and nutrient content in the turfgrass tissue. Treatments were designed as follows; non-fertilizer (NF), compound fertilizer (CF), keratin amino acid fertilizer treatments [CF + KAF 0.26 ml m −2 (CKF), CF + KAF 0.52 ml m −2 (2CKF)], and only keratin amino acid fertilizer treatment (KF). Shoot number, clipping yield, and nitrogen uptake of KF were higher than those of CF. As compared with CF, soil chemical properties, turf color index, chlorophyll index and clipping yield of keratin amino acid fertilizer were not significant, but shoot number and uptake of N and K were increased significantly. These results show that the application of keratin amino acid fertilizer increased shoot number and growth by increased uptake of nitrogen and potassium.

Camelina [Camelina sativa (L.) Crtz.] of the Brassicaceae family is an annual oilseed crop that has received increasing attention as a biofuel feedstock because of its excellent adaptability to low fertility drylands. Even though moisture is one of the critical factors affecting plant growth and seed yield, genetic studies on response to water deficit in camelina have been limited. This study aimed at identifying camelina genes responding to water deficit and validating their expression pattern. Camelina plants were subjected to 1.9 kPa (well-watered), 4.6 kPa (3 days after water stop), 73.2 kPa (17 days after water stop), and 2.0 kPa (rehydrated) soil water regimes. The transcriptome of test and control plants was analyzed using RNA sequences for de novo sequence assembly followed by gene annotation, which was performed against 39 plant species of the Phytozome database ( http://www.phytozome.net ). Six metabolic novel genes that responded to water deficit in camelina were selected for further analysis: PYRIMIDINE 4, CYP89A9, FASCICLIN-like arabinogalactan, eukaryotic aspartyl protease family protein, photosystem II light harvesting complex gene 2.3, and adenosylmethionine decarboxylase family protein. The expression pattern of these genes obtained by real-time reverse transcription PCR and quantitative reverse transcription PCR analysis were similar to that obtained by transcriptome analysis. The up-regulated genes are known to function in protecting cells against water deficit, whereas the genes with reduced expression were found to be suppressed by lower soil water causing a decrease in their function. The information obtained from the molecular validation of the changes in expression patterns of these six metabolic genes presents insight as to which genes of the camelina may account for actively responding to soil water deficit, which will be target loci for investigating the allelic variations or SNP screening in the camelina germplasm for future breeding program.

Superintendents have used a silicate fertilizer to improve a resistance of turfgrass against several diseases, drought damage and wear stress. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of liquid fertilizer containing silicate (LFSi) on changes of turfgrass quality and growth by investigating visual quality, chlorophyll content-chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll, root length, shoot length, dry weight of clipping, and nutrient content in leaves tissue. Treatments were designed as follows; control fertilizer (CF), SiF-1 (CF + 1 ml m −2 LFSi), SiF-2 (CF + 2 ml m −2 LFSi), and SiF-3 (CF + 4 ml m −2 LFSi). As compared with CF, soil chemical properties, visual turfgrass quality, chlorophyll content, and dry weight of clipping of LFSi treatments were not significantly. Contrastingly, shoot density, root length, and the content of nitrogen or potassium were increased by application of LFSi. The content of Si in the tissue was positively correlated with potassium content or shoot length, and similarly shoot density positively with chlorophyll content or visual quality, respectively. These results suggested that the application of LFSi improved the turfgrass quality by increasing shoot density or K content in leaf tissue of creeping bentgrass.

This study was conducted to investigate the potential use of New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia tetragonioides) as a new vegetable crop which will be cultivated in salt-affected soils such as reclaimed areas. New Zealand spinach ecotypes native to Korea were collected across the Southern, Western and Eastern seashore regions of the Korean peninsula, among which fifty-five accessions were later further propagated and evaluated genetically by using an AFLP (amplified fragment length polymorphism) marker. Based on the AFLP analysis performed to uncover the genetic diversity of the collected ecotypes, enzymatic cleavage of the extracted DNA was implemented based on 12 EcoRI and MseI combinations. A total of 1,279 alleles (107 alleles per EcoRI and MseI enzyme combination) were successfully amplified, among which 62 alleles per enzyme combination were polymorphic (58%). The AFLP analysis indicated that the rate of genetic dissimilarity was 29% among the New Zealand spinach collections, which were clustered into the 7 genetic diversity group. This is the first report on the genetic variation in the genus Tetragonia, and the basic information can be applied to select parental lines for enhancing the segregation spectrum of the new halophytic vegetable plant grown in salt-affected areas.

Site-directed mutagenesis of nitrate reductase genes using direct delivery of purified Cas9 protein preassembled with guide RNA produces mutations efficiently in Petunia × hybrida protoplast system. The clustered, regularly interspaced, short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)-CRISPR associated endonuclease 9 (CRISPR/Cas9) system has been recently announced as a powerful molecular breeding tool for site-directed mutagenesis in higher plants. Here, we report a site-directed mutagenesis method targeting Petunia nitrate reductase (NR) gene locus. This method could create mutations efficiently using direct delivery of purified Cas9 protein and single guide RNA (sgRNA) into protoplast cells. After transient introduction of RNA-guided endonuclease (RGEN) ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) with different sgRNAs targeting NR genes, mutagenesis at the targeted loci was detected by T7E1 assay and confirmed by targeted deep sequencing. T7E1 assay showed that RGEN RNPs induced site-specific mutations at frequencies ranging from 2.4 to 21 % at four different sites (NR1, 2, 4 and 6) in the PhNR gene locus with average mutation efficiency of 14.9 ± 2.2 %. Targeted deep DNA sequencing revealed mutation rates of 5.3–17.8 % with average mutation rate of 11.5 ± 2 % at the same NR gene target sites in DNA fragments of analyzed protoplast transfectants. Further analysis from targeted deep sequencing showed that the average ratio of deletion to insertion produced collectively by the four NR-RGEN target sites (NR1, 2, 4, and 6) was about 63:37. Our results demonstrated that direct delivery of RGEN RNPs into protoplast cells of Petunia can be exploited as an efficient tool for site-directed mutagenesis of genes or genome editing in plant systems.

The soilborne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lilii (Fol) is a serious threat to all lily cultivars, especially infecting bulbs and flowers. It has become increasingly important to develop varieties resistant against the bulb rot disease. Genetic diversity of cultivars and reliable screening methods are required for this purpose. Here, an efficient in vitro screening system for evaluating resistance to Fol in 38 in vitro-grown lily plants was investigated. Various factors including culture conditions of Fol, inoculum density, appropriate plant materials, inoculation method and duration, and incubation period of plant materials after inoculation were combined to optimize the screening method. As a result, we suggest optimal conditions for an in vitro screening system for the selection of Fol-resistant lily cultivars as follows. Fol was grown on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium for 6 days at 25°C in darkness and used as working inoculation. Spore suspensions were prepared (inoculum density: 1.0 × 10 4 spores‧mL -1 ), and then leaf segments 1.5 × 2.0 cm 2 were inoculated by dipping for 22 hours at 25°C in dark. Later, leaves were cultured on 0.6% agar plates at 25°C and 50% humidity with a photoperiod of 16 hours light/8 hours dark (fluence rate of 40 μmol・m -2 ・s -1 ) to examine the progress of bulb rot. After 7 days, disease levels were classified into indices 1 (no symptom) to 6 (serious bulb rot). Soil inoculation of Fol carried out with resistant or susceptible lily cultivars that had been selected through in vitro screening confirmed the reproducibility of results. Therefore, the in vitro screening method established in this study is efficient and reliable for selection of lily cultivars resistant against bulb rot disease. C 2015 Korean Society for Horticultural Science 서 언 우리나라의 백합은 2013년 통계 기준 전년 대비 7.3% 재 배면적이 감소하였으나 절화 수출액의 32.5%를 차지하는 등 화훼 수출산업에 있어서 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다 (MAFRA, 2014). 주로 비닐하우스나 온실에서 재배되는 백 합은 그 재배환경으로 인해 뿌리나 구근의 부패병에 많이 노출되어 과다한 농약사용이 문제시되고 있는 것이 현실이 다(Lebiush-Mordechai et al., 2014). 구근으로 번식하는 백 합은 꽃 재배기간뿐만 아니라 구근의 증식, 보관 기간에도 Penicillium sp.와 Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lilii(Fol)균에 인한 감염으로 절화나 종구의 생산량과 품질에 치명적인 저 하가 발생한다(Loffler and Rumine, 1991). 이 구근부패병은 주로 종구나 지하부 줄기에서 감염이 일어나는데, 연작지 사질토에서 발생이 심하고 주로 토양으로부터 전염이 된다. 구근표면에 갈색 부정형 병반이 생기며, 심하면 구근 전체 Korean J. Technol. 33(6), December 2015 884 가 갈색으로 변하여 썩고, 계속 진전되면 인편이 탈락하게 된다(Komada, 1975). 외관상으로는 아랫잎부터 점차 떨어 져버리고 포기 전체가 죽어가기도 한다. 고사한 줄기의 지 제부위에는 병원체의 균사가 하얗거나 붉은색으로 자라나 있는 것을 볼 수 있다. 주로 정식 전에 토양해충방제를 철저 히 하고 작업 중에 상하지 않도록 하여 상처부위를 통한 침 입을 예방하는 등의 방법으로 피해 정도를 최소화하고 있다. 그러나 이러한 방법보다도 더욱 효율적으로 구근부패병을 방제하기 위해서는 구근부패병에 대한 저항성이 있는 품종 을 선별하여 재배하는 것이 중요하며, 이를 위하여 각 품종 의 구근부패병 저항성 정도를 진단하기 위한 간편하고 민감

Water shortage is becoming a serious problem of turfgrass management on sand green. Many superintendents in golf course in Korea have interested in use of irrigation of recycled water for turfgrass water management. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of greywater as an irrigation source on the growth and quality of creeping bentgrass green. Turfgrass was irrigated with tap water (TW) and greywater (GW), under with or without compound fertilizer application (nonfertilizer + TW, N-TW; non-fertilizer + GW, N-GW; fertilizer + TW, F-TW; fertilizer + GW, F-GW). The chemical properties of the green sand soil were not changed by irrigation. Turf color index, chlorophyll index, root length, clipping yield and nutrient uptake of GW treatment were similar to TW treatment. The growth and quality of turfgrass were more likely related with the fertilizer application than irrigation source or quality. These results indicated that GW could be used as alternative irrigation source on the sand greens of golf courses.
