Abstract: This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $a_{\mu} = (g-2)/2$, and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $d_{\mu}$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $a_{\mu}$ and $d_{\mu}$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon $g-2$ experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1,000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $a_{\mu}$ is statistical uncertainty of 450 part per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. The goal for EDM is a sensitivity of $1.5\times 10^{-21}~e\cdot\mbox{cm}$., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: Polarimeters were developed to measure the polarization of the proton beam at RHIC in relative scale through the asymmetry measurement of the elastic proton-carbon scattering. Recoil carbon ions with kinetic energy of 400 ≤ E ≤ 900 keV were detected by silicon strip detectors installed at 90° with respect to the beam. The absolute polarization is given by normalizing against another polarimeter implemented at RHIC, namely a polarized hydrogen gas jet polarimeter. In this report, the details of polarization measurements, data analysis, and systematic uncertainties are discussed based on the data taken during √s = 200 GeV operation of Run05 at RHIC.

Abstract: The g-2 experiment dipole consists of a single 48 turn, 15.1 meter diameter outer solenoid and a pair of 24 turn inner solenoids, 13.4 meters in diameter. The inner solenoids are hooked in series and are run at a polarity that is opposite that of the outer solenoid, thus creating a dipole field in the space between the inner and outer solenoids. The dipole flux is returned by a C shaped continuous iron yoke. The superconducting solenoid coils are closely coupled to the solenoid mandrels and as such are subject to quench back. This report presents the results of various tests on the g-2 magnet system operating within its iron return yoke. These tests include quench back time constant measurements for the inner and outer solenoids and measurements of the response of the two-phase forced cooled helium cryogenic system to magnet quenches. The overall effectiveness of the g-2 magnet quench protection system was measured.

4. High Energy Hadron Polarimetry

Abstract: Proton polarimetry at RHIC uses the interference of electromagnetic (EM) and hadronic scattering amplitudes. The EM spin‐flip amplitude for protons is responsible for the proton's anomalous magnetic moment, and is large. This then generates a significant analyzing power for small angle elastic scattering. RHIC polarimetry has reached a 5% uncertainty on the beam polarization, and seems capable of reducing this uncertainty further. Polarized neutron beams are also interesting for RHIC and for a polarized electron‐polarized proton/ion collider in the future. In this case, deuterons, for example, have a very small anomalous magnetic moment, making the approach used for protons impractical. Although it might be possible to use quasi‐elastic scattering from the protons in the deuteron to monitor the polarization. 3‐He beams can provide polarized neutrons, and do have a large anomalous magnetic moment, making a similar approach to proton polarimetry possible.

Abstract: We present the final report from a series of precision measurements of the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a(mu)=(g-2)/2. The details of the experimental method, apparatus, data taking, and analysis are summarized. Data obtained at Brookhaven National Laboratory, using nearly equal samples of positive and negative muons, were used to deduce a(mu)(Expt)=11659208.0(5.4)(3.3)x10(-10), where the statistical and systematic uncertainties are given, respectively. The combined uncertainty of 0.54 ppm represents a 14-fold improvement compared to previous measurements at CERN. The standard model value for a(mu) includes contributions from virtual QED, weak, and hadronic processes. While the QED processes account for most of the anomaly, the largest theoretical uncertainty, approximate to 0.55 ppm, is associated with first-order hadronic vacuum polarization. Present standard model evaluations, based on e(+)e(-) hadronic cross sections, lie 2.2-2.7 standard deviations below the experimental result.

Abstract: The transverse momentum dependence of the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v(2), the second harmonic of the azimuthal distribution, for electrons at midrapidity (vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.35) has been measured with the PHENIX detector in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The measurement was made with respect to the reaction plane defined at high rapidities (vertical bar eta vertical bar = 3.1-3.9). From the result we have measured the v(2) of electrons from heavy flavor decay after subtraction of the v(2) of electrons from other sources such as photon conversions and Dalitz decay from light neutral mesons. We observe a nonzero single electron v(2) with a 90% confidence level in the intermediate-p(T) region. The precision of the present data set does not permit us to conclude definitively that heavy quarks exhibit thermalization with the transverse flow of the bulk matter.

Abstract: J/psi production has been measured in proton-proton collisions at roots=200 GeV over a wide rapidity and transverse momentum range by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Distributions of the rapidity and transverse momentum, along with measurements of the mean transverse momentum and total production cross section are presented and compared to available theoretical calculations. The total J/psi cross section is 4.0+/-0.6(stat)+/-0.6(syst)+/-0.4(abs) mub. The mean transverse momentum is 1.80+/-0.23(stat)+/-0.16(syst) GeV/c.

Abstract: Extensive experimental data from high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions were recorded using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The comprehensive set of measurements from the first three years of RHIC operation includes charged particle multiplicities, transverse energy, yield ratios and spectra of identified hadrons in a wide range of transverse momenta (p_T), elliptic flow, two-particle correlations, non-statistical fluctuations, and suppression of particle production at high p_T. The results are examined with an emphasis on implications for the formation of a new state of dense matter. We find that the state of matter created at RHIC cannot be described in terms of ordinary color neutral hadrons., Comment: 510 authors, 127 pages text, 56 figures, 1 tables, LaTeX. Abstract: The anomalous magnetic moment of the negative muon has been measured to a precision of 0.7 parts per million (ppm) at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. This result is based on data collected in 2001, and is over an order of magnitude more precise than the previous measurement of the negative muon. The result a_mu= 11 659 214(8)(3) \times 10^{-10} (0.7 ppm), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is sytematic, is consistend with previous measurements of the anomaly for the positive and negative muon. The average for the muon anomaly a_{mu}(exp) = 11 659 208(6) \times 10^{-10} (0.5ppm)., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters, revised to reflect referee comments. Abstract: Preliminary results from the ’03 RHIC Proton Spin Run on the spin dependence in the elastic scatterring of polarized protons off a carbon target at very low momentum transfer (0.005 < |t| < 0.05 GeV2/c2) are presented and discussed. Proton polarimeters based on this process are used in RHIC and AGS to measure reliably and in very short times the polarization of the proton beams. Polarimetry results from the just completed RHIC polarized proton run are also presented.

Abstract: The anisotropy parameter (v(2)), the second harmonic of the azimuthal particle distribution, has been measured with the PHENIX detector in Au+Au collisions at roots(NN)=200 GeV for identified and inclusive charged particle production at central rapidities (eta 2 GeV/c, in marked contrast to the predictions of a hydrodynamical model. A quark-coalescence model is also investigated.

Abstract: The PHENIX detector is designed to perform a broad study of A-A, p-A, and p-p collisions to investigate nuclear matter under extreme conditions. A wide variety of probes, sensitive to all timescales, are used to study systematic variations with species and energy as well as to measure the spin structure of the nucleon. Designing for the needs of the heavy-ion and polarized-proton programs has produced a detector with unparalleled capabilities. PHENIX measures electron and muon pairs, photons, and hadrons with excellent energy and momentum resolution. The detector consists of a large number of subsystems that are discussed in other papers in this volume. The overall design parameters of the detector are presented. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: Status of the H‐jet polarimeter development is reviewed. A number of design issues are discussed including vacuum system, integration into the RHIC storage ring, scattering chamber, and uniform vertical holding field magnet design. The absolute proton polarization of the atomic hydrogen‐jet target will be measured to 3% accuracy by a Breit‐ systematic error contribution to the jet‐target polarization measurements is also discussed.

Abstract: We have started a program of colliding polarized protons in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven. This is the first polarized proton collider. We plan to probe the spin structure of the proton with strongly interacting probes, polarized quarks and gluons, to complement work with polarized lepton probes which observed that only 25% of the proton spin is carried by quarks and anti‐quarks. We will also use parity violation to search for new physics, such as quark substructure or a Z’ boson. The collider is unique. We will be probing QCD with a completely new tool.

Abstract: A precise measurement of the anomalous g value, a_mu=(g-2)/2, for the positive muon has been made at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The result a_mu^+=11 659 202(14)(6) X 10^{-10} (1.3 ppm) is in good agreement with previous measurements and has an error one third that of the combined previous data. The current theoretical value from the standard model is a_mu(SM)=11 659 159.6(6.7) X 10^{-10} (0.57 ppm) and a_mu(exp)-a_mu(SM)=43(16) X 10^{-10} in which a_mu(exp) is the world average experimental value., 5 pages and 5 figures. Abstract: The muon g-2 experiment at Brookhaven is designed to take advantage of very high proton intensity at the AGS to achieve sensitivity well below the contributions to g-2 from W and Z. The experiment will explore the possibility of new physics coupling to the muon at a mass scale of 5 TeV. This talk presents the experiment, results at 5 parts per million based on data collected in 1998, and data analysis of the 1999 data run which will have a statistical error of ±1.3 ppm.

Abstract: The muon g-2 experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory is described, including its motivation, goal and present status. The latest result based on 1998 data is aμ+=g−2/2=11 659 191(59)×10−10 (5 ppm), where the error is primarily statistical. This value agrees with the present theoretical value. Data obtained thus far and now being analyzed should have a statistical error of about 0.5 ppm.

Abstract: Colliding beams of 70% polarized protons at up to $\sqrt{s}$=500 GeV, with high luminosity, L=2$\times10^{{\rm 32}}$ cm$^{-2}$sec$^{-1}$, will represent a new and unique laboratory for studying the proton. RHIC-Spin will be the first polarized-proton collider and will be capable of copious production of jets, directly produced photons, and $W$ and $Z$ bosons. Features will include direct and precise measurements of the polarization of the gluons and of $\bar{u}$, $\bar{d}$, $u$, and $d$ quarks in a polarized proton. Parity violation searches for physics beyond the standard model will be competitive with unpolarized searches at the Fermilab Tevatron. Transverse spin will explore transversity for the first time, as well as quark-gluon correlations in the proton. Spin dependence of the total cross section and in the Coulomb nuclear interference region will be measured at collider energies for the first time. These qualitatively new measurements can be expected to deepen our understanding of the structure of matter and of the strong interaction., Comment: 51 pages, 22 figures. Abstract: We have begun a program designed to study hard quark-quark scattering with exclusive reactions, focusing on quasi-elastic two-body reactions with all possible quark flavor exchanges. Examples are ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. ..pi../sup -/p, rho/sup -/p, ..pi../sup +/..delta../sup -/, K/sup +/..sigma../sup -/, or K..lambda... Of the two-body exclusives, only elastic scattering had been measured at such large t previous to our experiment. By comparing the relative importance of different final states, the energy dependence of the production ratios of these states, the prominence of resonances such as rho/sup -/ over background in this region, and measuring polarizations where accessible, we have collected a large body of data on hard scattering in a completely new domain. Previously, essential all short distance QCD tests have been for inclusive processes. We have taken data with both negative and positive incident beam at 10 GeV/c on a hydrogen target and will present the first results, for ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. ..pi../sup -/p and rho/sup -/p at THETA/sub cm/ = 90/sup 0/, -t = 9 GeV/sup 2//c/sup 2/. The apparatus consists of a magnetic spectrometer, with Cerenkov particle identification, which selects stable charged particles (protons in this case) at high momentum near 90/sup 0/ in the center-of-mass. Amore » large aperture array of PWCs observes the recoil particle or charged decay products. Cross sections are extremely low, approximately a 1 nb/(GeV/c)/sup 2/ for elastic scattering. We will report on a sample of more than 1000 ..pi../sup -/p elastic events, and on rho/sup -/p, where the rho/sup -/ decay distribution was observed. We find a surprisingly large rho/sup -/p cross section in this large momentum transfer region, with rho/sup -/p about half the elastic cross section, and a striking spin alignment of the rho/sup -/.« less

Abstract: The polarization of Σ0 hyperons produced in an inclusive reactons hasbeen measured for the first time. From a sample of 11 000 events produced by 28.5 GeV/c ptorons in the reaction p+Be→Σ0+X, the Σ0 polarization has a value of +0.28±0.13 at pt=1.01 GeV/c and xf=0.60. The polarization of 53 000 Λ hyperons produced from 28.5 Gev/c protons inthe reaction p+Be→Λ+X has been measured in the kinematic range 0.64
