We present the first lasing results of SwissFEL, a hard X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) that recently came into operation at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. SwissFEL is a very stable, compact and cost-effective X-ray FEL facility driven by a low-energy and ultra-low-emittance electron beam travelling through short-period undulators. It delivers stable hard X-ray FEL radiation at 1-A wavelength with pulse energies of more than 500 μJ, pulse durations of ~30 fs (root mean square) and spectral bandwidth below the per-mil level. Using special configurations, we have produced pulses shorter than 1 fs and, in a different set-up, broadband radiation with an unprecedented bandwidth of ~2%. The extremely small emittance demonstrated at SwissFEL paves the way for even more compact and affordable hard X-ray FELs, potentially boosting the number of facilities worldwide and thereby expanding the population of the scientific community that has access to X-ray FEL radiation. The first lasing results at SwissFEL, an X-ray free-electron laser, are presented, highlighting the facility’s unique capabilities. A general comparison to other major facilities is also provided.

We use time-resolved hard x-ray diffraction to investigate the structural dynamics of the multiferroic insulator TbMnO$_3$ in the low temperature antiferromagnetic and ferroelectrically ordered phase. The lattice response following photoexcitation at 1.55 eV is detected by measuring the (0 2 4) and (1 3 -5) Bragg reflections. A 0.02% tensile strain, normal to the surface, is seen to arise within 20 - 30 ps. The magnitude of this transient strain is over an order of magnitude lower than that predicted from laser-induced heating, which we attribute to a bottleneck in the energy transfer between the electronic and lattice subsystems. The timescale for the transient expansion is consistent with that of previously reported demagnetization dynamics. We discuss a possible relationship between structural and demagnetization dynamics in TbMnO$_3$, in which photoinduced atomic motion modulates the exchange interaction, leading to a destruction of the magnetic order in the system., Comment: 3 figures, 4 footnotes

International audience; The Bernina instrument at the SwissFEL Aramis hard X-ray free-electron laser is designed for studying ultrafast phenomena in condensed matter and material science. Ultrashort pulses from an optical laser system covering a large wavelength range can be used to generate specific non-equilibrium states, whose subsequent temporal evolution can be probed by selective X-ray scattering techniques in the range 2–12 keV. For that purpose, the X-ray beamline is equipped with optical elements which tailor the X-ray beam size and energy, as well as with pulse-to-pulse diagnostics that monitor the X-ray pulse intensity, position, as well as its spectral and temporal properties. The experiments can be performed using multiple interchangeable endstations differing in specialization, diffractometer and X-ray analyser configuration and load capacity for specialized sample environment. After testing the instrument in a series of pilot experiments in 2018, regular user operation begins in 2019.

Thanks to the remarkable developments of ultrafast science, one of today's challenges is to modify material state by controlling with a light pulse the coherent motions that connect two different phases. Here we show how strain waves, launched by electronic and structural precursor phenomena, determine a macroscopic transformation pathway for the semiconducting-to-metal transition with large volume change in bistable Ti$_3$O$_5$ nanocrystals. Femtosecond powder X-ray diffraction allowed us to quantify the structural deformations associated with the photoinduced phase transition on relevant time scales. We monitored the early intra-cell distortions around absorbing metal dimers, but also long range crystalline deformations dynamically governed by acoustic waves launched at the laser-exposed Ti$_3$O$_5$ surface. We rationalize these observations with a simplified elastic model, demonstrating that a macroscopic transformation occurs concomitantly with the propagating acoustic wavefront on the picosecond timescale, several decades earlier than the subsequent thermal processes governed by heat diffusion., 30 pages (including supplementary text), 5 main figures, 9 supplementary figures; corrected author list

Time-resolved x-ray diffraction experiments on the half-doped single-layered manganite $\mathrm{P}{\mathrm{r}}_{0.5}\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{a}}_{1.5}\mathrm{Mn}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ are used to monitor the ultrafast photoinduced dynamics of the structural distortion associated with the charge and orbital ordering (CO/OO). As in the nonlayered three-dimensional counterpart, the ordered phase melts in less than 100 fs after 800-nm photoexcitation and subsequently partially recovers due to thermal equilibration of electronic and vibrational systems. Photoexciting $\mathrm{P}{\mathrm{r}}_{0.5}\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{a}}_{1.5}\mathrm{Mn}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ below the transition temperature of a second structural phase transition that occurs around 146 K (deep inside the CO/OO phase) releases this structural transition, but progresses on a much slower timescale. This additional reduction of crystal symmetry, which we ascribe to a further tilt of the oxygen octahedra, can thus be considered to be only weakly coupled to CO/OO. Furthermore, static hard-x-ray and resonant soft-x-ray diffraction at the $\mathrm{Mn}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{L}_{2,3}$ edges experiments identify correlations between structural distortions and electronic order in thermal equilibrium.

We report on the ultrafast dynamics of charge order and structural response during the photoinduced suppression of charge and orbital order in a mixed-valence manganite. Employing femtosecond time-resolved resonant x-ray diffraction below and at the Mn $K$ absorption edge, we present a method to disentangle the transient charge order and structural dynamics in thin films of ${\mathrm{Pr}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{MnO}}_{3}$. Based on the static resonant scattering spectra, we extract the dispersion correction of charge-ordered ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{3+}$ and ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{4+}$ ions, allowing us to separate the transient contributions of purely charge order from structural contributions to the scattering amplitude after optical excitation. Our finding of a coherent structural mode at around $2.3\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{THz}$, which primarily modulates the lattice but does not strongly affect the charge order, supports the picture of the charge order being the driving force of the combined charge, orbital, and structural transition.

The extension of transient grating spectroscopy to the x-ray regime will create numerous opportunities, ranging from the study of thermal transport in the ballistic regime to charge, spin, and energy transfer processes with atomic spatial and femtosecond temporal resolution. Studies involving complicated split-and-delay lines have not yet been successful in achieving this goal. Here we propose a novel, simple method based on the Talbot effect for converging beams, which can easily be implemented at current x-ray free electron lasers. We validate our proposal by analyzing printed interference patterns on polymethyl methacrylate and gold samples using similar to 3 keV X-ray pulses. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Femtosecond time-resolved x-ray diffraction is employed to study the dynamics of the periodic lattice distortion (PLD) associated with the charge-density-wave (CDW) in K0.3MoO3. Using a multi-pulse scheme we show the ability to extend the lifetime of coherent oscillations of the PLD about the undistorted structure through re-excitation of the electronic states. This suggests that it is possible to enter a regime where the symmetry of the potential energy landscape corresponds to the high symmetry phase but the scattering pathways that lead to the damping of coherent dynamics are still controllable by altering the electronic state population. We use femtosecond x-ray diffraction to study the structural response of charge and orbitally ordered ${\mathrm{Pr}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{x}{\mathrm{MnO}}_{3}$ thin films across a phase transition induced by 800 nm laser pulses. By investigating the dynamics of both superlattice reflections and regular Bragg peaks, we disentangle the different structural contributions and analyze their relevant timescales. The dynamics of the structural and charge order response are qualitatively different when excited above and below a critical fluence ${f}_{c}$. For excitations below ${f}_{c}$ the charge order and the superlattice is only partially suppressed and the ground state recovers within a few tens of nanosecond via diffusive cooling. When exciting above the critical fluence the superlattice vanishes within approximately half a picosecond followed by a change of the unit cell parameters on a 10 picoseconds timescale. At this point all memory from the symmetry breaking is lost and the recovery time increases by many order of magnitudes due to the first order character of the structural phase transition.

The ultrafast dynamics of the octahedral rotation in $\mathrm{Ca}:\mathrm{SrTi}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ is studied by time-resolved x-ray diffraction after photoexcitation over the band gap. By monitoring the diffraction intensity of a superlattice reflection that is directly related to the structural order parameter of the soft-mode driven antiferrodistortive phase in $\mathrm{Ca}:\mathrm{SrTi}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$, we observe an ultrafast relaxation on a 0.2 ps timescale of the rotation of the oxygen octahedron, which is found to be independent of the initial temperature despite large changes in the corresponding soft-mode frequency. A further, much smaller reduction on a slower picosecond timescale is attributed to thermal effects. Time-dependent density-functional-theory calculations show that the fast response can be ascribed to an ultrafast displacive modification of the soft-mode potential towards the normal state induced by holes created in the oxygen $2p$ states.

The Swiss Light Source (SLS) at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) started user operation in 2001. It has been the first medium energy light source to rely on undulators for the production of X-rays up to 20 keV. For soft X-rays, APPLE II-type undulators, providing full polarization control and quasiperiodic electromagnetic undulators, have been installed. The hard X-ray range has been accessed by the newly developed small-gap, short-period, in-vacuum undulators operated on high harmonics. Based on this, FEMTO, the first hard X-ray undulator source for femtosecond (fs) experiments, started operation in 2006.

Next generation X ray sources based on the X ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) concept will provide highly coherent ultrashort pulses of soft and hard X rays with peak intensity many orders of magnitude higher than that of a synchrotron. These pulses will allow studies of femtosecond dynamics at nanometer resolution and with chemical selectivity. They will produce diffraction images of organic and inorganic nanostructures without deleterious effects of radiation damage. © Schweizerische Chemische Gesellschaft.

The SwissFEL X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) facility started construction at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Villigen, Switzerland) in 2013 and will be ready to accept its first users in 2018 on the Aramis hard X-ray branch. In the following sections we will summarize the various aspects of the project, including the design of the soft and hard X-ray branches of the accelerator, the results of SwissFEL performance simulations, details of the photon beamlines and experimental stations, and our first commissioning results.

Femtosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction is used to study a photo-induced phase transition between two charge density wave (CDW) states in 1T-TaS$_2$, namely the nearly commensurate (NC) and the incommensurate (I) CDW states. Structural modulations associated with the NC-CDW order are found to disappear within 400 fs. The photo-induced I-CDW phase then develops through a nucleation/growth process which ends 100 ps after laser excitation. We demonstrate that the newly formed I-CDW phase is fragmented into several nanometric domains that are growing through a coarsening process. The coarsening dynamics is found to follow the universal Lifshitz-Allen-Cahn growth law, which describes the ordering kinetics in systems exhibiting a non-conservative order parameter.

X-ray techniques have long been applied to chemical research, ranging from powder diffraction tools to analyse material structure to X-ray fluorescence measurements for sample composition. The development of high-brightness, accelerator-based X-ray sources has allowed chemists to use similar techniques but on more demanding samples and using more photon-hungry methods. X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs) are the latest in the development of these large-scale user facilities, opening up new avenues of research and the possibility of more advanced applications for a range of research. The SwissFEL XFEL project at the Paul Scherrer Institute will begin user operation in the hard X-ray (2.1–12.4 keV) photon energy range in 2018 with soft X-ray (240–1930 eV) user operation to follow and here we will present the details of this project, it's operating capabilities, and some aspects of the experimental stations that will be particularly attractive for chemistry research. SwissFEL is a revolutionary new machine that will complement and extend the time-resolved chemistry efforts in the Swiss research community.

We use resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering at the Ir-L_{3} edge to study the doping-dependent magnetic order, magnetic excitations, and spin-orbit excitons in the electron-doped bilayer iridate (Sr_{1-x}La_{x})_{3}Ir_{2}O_{7} (0≤x≤0.065). With increasing doping x, the three-dimensional long range antiferromagnetic order is gradually suppressed and evolves into a three-dimensional short range order across the insulator-to-metal transition from x=0 to 0.05, followed by a transition to two-dimensional short range order between x=0.05 and 0.065. Because of the interactions between the J_{eff}=1/2 pseudospins and the emergent itinerant electrons, magnetic excitations undergo damping, anisotropic softening, and gap collapse, accompanied by weakly doping-dependent spin-orbit excitons. Therefore, we conclude that electron doping suppresses the magnetic anisotropy and interlayer couplings and drives (Sr_{1-x}La_{x})_{3}Ir_{2}O_{7} into a correlated metallic state with two-dimensional short range antiferromagnetic order. Strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations of the J_{eff}=1/2 moments persist deep in this correlated metallic state, with the magnon gap strongly suppressed.

We use X-ray diffraction to confirm that the 5M phase of the stoichiometric Heusler alloy Ni2MnGa has an incommensurate modulation with wavevector q = [ 0.428 0.428 0 ] . We find the crystal to be macroscopically twinned with a structure well described by the theory of martensitic phase transitions, though theoretical calculations of the X-ray diffraction rule out the existence of an adaptive phase. The premartensite phase is found to be slightly incommensurate with q = [ 0.341 0.341 0 ] .

We photoexcite SrTiO3 and EuTiO3 in their purely soft-mode-driven structurally distorted phase and trace the structural order parameter via ultra-short x-rays. We observe a rapid decay for SrTiO3 and an intriguing transient enhancement for EuTiO3.

We use ultrafast resonant x-ray diffraction to study the magnetic order in CuO under conditions of high electronic excitation. By measuring changes in the spectral shape of the Cu2+ magnetic (1/2 0 â1/2) reflection we investigate how an intense optical pump pulse perturbs the electronic and magnetic states. We observe an energy shift in the magnetic resonance at short times after the pump pulse. This shift is compared with expectations from band structure calculations at different electronic temperatures. This spectral line shift indicates that although the electrons are heated to effective electron temperatures far above TN on a time scale faster than the experimental resolution, magnetic order persists in this highly excited state for several hundred femtoseconds. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Transition metal oxides are among the most promising solar materials, whose properties rely on the generation, transport and trapping of charge carriers (electrons and holes). Identifying the latter's dynamics at room temperature requires tools that combine elemental and structural sensitivity, with the atomic scale resolution of time (femtoseconds, fs). Here, we use fs Ti K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) upon 3.49 eV (355 nm) excitation of aqueous colloidal anatase titanium dioxide nanoparticles to probe the trapping dynamics of photogenerated electrons. We find that their localization at Titanium atoms occurs in300 fs, forming Ti(3+) centres, in or near the unit cell where the electron is created. We conclude that electron localization is due to its trapping at pentacoordinated sites, mostly present in the surface shell region. The present demonstration of fs hard X-ray absorption capabilities opens the way to a detailed description of the charge carrier dynamics in transition metal oxides.

SwissFEL is a free electron laser facility for hard and soft X-rays at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland. The first hard X-ray FEL named ARAMIS will deliver photons in the wavelength range from 1 A to 7 A in up to three beamlines alternatively. The beamlines are equipped with crystal monochromators, cover the full wavelength range and offer a variety of operational modes.

The timescales for structural changes in a single crystal of bismuth after excitation with an intense near-infrared laser pulse are studied with femtosecond pump-probe X-ray diffraction. Changes in the intensity and reciprocal-lattice vector of several reflections give quantitative information on the structure factor and lattice strain as a function of time, with a resolution of 200 fs. The results indicate that the majority of excess carrier energy that remains near the surface is transferred to vibrational modes on a timescale of about 10 ps, and that the resultant increase in the variance of the atomic positions at these times is consistent with the overall magnitude of lattice strain that develops.

We present a non-comprehensive review of some representative experimental studies in crystalline condensed matter systems where the effects of intense ultrashort light pulses are probed using x-ray diffraction and photoelectron spectroscopy. On an ultrafast (sub-picosecond) time scale, conventional concepts derived from the assumption of thermodynamic equilibrium must often be modified in order to adequately describe the time-dependent changes in material properties. There are several commonly adopted approaches to this modification, appropriate in different experimental circumstances. One approach is to treat the material as a collection of quasi-thermal subsystems in thermal contact with each other in the so-called “N-temperature” models. On the other extreme, one can also treat the time-dependent changes as fully coherent dynamics of a sometimes complex network of excitations. Here, we present examples of experiments that fall into each of these categories, as well as experiments that partake of both models. X-ray absorption spectroscopy is a powerful probe of molecular structure, but it has previously been too slow to track the earliest dynamics after photoexcitation. We investigated the ultrafast formation of the lowest quintet state of aqueous iron(II) tris(bipyridine) upon excitation of the singlet metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer ( 1 MLCT) state by femtosecond optical pump/x-ray probe techniques based on x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES). By recording the intensity of a characteristic XANES feature as a function of laser pump/x-ray probe time delay, we find that the quintet state is populated in about 150 femtoseconds. The quintet state is further evidenced by its full XANES spectrum recorded at a 300-femtosecond time delay. These results resolve a long-standing issue about the population mechanism of quintet states in iron(II)-based complexes, which we identify as a simple 1 MLCT→ 3 MLCT→ 5 T cascade from the initially excited state. The time scale of the 3 MLCT→ 5 T relaxation corresponds to the period of the iron-nitrogen stretch vibration.

The first tunable undulator source for femtosecond hard X-rays in the range 4–12 keV is now in operation at the SLS storage ring. The source combines accelerator and laser technology relevant for future seeded free electron lasers. It provides inherently synchronized femtosecond laser ‘pump’ and X-ray ‘probe’ pulses to enable time-resolved diffraction and absorption experiments. By using X-ray diffraction to probe laser-induced coherent optical phonons in bulk bismuth, we estimate an X-ray pulse duration of 140 ± 30 fs FWHM with timing drifts below 30 fs rms measured over 5 days. The excellent spatial and temporal stability of the source allows quantitative measurement of ultrafast lattice dynamics and associated phase transitions in real space with atomic resolution and instrumental time resolution of 85 fs rms. Studying semimetals such as bismuth, we have demonstrated (i) grazing incidence femtosecond X-ray diffraction on single crystals that allows us to more completely characterize the ultrafast structural dynamics of solids, and (ii) optical control of real space coherent atomic motion. Both methods will be used to study the dynamics of photo-induced phase transitions in strongly correlated systems such as manganites. The time resolution of such measurements could be improved by one order of magnitude at future XFEL facilities at much higher flux. Femtosecond linear and non-linear resonant X-ray scattering employing full polarization control both in the soft (0.3–3 keV) and hard (4–15 keV) X-ray regime will become feasible which allows direct measurement of orbital degrees of freedom. However, a laser and hard X-ray cross-correlation technique with sufficient temporal resolution and signal-to-noise ratio appropriate for single shot operation has yet to be realized. Again, laser seeding using a phase stabilized few-cycle (5–7 fs) laser may be a viable option to generate

FEMTO, a femtosecond (fs) X-ray source based on laser interaction with a relativistic electron beam, began operation in the fall of 2006. It is installed at the μXAS beamline of the Swiss Light Source (SLS) at the Paul Scherrer Institut, Villigen. “Laser slicing” of an electron beam has first been proposed and demonstrated at the ALS [1] and has recently been implemented at BESSY [2] to generate fs soft X-rays (1–2 keV) with variable polarization. FEMTO is the first undulator source providing tunable, fs hard X-rays in the range 4.5–12 keV for laser/X-ray pump-probe absorption and diffraction experiments.

The Swiss Light Source, located at the Paul Scherrer Institut, is a third-generation synchrotron light source characterized by its exceptional stability and continuous top-up mode of operation. With a storage ring energy of 2.4 GeV, it provides photon beams of high brightness for research in materials science, biology and chemistry.

Using femtosecond time-resolved x-ray diffraction we investigate the structural dynamics of the coherently excited A(1g) phonon mode in the Fe-pnictide parent compound BaFe2As2. The fluence dependent intensity oscillations of two specific Bragg reflections with distinctly different sensitivity to the pnictogen height in the compound allow us to quantify the coherent modifications of the Fe-As tetrahedra, indicating a transient increase of the Fe magnetic moments. By a comparison with time-resolved photoemission data, we derive the electron-phonon deformation potential for this particular mode. The value of Delta mu/Delta z = -(1.0-1.5)eV/angstrom is comparable with theoretical predictions and demonstrates the importance of this degree of freedom for the electron-phonon coupling in the Fe pnictides.

The Materials Science Beamline at the Swiss Light Source (SLS) has been designed to produce hard X-rays in the photon-energy range 5–40 keV, at an intermediate energy (2.4 GeV) synchrotron. To this end, it employs a novel “minigap wiggler”. Important issues in the design and realization of the beamline are the high heat load, robust system design, flexibility of operation and user-friendliness. A conventional collimating-mirror/sagittally focusing double-crystal monochromator/focusing mirror optics has been chosen with approximately 1:1 symmetry. Established component designs have been used wherever possible. Three serial end-stations are served with X-rays. Besides the minigap wiggler, other novel or unusual features are: continuous “top-up” injection in the SLS storage-ring, a rotating carbon “cup” filter in the beamline front-end, angles and bending radii of the optics mirrors which are adjusted at each change in photon-energy and special experimental-station equipment including high-speed one- and two-dimensional semiconductor detectors for powder and surface diffraction and a two-dimensional “Bragg magnifier” for tomography. In this work, a comparison is made between predicted and measured beamline properties, and Appendices with useful formulae and algorithms are provided.

Using femtosecond time-resolved x-ray diffraction, we directly monitor the coherent lattice dynamics through an ultrafast charge-density-wave-to-metal transition in the prototypical Peierls system K(0.3)MoO(3) over a wide range of relevant excitation fluences. While in the low fluence regime we directly follow the structural dynamics associated with the collective amplitude mode; for fluences above the melting threshold of the electronic density modulation we observe a transient recovery of the periodic lattice distortion. We can describe these structural dynamics as a motion along the coordinate of the Peierls distortion triggered by the prompt collapse of electronic order after photoexcitation. The results indicate that the dynamics of a structural symmetry-breaking transition are determined by a high-symmetry excited state potential energy surface distinct from that of the initial low-temperature state.

Magnetic shape memory Heusler alloys are multiferroics stabilized by the correlations between electronic, magnetic and structural order. To study these correlations we use time resolved x-ray diffraction and magneto-optical Kerr effect experiments to measure the laser induced dynamics in a Heusler alloy Ni$_2$MnGa film and reveal a set of timescales intrinsic to the system. We observe a coherent phonon which we identify as the amplitudon of the modulated structure and an ultrafast phase transition leading to a quenching of the incommensurate modulation within 300~fs with a recovery time of a few ps. The thermally driven martensitic transition to the high temperature cubic phase proceeds via nucleation within a few ps and domain growth limited by the speed of sound. The demagnetization time is 320~fs, which is comparable to the quenching of the structural modulation., 5 pages, 3 figures. Supplementary materials 5 pages, 5 figures

Ultrafast Manipulation Multiferroic materials commonly show both magnetism and ferroelectricity, such that the electric field can be used to manipulate the magnetic order, and vice versa. Kubacka et al. (p. 1333 , published online 6 March) used a strong terahertz electromagnetic pulse in resonance with an electromagnon—an excitation based on both electric and magnetic ordering—to control the spin dynamics of the multiferroic TbMnO 3 on a sub-picosecond time scale and induce the rotation of the spin-cycloid plane of the material.

Strongly correlated electron systems often exhibit very strong interactions between structural and electronic degrees of freedom that lead to complex and interesting phase diagrams1 2. For technological applications of these materials it is important to learn how to drive transitions from one phase to another. A key question here is the ultimate speed of such phase transitions and to understand how a phase transition evolves in the time domain3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13. Here we apply time resolved X ray diffraction to directly measure the changes in long range order during ultrafast melting of the charge and orbitally ordered phase in a perovskite manganite. We find that although the actual change in crystal symmetry associated with this transition occurs over different timescales characteristic of the many electronic and vibrational coordinates of the system the dynamics of the phase transformation can be well described using a single time dependent ‘order parameter’ that depends exclusively on the electronic excitation.

We use time-resolved hard X-ray diffraction to directly follow the dynamics of structural symmetry change during the ultrafast melting of a charge density wave. We observe a transient recovery of the periodic lattice distortion on a sub-picosecond timescale.

The insertion devices under construction for phase I of the Swiss Light Source (SLS) are described. Five undulators and one wiggler will be installed in four straight sections of the third generation 2.4 GeV SLS storage ring, under construction at the Paul Scherrer Institute. To provide undulator radiation in the energy range from 10 eV to 18 keV , both long period and short period, small gap undulators will be installed.

Two APPLE II type twin undulators are installed at BESSY II. They can either be operated in a chicane mode providing variable polarization at high switching rates or in a combined mode using a modulator for phase adaption. Studies on magnet block inhomogeneities have started to further improve the field quality and to reduce the effort on shimming.

At BESSY II the first quasi-periodic hybrid type undulator has been installed. The magnetic structure has been optimized for higher order suppression and simultaneously for high flux in the (shifted) 5th harmonic to provide an useful energy range between 20 and 500 eV . At smallest gap of 15 mm the device operates as a wiggler with a K-value of 16.

We describe the “Surface/Interface: Microscopy” beamline currently under construction at the Paul Scherrer Institut. This beamline will use a photoemission electron microscope to study the electronic and magnetic structure of materials. Its photon energy range will be 94–2000 eV. To allow time resolved measurements with millisecond resolution we use a new scheme allowing to switch the photon helicity optically without perturbing the electron orbit. Two identical elliptical insertion devices are placed behind each other in the same straight section. They can produce light with opposing helicities. These two sources are separated horizontally by introducing a small static parallel offset in the electron orbit. Switching between the two rays of opposite helicities is done mechanically at the horizontal focus behind the monochromator. The two sources are brought to overlap on the sample by slightly defocussing the refocussing mirror. A commercial microscope ( Δx ∼20 nm resolution) is adapted to the synchrotron by various upgrades. These include a software combining microscope and beamline control, a computer controlled mechanical alignment system, a separate sample preparation chamber, and sample cooling using liquid nitrogen. The beamline will be available for user operation in 2002.
