- Abstract
© 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, London.Coal burst is referred to as the violent failure of the overstressed coal, which has been recognised as one to the most critical dynamic failures in coal mines. This paper aims to examine the interaction between coal burst occurrence and the critical geological and mining contributing factors. Numerical modelling is utilised in this paper to quantify the influence of these impacting factors. The energy concept is emphasised in order to improve the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of coal burst. Only with enhanced understanding of the driving mechanisms, reliable coal burst risk assessment can be achieved.

Boren;DEMiR Export;et al;metso Expect results;Outotec;TMMOB Maden Muhendisleri Odasi, 23rd International Mining Congress and Exhibition of Turkey, IMCET 2013 -- 16 April 2013 through 19 April 2013 -- Antalya -- 105453, The stability of shallow tunnels and galleries is rather specific but an important area of interest in civil and mining engineering. In this study, failure modes occurring in circular tunnels excavated at shallow depths have been investigated. First, the concept of shallow tunnel was emphasized, and the factors that affect the stability of shallow underground openings were summarized. Then, the important failure modes observed in shallow tunnels were mentioned. Finally, in order to determine the failure geometries encountered in shallow tunnels, a series of parametric analyses were carried out by using a computer code that involved two-dimensional finite element stress analysis. In the analyses, the effects of various combinations of in-situ stresses on the stability of a shallow circular tunnel were investigated. Different depths were considered for the tunnel located in a rock mass where the principal in-situ stresses varied with depth. For this purpose, the effects of in-situ stresses on the geometry of the region, occurring around the opening and having failure potential, were examined. An index (i.e., IOZ: index of overstressed zone) was used for comparing the relative sizes of overstressed regions obtained from various cases.

- Abstract
40th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy -- 17 September 1999 through 20 September 1999 --, In this paper, the effect of anisotropic in situ stress field on the stability of underground openings is investigated. For this purpose, the potential for instability around a tunnel is studied by using elastic and elasto-plastic stress analyses. In the study, unequal principal components of the in situ stress field act in vertical, horizontal and longitudinal directions with respect to the tunnel. For various vertical in situ stress levels, the cases are compared when the longitudinal axis of the opening is oriented parallel or perpendicular to the larger of the horizontal in situ stress components. The analyses have shown that, in an anisotropic in situ stress field, the favorable orientation of an underground opening depends not only on the horizontal in situ stresses but also on the vertical in situ stress.

- Abstract
Objective: Knee Osteoarthritis (OA)'s prevalence increases during menopause. Aromatherapy massage with different oils is applied in the treatment of knee OA. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of aromatherapy massage with Bergamot essential oil (BEO) on pain, functionality, sleep quality and menopausal symptoms in menopausal women with knee OA., Materials and Methods: This study included 60 menopausal participants diagnosed with grade II-III OA. Participants were randomly divided into three groups: BEO (n=20), placebo (n=20) and control (n=20). The participants in the BEO group, received aromatherapy massage with BEO, in the placebo group aromatherapy massage with sweet almond oil was applied twice a week for 4 weeks. All participants underwent conventional physiotherapy. Visual Analog Scale was used to assess the severity of pain, Osteoarthritis Index to assess functionality, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index to assess sleep quality and Menopausal Symptoms Rating Scale to assess menopausal symptoms. All measurements were performed before and after the study., Results: The results of the study showed that all three groups were effective on pain, functionality, sleep quality and menopausal symptoms (p<0.001). The results of the study showed that, aromatherapy massage with BEO was found to be more effective on functionality (p<0.001), pain (p<0.001) and menopausal symptoms (somatic and psychological symptoms) (p<0.001) compared to the control and placebo groups. It was determined that aromatherapy massage with BEO did not create a significant difference between the sleep quality scale scores in the control group and the placebo group (p=0.454)., Conclusion: This study found that aromatherapy massage with BEO improved functionality, reduced pain and menopausal symptoms, and did not affect sleep quality. We consider that its application in addition to routine treatment may be useful to reduce symptoms., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest None., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Inc. - Abstract
Purpose: To investigate the fear of falling, physical activity, and functionality in patients with lymphedema in the lower extremities., Methods: Sixty-two patients who developed stage 2-3 lymphedema in the lower extremities due to primary or secondary causes (age: 56.03 ± 7.83 years) and 59 healthy controls (age: 54.61 ± 5.43 years) were included in the study. The sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of all individuals included in the study were recorded. In both groups, fear of falling was evaluated with the Tinetti Falls Efficacy Scale (TFES), lower extremity functionality with the Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS), and physical activity with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF)., Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the demographic characteristics of the groups (p > 0.05). The primary and secondary lymphedema groups had similar LEFS (p = 0.207, d = 0.16), IPAQ (p = 0.782, d = 0.04), and TFES (p = 0.318, d = 0.92) scores. However, the TFES score of the lymphedema group was significantly higher than that of the control group (p < 0.01, d = 0.52), while the LEFS (p < 0.01, d = 0.77) and IPAQ scores (p = 0.001, d = 0.30) were significantly higher in the latter. There was a negative correlation between LEFS and TFES (r = -0.714, p < 0.001) and between TFES and IPAQ (r = -0.492, p < 0.001). LEFS and IPAQ were positively correlated (r = 0.619, p < 0.001)., Conclusion: It was determined that individuals with lymphedema developed a fear of falling, and their functionality was negatively affected. This negative effect on functionality can be attributed to reduced physical activity and an increased fear of falling., (© 2023. - Abstract
Background/aim: Lumbar instability is an important condition that can be seen frequently in people with low back pain, affecting both the progression and the choice of appropriate exercise. The Lumbar Spine Instability Questionnaire (LSIQ) is a simple and low-cost tool for evaluating disturbed back stability in people with low back pain. The aim of this study is to develop the Turkish version of the LSIQ (LSIQ-T) and to evaluate its psychometric properties using the Rasch model., Materials and Methods: One hundred participants with chronic low back pain completed the LSIQ-T. The LSIQ-T was repeated for 30 participants after 1 week to establish its test-retest reliability. While internal and external construct validity were investigated using Rasch analysis and the Spearman correlation coefficient, respectively, reliability was evaluated in terms of internal consistency by Cronbach's alpha and the Person Separation Index (PSI)., Results: All items of the LSIQ-T were found to fit the Rasch model (chi-square: 34.07 (df = 15), p = 0.0033). The internal construct validity was good, the overall mean item fit residual was 0 (SD: 0.765), and the mean person fit residual was 0.322 (SD: 1.123). Internal consistency reliability was low with a PSI of 0.63 although Cronbach's alpha was acceptable (0.68). When the test-retest reliability was examined via differential item functioning (DIF) by time, none of the items showed DIF., Conclusion: The LSIQ-T is a valid unidimensional scale for the Turkish population. Although the LSIQ-T had low internal consistency, it demonstrated unidimensionality and is appropriate for use. Therefore, the LSIQ-T can be used in clinical practice and scientific research., Competing Interests: Conflicts of interest: The authors report that there is no conflict of interest with any financial organization regarding the material discussed in this manuscript., (© TÜBİTAK.)

- Abstract
Flumequine (Flu) is one of the fluoroquinolones most frequently applied for the treatment of broilers in The Netherlands. For the detection of residues of Flu in blood serum of broilers, a biosensor immunoassay (BIA) was developed which was fast (7.5 min per sample) and specific (no cross-reactivity with other (fluoro)quinolones). This inhibition assay was based on a rabbit polyclonal anti-Flu serum and a CM5 biosensor chip coated with Flu which could be detected in the range of 15-800 ng mL(-1). For the detection of Flu in muscle, an easy extraction procedure in buffer was selected and the measuring range was from 24 to 4000 ng g(-1). Average recoveries of 66 till 75% were found with muscle samples spiked at 0.5, 1 and 2 times the maximum residue limit (MRL in muscle = 400 ng g(-1)) and the decision limit (CCalpha) and the detection capability (CCbeta) were determined as 500 and 600 ng g(-1), respectively. Incurred muscle samples were analysed by the BIA and by LC-MS/MS and a good correlation was found (R2 = 0.998). Serum and muscle samples from with Flu treated broilers were analysed and the concentrations found in serum were always higher than those found in muscle (average serum/muscle ratio was 3.5) and this proved the applicability of the BIA in serum as predictor of the Flu concentration in muscle.

- Abstract
Fluoroquinolones (FQs) are synthetic antibiotics of broad-spectrum antibacterial activity widely used to treat infections in farmed fish, turkeys, pigs, calves and poultry. Monitoring these substances residues is therefore regulated by law. For the detection of FQs, we studied the feasibility of coupling the simultaneous screening of several FQs, using a dual surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor immunoassay (BIA), in parallel, with an analytical chemical methodology for their identification. Six FQs were simultaneously screened at or below their maximum residue level (MRL) in chicken muscle using a multi-FQ BIA for norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, difloxacin and sarafloxacin, and a specific BIA for flumequine. The two BIAs were serially coupled in a multi-channel SPR biosensor featuring a dual BIA in a competitive inhibition format. The samples non-compliant during the screening with the dual BIA were further concentrated and fractionated with gradient liquid chromatography (LC). The effluent was splitted toward two 96-well fraction collectors resulting in two identical 96-well plates. One was re-screened with the dual BIA to identify the immunoactive fractions and direct the identification efforts toward the relevant fractions in the second well-plate with high resolution LC-electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-TOFMS). The system not only allows the possibility to screen and identify known FQs, but also to discover unknown chemicals of similar structure which show activity in the dual BIA.
