Abstract

Three layers film shaped by thermocompression of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer and polycarbonate have been analyzed in dynamic mechanical thermal analysis in tensile mode. They present two peaks as the film is loaded perpendicularly to the layers and three peaks as the film is loaded in parallel to the layers. Numerical computations confirm that the origin of this peak is not related to a mechanical issue such as the transmission of the imposed deformation from one layer to the other. Using this method, it is demonstrated that this third peak can only be obtained assuming a material transition with its own behavior between layers. Tan δ measurements provide a simple and useful experimental tool to understand more about the interfacial zone in polymer blends. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study addresses the multiscale analysis of acrylic urethane networks (AUN). To establish the kinetic model for predicting AUN oxidation, this study considered the pure thermal oxidation of AUN at 160, 180, and 200 degrees C. Chemical changes were monitored using infrared spectroscopy. These indicated the presence of an imide, presumably generated from the oxidation of CH2 at the alpha-position of nitrogen. On the macromolecular and macroscopic scales, oxidation was shown to induce predominant crosslinking, leading to a drop in toughness (i. e., embrittlement). The novel kinetic model of AUN thermal aging was developed from a mechanistic scheme previously established for polyamide 11, by adding some extra paths of thermolytic alkyl radical formation, oxidative N-H bonds decomposition and coupling of aminyl radicals.

Abstract

Self‐assembly of high molecular weight commercially available low χ ABA triblock copolymers with ionic liquids (ILs) was observed after solvent casting without the implementation of an additional annealing step. Here, the addition of an IL to a triblock copolymer poly(methyl methacrylate‐b‐butyl acrylate‐b‐methyl methacrylate) (MAM) with an elastomeric central block and rigid end blocks is proposed to tune the self‐assembled morphology. Two different compositions of this copolymer with different initial microstructures (ill‐defined morphology without long‐range order and a lamellar morphology) were selected. The selectivity of the IL addition in one of the block phases was studied through the evolution of the glass transition of both blocks. The impact of the IL weight concentration on the morphology as well as the domain spacing is presented. Adding IL to the first copolymer detected a lyotropic disorder–order transition towards a gyroid morphology, observed even for a high molecular weight copolymer due to the low χ parameter, and for higher IL content a second transition to a lamellar morphology was observed. For the second copolymer, only an order–order transition (lamellae to cylinders) could be detected at high IL content. IL also enhanced the long‐range ordering of the MAM morphology obtained through solvent casting without additional annealing steps, compared with the same composition without IL. © 2022 Society of Industrial Chemistry. Abstract

The significant increase of Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) has led to an important research in upgrading recycled engineering plastics by means of a blending technique. In particular, there is an interest in studying the properties of ABS/PC blends, the two most important components of WEEE, at ABS rich compositions, according to the generation ratio of waste [1]. Since ABS and PC are immiscible, the final properties depend to a large extent on the flow-induced morphology [2]. In order to better control the final blend morphology of injection molded samples, we propose a two-step approach: the first step consists in producing pellets with multilayered structure, using a multilayer coextrusion device. During the second subsequent step, the pellets are injection molded, with temperature conditions chosen to minimize the deformation of the created structures. The effect of a compatibilizer, namely, an ABS grafted with maleic anhydride (ABS-g-MA) [3] on the thermomechanical properties and morphology has been investigated.

40. Polyelectrolyte Membranes Containing Lithium Malonato(difluoro)borate for Lithium-Ion Systems

Abstract

A new salt, lithium malonato(difluoro)borate (LiMDFB), and two similar analogues, were synthesized and incorporated into polymer electrolyte membranes to investigate the bulk and interfacial properties as both a binary salt system and a single-ion conducting electrolyte for lithium ion batteries. Symmetric lithium/lithium cells were assembled with membranes composed of polyethylene oxide (PEO) doped with LiMDFB analogues along with LiTFSI for comparison. Conductivities and exchange current densities were determined from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements and the interfacial impedance was shown contribute significantly to the overall impedance for LiMDFB cells.
