Abstract

In role-playing games a Game Master (GM) is the player in charge of the game, who must design the challenges the players face and narrate the outcomes of their actions. In this work we discuss some challenges to model GMs from an Interactive Storytelling and Natural Language Processing perspective. Following those challenges we propose three test categories to evaluate such dialogue systems, and we use them to test ChatGPT, Bard and OpenAssistant as out-of-the-box GMs., Comment: 11 pages. Abstract

During 2015 and early 2016, the cultural application of Computational Creativity research and practice took a big leap forward, with a project where multiple computational systems were used to provide advice and material for a new musical theatre production. Billed as the world's first 'computer musical... conceived by computer and substantially crafted by computer', Beyond The Fence was staged in the Arts Theatre in London's West End during February and March of 2016. Various computational approaches to analytical and generative sub-projects were used to bring about the musical, and these efforts were recorded in two 1-hour documentary films made by Wingspan Productions, which were aired on SkyArts under the title Computer Says Show. We provide details here of the project conception and execution, including details of the systems which took on some of the creative responsibility in writing the musical, and the contributions they made. We also provide details of the impact of the project, including a perspective from the two (human) writers with overall control of the creative aspects the musical.

21. Storytelling systems: Progress towards generation informed by models of the reader

Abstract

The present paper attempts to identify specific points of contact between efforts to generate narrative in the field of artificial intelligence and the field of narratology. Such points of contact centre around the tasks of modelling processes related to the construction of narrative in computational terms. A number of existing research efforts to develop systems related to storytelling are reviewed. An analysis of the functionalities that they cover suggests that storytelling might be profitably studied in terms of at least four different sub-tasks: Fabula generation, narrative discourse composition, text generation, and narrative interpretation. An analysis from a computational point of view of the context in which narrative is used as a means of communication between author and reader is presented. This shows that parts of the cognitive processes involved are yet to be modelled, which suggests that the set of sub-tasks identified may continue to grow with further research.

22. Compositionality for Presuppositions over Tableaux

Abstract

Tableaux originate as a decision method for a logical language. They can also be extended to obtain a structure that spells out all the information in a set of sentences in terms of truth value assignments to atomic formulas that appear in them. This approach is pursued here. Over such a structure, compositional rules are provided for obtaining the presuppositions of a logical statement from its atomic subformulas and their presuppositions. The rules are based on classical logic semantics and they are shown to model the behaviour of presuppositions observed in natural language sentences built with {\em if \ldots then}, {\em and} and {\em or}. The advantages of this method over existing frameworks for presuppositions are discussed.
