This study describes the prevalent sedimentological and geochemical patterns and investigates the environmental status of the bottom of Gialova lagoon, a highly vulnerable coastal site of the EU's Natura 2000 network. For this task, lithological, geochemical, and microfaunal analyses of sediment samples were combined with a high-resolution bathymetric survey. Potential pollution was determined using geochemical-based (EF, I-geo, and PLI) and faunal (Foram-AMBI) indices. We find that sedimentation is mainly controlled by the bottom morphology, hydrodynamic variations, and biogenic productivity of the lagoon. The application of the multivariate factor analysis technique revealed four dominant factors explaining the geochemical processes occurring in the lagoon. The first factor, namely "terrigenous aluminosilicates associated with Corg vs. autochthonous biogenic carbonates", discriminates the deposition of detrital sediments, related to the high adsorption of heavy metals—versus bioclastic sediments. The "sulfides" factor represents an anoxic phase of the lagoon floor, whereas the "Mn-oxyhydroxides" factor indicates increased manganese content with several compounded trace elements. The "phosphate" factor reveals multiple sources of phosphorus in the lagoon. The lagoon bottom shows negligible to minor contamination in heavy metals, except Mo and Pb, which induce moderate pollution levels. The analysis of the ASTC1 sediment core from the south Aegean Sea region offers critical insights into the complex interplay of geological and climatic factors over the Holocene period. The data reveals fluctuating climatic conditions during the last 8.7 ka as seen through the elemental concentrations obtained by XRF core scanning combined with a qualitative mineral analysis within a robust chronological framework. Short-term fluctuations in both Ti/Al and Zr/Si ratios suggest brief oscillations of increased aridity which partially coincide with the Holocene "Rapid Climate Change" events (RCCs). Among them, the most pronounced in our record are those centered between 8.5–8 ka, 3–2.5 ka (Greek Dark Ages), and 0.6–0.3 ka (Little Ice Age). The arid and humid events identified in the sediment record align with major archaeological periods in Greece, suggesting a potential influence of climatic conditions on the development and decline of civilizations in the region. Moreover, a general arid trend as of 6 ka toward the present was evidenced in our record and aligns with other high-resolution climatic data from the Northern Hemisphere, suggesting climatic teleconnections. Spectral analysis of the ASTC1 record reveals cyclical climate patterns with periodicities of approximately 2500, 1200, and 550 years, which coincide with the Bond and Hallstatt cycles. The phase relation of these cycles in our record, the Greenland ice record, and the North Atlantic Drift ice indices show that colder conditions in the higher latitudes are expressed as events of enhanced aridity in our record and generally in the lower latitudinal regions. High-resolution data for planktonic foraminifera and their groups of ecological interest, including Herbivores and Carnivores, combined with benthic foraminifera and a great variety of biogeochemical indices from the SE Aegean sediment core ST5, contribute to a detailed study concerning major and minor climatic episodes during Holocene. The ST5 sediment record, retrieved from the Tilos-Symi marine basin, evidences the impact of the nearby land, the local climate, and the Rhodes Gyre imprint on the eastern Mediterranean water circulation. Pronounced environmental changes are detected during a preconditioning period of ~400 years before the onset of sapropel S1 deposition and during the deposition phases S1a (10.0–8.4 ka BP) and S1b (8.0–6.1 ka BP). Major freshwater influx episodes (10.5 ka BP, 9.2–8.9 ka BP, 7.4 ka BP, 4.5–4.3 ka BP, and few additional during the Late-Holocene) are revealed, prominent oxygen deficiency time intervals (including a distinct brief anoxic period) as well as several drier, cooler and warmer climatic events. Herbivore planktonic foraminifera alternate their dominance with the Carnivores at the preconditioning period before the S1 onset and at the Late-Holocene (2.0–1.5 ka BP) when conditions of good seawater circulation, oxygenation, and productivity alternate with stratified low oxygenation waters and high freshwater influx from the land. The timing and causes for erosional events at the Kastrouli (Greece) archeological site – a Late Myceneaen with reuse in later periods – are presented. Two borehole sediment cores (max 6 m depth), collected from the footsteps of the settlement hill plain, were studied. Sedimentary analysis and luminescence dating techniques investigate and identify periods of soil aggradation in this record. Moreover, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating confirmed the concept of an ancient lake during Kastrouli settlement times. Macroscopic overview of the stratigraphic structure for each core, included lithological and textural evaluation of the core sediments, assessments of grain size, and determination of the geochemical and mineralogical composition of the sediments. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) techniques were applied for the mineralogical and geochemical analysis. OSL ages from seven sediment horizons spanned from the Ottoman period to archaic times. All lithological findings correlate with the results of the electrical tomography survey conducted in same area. Extrapolation of the Logarithmic fitting of the data back in time of prehistoric Late Mycenaean era of Kastrouli verifies a lake deeper than 10 m, with a considerable enhancement in soil aggradation of 1.2 cm/year. Attempts to dry out the area are evidenced by the hydraulic works found in two engineering sinkholes. Sedimentation changes had occurred in the local environment over the last 2500 years, and soil aggradation underwent significant fluctuations in the two studied cores. The Roman period (a wet period) and the Byzantine period experienced high aggradation rates. By contrast, soil aggradation rates in southern Phokis (Kastrouli region) have remained exceedingly low from the Ottoman era (circa 13th century) to the present.
