Abstract

This article provides a review of radon remediation methods and an algorithm of their applications. The methods assessed are applicable for indoor radon originating from the ground beneath or around a building. It was established that radon activity concentration in underlying soil or ground ranging between 15 and 30 kBqm-3 would contribute to an average annual indoor radon concentration from 20 Bqm-3 reaching up to 1030 Bqm-3 in the region, i. e., a 10-15 fold difference, while the average radium concentration in soil was assessed as 30 Bqkg-1. The geo-morphological analysis in the investigated region classifies the top soil as very permeable, containing huge volumes of soil air which is easily transported with the temperature and pressure gradient. It was demonstrated that both soil characteristics and construction characteristics must be taken into account when designing radon remediation methods. One hundred eighty nine buildings were investigated, remediated, and assessed as part of this research work. The average remediation efficiency was established as 50 %. The paper provides an overview of recommended remedial actions and most common mistakes made by construction experts influencing the efficiency of radon remediation.

Abstract

In 2010 one area of Ukraine (Kirovograd area) was selected for a pilot project to reduce radon risks. The project consists of several stages: radon risk training for the public health professionals, measurements of radon concentration in schools and nurseries (more than 1000 buildings were examined), justifications of radon countermeasures and their implementation. The lognormal frequency distribution for equivalent equilibrium concentration was authentically established. The geometric mean of the indoor radon equivalent equilibrium concentration was established to 63 Bq/m3, and standard deviation is equal to 82 Bq/m3. The indoor radon equivalent equilibrium concentration ranged from 22 Bq/m3 to 809 Bq/m3. It was found that the national regulatory limit for this type of buildings was exceeded in more than 50% of the cases. The second phase of the project has a goal to remediate radon levels and reduce radon risks. Calculated exposure doses and radon risk were used to justify the remediation and assess the economic loss for the region caused by radon irradiation of the population.

Abstract

Apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death, is a process fundamental to normal growth and development, immune response, tissue remodeling after injury or insult, and homeostasis of the intestinal epithelium. Recently, it has become apparent that apoptosis is a crucial process in skeletal development and homeostasis, and that signaling by the parathyroid hormone (PTH) receptor can either promote or suppress apoptosis depending on the cellular context. In this study, we evaluated the role of PTH in intestinal apoptosis using human colonic Caco-2 cells. To that end, Caco-2 cells were exposed to PTH ([10.sup.-8] mol/L) for 1-5 days. Evaluation of cell survival by use of resazurin staining, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl) -2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTS) staining, and crystal violet staining revealed that PTH treatment diminishes the number of viable cells. Assessment of cells after PTH treatment by use of propidium iodide showed that the hormone increased the number of red-stained (dead) cells (178%, 5 days). Moreover, we found that the hormone induced disruption of actin filaments with changes to cellular shape, alteration of cell-to-cell junctions, externalization of membrane phosphatidylserine, chromatin condensation, and DNA fragmentation of the nucleus, which are morphological features consistent with apoptosis. In addition, PTH treatment revealed a cytosolic staining pattern of 14-3-3. However, the significance of such differential localization for 14-3-3 function remains unknown. Taken together, the present study suggests that PTH promotes apoptosis in Caco-2 intestinal cells. Key words: parathyroid hormone, Caco-2 cells, apoptosis. L'apoptose, une forme de mort cellulaire programmee, est un processus fondamental de la croissance et du developpement normaux, de la reponse immunitaire, du remodelage tissulaire apres un dommage ou une agression, et elle joue un role critique dans le maintien de l'homeostasie de l'epithelium intestinal. Recemment, il est devenu clair que l'apoptose constituait un processus crucial du developpement et de l'homeostasie du squelette et que la signalisation issue du recepteur de la PTH pouvait soit promouvoir, soit supprimer l'apoptose selon le contexte cellulaire. Dans cette etude, nous avons evalue le role de la PTH dans l'apoptose intestinale a l'aide des cellules de colon humain Caco-2. Pour ce faire, les cellules Caco-2 ont ete exposees pendant 1 a 5 jours a la PTH ([10.sup.-8] M). L'evaluation de la survie cellulaire par des marquages a la resazurine, au 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl) -2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTS) ou au Crystal violet, a revele que le traitement a la PTH diminue le nombre de cellules viables. L'evaluation de la mortalite apres le traitement a la PTH avec l'iodure de propidium a montre que l'hormone augmente le nombre de cellules colorees en rouge (178 %, 5 jours). De plus, nous avons trouve que l'hormone induit une dissociation des filaments d'actine et des changements dans la forme des cellules, une alteration des jonctions cellule-cellule, une externalisation de la phosphatidylserine membranaire, ainsi qu'une condensation de la chromatine et une fragmentation de l'ADN, des caracteristiques morphologiques correspondant a l'apoptose. Un patron de coloration cytosolique de la 14-3-3 σ aussi ete observe suite au traitement a la PTH. Cependant, la signification de cette localisation differentielle de la fonction de la 14-3-3 reste inconnue. A patient’s accurate perception of their DR severity may therefore be critical for effective self-management behaviors and understanding the need for timely intervention and follow-up.Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between self-reported and actual retinopathy severity in diabetic patients.Methods: This study was a single-center cross-sectional survey. Diabetic patients identified by enterprise data warehouse were sent an online questionnaire where they were asked to self-assess for presence of DR and grade their severity. Actual DR grading was determined via chart review. The primary outcome measures were patient-assessed DR severity and agreement with actual DR severity.Results: Of 3208 invitations sent, 324 (10%) patients responded and 319 responses were analyzed. The data showed that 39 of 253 (15%) with no DR, 26 of 40 (65%) with mild/moderate DR, and 24 of 26 (92%) with severe DR believed they had DR (p< 0.001). Of those with no DR, 214 of 253 (85%) accurately assessed absence of DR. Of those with mild/moderate DR, 25 of 40 (63%) accurately assessed their severity, 14 of 40 (35%) believed they had no DR, and 1 of 40 (3%) believed they had severe DR. Abstract

Natural ionizing radiation is considered as the largest contributor to the collective effective dose received by the world population. The human population is continuously exposed to ionizing radiation from several natural sources that can be classified into two broad categories: high-energy cosmic rays incident on the Earth’s atmosphere and releasing secondary radiation (cosmic contribution); and radioactive nuclides generated during the formation of the Earth and still present in the Earth’s crust (terrestrial contribution). Terrestrial radioactivity is mostly produced by the uranium and thorium radioactive families together with potassium. In most circumstances, radon, a noble gas produced in the radioactive decay of uranium, is the most important contributor to the total dose. This Atlas aims to present the current state of knowledge of natural radioactivity, by giving general background information, and describing its various sources. This reference material is complemented by a collection of maps of Europe displaying the levels of natural radioactivity caused by different sources. It is a compilation of contributions and reviews received from more than 80 experts in their field: they come from universities, research centres, national and European authorities and international organizations. This Atlas provides reference material and makes harmonized datasets available to the scientific community and national competent authorities. In parallel, this Atlas may serve as a tool for the public to: • familiarize itself with natural radioactivity; • be informed about the levels of natural radioactivity caused by different sources; • have a more balanced view of the annual dose received by the world population, to which natural radioactivity is the largest contributor; • and make direct comparisons between doses from natural sources of ionizing radiation and those from man-made (artificial) ones, hence to better understand the latter. Abstract

Inledning: Sjuka barn behöver anpassad vård och säkra, effektiva och väldokumenterade läkemedel. Förskrivning och uttag av preparat för pediatriska populationen ökar, men en tydlig uppskattning på problematik finns inte. Problem kan uppstå, när en lämplig beredning saknas, när redan registrerade läkemedel saknar avdelade doser för barn eller är tillgängliga enbart som en tablett med vuxen dos. Varje barn sägs vara en individ med unika läkemedelsomsättning, metabolism och biverkningspanorama, vilket komplicerar behandling. Lösningen på detta är i många fall ett extemporeläkemedel eller ett licenspreparat, men långa ledtider och dålig tillgänglighet kan medföra svårigheter att kunna ge rätt terapi. Syftet med denna studie är att i) kartlägga behov och befintliga lösningar, ii) testa handhållna pulverdispenser (HPD) Quantos, som en lämplig metod för fasta beredningar för att tillhandahålla individuella läkemedelsdoser till barn i de fall godkända läkemedel inte räcker. Metod: Databassökning, intervjuer av hälso-sjukvårdspersonal, samt laborativt arbete för att omformulera registrerade läkemedel i tablettformer till individanpassade doser i hårdgelatin-kapslar med hjälp av Mettler-Toledos handhållna pulverdoseringsinstrument HPD Quantos. Resultat: Litteraturstudien och intervjuer överensstämmer med varandra: behov av barnanpassade läkemedel finns. HPD Quantos kan vara en alternativ metod för fasta beredningar för att tillhandahålla mängderför uppdosering med en femte- och/ eller en sjättedel av en tablett. Slutsats: För att ombesörja behoven för barnanpassade doser på ett sjukhus, måste HPD Quantos automatiseras till en inbyggd doseringsstation. Detta kommer att säkerställa dosering, dölja obehaglig smak, samt minska arbetsmiljörisken vid exponering av toxiska läkemedel.

Abstract

Todos los organismos nacen, crecen, se reproducen y mueren. Este ciclo es indispensable para lograr mantener la continuidad del ADN a través de las sucesivas generaciones. Una vez asegurada la transmisión del material genético a la descendencia, la muerte es un proceso inevitable y necesario. Para los organismos sencillos, la muerte, ya sea por depredación, por condiciones desfavorables del medio o por causas patológicas, es un hecho no querido que representa un obstáculo sustancial a la continuidad de su ADN. En cambio, durante el curso de su vida, los organismos multicelulares requieren que muchas de sus células sean eliminadas para que el organismo en su conjunto tenga éxito en la réplica y transmisión del material genético a la progenie. En éstos, la muerte celular no necesariamente implica la muerte del organismo sino que constituye una manera de contribuir a su supervivencia y reproducción. Por lo tanto, la muerte celular es parte esencial del proceso normal de desarrollo, maduración y remodelación de los organismos multicelulares. La muerte es también una respuesta necesaria del organismo frente a mutaciones en el ADN de sus propias células o a agentes xenobióticos (por ejemplo a microorganismos y a agentes químicos) o situaciones patológicas, en procesos como la inflamación o cuando ocurren alteraciones en el suministro normal de sangre a un tejido. Se describe el estadío adulto de la cepa de Echinococcus granulosus, utilizada en la validación de la Vacuna Ovina EG95 en el marco del Programa de Control de Hidatidosis (Provincia de Chubut, Argentina), con el propósito de medir la efectividad de la vacuna Ovina EG95, elaborada por el Laboratorio de Parasitología Molecular de la Universidad de Melbourne de Australia. Se estudiaron treinta ejemplares adultos de E. granulosus (conservados en formol al 10%) cuyo tamaño osciló entre 1,6 y 5,1 mm de largo. Los resultados mostraron que, además de su escólex, el parásito adulto presenta entre 3 y 5 proglótidos. En los ejemplares observados la proglótida grávida siempre era la última, independientemente de la cantidad de proglótidas presentes.
