Zusammenfassung Dieser Aufsatz möchte die historische Entwicklung der Allgemeinen Terminologielehre rekonstruieren, die Eugen Wüster ab den 1920er Jahren bis zu seinem Tod 1977 kontinuierlich entwickelte. Der Titel einer seiner wichtigsten Aufsätze aus dem Jahr1974, „Die Allgemeine Terminologielehre –ein Grenzgebiet zwischen Sprachwissenschaft, Logik, Ontologie, Informatik und den Sachwissenschaften“, dient hier als thematisches Schema für unsere Analyse. Wüsters Werk umfasst mehr als 500Publikationen, darunter Monographien, Wörterbücher und Aufsätze in wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften und in Sammel- und Konferenzbänden, usw. Der vorliegende Aufsatz analysiert auch die Aus- bzw. Nachwirkung von Wüsters Werk auf die heutige Terminologiewissenschaft. The title of one of his most seminal articles from1974, “Die Allgemeine Terminologielehre –ein Grenzgebiet zwischen Sprachwissenschaft, Logik, Ontologie, Informatik und den Sachwissenschaften“ [The General Theory of Terminology –An interdisciplinary field between linguistics, logic, ontology, informatics, and the sciences] is taken in our analysis as the thematic blueprint. Wüster’s œvre includes more than 500publications, including monographs, dictionaries, and articles in scholarly journals, conference proceedings, etc. This article also analyses the impact of Wüster’s œvre in contemporary terminology studies. The theme of IEEE ICCI*CC'16 on Cognitive Informatics (CI) and Cognitive Computing (CC) was on cognitive computers, big data cognition, and machine learning. CI and CC are a contemporary field not only for basic studies on the brain, computational intelligence theories, and denotational mathematics, but also for engineering applications in cognitive systems towards deep learning, deep thinking, and deep reasoning. This paper reports a set of position statements presented in the plenary panel (Part I) in IEEE ICCI*CC'16 at Stanford University. The summary is contributed by invited panelists who are part of the world's renowned scholars in the transdisciplinary field of CI and CC.

In diesem Aufsatz wird der Entwicklungsstand der Terminologiewissenschaft auf 3 Ebenen analysiert: (1) in Bezug auf die Forschungsfragen, die in Forschungsprojekten, universitaren Qualifizierungsarbeiten und anderen Forschungskontexten gestellt und auf der Basis empirischer Analysen beantwortet werden, darauf aufbauend (2) in Bezug auf die Methoden, die dabei verwendet werden, die Theorien, die solchen Arbeiten zugrunde gelegt werden, und die Paradigmen, in denen sich die Theorien und Methoden verorten lassen, sowie (3) in Bezug auf die daruber liegende Ebene der Terminologiewissenschaft als Disziplin. Auf allen 3 Ebenen lasst sich feststellen, dass der interdisziplinare und multiperspektivische Charakter der Terminologiewissenschaft in den letzten Jahrzehnten zugenommen hat und sich weiter verstarkt.

The European Digital Single Market, one of the main goals of Europe 2020, is still fragmented due to language barriers. Language technologies (LT), like Machine Translation (MT) solutions, are key elements for solving this fragmentation. Nevertheless, it is necessary to compile, benchmark the quality and facilitate the access to Language Resources to build successful MT solutions. With these aims, the LT_Observatory project has been developed (2014–2016). The project was funded by the European Commission through the H2020 programme. This article describes the main outputs: An on-line catalogue of language resources in existing pools and other national resources based on pre-identified user needs. Methodologies for improving the quality and usability of language resources. National and regional language strategies, policies and funding sources to support language technologies. An EcoGuide that aims to adapt the findings of the LT_Observatory project for various stakeholder groups providing practical information for operational usability of LRs and tools for MT application, funding opportunities, and recommendations geared at European, national and regional policy and decision makers.

Cognitive Informatics (CI) is a discipline spanning across computer science, information science, cognitive science, brain science, intelligence science, knowledge science, and cognitive linguistics. CI aims to investigate the internal information processing mechanisms and processes of the brain, the underlying abstract intelligence theories and denotational mathematics, and their engineering applications in cognitive computing and computational intelligence. This paper reports a set of nine position statements presented in the plenary panel of IEEE ICCI*CC’12 on eBrain and Cognitive Computers contributed from invited panelists who are part of the world’s renowned researchers and scholars in the field of cognitive informatics and cognitive computing.

The article focuses on the contribution of Austrian philosophy in the 19th century and the early 20th century to the development of the theory of terminology. Between 1860 and 1910, F. Brentano and his disciples A. Marty, A. Meinong, developed a multi-disciplinary philosophy (between psychology, linguistics, ontology, and epistemology) that started from Aristotle’s categories and resulted in a variety of theories and orientations that are today considered as crucial pre-requisites to ontology engineering, computational philosophy of science, and terminology studies. Husserl’s phenomenology and theory of meaning and Carnap’s constitutional ontology theory are also discussed in this re-construction of the development of the epistemological foundations of the theory of terminology as Eugen Wuster developed between the early 1920s and 1976.

Collaborative research, preservation of data, common access to information and recently an increasingly growing amount of data have been an issue in disciplines in which the studied material is located in many places. This is especially the case in the humanities. Digital libraries are a step towards turning hard copies into digitally available material. The need to manage, share, and preserve this information gave birth to a new term, the Digital Humanities. In this paper we present the current state, goals and future outlook of the European Digital Humanities initiative.

We investigate the extension of classification schemes in the Humanities into semantic data repositories, the benefits of which could be the automation of so far manually conducted processes, such as detecting motifs in folktale texts. In parallel, we propose linguistic analysis of the textual labels used in these repositories. The resulting resource, which we propose to publish in the Linked Open Data (LOD) framework, will explicitly interlink domain knowledge and linguistically enriched language data, which can be used for knowledge-driven content analysis of literary works.

Differing theoretical and methodological views and working-group needs have spawned a wide diversity in the content, layout and internal structure of terminological entries in database environments, which in turn complicates standardization and data interchange. Major criticisms lodged against the data element list provided in ISO 6156 (MATER) prompted the authors to conduct an empirical examination of over thirty existing databases to ascertain which data elements are truly used in practice (as opposed to those which are espoused or rejected in theory). Their results reveal that designation of data elements, like other terminological products, are subject to the vagaries of polysemy and synonymy. They conclude that, given the widespread differences in approach evidenced in existing databases, the most practical approach to data element concerns during interchange is to compile an open-ended dictionary of common data element types for use as a mapping device during the data preparation stage.

This document proposes an overview of the current scene towards an Interoperability Framework and acts as a reference point for the current standards that the community fosters and encourages to adopt/improve. This initiative is in close synchronization with other relevant initiatives such as CLARIN, ELRA, ISO and TEI and META-Share. The document builds on the CLARIN Standardisation Action Plan and adapts and extends it to the needs of the broader LT Community, beyond the SSH research areas including the industry. The main goal of this document is to give a practical orientation for various LT players, both commercial and academic; the main message being that a harmonized domain of language resources and technology can be achieved stepwise, but that an effort to adopt standards is necessary to overcome fragmentation. NB: This is to be intended by no means as a static, closed document, rather a dynamic one which needs to be constantly/periodically revised and updated by the community itself.

We present in this demonstration paper the actual text technology infrastructure we have been establishing for annotating with linguistic and domain-specific information - the personalized death - a corpus of baroque texts (in German) belonging to the genre "Danse Macabre". While the developed and assembled tools are already covering the automatic treatment of various lexical aspects of such texts, and are also supporting the manual annotation of the corpus with concepts related to the personalized death, we are currently extending our work with the integration of methods and tools for automating the annotation procedure. The goal of our project is to offer the philologist, historian or the interested public an improved access to this kind of corpora, allowing for example for topic based queries and navigation.

Dieses Kapitel gibt einen Uberblick uber Ziele, Methoden, und Anwendungskontexte des Terminologiemanagements. Eine Definition von „Terminologie“ leitet uber zu einem terminologischen Wissensmodell, mit dem die Dynamik und Komplexitat von begrifflichen Wissensstrukturen und entsprechenden lexikalischen Reprasentationsformen beschrieben werden kann. Ziel der terminologischen Wissensmodellierung ist die Erarbeitung von sprachlichen und begrifflichen Voraussetzungen fur prazise Fachkommunikation sowie fur die semantische Interoperabilitat im kunftigen „Semantic Web“.
