1. The Formulation of Scaling Expansion in an Euler-Poisson Dark-Fluid Model

Abstract

We present a dark fluid model described as a non-viscous, non-relativistic, rotating, and self-gravitating fluid. We assume that the system has spherical symmetry and that the matter can be described by the polytropic equation of state. The induced coupled nonlinear partial differential system of equations was solved using a self-similar time-dependent ansatz introduced by L. Sedov and G.I. Taylor. These kinds of solutions were successfully used to describe blast waves induced by an explosion following the Guderley–Landau–Stanyukovich problem. We show that the result of our quasi-analytic solutions are fully consistent with the Newtonian cosmological framework. We analyzed relevant quantities from the model, namely, the evolution of the Hubble parameter and the density parameter ratio, finding that our solutions can be applied to describe normal-to-dark energy on the cosmological scale.

Abstract

In this paper, a fluid model is presented which contains the general linear equation of state including the gravitation term. The obtained spherical symmetric Euler equation and the continuity equations were investigated with the Sedov-type time-dependent self-similar ansatz which is capable of describing physically relevant diffusive and disperse solutions. The result of the space and time-dependent fluid density and radial velocity fields are presented and analyzed. Additionally, the role of the initial velocity on the kinetic and total energy densities of the fluid is discussed. This leads to a model, which can be considered as a simple model for a dark-fluid.

Abstract

A typical proton CT (pCT) detector comprises a tracking system, used to measure the proton position before and after the imaged object, and an energy/range detector to measure the residual proton range after crossing the object. The Bergen pCT collaboration was established to design and build a prototype pCT scanner with a high granularity digital tracking calorimeter used as both tracking and energy/range detector. In this work the conceptual design and the layout of the mechanical and electronics implementation, along with Monte Carlo simulations of the new pCT system are reported. The digital tracking calorimeter is a multilayer structure with a lateral aperture of 27 cm × 16.6 cm, made of 41 detector/absorber sandwich layers (calorimeter), with aluminum (3.5 mm) used both as absorber and carrier, and two additional layers used as tracking system (rear trackers) positioned downstream of the imaged object; no tracking upstream the object is included. The rear tracker’s structure only differs from the calorimeter layers for the carrier made of ∼200 μm carbon fleece and carbon paper (carbon-epoxy sandwich), to minimize scattering. Each sensitive layer consists of 108 ALICE pixel detector (ALPIDE) chip sensors (developed for ALICE, CERN) bonded on a polyimide flex and subsequently bonded to a larger flexible printed circuit board. Beam tests tailored to the pCT operation have been performed using high-energetic (50–220 MeV/u) proton and ion beams at the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center (HIT) in Germany. These tests proved the ALPIDE response independent of occupancy and proportional to the particle energy deposition, making the distinction of different ion tracks possible. The read-out electronics is able to handle enough data to acquire a single 2D image in few seconds making the system fast enough to be used in a clinical environment. For the reconstructed images in the modeled Monte Carlo simulation, the water equivalent path length error is lower than 2 mm, and the relative stopping power accuracy is better than 0.4%. Thanks to its ability to detect different types of radiation and its specific design, the pCT scanner can be employed for additional online applications during the treatment, such as in-situ proton range verification.

4. Modification of Jet Structure in High-Multiplicity pp Collisions due to Multiple-Parton Interactions and Observing a Multiplicity-Independent Characteristic Jet Size

Abstract

We study the multiplicity dependence of jet structures in pp collisions using Monte Carlo event generators. We give predictions for multiplicity-differential jet structures and present evidence for a nontrivial jet shape dependence on charged hadron event multiplicity that can be used as a sensitive tool to experimentally differentiate between equally well-preforming simulation tunes. We also propose a way to validate the presence and extent of effects such as multiple-parton interactions (MPI) or color reconnection (CR), based on the detection of nontrivial jet shape modification in high-multiplicity events at high pT. Using multiplicity-dependent jet structure observables in various pT windows might also help understanding the interplay between jet particles and the underlying event (UE). We introduce a multiplicity-independent characteristic jet size measure and use a simplistic model to aid its physical interpretation.

5. Statistical Power Law due to Reservoir Fluctuations and the Universal Thermostat Independence Principle

Abstract

Certain fluctuations in particle number, \(n\), at fixed total energy, \(E\), lead exactly to a cut-power law distribution in the one-particle energy, \(\omega\), via the induced fluctuations in the phase-space volume ratio, \(\Omega_n(E-\omega)/\Omega_n(E)=(1-\omega/E)^n\). The only parameters are \(1/T=\langle \beta \rangle=\langle n \rangle/E\) and \(q=1-1/\langle n \rangle + \Delta n^2/\langle n \rangle^2\). For the binomial distribution of \(n\) one obtains \(q=1-1/k\), for the negative binomial \(q=1+1/(k+1)\). These results also represent an approximation for general particle number distributions in the reservoir up to second order in the canonical expansion \(\omega \ll E\). For general systems the average phase-space volume ratio \(\langle e^{S(E-\omega)}/e^{S(E)}\rangle\) to second order delivers \(q=1-1/C+\Delta \beta^2/\langle \beta \rangle^2\) with \(\beta=S^{\prime}(E)\) and \(C=dE/dT\) heat capacity. However, \(q \ne 1\) leads to non-additivity of the Boltzmann–Gibbs entropy, \(S\). We demonstrate that a deformed entropy, \(K(S)\), can be constructed and used for demanding additivity, i.e., \(q_K=1\). This requirement leads to a second order differential equation for \(K(S)\). Finally, the generalized \(q\)-entropy formula, \(K(S)=\sum p_i K(-\ln p_i)\), contains the Tsallis, Rényi and Boltzmann–Gibbs–Shannon expressions as particular cases. For diverging variance, \(\Delta\beta^2\) we obtain a novel entropy formula.

Abstract

The non-extensive statistical description of the identified final state particles measured in high energy collisions is well-known by its wide range of applicability. However, there are many open questions that need to be answered, including but not limited to, the question of the observed mass scaling of massive hadrons or the size and multiplicity dependence of the model parameters. This latter is especially relevant, since currently the amount of available experimental data with high multiplicity at small systems is very limited. This contribution has two main goals: On the one hand we provide a status report of the ongoing tuning of the soon-to-be-released HIJING++ Monte Carlo event generator. On the other hand, the role of multiplicity dependence of the parameters in the non-extensive hadronization model is investigated with HIJING++ calculations. We present cross-check comparisons of HIJING++ with existing experimental data to verify its validity in our range of interest as well as calculations at high-multiplicity regions where we have insufficient experimental data.

Abstract

Recent multi-channel astrophysics observations and the soon-to-be published new measured electromagnetic and gravitation data provide information on the inner structure of the compact stars. These macroscopic observations can significantly increase our knowledge on the neutron star enteriors, providing constraints on the microscopic physical properties. On the other hand, due to the masquarade problem, there are still uncertainties on the various nuclear-matter models and their parameters as well. Calculating the properties of the dense nuclear matter, effective field theories are the most widely-used tools. However, the values of the microscopical parameters need to be set consistently to the nuclear and astrophysical measurements. In this work, we investigate how uncertainties are induced by the variation of the microscopical parameters. We use a symmetric nuclear matter in an extended σ - ω model to see the influence of the nuclear matter parameters. We calculate the dense matter equation of state and give the mass-radius diagram for a simplistic neutron star model. We present that the Landau mass and compressibility modulus of the nuclear matter have definite linear relation to the maximum mass of a Schwarzschild neutron star.

Abstract

A study investigating a possible jet shape dependence on the charged event multiplicity was performed on collision samples generated by Monte–Carlo (MC) event generators Pythia and Hijing++. We calculated the integral jet shape and found a significant modification caused by multiple-parton interactions. By interchanging and enabling different model ingredients in the simulations and analyzing the results in several p T bins and event multiplicity classes, we found a characteristic jet size measure that was independent of the chosen tunes, settings, and jet reconstruction algorithms.

Abstract

We investigate how the non-extensive approach works in high-energy physics. Transverse momentum ( p T ) spectra of several hadrons are fitted by various non-extensive momentum distributions and by the Boltzmann−Gibbs statistics. It is shown that some non-extensive distributions can be transferred one into another. We find explicit hadron mass and center-of-mass energy scaling both in the temperature and in the non-extensive parameter, q, in proton−proton and heavy-ion collisions. We find that the temperature depends linearly, but the Tsallis q follows a logarithmic dependence on the collision energy in proton−proton collisions. In the nucleus−nucleus collisions, on the other hand, T and q correlate linearly, as was predicted in our previous work.

Abstract

We study the charged event multiplicity dependence of the jet structure in pp collisions. We present evidence for jet shape modification due to multi-parton interactions using PYTHIA and HIJING++ Monte Carlo (MC) event generators as an input to our analysis. We introduce a characteristic jet size measure which is independent of the choice of simulation parameters, parton distribution functions, jet reconstruction algorithms and even of the presence or absence of multi-parton interactions. We also investigate heavy-flavor jets and show the sensitivity of the multiplicity-differential jet structure to flavor-dependent fragmentation.

Abstract

A new form of fragmentation function is presented here, motivated by earlier non-extensive studies of jet fragmentation. We parametrized our Tsallis-like function on pion spectra and compared it to the most common fragmentation function parametrizations. It is shown that the new form is in agreement with earlier parametrizations, furthermore, its scale evolution overlaps better with the experimental data.

Abstract

HIJING++ (Heavy Ion Jet INteraction Generator) is the successor of the widely used original HIJING, developed almost three decades ago. While the old versions (1.x and 2.x) were written in FORTRAN, HIJING++ was completely rewritten in C++. During the development we keep in mind the requirements of the high-energy heavy-ion community: the new Monte Carlo software have a well designed modular framework, therefore any future modifications are much easier to implement. It contains all the physical models that were also present in it’s predecessor, but utilizing modern C++ features it also includes native thread based parallelism, an easy-to-use analysis interface and a modular plugin system, which makes room for possible future improvements. In this paper we summarize the results of our performance tests measured on 2 widely used architectures.

13. Systematic Analysis of the Non-Extensive Statistical Approach in High Energy Particle Collisions—Experiment vs. Theory †

Abstract

The analysis of high-energy particle collisions is an excellent testbed for the non-extensive statistical approach. In these reactions we are far from the thermodynamical limit. In small colliding systems, such as electron-positron or nuclear collisions, the number of particles is several orders of magnitude smaller than the Avogadro number; therefore, finite-size and fluctuation effects strongly influence the final-state one-particle energy distributions. Due to the simple characterization, the description of the identified hadron spectra with the Boltzmann–Gibbs thermodynamical approach is insufficient. These spectra can be described very well with Tsallis–Pareto distributions instead, derived from non-extensive thermodynamics. Using the q-entropy formula, we interpret the microscopic physics in terms of the Tsallis q and T parameters. In this paper we give a view on these parameters, analyzing identified hadron spectra from recent years in a wide center-of-mass energy range. We demonstrate that the fitted Tsallis-parameters show dependency on the center-of-mass energy and particle species (mass). Our findings are described well by a QCD (Quantum Chromodynamics) inspired parton evolution ansatz. Based on this comprehensive study, apart from the evolution, both mesonic and baryonic components found to be non-extensive ( q > 1 ), besides the mass ordered hierarchy observed in the parameter T. We also study and compare in details the theory-obtained parameters for the case of PYTHIA8 Monte Carlo Generator, perturbative QCD and quark coalescence models.

14. Cosmic Muon Detection for Geophysical Applications

Abstract

A portable cosmic muon detector has been developed for environmental, geophysical, or industrial applications. The device is a tracking detector based on the Close Cathode Chamber, an MWPC-like technology, allowing operation in natural underground caves or artificial tunnels, far from laboratory conditions. The compact, low power consumption system with sensitive surface of 0.1 m2 measures the angular distribution of cosmic muons with a resolution of 10 mrad, allowing for a detailed mapping of the rock thickness above the muon detector. Demonstration of applicability of the muon telescope (REGARD Muontomograph) for civil engineering and measurements in artificial underground tunnels or caverns are presented.

Abstract

Recent developments on a deep learning feed-forward network for estimating elliptic flow ($v_2$) coefficients in heavy-ion collisions have shown us the prediction power of this technique. The success of the model is mainly the estimation of $v_2$ from final state particle kinematic information and learning the centrality and the transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) dependence of $v_2$. The deep learning model is trained with Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV minimum bias events simulated with a multiphase transport model (AMPT). We extend this work to estimate $v_2$ for light-flavor identified particles such as $\pi^{\pm}$, $\rm K^{\pm}$, and $\rm p+\bar{p}$ in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. The number of constituent quark (NCQ) scaling is also shown. The evolution of $p_{\rm T}$-crossing point of $v_2(p_{\rm T})$, depicting a change in meson-baryon elliptic flow at intermediate-$p_{\rm T}$, is studied for various collision systems and energies. The model is further evaluated by training it for different $p_{\rm T}$ regions. 20. A hadronterápia ápolási vonatkozásai

Abstract

A hadronterápia egy innovatív terápiás kezelés a rák elleni küzdelemben. A hadronterápiában erősen kölcsönható részecskék, például protonok vagy ionok nyalábjait használják a rák kezelésére. Mivel a proton- vagy ionnyalábok nagyon pontosan fókuszálhatók, így kiválóan alkalmasak a mélyen fekvő vagy a kritikus szervek közelében elhelyezkedő daganatok kezelésére. Európában már számos központ kínál hadronterápiát, de Magyarországon jelenleg még nincs ilyen intézmény, annak ellenére, hogy itt is egyre több daganatot diagnosztizálnak. A magyar betegek hadronterápiás kezeléseket az Európai Unión belüli mobilitási szabályok vagy a magán-egészségbiztosítás alapján vehetnek igénybe. Jelen áttekintés célja, hogy bemutassa a hadronterápia jelenlegi helyzetét ápolási szempontból.

Abstract

The discovery and characterization of hot and dense QCD matter, known as Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), remains the most international collaborative effort and synergy between theorists and experimentalists in modern nuclear physics to date. The experimentalists around the world not only collect an unprecedented amount of data in heavy-ion collisions, at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in New York, USA, and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland but also analyze these data to unravel the mystery of this new phase of matter that filled a few microseconds old universe, just after the Big Bang. In the meantime, advancements in theoretical works and computing capability extend our wisdom about the hot-dense QCD matter and its dynamics through mathematical equations. The exchange of ideas between experimentalists and theoreticians is crucial for the progress of our knowledge. The motivation of this first conference named "HOT QCD Matter 2022" is to bring the community together to have a discourse on this topic. In this article, there are 36 sections discussing various topics in the field of relativistic heavy-ion collisions and related phenomena that cover a snapshot of the current experimental observations and theoretical progress. Abstract

The results of a Machine Learning-based method is presented here to investigate the scaling properties of the final state charged hadron and mean jet multiplicity distributions. Deep residual neural network architectures with different complexities are utilized to predict the final state multiplicity distribution from the parton-level final state, generated by the \textsc{Pythia} Monte Carlo event generator. Hadronization networks were trained by $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV events, while predictions have been made for various LHC energies from $\sqrt{s}=0.9$ TeV to 13 TeV. Abstract

The bioacoustic analyses of animal sounds result in an enormous amount of digitized acoustic data, and we need effective automatic processing to extract the information content of the recordings. Our research focuses on the song of Collared Flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis) and we are interested in the evolution of acoustic signals. During the last 20 years, we obtained hundreds of hours of recordings of bird songs collected in natural environment, and there is a permanent need for the automatic process of recordings. In this study, we chose an open-source, deep-learning image detection system to (1) find the species-specific songs of the Collared Flycatcher on the recordings and (2) to detect the small, discrete elements so-called syllables within the song. For these tasks, we first transformed the acoustic data into spectrogram images, then we trained two deep-learning models separately on our manually segmented database. The resulted models detect the songs with an intersection of union higher than 0.8 and the syllables higher than 0.7. This technique anticipates an order of magnitude less human effort in the acoustic processing than the manual method used before. Thanks to the new technique, we are able to address new biological questions that need large amount of acoustic data.

Abstract

This paper presents isolated photon-hadron correlations using pp and p-Pb data collected by the ALICE detector at the LHC. For photons with |η| < 0.67 and 12 < pT < 40 GeV/c, the associated yield of charged particles in the range |η| < 0.80 and 0.5 < pT < 10 GeV/c is presented. These momenta are much lower than previous measurements at the LHC. No significant difference between pp and p-Pb is observed, with PYTHIA 8.2 describing both data sets within uncertainties. This measurement constrains nuclear effects on the parton fragmentation in p-Pb collisions, and provides a benchmark for future studies of Pb-Pb collisions.

Abstract

The transverse momentum (pT) differential yields of (anti-)3He and (anti-)3H measured in p-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV with ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented. The ratios of the pTintegrated yields of (anti-)3He and (anti-)3H to the proton yields are reported, as well as the pT dependence of the coalescence parameters B3 for (anti-)3 He and (anti-)3H. For (anti-)3He, the results obtained in four classes of the mean charged-particle multiplicity density are also discussed. These results are compared to predictions from a canonical statistical hadronization model and coalescence approaches. An upper limit on the total yield of 4He is determined.

Abstract

The global polarization of the $\Lambda$ and $\overline\Lambda$ hyperons is measured for Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV recorded with the ALICE at the LHC. The results are reported differentially as a function of collision centrality and hyperon's transverse momentum ($p_{\rm{T}}$) for the range of centrality 5-50%, $0.5 < p_{\rm{T}}

Abstract

The production of the $$\Lambda $$Λ(1520) baryonic resonance has been measured at midrapidity in inelastic pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 7\ \hbox {TeV}$$s=7TeV and in p–Pb collisions at $$\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02\ \hbox {TeV}$$sNN=5.02TeV for non-single diffractive events and in multiplicity classes. The resonance is reconstructed through its hadronic decay channel $$\Lambda $$Λ(1520) $$\rightarrow \hbox {pK}^{-}$$→pK- and the charge conjugate with the ALICE detector. The integrated yields and mean transverse momenta are calculated from the measured transverse momentum distributions in pp and p–Pb collisions. The mean transverse momenta follow mass ordering as previously observed for other hyperons in the same collision systems. A Blast-Wave function constrained by other light hadrons ($$\pi $$π, K, $$\hbox {K}_{\mathrm{S}}^0$$KS0, p, $$\Lambda $$Λ) describes the shape of the $$\Lambda $$Λ(1520) transverse momentum distribution up to $$3.5\ \hbox {GeV}/c$$3.5GeV/c in p–Pb collisions. In the framework of this model, this observation suggests that the $$\Lambda $$Λ(1520) resonance participates in the same collective radial flow as other light hadrons. The ratio of the yield of $$\Lambda (1520)$$Λ(1520) to the yield of the ground state particle $$\Lambda $$Λ remains constant as a function of charged-particle multiplicity, suggesting that there is no net effect of the hadronic phase in p–Pb collisions on the $$\Lambda $$Λ(1520) yield.

Abstract

We investigated recent observation data of pulsar masses of PSR J0740$+$6620, PSR J0348$+$0432, and PSR J1614$-$2230 based on the extended $\sigma$-$\omega$ model. We assumed that these pulsars are maximal mass compact star, which suggest that the core approximation can be applied. Using the linear relations between the microscopic and macroscopic parameters of neutron stars suggested by this model, we estimated the values of the nucleon Landau mass and nuclear compressibility $m_{L} = 776.0^{+38.5}_{-84.9}$~MeV and $K=242.7^{+57.2 }_{-28.0}$, respectively., Comment: 10 pages and 2 figures

Abstract

The production cross section and the transverse momentum distribution of charged particles is measured in pp collisions at √s = 2.76 TeV, 5.02 TeV, 7 TeV and 13 TeV, as well as for Pb-Pb collision at √s_NN = 5.02 TeV and Xe-Xe at √s_NN = 5.44 TeV in ALICE at the LHC. The measurement is performed in the transverse momentum region of 0.15 results show a faster-than-linear increase with the center-of-mass energy and follow a similar trend with respect to previous measurements. The analysis of the p_T spectra in multiplicity intervals show a weak center-of-mass energy dependence when they are compared to their respective inelastic (INEL) pp measurement. The average multiplicity as a function of the collision energy shows a quadratic trend, and the comparison with other ALICE multiplicity measurements exhibits a remarkable agreement, within uncertainties.The transverse momentum spectra in pp collisions are compared to state-of-the-art MC simulations, EPOS LHC and PYTHIA 8 event generators; none of them is able to reproduce the distributions over the full p_T range. The differential cross section in pp collisions is an essential observable for the study of the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The absence of a medium formation in pp collisions serves as an essential baseline for studies of particle production and suppression due to parton energy-loss in the QGP. Since pp collisions at √s = 5.44 TeV were not measured by ALICE, the pp reference at this energy was constructed by using a power law interpolation between the s = 5.02 TeV and 7 TeV data. The pp results are compared to the particle production in Pb-Pb collisions at √s_NN = 5.02 TeV and Xe-Xe collisions at √s_NN = 5.44 TeV. The nuclear modification factor R_AA for Pb-Pb and Xe-Xe collisions was calculated and a strong suppression of high-p_T particles is observed in central collisions. The R AA in different systems allows for a differential study of the parton energy loss in the QGP. The comparison of the R AA in multiplicity intervals between the two systems provide insights into the path length dependence of a parton that propagates in the medium.

Abstract

Predictions for cold nuclear matter effects on charged hadrons, identified light hadrons, quarkonium and heavy flavor hadrons, Drell–Yan dileptons, jets, photons, gauge bosons and top quark pairs produced in p +Pb collisions at sNN=8.16 TeV are compiled and, where possible, compared to each other. Predictions of the normalized ratios of p +Pb to p+p cross sections are also presented for most of the observables, providing new insights into the expected role of cold nuclear matter effects. In particular, the role of nuclear parton distribution functions on particle production can now be probed over a wider range of phase space than ever before.

Abstract

First calculated results with the new HIJING++ are presented for identified hadron production in high-energy heavy ion collisions. The recently developed HIJING++ version is based on the latest version of PYTHIA8 and contains all the nuclear effects has been included in the HIJING2.552, which will be improved by a new version of the shadowing parametrization and jet quenching module. Here, we summarize the major changes of the new program code beside the comparison between experimental data for some specific high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Abstract

The correlations of identical charged kaons were measured in p-Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The femtoscopic invariant radii and correlation strengths were extracted from one-dimensional kaon correlation functions and were compared with those obtained in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at √s=7 TeV and √sNN=2.76 TeV, respectively. The presented results also complement the identical-pion femtoscopic data published by the ALICE collaboration. The extracted radii increase with increasing charged-particle multiplicity and decrease with increasing pair transverse momentum. At comparable multiplicities, the radii measured in p-Pb collisions are found to be close to those observed in pp collisions. The obtained femtoscopic parameters are reproduced by the EPOS 3 hadronic interaction model and disfavor models with large initial size or strong collective expansion at low multiplicities.

Abstract

The non-extensive statistical description of the identified final state particles measured in high energy collisions is well-known by its wide range of applicability. However, there are many open questions that need to be answered, including but not limited to, the question of the observed mass scaling of massive hadrons or the size and multiplicity dependence of the model parameters. This latter is especially relevant, since currently the amount of available experimental data with high multiplicity at small systems is very limited. This contribution has two main goals: On the one hand we provide a status report of the ongoing tuning of the soon-to-be-released HIJING++ Monte Carlo event generator. On the other hand, the role of multiplicity dependence of the parameters in the non-extensive hadronization model is investigated with HIJING++ calculations. We present cross-check comparisons of HIJING++ with existing experimental data to verify its validity in our range of interest as well as calculations at high-multiplicity regions where we have insufficient experimental data., Comment: This paper is based on the talk at the 18th Zim\'anyi School, Budapest, Hungary, 3-7 December 2018

Abstract

First results on K/π , p/π and K/p fluctuations are obtained with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC as a function of centrality in Pb--Pb collisions at √sNN=2.76 TeV . The observable νdyn , which is defined in terms of the moments of particle multiplicity distributions, is used to quantify the magnitude of dynamical fluctuations of relative particle yields and also provides insight into the correlation between particle pairs. This study is based on a novel experimental technique, called the Identity Method, which allows one to measure the moments of multiplicity distributions in case of incomplete particle identification. The results for p/π show a change of sign in νdyn from positive to negative towards more peripheral collisions. For central collisions, the results follow the smooth trend of the data at lower energies and νdyn exhibits a change in sign for p/π and K/p.

Abstract

We report on the first femtoscopic measurement of baryon pairs, such as p-p, p-Λ, and Λ-Λ, measured by ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in proton-proton collisions at s=7TeV. This study demonstrates the feasibility of such measurements in pp collisions at ultrarelativistic energies. The femtoscopy method is employed to constrain the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions, which are still rather poorly understood. A new method to evaluate the influence of residual correlations induced by the decays of resonances and experimental impurities is hereby presented. The p-p, p-Λ, and Λ-Λ correlation functions were fitted simultaneously with the help of a new tool developed specifically for the femtoscopy analysis in small colliding systems: Correlation Analysis Tool using the Schrodinger equation (CATS). Within the assumption that in pp collisions the three particle pairs originate from a common source, its radius is found to be equal to r0=1.125±0.018(stat)−0.035+0.058(syst) fm. The sensitivity of the measured p-Λ correlation is tested against different scattering parameters, which are defined by the interaction among the two particles, but the statistics is not sufficient yet to discriminate among different models. The measurement of the Λ-Λ correlation function constrains the phase space spanned by the effective range and scattering length of the strong interaction. Discrepancies between the measured scattering parameters and the resulting correlation functions at LHC and RHIC energies are discussed in the context of various models.

Abstract

The production yield of the Λ(1520) baryon resonance is measured at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The measurement is performed in the Λ(1520)→pK− (and charge conjugate) hadronic decay channel as a function of the transverse momentum (pT) and collision centrality. The ratio of the pT-integrated production of Λ(1520) baryons relative to Λ baryons in central collisions is suppressed by about a factor of 2 with respect to peripheral collisions. This is the first observation of the suppression of a baryonic resonance at the LHC and the first 3σ evidence of Λ(1520) suppression within a single collision system. The measured Λ(1520)/Λ ratio in central collisions is smaller than the value predicted by the statistical hadronization model calculations. The shape of the measured pT distribution and the centrality dependence of the suppression are reproduced by the EPOS3 Monte Carlo event generator. The measurement adds further support to the formation of a dense hadronic phase in the final stages of the evolution of the fireball created in heavy-ion collisions, lasting long enough to cause a significant reduction in the observable yield of short-lived resonances.

Abstract

Beyond 2025 we will enter the High-Luminosity era of the LHC, right after the upgrades of the third Long Shutdown of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The ongoing state-of-the-art experimental instrument upgrades require high-performance simulation support in the background, that is modern, robust, and comes with long term support. The original FORTRAN based HIJING (Heavy Ion Jet INteraction Generator) has been used intensively since almost three decades by the high energy physics and heavy-ion community. However, it is getting overly challenging to conform to these new requirements. Our novel Monte Carlo event generator, the HIJING++ is the successor of the old FORTRAN version containing all the physics that its predecessor have. Moreover, among others a flexible module handling layer and an analysis interface is also introduced. This latter supports the most popular event container formats such as simple ascii, ROOT and the HepMC format, together with RIVET support.
