Modelling frameworks that aim to support policymakers in deriving effective measures to reduce environmental impacts should provide both: quantitative information on locally occurring consumption patterns and production systems as well as assessment of policy scenario outcomes. Regionalised models that can deliver on these aims are emerging, but are currently limited in resolution or have other restrictions. An advanced model can be achieved by exploiting the advantages and overcoming the limitations of top-down and bottom-up approaches. In this article, we describe a highly detailed, spatially-resolved modelling framework that quantifies local activities and simultaneously analyses system-wide environmental and economic effects of planned interventions. We combined an existing, highly detailed bottom-up model for Switzerland (focusing on individual households) with a macro-economic top-down approach by developing a new Swiss sub-national, multi-region input-output model. We conducted two case studies to demonstrate its abilities and to highlight its usefulness. First, production-based greenhouse gas emissions and consumption-based carbon footprints were computed for all Swiss cantons and regional differences, interdependencies as well as embodied carbon flows among regions were investigated. We find that rural cantons have higher production-based emissions per gross domestic product than more urban cantons because of different economic structures. In contrast, certain 'city-cantons' entail highest consumption carbon footprints per inhabitant due to high per-capita gross capital formation. Furthermore, this case study discusses the importance of providing regionalised information on effects of measures along the economic value chains. Second, a detailed scenario assuming a realistic lifestyle change for an actual household and a thorough physical retrofit of its home was set up. Regionalised environmental and economic consequences along the supply chains were evaluated. Informed environmental-economic policy decisions require a solid understanding of the economy’s biophysical basis. Global physical input-output tables ( gPIOTs) collate a vast array ofinformation on the world economy’s physical structure and its interdependence with the environment. However, building gPIOTs requires dealing with mismatched and incompleteprimary data with high uncertainties, which makes it a time-consuming and labor-intensive endeavor. We address this challenge by introducing the PIOLab: A virtual laboratory for building gPIOTs. It represents the newest branch of the Industrial Ecology virtual laboratory (IELab) concept, a cloud-computing platform and collaborative research environment through which participants can use each other’s resources to assemble individual input-output tables targeting specific research questions. To overcome the lack of primary data, the PIOLab builds extensively upon secondary data derived from a variety of models commonly used in Industrial Ecology. We use the case of global iron-steel supply chains to describe the architecture of the PIOLab and highlight its analytical capabilities. A major strength of the gPIOT is its ability to provide mass-balanced indicators on both apparent/direct and embodied/indirect flows, for regions and disaggregated economic sectors. We present the first gPIOTs for 10 years (2008-2017), covering32 regions, 30 processes and 39 types of iron/steel flows. Diagnostic tests of the data reconciliation show a good level of adherence between raw data and the values realized in the gPIOT. What could be the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions if the conventional way of maintaining roads is changed? Emissions of greenhouse gases must be reduced if global warming is to be avoided, and urgent political and technological decisions should be taken. However, there is a lock-in in built infrastructures that is limiting the rate at which emissions can be reduced. Self-healing asphalt is a new type of technology that will reduce the need for fossil fuels over the lifetime of a road pavement, at the same time as prolonging the road lifespan. In this study we have assessed the benefits of using self-healing asphalt as an alternative material for road pavements employing a hybrid input–output-assisted Life-Cycle Assessment, as only by determining the plausible scenarios of future emissions will policy makers identify pathways that might achieve climate change mitigation goals. We have concluded that self-healing roads could prevent a considerable amount of emissions and costs over the global road network: 16% lower emissions and 32% lower costs compared to a conventional road over the lifecycle.

The challenges of mitigating and adapting to climate change, achieving inclusive food, water, energy and health security, addressing urban vulnerabilities, and the unequal burdens of nature deterioration, are not only predicaments on their own right. Because they interact, often exacerbating each other, they create new risks and uncertainties for people and nature. It is now evident that the rapid deterioration of nature, including that of the global environmental commons on land, ocean, atmosphere and biosphere, upon which humanity as a whole depends, are interconnected and their cascading effects compromise societal goals and aspirations from local to global levels. Growing efforts to respond to these challenges and awareness of our dependence on nature have opened new opportunities for action and collaboration towards fairer and more sustainable futures.The global assessment on biodiversity and ecosystem services (GA) has been designed to be a comprehensive and ambitious intergovernmental integrated assessment of recent anthropogenic transformations of Earth?s living systems, the roots of such transformations, and their implications to society. In the chapters that follow, our mandate is to critically assess the state of knowledge on recent past (from the 1970s), present and possible future trends in multi-scale interactions between people and nature, taking into consideration different worldviews and knowledge systems, including those representing mainstream natural and social sciences and the humanities, and indigenous and local knowledge systems. Economic globalisation refers to flows of trade and capital among and between countries. A critical view on economic globalisation is that the historical forces influencing how and when a given country becomes integrated into global trade (and the world economy as a whole) condition the potential paths of development open to that country (e.g., Ref. [1]). Here, trade and other relations between countries act as structural mechanisms enabling wealthier, more core countries to maintain favourable terms of trade, which, in turn, negatively impact less developed, more peripheral ones in a variety of ways [2, 3].
