Long linear carbon-chains have been attracting intense interest arising from the remarkable properties predicted and their potential applications in future nanotechnology. Here we comprehensively interrogate the excitonic transitions and the associated relaxation dynamics of nanotube confined long linear carbon-chains by using steady state and time-resolved Raman spectroscopies. The exciton relaxation dynamics on the confined carbon-chains occurs on a hundreds of picoseconds timescale, in strong contrast to the host dynamics that occurs on a few picosecond timescale. A prominent time-resolved Raman response is observed over a broad energy range extending from 1.2 to 2.8 eV, which includes the strong Raman resonance region around 2.2 eV. Evidence for a strong coupling between the chain and the nanotube host is found from the dynamics at high excitation energies which provides a clear evidence for an efficient energy transfer from the host carbon nanotube to the chain. We report on a study of charge transport in EuTiO$_{3-\delta}$ single crystals with carrier density tuned across several orders of magnitude. Comparing this system with other quasi-cubic perovskites, in particular strontium titanate, we draw a comprehensive picture of metal-insulator transition and dilute metallicity in this $AB$O$_3$ family. Because of a lower electric permittivity, the metal-insulator transition in EuTiO$_{3-\delta}$ occurs at higher carrier densities compared to SrTiO$_3$. At low temperature, a distinct $T^2$ resistivity is visible. Its prefactor $A$ smoothly decreases with increasing carrier concentration in a similar manner in three different perovskites. The tetradymite compound BiSbTeSe$_2$, is one of the most bulk-insulating three-dimensional topological insulators, which makes it important in the topological insulator research. It is a member of the solid-solution system Bi$_{2-x}$Sb$_x$Te$_{3-y}$Se$_y$, for which the local crystal structure, such as the occupation probabilities of each atomic site, is not well understood. We have investigated the temperature and polarization dependent spontaneous Raman scattering in BiSbTeSe$_2$, revealing a much higher number of lattice vibrational modes than predicted by group theoretical considerations for the space group R$\bar{3}$m corresponding to an ideally random solid-solution situation. The density functional calculations of phonon frequencies show a very good agreement with experimental data for parent material Bi$_2$Te$_3$, where no disorder effects were found. In comparison to Bi$_2$Te$_3$ the stacking disorder in BiSbTeSe$_2$, causes a discrepancy between theory and experiment. Combined analysis of experimental Raman spectra and DFT calculated phonon spectra for different types of atomic orders showed coexistence of different sequences of layers in the material and that those with Se in the center and a local order of Se-Bi-Se-Sb-Te, are the most favored., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables
