A proposal for additional temporal compression and peak power enhancement of intense ( > T W / c m 2 ) femtosecond laser pulses using two thin plane-parallel plates is presented. The first ultrathin plate (order of mm) induces spectral broadening due to self-phase modulation, and the second ultrathin plate (order of micron) corrects the spectral phase. The elimination of the negative dispersive multilayer coating from the scheme offers an improved laser-induced damage threshold for the post-compression process.

With the advent of the Thin Film Compression, high energy single-cycled laser pulses have become an eminent path to the future of new high-field science. An existing CPA high power laser pulse such as a commercially available PW laser may be readily converted into a single-cycled laser pulse in the 10PW regime without losing much energy through the compression. We examine some of the scientific applications of this, such as laser ion accelerator called single-cycle laser acceleration (SCLA) and bow wake electron acceleration. Further, such a single-cycled laser pulse may be readily converted through relativistic compression into a single-cycled, X-ray laser pulse. We see that this is the quickest and very innovative way to ascend to the EW (exawatt) and zs (zeptosecond) science and technology. We suggest that such X-ray laser pulses have a broad and new horizon of applications. We have begun exploring the X-ray crystal (or nanostructured) wakefield accelerator and its broad and new applications into gamma rays. Here, we make a brief sketch of our survey of this vista of the new developments.

The peak power of present-day lasers is limited by the pulse energy that the diffraction gratings of an optical compressor can withstand. A promising method to overcome this limitation is reviewed: the pulse power is increased by shortening its duration rather than increasing the pulse energy, the pulse being shortened after passing a compressor (Compression after Compressor Approach (CafCA)). For this purpose, the pulse spectrum is broadened as a result of self-phase modulation, and the pulse is then compressed by dispersion mirrors. Application of this idea, known since the 1960s, to lasers whose power is over 1 TW has been restrained until recently by a number of physical problems. These problems and possible methods to solve them are discussed in detail. The experimental results obtained over the past few years demonstrate the efficiency of the technique (compression by a factor of 5) in the range up to 250 TW. CafCA features three undisputed merits: simplicity and low cost, negligible loss of pulse energy, and applicability to any high-power laser.

Extreme-light laser is a universal source providing a vast range of high energy radiations and particles along with the highest field, highest pressure, temperature and acceleration. It offers the possibility to shed light on some of the remaining unanswered questions in fundamental physics like the genesis of cosmic rays with energies in excess of 1020 eV or the loss of information in black-holes. Using wake-field acceleration some of these fundamental questions could be studied in the laboratory. In addition extreme-light makes possible the study of the structure of vacuum and particle production in "empty" space which is one of the field’s ultimate goal, reaching into the fundamental QED and possibly QCD regimes. Looking beyond today’s intensity horizon, we will introduce a new concept that could make possible the generation of attosecond-zeptosecond high energy coherent pulse, de facto in x-ray domain, opening at the Schwinger level, the zettawatt, and PeV regime; the next chapter of laser-matter interaction.

International audience; In order to implement radiotherapy based on a laser accelerator, it is necessary to precisely control the spatial distribution and energy spectrum of the proton beams to meet the requirements of the radiation dose distribution in the three-dimensional biological target. A compact laser plasma accelerator has been built at Peking University, which can reliably generate and transport MeV-energy protons with a specified energy onto the irradiation platform. In this paper, we discuss several technologies for the accurate control of a laser-accelerated proton beam with large divergence angle and broad energy spread, including the determination of the beam source position with micron accuracy, a tuning algorithm for the transport line which we refer to as “matching-image-point two-dimensional energy analysis” to realize accurate energy selection, and the control of beam distribution uniformity. In the prototype experiment with low energy protons and 0.5-Hz irradiation rate, a tailored energy deposition is demonstrated, which shows the potential feasibility of future irradiation based on laser-accelerated proton beams.

The pulse spectrum at the laser output was broadened due to self-phase modulation in fused silica and then the pulse was compressed by chirped mirrors. It was demonstrated that with an optimal choice of mirror dispersion a pulse with an energy of 17 J can be compressed from 70 to 14 fs. This compression after compressor approach has undoubted merits: simplicity, low cost, negligible pulse energy losses, and applicability to any high-power laser.

It has been proposed that laser-induced relativistic plasma mirror can accelerate if the plasma has a properly tailored density profile. Such accelerating plasma mirrors can serve as analog black holes to investigate Hawking evaporation and the associated information loss paradox. Here we reexamine the underlying dynamics of mirror motion in a graded-density plasma to provide an explicit trajectory as a function of the plasma density and its gradient. Specifically, a decreasing plasma density profile (down-ramp) along the direction of laser propagation would in general accelerate the mirror. In particular, a constant-plus-exponential density profile would generate the Davies-Fulling trajectory with a well-defined analog Hawking temperature, which is sensitive to the plasma density gradient but not to the density itself. We show that without invoking nano-fabricated thin-films, a much lower density gas target at, for example, $\sim 1\times 10^{17}{\rm cm}^{-3}$, would be able to induce an analog Hawking temperature, $k_{_B}T_{_H}\sim 6.6 \times 10^{-2}{\rm eV}$, in the far-infrared region. Following the completion of the installation and testing of the HPLS 2x10PW laser system at ELI-NP, prospective experiments related to spectral broadening in thin films for post-compression were performed at the HPLS 100TW output.

Sub-10 attosecond pulses (APs) with half-cycle electric fields provide exceptional options to detect and manipulate electrons in the atomic timescale. However, the availability of such pulses is still challenging. Here, we propose a method to generate isolated sub-10 attosecond half-cycle pulses based on a cascade process naturally happening in plasma. A backward AP is first generated by shooting a moderate overdense plasma with a one-cycle femtosecond pulse. After that, an electron sheet with the thickness of several nanometers is formed and accelerated forward by the electrostatic field. Then this electron sheet goes through unipolar perturbations driven by the tail of the first-stage AP instead of the initial laser pulse. As a result, a half-cycle sub-10 AP is cascadedly produced in the transmission direction. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations indicate that an isolated half-cycle pulse with the duration of 7.3 attoseconds can be generated from the cascaded scheme. Apart from a one-cycle driving pulse, such a scheme also can be realized with a commercial 100 TW 25 fs driving laser by shaping the pulse with a relativistic plasma lens in advance.

Nowadays the peak power of PW lasers is limited by the damage threshold of optical compressor diffraction gratings. A promising way to overcome the difficulty and increase peak power is to use an additional pulse shortening after optical compressor without significant energy loses. The discussed method is called CafCA - Compression after Compressor Approach. CafCA possesses three undisputed merits: simplicity and low cost, negligible pulse energy loss, and applicability to any high-power lasers without changing their optical schemes. The key idea of the approach is to broaden spectrum of powerful laser pulses exactly after grating compressor and correct spectral phase with help of reflected dispersion devices (chirped mirrors in particular). The idea has been known since the end of 1960s but its application to lasers with a peak power higher 1 TW has been restricted by a number of physical reasons. The reasons and ways of its overcoming are discussed in the paper. We analyze the recent experimental results that demonstrate the CafCA efficiency in the range up to 200 TW.

International audience; Recent developments in fiber lasers and nanomaterials have allowed the possibility of using laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) as the source of low-energy electron radiation for endoscopic and intraoperative brachytherapy, a technique in which sources of radiation for cancer treatment are brought directly to the affected tissues, avoiding collateral damage to intervening tissues. To this end, the electron dynamics of LWFA is examined in the high-density regime. In the near-critical density regime, electrons are accelerated by the ponderomotive force followed by an electron sheath formation, resulting in a flow of bulk electrons. These low-energy electrons penetrate tissue to depths typically less than 1 mm. First a typical resonant laser pulse is used, followed by lower-intensity, longer-pulse schemes, which are more amenable to a fiber-laser application.

International audience; Thin film compression to the single-cycle regime combined with relativistic compression offers a method to transform conventional ultrafast laser pulses into attosecond X-ray laser pulses. These attosecond X-ray laser pulses are required to drive wakefields in solid density materials which can provide acceleration gradients of up to TeV/cm. Here we demonstrate a nearly 99% energy efficient compression of a 6.63 mJ, 39 fs laser pulse with a Gaussian mode to 20 fs in a single stage. Further, it is shown that as a result of Kerr-lensing, the focal spot of the system is slightly shifted on-axis and can be recovered by translating the imaging system to the new focal plane. This implies that with the help of wave-front shaping optics the focusability of laser pulses compressed in this way can be partially preserved.

TeV center-of-mass energy electron-positron linear colliders comprising seamlessly staged capillary laser-plasma accelerators are presented. A moderate intensity laser pulse coupled with the single electromagnetic hybrid mode in a gas-filled capillary can generate plasma waves in the linear regime, where laser wakefields can accelerate equally focused electron and positron beams. In multiple stage capillary accelerators, a particle beam with respect to the laser wakefield can undergo consecutive acceleration up to TeV energies, associated with continuous transverse focusing in a beam size down to a nanometer level, being capable of a promising electron-positron linear collider with very high luminosities of the order of 10[Formula: see text] cm[Formula: see text]s[Formula: see text]. The transverse and longitudinal beam dynamics of beam particles in plasma wakefields with the effects of radiation reaction and multiple Coulomb scattering are investigated numerically to estimate the luminosities in beam-beam collisions with the effects of beamstrahlung radiation and bunch disruption.

We investigate the energy conversion efficiency from the laser to the accelerated ion beams in the interaction of different duration laser pulses with a simple plane foil, while the laser energy is kept constant. By employing multi-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we demonstrate that an intense few-cycle pulse is more beneficial for the energy transferring from the laser to the generated ions. Owing to the short acceleration time window of few-cycle pulses, the overwhelming majority of laser energy could be transferred to ions through a high-efficiency radiation pressure acceleration mechanism before the rupture of the target caused by transverse instabilities and finite spot effects. More importantly, it is found that a laser pulse with a too short duration also fails to reach the highest energy conversion efficiency for a given laser energy. The optimal pulse duration is related to laser energy and ion species. Our three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that the highest energy conversion efficiency is obtained with a laser pulse with a duration of two cycles, which, unlike a single-cycle pulse, is the optimal duration for the given laser energy (49 J). Furthermore, when the laser energy is reduced to 12 J, four-cycle becomes the optimal duration.

The implementation of the suggestion of thin film compression (TFC) allows the newest class of high power, ultrafast laser pulses (typically 20[Formula: see text]fs at near-infrared wavelengths) to be compressed to the limit of a single-cycle laser pulse (2[Formula: see text]fs). Its simplicity and high efficiency, as well as its accessibility to a single-cycle laser pulse, introduce a new regime of laser–plasma interaction that enhances laser acceleration. Single-cycle laser acceleration of ions is a far more efficient and coherent process than the known laser-ion acceleration mechanisms. The TFC-derived single-cycle optical pulse is capable of inducing a single-cycle X-ray laser pulse (with a far shorter pulse length and thus an extremely high intensity) through relativistic compression. The application of such an X-ray pulse leads to the novel regime of laser wakefield acceleration of electrons in the X-ray regime, yielding a prospect of “TeV on a chip.” This possibility of single-cycle X-ray pulses heralds zeptosecond and EW lasers (and zeptoscience). The additional invention of the coherent amplification network (CAN) fiber laser pushes the frontier of high repetition, high efficiency lasers, which are the hallmark of needed applications such as laser-driven LWFA colliders and other, societal applications. CAN addresses the crucial aspect of intense lasers that have traditionally lacked the above properties.

By extending the concept of thin film compression [Mourou et al., Eur. Phys. J. Spec. Top. 223(6), 1181 (2014)] to a thin plate, nonlinear post-compression from 24 fs to 13 fs of sub-petawatt laser pulses is demonstrated experimentally using a 1 mm-thick silica plate and chirped mirrors with a total anomalous dispersion of −50 fs2. The measurements were implemented with a specially designed dispersionless vacuum frequency-resolved optical gating, which is based on second harmonic generation of tested pulses in a 10 μm β-barium borate crystal glued on a 1 mm fused silica substrate. The used compression scheme is implemented in a geometry compatible with high power on-target experiment realization.

The post-compression of high-energy Petawatt (PW) scale laser pulses offers the promise of maximizing the peak intensity deliverable by a given laser system for the amplified energy produced within the pulses. One recent proposal made by Mourou et al. relied upon the flat-top property of modern high-energy laser systems to suggest a solution utilizing self-phase modulation within a thin plastic film material to generate the bandwidth necessary to recompress to a shorter pulse duration through compensation with negative dispersion mirrors. The so-called thin film compressor (TFC) promised to offer an efficient and affordable method to boost the peak pulse achievable with existing facilities. Recent measurements including experiments done at the CETAL PW laser based at the National Institute for Lasers, Plasma, and Radiation Physics (INFLPR) in Magurele, Romania demonstrate the feasibility of the TFC configuration on a small-scale and encourage continued pursuit at increasing laser levels. The applications of such high energy, ultrashort pulses are already being considered in regard to particle acceleration and X-ray generation.

Development of pulsed lasers for space-based science missions entail many additional challenges compared to terrestrial experiments. For systems requiring short pulses ≪1 ns with energies >100 mJ and fast repetition rates >10 kHz there are currently few if no laser architectures capable of operating with high electrical efficiency >20% and have good system stability. The emergence of a mulit-channel fiber-based Coherent-Amplifying-Network or CAN laser potentially enables such capability for space based missions. Here in this article we present an analysis of two such missions scaling up in pulse energy from ≈100 mJ for a supercontinuum LIDAR application utilising atmospheric filamentation to the higher energy demands needed for space debris remediation requiring ≈10 J pulses. This scalability of the CAN laser provides pathways for development of the core science and technology where many new novel space applications can be made possible.

Exceptionally high reaction gains of hydrogen protons measured with the boron isotope 11 are compared with other fusion reactions. This is leading to the conclusion that secondary avalanche reactions are happening and confirming the results of high-gain, neutron-free, clean, safe, low-cost, and long-term available energy. The essential basis is the unusual non-thermal block-ignition scheme with picosecond laser pulses of extremely high powers above the petawatt range.

We present here designs for a staged implementation of an orbiting debris remediation system comprised of a super-wide field-of-view telescope (EUSO) and a novel high efficiency fibre-based laser system (CAN). Initial proof of concept stages will operate from the International Space Station (ISS) where the EUSO telescope has been designed for operation as a detector of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Equipped with 2.5 m optics and a field of view of ±30°, the EUSO telescope can also be utilised for the detection of high velocity fragmentation debris in orbit near the ISS. Further tracking, characterisation and remediation are to be performed by a CAN laser system operating in tandem with the EUSO telescope. For full scale versions of both instruments, the range of the detection/removal operation can be as large as 100 km. Utilising a step-by-step approach of increasing scale we present an analysis of implementation of: 1) Proof of principle demonstration of the detection by a mini-EUSO and operation of 100-fibre CAN laser technology as an ISS based prototype, 2) Technical demonstrator of debris-removal that consists of the EUSO telescope for the detection and a 10,000 fibre CAN laser for tracking and impulse delivery for debris re-entry, and 3) A free-flyer mission dedicated to debris remediation in a polar orbit with the altitude near 800 km. The integration of the two novel technologies aboard the ISS amounts to a novel approach as an immediate response to the serious space debris problem with the existing platform of ISS.

The development of a fiber based laser architecture will enable novel applications in environments which have hitherto been impossible due to size, efficiency and power of traditional systems. Such a new architecture has been developed by the International Coherent Amplification Network (ICAN) project. Here we present an analysis of utilizing an ICAN laser for the purpose of tracking and de-orbiting hyper-velocity space debris. With an increasing number of new debris from collisions of active, derelict and new payloads in orbit, there is a growing danger of runaway debris impacts. Due to its compactness and efficiency, it is shown that space-based operation would be possible. For different design parameters such as fiber array size, it is shown that the kHz repetition rate and kW average power of ICAN would be sufficient to de-orbit small 1–10 cm debris within a single instance via laser ablation.

The question of whether Hawking evaporation violates unitarity, and therefore results in the loss of information, remains unresolved since Hawking's seminal discovery. So far the investigations remain mostly theoretical since it is almost impossible to settle this paradox through direct astrophysical black hole observations. Here we point out that relativistic plasma mirrors can be accelerated drastically and stopped abruptly by impinging ultra intense x-ray pulses on solid plasma targets with a density gradient. This is analogous to the late time evolution of black hole Hawking evaporation. A conception of such an experiment is proposed and a self-consistent set of physical parameters is presented. Critical issues such as black hole unitarity may be addressed through the measurement of the entanglement between the Hawking radiation and their partner modes., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Using of Thin Film Compressor for shortening of PW laser pulses was investigated in experiments. Cascade quadratic nonlinearity in a single KDP crystal can be applied for control temporal parameters of the laser pulses.

The work presented in this paper was performed at the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, on objects from their permanent collection: an ancient Egyptian bird mummy and three ancient Sumerian corroded copper-alloy objects. We used a portable, fiber-coupled terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopic imaging system, which allowed us to measure specimens in both transmission and reflection geometry, and present time- and frequency-based image modes. The results confirm earlier evidence that THz imaging can provide complementary information to that obtainable from X-ray computed tomography (XRCT) scans of mummies, giving better visualisation of low density regions. In addition, we demonstrated that THz imaging can distinguish mineralized layers in metal artifacts.

The interaction of a relativistic short laser pulse with thin foil is studied using 3D PIC simulations in the context of optimized high-energy proton generation for nuclear medicine and pharmacy. As an example, we analyze the Tc-99m yield from the Mo-100(p,2n)Tc-99m reaction with the International Coherent Amplification Network (ICAN) concept defined by a 10 J pulse energy and 10 kHz repetition rate. Based on 3D PIC simulation it has been demonstrated that normally incident 100 fs laser pulse with maximum intensity of 5 × 1021 W/cm2 is able to generate 1011 protons with energy upto 45 MeV from thin semi-transparent CH2 target. Such laser-produced proton beam after 6 hours bombardment of the thick metallic Mo-100 target gives around 300 Gbq activities of Tc-99m isotope. This gives reason to believe that laser technology for producing technetium is possible with ICAN concept to replace the traditional scheme through the fission of weapons-grade uranium.

A short review of the Russian mega-science project XCELS and scientific problems to be solved are presented. We discuss the origin of multi-beam design to attain the highest field magnitude at optimal focusing. Then, we formulate particular physical problems of fundamental interest that can be solved within this project.

We discuss radiation physics in fields approaching the Schwinger field. Among the leading effects in such strong fields are: (1) lepton production; (2) radiation effects from highly accelerated electrons; and (3) radiation back-reaction. Once applied to multi-TeV electrons, the intense electromagnetic fields could produce radiating muons.

A specially designed telescope with defocusing lens and off-axis parabolic mirror, which is working as a nonlinear element and producing self-phase modulation, was implemented for intense (3.1 TW/cm2) Fourier Transform Limit femtosecond laser pulses with Gaussian beam profiles. The pulse spectrum was broadened quasi- homogeneously over the beam cross-section due to the change in the lens thickness compensating for the reduction of the beam intensity from its center to periphery. In experimental demonstrations a set of chirped mirrors allowed for the spectral phase correction to a final pulse compression of 20 fs from 40 fs.

Over 30 associated laboratories across 13 countries are part of the international program known as IZEST (International center for Zetta-Exawatt Science and Technology), which has been initiated and coordinated by the Ecole Polytechique and the CEA. Together, this collaboration of laboratories are exploring new ways to push laser peak power and intensities beyond the present horizon with the aim to perform Laser-Based High Energy Physics.

The use of plasmas provides a way to overcome the damage threshold of classical solid-state based optical materials which is the main limitation encountered in producing extreme power laser pulses. In particular one can use plasmas to directly amplify ultra-short laser pulses to very high intensities. Multi-dimensional kinetic simulations and first proof-of-principle experiments show the feasibility of using plasma instabilities involving ion waves, such as stimulated Brillouin backscattering, in a controlled way to transfer energy from a long pump pulse to a short seed pulse and thereby increase the intensity of the latter. Plasma parametric amplification, and the use of plasma mirrors for focusing, is part of the newly developping domain of plasma optics, which eventually will pave the way to Exawatt lasers.

The transition from present high peak-power laser systems, encumbered by low efficiency and repetition rates, to systems of high average-power capable of real-world applications can be achieved by utilizing existing fiber based technology. A summary of the development of such a system by the ICAN consortium is provided here together with descriptions of exciting applications ranging from photon colliders to nuclear transmutation systems.

Thin-film compression (TFC) and the focusability of high-power laser pulses after self-phase modulation in thin films at transport intensities (∼1 TW/cm2) for petawatt laser systems is demonstrated. High-energy (∼296 mJ) laser pulses are compressed from ∼55 fs to ∼31 fs. Additionally, the focusability of high-power (∼45–55 TW) flat-top laser pulses after spectral broadening in thin films is found to be largely maintained, showing only modest decreases in the energy contained in the central part of the focal spot. In light of these findings, TFC offers a method for moving toward single-cycle pulse durations at significantly higher energies than those found at present, and if beam instabilities can be mitigated, maybe even higher intensities.

A comparative analysis is performed of the electron emission characteristics as the electrons move in laser fields with ultra-relativistic intensity and different configurations corresponding to a plane or tightly focused wave. For a plane travelling wave, analytical expressions are derived for the emission characteristics, and it is shown that the angular distribution of the radiation intensity changes qualitatively even when the wave intensity is much less than that in the case of the radiation-dominated regime. An important conclusion is drawn that the electrons in a travelling wave tend to synchronised motion under the radiation reaction force. The characteristic features of the motion of electrons are found in a converging dipole wave, associated with the curvature of the phase front and nonuniformity of the field distribution. The values of the maximum achievable longitudinal momenta of electrons accelerated to the centre, as well as their distribution function are determined. The existence of quasi-periodic trajectories near the focal region of the dipole wave is shown, and the characteristics of the emission of both accelerated and oscillating electrons are analysed.

Could massive arrays of thousands of fibre lasers be the driving force behind next-generation particle accelerators? The International Coherent Amplification Network project believes so and is currently performing a feasibility study.

We investigate X-ray laser pulse induced wakefield acceleration in a nanotube inside a solid material via 2D particle-in-cell simulations. Meanwhile, QED betatron radiation, improved emittance of the energitc electrons has been discussed.

Though wakefield acceleration in crystal channels has been previously proposed, x-ray wakefield acceleration has only recently become a realistic possibility since the invention of the single-cycled optical laser compression technique. We investigate the acceleration due to a wakefield induced by a coherent, ultrashort x-ray pulse guided by a nanoscale channel inside a solid material. By two-dimensional particle in- cell computer simulations, we show that an acceleration gradient of TeV/cm is attainable. This is about 3 orders of magnitude stronger than that of the conventional plasma-based wakefield accelerations, which implies the possibility of an extremely compact scheme to attain ultrahigh energies. In addition to particle acceleration, this scheme can also induce the emission of high energy photons at ~O(10-100) MeV. Our simulations confirm such high energy photon emissions, which is in contrast with that induced by the optical laser driven wakefield scheme. In addition to this, the significantly improved emittance of the energetic electrons has been discussed., 10 pp
