We investigate theoretically the ultimate resolution that can be achieved with passive remote sensing in the microwave regime used e.g.~on board of satellites observing Earth, such as the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission. We give a fully quantum mechanical analysis of the problem, starting from thermal distributions of microscopic currents on the surface to be imaged that lead to a mixture of coherent states of the electromagnetic field which are then measured with an array of receivers. We derive the optimal detection modes and measurement schemes that allow one to saturate the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound for the chosen parameters that determine the distribution of the microscopic currents. For parameters comparable to those of SMOS, a quantum enhancement of the spatial resolution by more than a factor of 20 should be possible with a single measurement and a single detector, and a resolution down to the order of 1 meter and less than a 1/10 Kelvin for the theoretically possible maximum number of measurements.

Quantum coherence, an essential feature of quantum mechanics allowing quantum superposition of states, is a resource for quantum information processing. Coherence emerges in a fundamentally different way for nonidentical and identical particles. For the latter, a unique contribution exists linked to indistinguishability that cannot occur for nonidentical particles. Here, we experimentally demonstrate this additional contribution to quantum coherence with an optical setup, showing that its amount directly depends on the degree of indistinguishability, and exploiting it in a quantum phase discrimination protocol. Furthermore, the designed setup allows for simulating fermionic particles with photons, thus assessing the role of exchange statistics in coherence generation and utilization. Our experiment proves that independent indistinguishable particles can offer a controllable resource of coherence and entanglement for quantum-enhanced metrology.

In the long-standing quest to reconcile gravity with quantum mechanics, profound connections have been unveiled between concepts traditionally pertaining to quantum information theory, such as entanglement, and constitutive features of gravity, like holography. Developing and promoting these connections from the conceptual to the operational level unlocks access to a powerful set of tools, which can be pivotal towards the formulation of a consistent theory of quantum gravity. Here, we review recent progress on the role and applications of quantum informational methods, in particular tensor networks, for quantum gravity models. We focus on spin network states dual to finite regions of space, represented as entanglement graphs in the group field theory approach to quantum gravity, and illustrate how techniques from random tensor networks can be exploited to investigate their holographic properties. In particular, spin network states can be interpreted as maps from bulk to boundary, whose holographic behaviour increases with the inhomogeneity of their geometric data (up to becoming proper quantum channels). The entanglement entropy of boundary states, which are obtained by feeding such maps with suitable bulk states, is then proved to follow a bulk area law, with corrections due to the entanglement of the bulk state. We further review how exceeding a certain threshold of bulk entanglement leads to the emergence of a black hole-like region, revealing intriguing perspectives for quantum cosmology., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures

The quantum Fisher information matrix is a central object in multiparameter quantum estimation theory. It is usually challenging to obtain analytical expressions for it because most calculation methods rely on the diagonalization of the density matrix. In this paper, we derive general expressions for the quantum Fisher information matrix which bypass matrix diagonalization and do not require the expansion of operators on an orthonormal set of states. Additionally, we can tackle density matrices of arbitrary rank. The methods presented here simplify analytical calculations considerably when, for example, the density matrix is more naturally expressed in terms of non-orthogonal states, such as coherent states. Our derivation relies on two matrix inverses which, in principle, can be evaluated analytically even when the density matrix is not diagonalizable in closed form. We demonstrate the power of our approach by deriving novel results in the timely field of discrete quantum imaging: the estimation of positions and intensities of incoherent point sources. We find analytical expressions for the full estimation problem of two point sources with different intensities, and for specific examples with three point sources. Studies addressing the question "Can a learner complete the learning securely?" have recently been spurred from the standpoints of fundamental theory and potential applications. In the relevant context of this question, we present a classical-quantum hybrid sampling protocol and define a security condition that allows only legitimate learners to prepare a finite set of samples that guarantees the success of the learning; the security condition excludes intruders. We do this by combining our security concept with the bound of the so-called probably approximately correct (PAC) learning. We show that while the lower bound on the learning samples guarantees PAC learning, an upper bound can be derived to rule out adversarial learners. Such a secure learning condition is appealing, because it is defined only by the size of samples required for the successful learning and is independent of the algorithm employed. Notably, the security stems from the fundamental quantum no-broadcasting principle. No such condition can thus occur in any classical regime, where learning samples can be copied. Under the influence of external environments, quantum systems can undergo various different processes, including decoherence and equilibration. We observe that macroscopic objects are both objective and thermal, thus leading to the expectation that both objectivity and thermalisation can peacefully coexist on the quantum regime too. Crucially, however, objectivity relies on distributed classical information that could conflict with thermalisation. Here, we examine the overlap between thermal and objective states. We find that in general, one cannot exist when the other is present. However, there are certain regimes where thermality and objectivity are more likely to coexist: in the high temperature limit, at the non-degenerate low temperature limit, and when the environment is large. The conditional mutual information (CMI) $\mathcal{I}(A\! : \! C|B)$ quantifies the amount of correlations shared between $A$ and $C$ \emph{given} $B$. It therefore functions as a more general quantifier of bipartite correlations in multipartite scenarios, playing an important role in the theory of quantum Markov chains. In this paper we carry out a detailed study on the behavior of the CMI in non-equilibrium steady-states (NESS) of a quantum chain placed between two baths at different temperatures. These results are used to shed light on the mechanisms behind ballistic and diffusive transport regimes and how they affect correlations between different parts of a chain. We carry our study for the specific case of a 1D bosonic chain subject to local Lindblad dissipators at the boundaries. In addition, the chain is also subject to self-consistent reservoirs at each site, which are used to tune the transport between ballistic and diffusive. As a result, we find that the CMI is independent of the chain size $L$ in the ballistic regime, but decays algebraically with $L$ in the diffusive case. Finally, we also show how this scaling can be used to discuss the notion of local thermalization in non-equilibrium steady-states.

The theory of Quantum Darwinism aims to explain how our objective classical reality arises from the quantum world, by analysing the distribution of information about a quantum system that is accessible to multiple observers, who probe the system by intercepting fragments of its environment. Previous work showed that, when the number of environmental fragments grows, the quantum channels modelling the information flow from system to observers become arbitrarily close - in terms of diamond norm distance - to "measure-and-prepare" channels, ensuring objectivity of observables; the convergence is formalised by an upper bound on the diamond norm distance, which decreases with increasing number of fragments. Here, we derive tighter diamond norm bounds on the emergence of objectivity of observables for quantum systems of infinite dimension, providing an approach which can bridge between the finite- and the infinite-dimensional cases. Furthermore, we probe the tightness of our bounds by considering a specific model of a system-environment dynamics given by a pure loss channel. Finally, we generalise to infinite dimensions a result obtained by Brand\~{a}o et al. [Nat. Commun. 6, 7908 (2015)], which provides an operational characterisation of quantum discord in terms of one-sided redistribution of correlations to many parties. The quantum state exchange is a quantum communication task in which two users exchange their respective quantum information in the asymptotic setting. In this work, we consider a one-shot version of the quantum state exchange task, in which the users hold a single copy of the initial state, and they exchange their parts of the initial state by means of entanglement-assisted local operations and classical communication. We first derive lower bounds on the least amount of entanglement required for carrying out this task, and provide conditions on the initial state such that the protocol succeeds with zero entanglement cost. Based on these results, we reveal two counter-intuitive phenomena in this task, which make it different from a conventional SWAP operation. One tells how the users deal with their symmetric information in order to reduce the entanglement cost. The other shows that it is possible for the users to gain extra shared entanglement after this task., 7 pages, 3 figures

In spite of their outstanding experimental relevance, Gaussian operations in continuous-variable quantum systems are subjected to fundamental limitations, as it is known that general resources cannot be distilled within the Gaussian paradigm. We show that these limitations can be overcome by considering a collaborative setting where one party increases the amount of local resource with the aid of another party, whose operations are assumed to be Gaussian but are otherwise unrestricted; the two parties can only communicate classically. We show that in single-shot scenarios, unlike in the well-known case of entanglement theory, two-way classical communication does not lead to any improvement over one-way classical communication from the aiding party to the aided party. We then provide a concise general expression for the Gaussian resource of assistance, i.e., the maximum amount of resource that can be obtained when the aiding party holds a purification of the aided party's state, as measured by a general monotone. To demonstrate its usefulness, we apply our result to two important kinds of resources, squeezing and entanglement, and find some simple analytic solutions. In the case of entanglement theory, we are able to find general upper bounds on the regularized Gaussian entanglement of assistance, and to establish additivity for tensor powers of thermal states. This allows us to draw a quantitative and enlightening comparison with the performance of assisted entanglement distillation in the non-Gaussian setting. On the technical side, we develop some variational expressions to handle functions of symplectic eigenvalues that may be of independent interest. One of the central problems in the study of quantum resource theories is to provide a given resource with an operational meaning, characterizing physical tasks in which the resource can give an explicit advantage over all resourceless states. We show that this can always be accomplished for all convex resource theories. We establish in particular that any resource state enables an advantage in a channel discrimination task, allowing for a strictly greater success probability than any state without the given resource. Furthermore, we find that the generalized robustness measure serves as an exact quantifier for the maximal advantage enabled by the given resource state in a class of subchannel discrimination problems, providing a universal operational interpretation to this fundamental resource quantifier. We also consider a wider range of subchannel discrimination tasks and show that the generalized robustness still serves as the operational advantage quantifier for several well-known theories such as entanglement, coherence, and magic., 6+4 pages; added minor clarifications

Quantum coherence plays a fundamental and operational role in different areas of physics. A resource theory has been developed to characterize the coherence of distinguishable particles systems. Here we show that indistinguishability of identical particles is a source of coherence, even when they are independently prepared. In particular, under spatially local operations, states that are incoherent for distinguishable particles, can be coherent for indistinguishable particles under the same procedure. We present a phase discrimination protocol, in which we demonstrate the operational advantage of using two indistinguishable particles rather than distinguishable ones. We consider a quantum communication task between two users Alice and Bob, in which Alice and Bob exchange their respective quantum information by means of local operations and classical communication assisted by shared entanglement. Here, we assume that Alice and Bob may have quantum side information, not transferred, and classical communication is free. In this work, we derive general upper and lower bounds for the least amount of entanglement which is necessary to perfectly perform this task, called the state exchange with quantum side information. Moreover, we show that the optimal entanglement cost can be negative when Alice and Bob make use of their quantum side information. We finally provide conditions on the initial state for the state exchange with quantum side information which give the exact optimal entanglement cost., 9 pages, 2 figures

We compute analytically the maximal rates of distillation of quantum coherence under strictly incoherent operations (SIO) and physically incoherent operations (PIO), showing that they coincide for all states, and providing a complete description of the phenomenon of bound coherence. In particular, we establish a simple, analytically computable necessary and sufficient criterion for the asymptotic distillability under SIO and PIO. We use this result to show that almost every quantum state is undistillable --- only pure states as well as states whose density matrix contains a rank-one submatrix allow for coherence distillation under SIO or PIO, while every other quantum state exhibits bound coherence. This demonstrates fundamental operational limitations of SIO and PIO in the resource theory of quantum coherence. We show that the fidelity of distillation of a single bit of coherence under SIO can be efficiently computed as a semidefinite program, and investigate the generalization of this result to provide an understanding of asymptotically achievable distillation fidelity., Comment: 5+7 pages; accepted version

Activation of quantum capacity is a surprising phenomenon according to which the quantum capacity of a certain channel may increase by combining it with another channel with zero quantum capacity. Superactivation describes an even more particular occurrence, in which both channels have zero quantum capacity, but their composition has a nonvanishing one. We investigate these effects for all single-mode phase-insensitive Gaussian channels, which include thermal attenuators and amplifiers, assisted by a two-mode positive-partial-transpose channel. Our result shows that activation phenomena are special but not uncommon. We can reveal superactivation in a broad range of thermal attenuator channels, even when the transmissivity is quite low. This means that we can transmit quantum information reliably through very noisy Gaussian channels having zero quantum capacity. We further show that no superactivation is possible for entanglement-breaking Gaussian channels in physically relevant circumstances by proving the non-activation property of the coherent information of bosonic entanglement-breaking channels with finite input energy., 11 pages, 2 figures; minor changes, references are added

The existence of fundamentally identical particles represents a foundational distinction between classical and quantum mechanics. Due to their exchange symmetry, identical particles can appear to be entangled -- another uniquely quantum phenomenon with far-reaching practical implications. However, a long-standing debate has questioned whether identical particle entanglement is physical or merely a mathematical artefact. In this work, we provide such particle entanglement with a consistent theoretical description as a quantum resource in processes frequently encountered in optical and cold atomic systems. This leads to a plethora of applications of immediate practical impact. On one hand, we show that the metrological advantage for estimating phase shifts in systems of identical bosons amounts to a measure of their particle entanglement, with a clearcut operational meaning. On the other hand, we demonstrate in general terms that particle entanglement is the property resulting in directly usable mode entanglement when distributed to separated parties, with particle conservation laws in play. Application of our tools to an experimental implementation with Bose-Einstein condensates leads to the first quantitative estimation of identical particle entanglement. Further connections are revealed between particle entanglement and other resources such as optical nonclassicality and quantum coherence. Distribution of quantum correlations among remote users is a key procedure underlying many quantum information technologies. Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering, which is one kind of such correlations stronger than entanglement, has been identified as a resource for secure quantum networks. We show that this resource can be established between two and even more distant parties by transmission of a system being separable from all the parties. For the case with two parties, we design a protocol allowing to distribute one-way Gaussian steering between them via a separable carrier; the obtained steering can be used subsequently for one-sided device-independent (1sDI) quantum key distribution. Further, we extend the protocol to three parties, a scenario which exhibits richer steerability properties including one-to-multimode steering and collective steering, and which can be used for 1sDI quantum secret sharing. All the proposed steering distribution protocols can be implemented with squeezed states, beam splitters and displacements, and thus they can be readily realized experimentally. Our findings reveal that not only entanglement but even steering can be distributed via communication of a separable system. Viewed from a different perspective, the present protocols also demonstrate that one can switch multipartite states between different steerability classes by operations on parts of the states.

The reaction-coordinate mapping is a useful technique to study complex quantum dissipative dynamics into structured environments. In essence, it aims to mimic the original problem by means of an 'augmented system', which includes a suitably chosen collective environmental coordinate---the 'reaction coordinate'. This composite then couples to a simpler 'residual reservoir' with short-lived correlations. If, in addition, the residual coupling is weak, a simple quantum master equation can be rigorously applied to the augmented system, and the solution of the original problem just follows from tracing out the reaction coordinate. But, what if the residual dissipation is strong? Here we consider an exactly solvable model for heat transport---a two-node linear "quantum wire" connecting two baths at different temperatures. We allow for a structured spectral density at the interface with one of the reservoirs and perform the reaction-coordinate mapping, writing a perturbative master equation for the augmented system. We find that: (a) strikingly, the stationary state of the original problem can be reproduced accurately by a weak-coupling treatment even when the residual dissipation on the augmented system is very strong; (b) the agreement holds throughout the entire dynamics under large residual dissipation in the overdamped regime; (c) and that such master equation can grossly overestimate the stationary heat current across the wire, even when its non-equilibrium steady state is captured faithfully. Extendibility of bosonic Gaussian states is a key issue in continuous-variable quantum information. We show that a bosonic Gaussian state is $k$-extendible if and only if it has a Gaussian $k$-extension, and we derive a simple semidefinite program, whose size scales linearly with the number of local modes, to efficiently decide $k$-extendibility of any given bosonic Gaussian state. When the system to be extended comprises one mode only, we provide a closed-form solution. Implications of these results for the steerability of quantum states and for the extendibility of bosonic Gaussian channels are discussed. We then derive upper bounds on the distance of a $k$-extendible bosonic Gaussian state to the set of all separable states, in terms of trace norm and R\'enyi relative entropies. These bounds, which can be seen as "Gaussian de Finetti theorems," exhibit a universal scaling in the total number of modes, independently of the mean energy of the state. We study the process of assisted work distillation. This scenario arises when two parties share a bipartite quantum state $\rho_{AB}$ and their task is to locally distil the optimal amount of work when one party is restricted to thermal operations whereas the other can perform general quantum operations and they are allowed to communicate classically. We demonstrate that this question is intimately related to the distillation of classical/quantum correlations. In particular, we show that the advantage of one party performing global measurements over many copies of $\rho_{AB}$ is related to the non-additivity of the entanglement of formation. We investigate manipulations of pure quantum states under incoherent or strictly incoherent operations assisted by a coherence battery, that is, a storage device whose degree of coherence is allowed to fluctuate in the process. This leads to the derivation of fluctuation relations for quantum coherence, analogous to Jarzynski's and Crooks' relations for work in thermodynamics. Coherence is thus revealed as another instance of a physical resource, in addition to athermality and entanglement, for which a connection is established between the majorisation framework (regulating pure state transformations under suitable free operations) and the emergence of fluctuation theorems. The ability to distill quantum coherence is pivotal for optimizing the performance of quantum technologies; however, such a task cannot always be accomplished with certainty. Here we develop a general framework of probabilistic distillation of quantum coherence in a one-shot setting, establishing fundamental limitations for different classes of free operations. We first provide a geometric interpretation for the maximal success probability, showing that under maximally incoherent operations (MIO) and dephasing-covariant incoherent operations (DIO) the problem can be simplified into efficiently computable semidefinite programs. Exploiting these results, we find that DIO and its subset of strictly incoherent operations (SIO) have equal power in probabilistic distillation of coherence from pure input states, while MIO are strictly stronger. We then prove a fundamental no-go result: distilling coherence from any full-rank state is impossible even probabilistically. We further find that in some conditions the maximal success probability can vanish suddenly beyond a certain threshold in the distillation fidelity. Finally, we consider probabilistic coherence distillation assisted by a catalyst and demonstrate, with specific examples, its superiority to the unassisted and deterministic cases., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, comments are warmly welcome

The recent development of general quantum resource theories has given a sound basis for the quantification of useful quantum effects. Nevertheless, the evaluation of a resource measure can be highly non-trivial, involving an optimisation that is often intractable analytically or intensive numerically. In this paper, we describe a general framework that provides quantitative lower bounds to any resource quantifier that satisfies the essential property of monotonicity under the corresponding set of free operations. Our framework relies on projecting all quantum states onto a restricted subset using a fixed resource non-increasing operation. The resources of the resultant family can then be evaluated using a simplified optimisation, with the result providing lower bounds on the resource contents of any state. This approach also reduces the experimental overhead, requiring only the relevant statistics of the restricted family of states.
