3. Efecto de la enzima proteasa y polifenoloxidasa en la calidad del cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) fino de aroma en el proceso de fermentación

Abstract

Actualmente la región Ayacucho produce derivados del cacao fino de aroma, pero su calidad no alcanza los estándares internacionales, principalmente por su acidez, amargor y astringencia. El objetivo de la investigación fue determinar el efecto de la enzima proteasa y polifenoloxidasa en la calidad del cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) fino de aroma en el proceso de fermentación”, en la materiales y métodos se planteó la adición de enzimas como la proteasa (0.25% y 0.5% P) y la polifenoloxidasa (0.25% y 0.5% PPO) para conseguir la mejora de la calidad organoléptica. En resultados se determinó las características físicas de los granos del grano de cacao (longitud, diámetro, espesor, peso y testa) resultando inferior a los reportados por (Arango, 2017) y superiores a los reportados por (Andrade, et al., 2019). Asimismo, las características químicas de los granos fueron superiores en humedad, proteínas, grasa, cenizas a los reportados por (Calderón, 2002; López, 2015). El menor índice de fermentación (IF) alcanzo el tratamiento T0 (IF=0.872), y el mejor el tratamiento el T4(IF=1.196), demostrando que este índice se mejora a medida que se incrementó la concentración de enzimas. En la variación del color, el tratamiento T4 (∆E:44,88) alcanzo la mayor variación del color en comparación con el T0(∆E:23,98). En aceptabilidad el tratamiento T4 (5,80), alcanzo el mayor puntaje; en conclusión, la enzima polifenoloxidasa origino mejores características sensoriales al oxidar a los polifenoles y enmascaro el nivel de amargor y la astringencia de las barras de cacao.

Abstract

Este estudo tem como objetivo enfatizar a relação entre ortodontistas e periodontistas no intuito de melhorar os resultados do tratamento ortodôntico. A observação da formação de invaginações gengivais durante o fechamento do espaço de extrações pode gerar dificuldades na finalização e estabilização dos dentes adjacentes a estes espaços. A recidiva de dentes movimentados ortodonticamente pode ocorrer em virtude das fibras transeptais. O correto paralelismo radicular, uma fibrotomia criteriosa e a retenção imediata e adequada são procedimentos indispensáveis para se atingir a estabilidade nos casos tratados. Melhores resultados podem ser obtidos com a realização de fibrotomia supracrestal no local da extração prevenindo a recidiva nesta região.The objetive of this study was to emphasize the orthodontists and periodontists relationship to enhance periodontal tissue during finishing and maintenance of orthodontic treatment results. The observation of the gingival tissue clefts during the extraction spaces closure phase can generate difficulties to finishing and stabilization of the adjacent teeth to the extraction sites. The relapse of the orthodontically moved teeth can probably be caused by the transeptal fibers. The correct root parallelism, a criterious fibertomy and immediate and adequate retention are indispensable procedures to achieve orthodontic treated cases stability. Better results are obtained with supracrestal fibertomy in severe rotated teeth and gingival hyperplasia in extraction sites preventing relapse in these region.

26. Effect of thinning eucalyptus trees on soybean productivity in integrated crop-livestock-forestry systems

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of integrated crop-livestock-forestry (ICLF) systems and the thinning of eucalyptus trees on the agronomical performance of soybean. Treatments consisted of cultivation under: crops under full sunlight (CFS) conditions; ICLF with triple-row tree configuration (ICLFT) in which trees were submitted to selective thinning in the fifth year after planting through removal of 50% of trees while maintaining triple-row bands; and ICLF with single-row tree band configuration (ICLFS) in which the lateral rows of the triple-row tree bands were subjected to systematic thinning at the fourth year after planting. The physiological and agronomical variables of the soybean crop were evaluated at the R5 and R8 reproductive stages during the eighth harvesting season (2018/2019). Soybean sampling was carried out at five random positions in the CFS and in four transects at distances of 3, 6, 10 and 15 m from the tree bands in both the north and south faces of the ICLF systems. There were no differences between soybean grown under the ICLF and CFS systems with respect to specific leaf area, plant density, lodging index and mass of a thousand grains. However, the ICLF increased dry leaf mass and leaf area index and reduced soybean plant heights. Soybean productivity was reduced by 26% in ICLF-T and 14% in ICLF-S, that is, a 12% reduction in the productivity loss with systematic thinning. It is concluded that ICLF reduces soybean productivity in the effective grain production area of the system, regardless of the degree of thinning, although systematic thinning by removing the lateral tree lines to conversion of triple-rows into single-rows minimizes the loss of soybean grain yield.

Abstract

Acaricis danutae sp. nov. Beard & Gerson (Figs 1–5) Types. Holotype. ♀. Australia, New South Wales, Cooyal, private property of E. & R. McGanigles, 11.i.1998, ex. native sedge Carex sp. (Cyperaceae), D. Knihinicki, deposited in ASCU. Paratypes. Same data as holotype (all on separate slides): 1 ♀, 1 ♂, deposited in ANIC; 1 ♀, 1 ♂ in QM; 1 ♀ in DEFARI. Female. Dorsum. (Fig. 1) Body measurements: length between setae v2-h1 399–423, width between setae sc2-sc2 164–172, c3-c3 168–170, f2-f2 128–136. Dorsal cuticle relatively smooth; prodorsum mostly smooth with light longitudinal sculpturing; light coarse transverse striations between setae sc1 and d1; smooth between setae d1 and e1; light longitudinal striations laterad setae e1, forming u-shaped pattern posterad setae e1. Elongate, forked rostral shield present (internal depth 25-29). Most dorsal setae short, smooth; setae f2, f3 and h1 thick, broadly lanceolate, barbed; setae h2 elongate, with minute distal club. Dorsal setae measurements: v2 5–7, sc1 6–9, sc2 7–11, c3 6–7, d1 7–9, d3 5–7, e1 6 –7, e3 7 –8, f2 16–19, f3 19–23, h1 18–26, h2 144–176. Palpi. (see Fig. 2) Palpi four segmented. Setal formula: 0, 0, 2, 0 (2 eupathidia). Palpal tarsus with two eupathidia (6–7, 7–8). Venter. (Fig. 2) Cuticle almost completely plicate, covered with fine, mostly transverse striae, except small smooth area between setae 1a and coxa I; fine striae becoming coarse along anterolateral margin of body; striae longitudinal laterad genital area and setae 4a2. Setae g1 inserted anterior to setae g2 on genital flap. Setae 1a, 4a1 and 4a2 elongate, fine (difficult to determine full length); setae 1a and 4a1 each with minute distal club. Setal measurements: 1a 163–191, 1b 13–18, 1c 15–18, 2b 21–27, 2c 18–23, 3a 16–21, 3b 21–25, 4a1 116–134, 4a2 87–120, 4b 20–23, ag1 13–18, g1 16–20, g2 16–18, ps1 15–21, ps2 14–17. Spermatheca. (Fig. 3) A short, narrow, unsclerotised tube from the genital opening (mesad setae ps2) becoming sclerotised for 12 µm before ending in a rounded to dome-shaped vesicle. Legs. (Figs 1, 2) Setal formula for legs I–IV (coxae to tarsi): 2-1-4-2-5-8(1), 2-1-4-2-5-8(1), 1-1-2-1-3-5, 1-0-2-0-3-5 respectively. Tarsi I and II each with one abaxial solenidion (ta I 7–10; ta II 7–9) and two eupathidia distally (ta I 10–11, 8–9; ta II 10–11, 8–9). Male. Dorsum. (Fig. 4): Body measurements: length between setae v2-h1 318–329, width between setae sc2-sc2 131-142, c3-c3 131–132, f2-f2 82–88, width at “waist” (level with coxae IV) 73–77. Dorsal cuticle relatively smooth; prodorsum mostly smooth with light longitudinal sculpturing; light coarse transverse striations in a band anterior to row C setae; narrow band of transverse striae at level of coxae IV; light longitudinal striations along lateral margin of body forming a u-shaped pattern posterad setae e1. Elongate, forked rostral shield present (internal depth 23-25). Most dorsal setae short, smooth; setae f2, f3 and h2 broadly lanceolate, barbed; setae h1 elongate, ending in a minute club. Setal measurements: v2 6–7, sc1 5–6, sc2 6–8, c3 5–7, d1 6–7, d3 5–6, e1 6 –7, e3 6 –7, f2 16–17 (one specimen with one aberrant f2 = 110 long), f3 12–18, h1 14–18, h2 124–146. Palpi. (see Figs 4, 5) Palpi four segmented. Setal formula: 0, 0, 2, 0 (2 eupathidia). Palp tarsus with two eupathidia (7, 8). Venter. (Fig. 5) Ventral cuticle almost completely plicate, covered in mostly transverse striae; cuticle smooth between setae 1a and coxae I, and around setae ag1; a band of strong, transverse striae located between coxae IV. Setae 1a and 4a1 elongate, ending in minute clubs. Setal measurements: 1a 138–165, 1b 14–16, 1c 11–14, 2b 18–24, 2c 16–18, 3a 12–17, 3c 17–21, 4a1 124–140, 4a2 13–18, 4b 16–20, ag1 14–19, g1 14–20, g2 15–20, ps1 12–15, ps2 10–11. Aedeagus. (see Fig. 5) Aedeagus narrow, elongate and sclerotised (66–70), tapering to a point posteriorly (at genital opening); a narrow unsclerotised tube runs from the sclerotised aedeagus to a broad, lightly sclerotised, cone-shaped vesicle (16 wide, 7 deep). Legs. (Figs 4, 5) Setal formula for legs I–IV (coxae to tarsi): 2-1-4-2-5-9(2), 2-1-4-2-5-9(2), 1-1-2-1-3-5, 1-0-2-0-3-5 respectively. Tarsus I and II each with two solenidia (one adaxial, one abaxial) (ta I 9, 10–12; ta II 8–10, 9–12 respectively) and two eupathidia (ta I 9–10, 7–9; ta II 8–10, 8–9). Host. Carex sp. (Cyperaceae). Distribution. AUSTRALIA: New South Wales: Cooyal. Remarks. All specimens examined were measured for the description. Acaricis danutae (A. d.) can be separated from A. plana (A. p.) by the following: A. danutae is a larger mite with the length of the female (v2- h1) ranging from 399–423, and the length of the male (v2-h1) ranging from 318–329; seta sc2 is short and barbed; the dorsolateral seta on femur III is short and stout; whereas A. plana is smaller, with the length of the female (v2-h1) ranging from 345–361, and the length of the male (v2-h1) ranging from 255–269; seta sc2 is broadly lanceolate and finely barbed; and the dorsolateral seta on femur III is broadly lanceolate and finely barbed. Etymology. This species is named after person who collected it, Danuta Knihinicki.

40. Casting the George Floyd Story in a Broader Context

Abstract

On 9 June 2020, viewers around the globe were glued to international TV networks to watch the live coverage of the funeral of George Floyd, an African-American man who was killed by the police during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25 2020. Police brutality against African-Americans is not something new and this is what led to the slogan ‘Black Lives Matter’ that has been the lodestar of the recent waves of protest. The American Police Force is embedded with systemic racism which seems to have been reinforced by Donald Trump’s presidency. However, the brutal killing of Floyd should be understood in a broader context. The Black race has gone through many dehumanising experiences, including the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, colonialism, and all manner of discrimination. This, in turn, has led to an inferiority complex because, for the most part, we have been defined by others – and not in the most positive of terms to say the least. There is a need for a conscious paradigm shift to transcend from a negative self-image to a positive one on the part of Black people all over the world. It is high time we stood up to define ourselves.

45. The anti-corruption mechanisms in the Anti-Corruption Act no. 8 of 2003

Abstract

The crux of the research problem is to postulate a discourse that the anti-corruption mechanisms as stipulated in the Anti-Corruption Act (Act No. 8 of 2003) are not adequate enough to combat corruption. The main objective of the paper is to examine these mechanisms in order to support the above argument. The other objectives are to draw lessons from previous anti-corruption institutional and legal framework and other best practices. To strengthen the argument, literature review was done on the types of corruption, causes of corruption, effects of corruption and the key elements of a successful anti-corruption strategy. A planning, monitoring and evaluation model, developed for the World Conservation Union, was used to provide a theoretical framework for the implementation of the anti-corruption mechanisms in Namibia. The research findings that were arrived at support the research problem as postulated above, i. e. that these mechanisms are not adequate to combat corruption. The conclusions drawn from these findings are that although these mechanisms seem to be strong on the investigation of corruption and the protection of whistleblowers, for the most part, they seem to be thin on some key issues, like the level of seniority of the Director and powers to prosecute. The key recommendations of the paper are that firstly, there is a need to come up with a comprehensive anti corruption strategy that is underpinned by investigation, prevention, public education and institution building and secondly, that the anti-corruption programme should be implemented on the basis of the planning, monitoring and evaluation model referred to above and that the legislation process should be one of the activities of the programme
