Generally, mean length of stay and costs for birth hospitalizations increased with decreasing GA. This article describes the implementation of a remote access experiment, called Web-lab 1553B (Digital Data Bus Lab), for courses in the Avionics Systems Program. Its main objective is to present a study about the use of two rotation model subgroups: 1) rotation laboratory and 2) station rotation. In the "rotation laboratory" subgroup, the teacher does not need to leave the classroom, once the access (rotation) to the lab is done remotely and not physically. On the other hand, in the "station rotation" subgroup, rotation is performed by changing the experiment functions, and thus students not having to physically change stations. This article shows some preliminary results, which demonstrate that the application of the aforementioned methods not only increases the teaching-learning process effectiveness (quantitative results) but also improves student satisfaction (qualitative results) and motivation. Two comparative tests were carried out to quantitatively verify the impact on the student's accomplishment: Test 1, following the theory class, and Test 2, following the demo class and lab practice, using the Web-lab 1553B. Results show an average increase of 27.69% in the student grades. Considering qualitative assessments, students' rates for the Web-lab 1553B method showed that 81.25% of the questions achieved rate "5" (top level), demonstrating that Web-lab meets the desired needs. These assessments serve as data sources for the validation of the hybrid teaching models, concerning classes and laboratory practices, as proposed, showing a high potential for practical implementation in different levels of education institutions.

Ionizing radiation one of modern physics experimental teaching in colleges and high school can be easily implemented today due to low coasts of detectors and also electronic circuits and data acquisition interfaces. First it is interesting to show to young's students what is ionizing radiation and from where they appears near ground level? How it is possible to measure these radiations and how to check intensities variation during day, night, dry and wet periods in the same school? For increasing interest and stimulation in others students how to proceed in making the graphics of the ionizing radiation and presenting him in real time using Web internet facilities? Many others facilities like calibration of the detector using low intensities radioactive ionizing radiation sources, make comparison of the measurements and discussions of the results should be possible between many groups of students from several schools in the region of Brazil. This paper presents the experimental procedures including detectors and associated electronic including data acquisition, graphics elaboration and Web internet procedures to discuss and exchanging data measurements from several schools.

A fully sealable matrix-based magnetoresistive biochip has been recently introduced for the detection of biomoleeular recognition events. This work reports results for a 3 x 3 cells matrix comprising hydrogenated amorphous silicon diodes (PIN and Schottky) and aluminum oxide magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ). The noise characteristics of the individual thin film diodes (TFD) and the MTJ were analyzed for measuring frequencies from DC to 1 kHz, allowing the detection of single magnetic nanopartieles with 250 nm and 130 nm diameters. For 50 nm particles, and at 1 kHz, minimum number of detectable labels ranges from 20 (Schottky diodes) to 50 (PIN diodes). Background There is little evidence about the prognostic role of mitral regurgitation (MR) in patients with low‐flow, low‐gradient aortic stenosis undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and outcome implications of MR severity in patients with low‐flow, low‐gradient aortic stenosis undergoing TAVR, and to evaluate whether MR improvement after TAVR could influence clinical outcome. Methods and Results This study included consecutive patients with low‐flow, low‐gradient aortic stenosis undergoing TAVR at 2 Italian high‐volume centers. The study population was categorized according to the baseline MR severity and to the presence of MR improvement at discharge. The primary outcome was the composite of all‐cause death and hospitalization for worsening heart failure up to 1 year. The study included 268 patients; 57 (21%) patients showed MR >2+. Patients with MR >2+ showed a lower 1‐year survival free from the primary outcome (P2+ was an independent predictor of the primary outcome (P2+, MR improvement was reported in 24 (44%) cases after TAVR. The persistence of MR was associated with a significantly reduced survival free from the primary outcome, all‐cause death, and heart failure hospitalization up to 1 year. Conclusions In this study, the presence of moderately severe to severe MR in patients with low‐flow, low‐gradient aortic stenosis undergoing TAVR portends a worse clinical outcome at 1 year. TAVR may improve MR severity in nearly half of the patients, resulting in a potential outcome benefit after discharge.

The signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) and a spin valve (SV) is analyzed by using an integrated electronic platform. The MTJ has displayed lower particle sensitivity due to the spacing between the magnetic labels and the active free layer.

The detection site incorporates a thin-film diode in series with a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ), leading to a matrix-based biochip that could easily scale up to screen large numbers of different target analytes. Detection of 250 nm diameter magnetic nanoparticles by one of the matrix cells is demonstrated.

Kidney transplant is the established treatment for patients with chronic kidney disease but is associated with complications due to the complexity of the procedure. Calyceal fistulas are rare urological complications in transplants caused by arterial occlusion with segmental infarction of the graft. Treatment is based on the extension of the affected area and the clinical status of the patient. For extensive infarctions treated surgically, a total nephrectomy of the transplanted kidney is generally performed. We present a case of a transplanted kidney with polar necrosis and calyceal fistula treated with partial nephrectomy of the affected area, maintaining the graft and preserving kidney function.

Flashback with subsequent flame anchoring (FA) is an inherent risk of lean premixed gas turbine combustors operated with highly reactive fuel. The present study has been performed to characterize flame stabilization in the premixing zone of a lean premixed swirl stabilized burner and to identify critical combustion characteristics. An optically accessible burner was used for experimental investigations under atmospheric pressure and elevated preheat temperatures. The air mass flowrate, global equivalence ratio and preheat temperature were systematically varied to identify critical operating parameters. Hydrogen-natural gas mixtures with hydrogen mass fractions from 15 to 100% were studied to evaluate the impact of fuel reactivity. The air-fuel mixture was ignited with a focused single laser pulse to trigger FA in the premixing zone during steady operation. High speed imaging with OH*-chemiluminescence were applied to observe flame characteristics and evaluate flame anchoring propensity. Flame anchoring limits (FAL) are reported in terms of the minimum global equivalence ratio at which the flame was blown out of the premixing zone within a critical time period. A comparison of characteristic time scales at FAL shows that the main impact during flame anchoring is given by the fuel reactivity and to some ex tent by preheat temperature. A Damköhler criterion is derived from the FAL that allows prediction of FA propensity based on operating conditions and 1-D reacting simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sacubitril/valsartan (Sac/Val) reduces mortality in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) compared to enalapril. However, its effects on functional capacity remain uncertain; consequently, we sought to compare Sac/Val vs. standard medical therapy, in terms of effects on prognostically significant CPET parameters, in HFrEF patients during a long follow-up period. We conducted a single-center, observational study in an HF clinic; specifically, we retrospectively identified that 12 patients switched to Sac/Val and 13 patients that managed with standard, optimal medical therapy (control group). At each visit, baseline, and follow-up (median time: 16 months; IQ range: 11.5–22), we collected demographic information, medical history, vital signs, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, standard laboratory data, pharmacological treatment information, and echocardiographic parameters. The study’s primary end-point was the change from baseline in peak VO2 (adjusted to body weight). We did not observe significant differences between the two study groups at baseline. Similarly, we did not observe any significant differences during the follow-up in mean values of peak VO2 corrected for body weight: Sac/Val baseline: 12.2 ± 4.6 and FU: 12.7 ± 3.3 vs. control group: 13.1 ± 4.2 and 13.0 ± 4.2 mL/kg/min; p = 0.49. No significant treatment differences were observed for changes in VE/VCO2 slope: Sac/Val baseline: 35.4 ± 7.4 and FU: 37.2 ± 13.1 vs. control group: 34.6 ± 9.1 and 34.0 ± 7.3; p = 0.49. In conclusion, after a median follow-up period of 16 months, there was no significant benefit of Sac/Val on peak VO2 and other measures of CPET compared with standard optimal therapy in patients with HFrEF.

Abstract The placement of a suburethral sling is standard treatment for stress urinary incontinence. The transobturator technique (TOT) emerged as an alternative to minimize the risks of the blind insertion of needles, leading to a lower rate of perforation complications compared with the retropubic approach. We present a case of injury to a branch of the left obturator artery following the placement of a urethral sling using TOT, followed by intense bleeding and hemodynamic instability, which was treated with embolization.
